Radio One continues to lend heavy support to Bamboo's Bamboogie, which it aired 17 times last week. The club hit. based on an old KC & The Sunshine Band success, thus continues to climb the overall airplay chart, inching up 26- 25, though it would fall well short of the Tbp 50 without Radio One's patronage. Meanwhile, Wildchild's Renegade Master, which was Radio One's top choice a fortnight ago with 29 plays, dips to number 10 on the station's playlist, with just 13 plays in the latest

Fabio & Grooverider have left London's Kiss FM for Radio One's weekly One In The The duo presented their first show last Friday and will replace the previous format that saw a rotation of guest DJs and MCs présent the Jungle show which is broadcast on Friday night from 2am to 4am. Fabio says he is extremely
national show. "It will be a pleasure working with Radio One," he says. "I grew up listening to the Top 10 on a Sunday and to be part of it is very exciting. It's a bigger bonus again working with my partner Grooverider. It is also another platform for drum & bass and another step forward for the genre." The leading drum & bass were lured to Radio One by ex-Kiss FM producer Wilber Wilberforce who produces One In The Jungle, "l'm ecstatic that l've been able to strengthen Radio One's dance output with the
change One In The Jungle's format to static ralher than rotating presenters will strengthen the show's impact, Wilberforce reckons. "It's approaching its third year and needed a fresh start and solid identity. No-one can question Fabio & Grooverider's authority on the scene and that ail forms of drum & bass will be covered," he says. Another ex-Kiss FM présenter, Cari Cox, will also be gaining a regular slol on Radio One via a once-a- month appearance on the Essential Mix show. Cox's mixes will be tied into the dates on a year-long Worldwide tour he is undertaking. "The dates have been planned in conjunction with us and Cari will be sending us a tape back each month as he proceeds," says a Radio One spokeswoman. The tour will start in South Africa on January 17 before taking off to such exotic locations as Croatia and Columbia.

React is celebrating seven yearsand12 volumes of its Reactivate compilation sériés with a spécial Reactivate Classics compilation. The last three compilations have ail reached me in the combined sales of over350,000. The albums have plotted the development of Europe's underground dance the days of rave and techno/trance Ihrough to the emergence of Nu-NRG and hard house. "When the sériés started I think Reactivate reflected European undergound dance music In a way that no one else was at the time or has since," says React's co-managing director James Horrocks. The LP culls tracks from past Reactivate compilations as well as new material. "We didn't want to duplicate tracks too much. Sa we've added things that have stood the test of time or mayhe fell between stools when we were putting the albums together," says Horrocks. Tracks included on the album include Hardfloor's 'Acperience', Second Phase's 'Mentasm', Quadrophenia's 'Quadrophenia' and GTO's 'Pure'. The album is mixed byTrevor Rockliffe and Daz Saund (pictured) and will be released on February 2.

Cream director Darren Hughes bas hailed the experiment - a risk at the time and part of the club's wider plan to put the focus back firmly on music - as a success. "Il's been a major success partly by plan and partly just by the way things have turned out," says Hughes, "I just wasn't prepared to stand by and let go down the road of DJs for DJs' sake, It's a

The club Is currently shut for its yearly rénovations id when it reopens on January 24 Paul Oakenfold wil move from playing in the Annex into the club's main room, the Courtyard. Hughes explains, "It gotto the point that the Annex was too small (or whal Paul was trying to do. Also the move to the Courtyard will allovv us to be more expérimental visually which is something both Paul and Cream are eager to do." The other key residents are Nick Warren, Paul Bleasdale and Les Ryder. Warren took over as residents from X-Press 2 who were residents in Cream's Front Room until May, Hughes says in retrospect X-Press 2's music may have been too expérimental for the club's Saturday night crowd but doesn't regreat the décision. Next year I really want to take the show on the road around the country with Westwood as weli. Sunday: Siept throughout the afternoon and then did my Sunday night residency at TREMDS in Amhurst Road. I play a mixture of everything. Monday: I recuperated from the weekend, unloaded my record boxes and did ail the things that I didn't get a chance to do over the weekend. Tuesday: I sorted records out. I get sent nearly everything but if I do buy stuff i go to BLACKER DREAD in Brixton or DUE- VENOOR in Clapham Junction. In the evenings when l'm not working I tend not to go out. I get on my m :1 and read the Jamaican website. It's really good for picking up pièces of gossip for the show about people like BDUNTY KILLER and BEENiE MAN."

