Dear Member,As the 2016 Chamber year concludes at the end of this month, so does my two year term as your Chamber Board Chairperson. It’s been my honor and privilege to serve The Chamber in this lead-ership position, as well as work with the dedicated Chamber Directors and Staff.

I’m especially grateful to all of our members and their employees that have actively supported The Chamber by at-tending and/or sponsoring our events. You are the true heartbeat of the Chamber and the main reason it exists.

What I’ve learned and witnessed during the past 5 years on the Board, is that The Chamber is much more than just events! It’s also about networking, connecting and building relationships with other members and organizations.

Your Chamber is a resource in service to members in need of as-sistance to navigate through business challenges. It’s a dissem-inator of useful business and leadership information. It’s a voice of support for good legislation and best business practices. And ultimately, The Chamber has demonstrated again and again that improving the quality of life in our Communities is at the core of its efforts!

On behalf of The Chamber Board and Staff, we wish you the hap-piest of holiday seasons and hope that you can share the joy of the holidays with everyone you encounter. Best wishes for a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year!

Sincerely,

Don LietoDon Lieto, Chairperson

NEW MEMBERSWELCOME

Thriving Michigan is an effort to make the ideas that comprise conscious capitalism “business-as-usual” in Michigan. The Chamber is doing our part to share this concept with businesses in Monroe County.

Conscious Capitalism identifies the purpose that capitalism serves in society as advancing human thriving. Business is the single greatest organizer of human effort on the planet – by far. 21st century humans spend about ½ of our waking adult lives in our places of work. Conscious Capitalism asserts that businesses perform best when they focus on four mutually reinforcing disciplines:

1) Higher Purpose beyond Profit

2) Alignment Amongst Stakeholders

3) Conscious Cultures care for their employees like family, and send people home at the end of the day happy and fulfilled which multiplies the capacity of their teams.

4) Conscious Leadership ensures that the company will not stagnate.

The culture of our workplaces has a dramatic effect on the quality of our lives and our communities. Conscious Capitalism is a call for business to aim higher, to acknowledge the impact it has on the world and the people in it, and choose to be intentional about creating a “business-as-usual” we can be proud of.

Empirical research shows that companies who consciously implement these four pillars make more profit than their counterparts who focus soley on profit.