The firsf airplay chart of 1998 is a rondown of the Top 501 tracks which have been mega on the alrwaves since we launched the Dance Airplay 40 last February, And it cornes as no surprise that ULTRA NATE's 'Free' bas emerged as the most airplay friendly tune of 1997, clocking up 2,488 spins since it entered at a modest 32 in May. The following week 'Free' became one of the highest climbers ever, jumping a massive 27 places before making itt0 number one three weeks later. Ail the monitored radio stations lent strong support to 'Free', and Choice Birmingham's head of music Neii Greenslade was a particular champion, saying, "The vocals are fantastic, it's .uplifting, it's happy, it's soulful." The nation agreed with him, and 'Free' has become 1 the Dance Airplay 40's most enduring i track, staying 29 weeks on the chart, it i was stiil there at the end of December and j looks likely to remain into the New Year... Mot far behind is DARIO G's 'Sunchyme', originally picked up by David Dunne, then head of music at Kiss 102 and 105 (as were). "We've experienced the biggest response we've had since 'Children' by Robert Miles," said Dunne back in July. "On the first day I played it, we had to play it another seven times to satisfy all the : listeners who called in about it." Part of the , track's success was undoubtedly down to the pioneering spirit of Dario himself, who tirelessly promoted 'Sunchyme' before iti|;| was signed by Eternal...The next two tracks reflect one of this year's music business tragédies - the untimely and violent death of NOTORIOUS B.I.G. The PUFF OADDY & FAiTH EVANS tribute T'II Be Missing You' enjoyed 26 weeks on the chart after entering in May, while Biggie's own 'Mo Money Mo Problems' went in the following month and is stiil there after 26 weeks. 'Hypnotize' is also further down the chart, at 40...0verall, the strongest thing to emerge from the Top 50 is ils heavy r&b bias - almost 75% of the entries. Micheile Campbell, head of radio promotions at Arista, puts this down to the éducation process which has gone on in radio regarding r&b and rap music. "Radio stations are realising that this is tfie Sound of the moment, it's what people are listening to, and it's reflected in the national Top 40," she says. Speed garage has a fairly respectable five entries, not bad for a genre which only broke this summer, and the rest of the chart is mainly composed of Eurodance anthems like 'Slay', 'Encore Une Fois' and 'Ecuador' by SASHI, GALA's 'Freed From Desire' and DJ QUICKSILVER's 'Bellissima',..The labels who have cause to congratulate themselves are WEA, with two entries apiece from SHOLA AMA and MARK MORRISON as well as another two by EN VOGUE on East West America and the aforementioned Dario 6 on Eternal. Multiply has also clocked up four entries, three by Sash! and one by TJR FEATURING XAVIER. Well done to all the airplay successes of 1997, and we're eagerly anticipating what will make the grade in '98.

Well done to Matt White and ■ everybody at MOTOWN/ ^ POLYDOR for securing the top slot of the year with ZHANE's 'Request Line1, This is no surprise if you remember the marathon stay the track had in our Top 10 earlier in the year but bearing in mind that the track was nowhere near as commercially successful as many of those that it's beaten, Il is an impressive feat. YVETTE MICHELLE's Tm Not Feeling You', in at number five, is another track whose eventual commercial chart placing gave no indication of its huge popularity in the clubs,..It's been the year of PUFF DADDY and, accordingly, BAD BOY ENTERTAINMENT has six releases In the Top 40, the highest two being NOTORIOUS B.I.G.'s posthumous 'Mo Money Mo Problems' and Puffy's own "Been Around The World/lt's AH About The Benjamins' (and that's leaving aside the numerous Puffy tie- ins with other artists and labels via guest appearances, production and remixes). It will - be inleresting to see how the Bad Boy phenomenon develops in the next 12 months. The Puffy backlash that we hear so much about seems to be mainly instigated by people who don't like him or commercial rap/ R&B to starl with, Tve yet to witness anyone storming off a dancefloor when a Bad Boy , track cornes on, quite the opposite in fact. Sure Puffy can't maintain the current level of hype forever but you can be sure he'll be around for a long time yet, and if that means more records as good as 'Hypnotize' or 'It's AH About The Benjamins' then I for one won't be complaining...On a UK tlp, the chart is a big disappointment with only two British records making it into our end-of-year Top 40. CONNER REEVES impressively snatches the number seven position while SOUL II SOUL sneak in at 36. Overall, you'd have to say the UK is still finding its feet in terms of modem r&b. We're getting good at copying the Americans but we still haven't got a sound of our own and until we do that we'H always be playing second fiddle. It's time to start taking some risks. However, overall it's been a good year and that's reflected in the chart, Thanks for ail your support and help in our first year with the Urban Chart and let's make 1998's even stronger.

GALfl's 'Freed From Desire' was far and away the most popular record in pop-orientated venues during the year. Debuting at number six on April 26, it spent a total of 22 weeks In the chart, seven of them in the Top 10, The Italian record had the edge over two by Germany's SASHI, who finished second with 'Ecuador' and third with 'Stay', these and Sashl's first single 'Encore Une Fois' (at number 10) i amassing far more points between them than the records of any other act... Another record which never got to number one but shov/ed great endurance was CHIMERA's NRGetic cover of the Maria McKee hit 'Show Me Heaven'. Debuting at number three on the first chart of the year, it charfed for 16 weeks, and took fourth place for the year - one notch ahead of MICHELLE GAYLE's 'Do You Know', which established a Pop Chart record by spending seven weeks at number one but did so during a lull at the beginning of the year, and thus amassed only enough points to finish in fifth place. Ifs one of five records in the Top 50 on 1st Avenue - two by Gayle, two by ETERNAL and one by LOUISE. 'Show Me Heaven' was one of only three records in the Top 10 of the chart that did not also make the Top 10 of the CIN sales chart, and by far the biggest- underachiever. The ones that missed out were AMEN UK's 'Passion', which peaked at 15, PiANOMAN's 'Party People (Live Your Life Be Free)' (number 43) and 'Show Me Heaven", which narrowly failed to make the Top 75. The Chimera failure illuslrated how successful NRGetic records can be in clubs while failing at retail. Further examples can be found in abundance in the Top 40, including SUZANN RYE's 'Because You Loved Me' and DEJA VU's 'Don't Speak', these quickfire covers of hits by Celine Dion and No Doubt ranking 13th and I4th (or the year but making no impression at ail in the shops.
