Middle school, high school and college teams will promote breast health education in the community as well as raise funds to further research. Event Host: North Hills Preparatory Ladies Volleyball Teams Opponent: Life Schools Red Oak Ladies Volleyball Teams Event Date: October 14, 2011 Event Time: 4:30 pm Location: Uplift Education’s North Hills Prep, 606 E. Royal Ln, Irving, TX 75039 Hannah Glick, senior and varsity team co-captain, initiated the project after participating in several national Dig Pink tournaments as a club volleyball player. She received full support from the North Hills Prep coaches, players, families, students, teachers and school administrators to bring the concept to the school. “My teammates and I love to compete, but I wanted us to do more this season by helping raise awareness, hope and funds in the fight against breast cancer,” said Glick. “I watched my aunt battle breast cancer a few years ago, and when she lost her battle, it broke my heart. I wanted to honor her memory and do something tangible for the millions who battle breast cancer.” While Dig Pink teams compete against each other on the court, they united in their shared goal to help raise funds to find a cure for breast cancer. Spectators are given the opportunity to become involved by making donations to the cause and by “pinking out” the events (i.e. wearing pink to show their support). Breast cancer patients and survivors will also be recognized during the event. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Side-Out Foundation. The Lady Panthers volleyball teams are coached by Annette Enright (varsity) and KraTaura Buckner (JV). Located in Irving, North Hills Prep is ranked the 10th best high school in the country by both Newsweek and The Washington Post, and one of the best International Baccalaureate schools in the country by US News and World Report. Uplift educates more than 5,700 students across its 20 schools in Dallas, Arlington and Irving. Uplift Education is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Its two oldest campuses, North Hills Preparatory and Peak Preparatory, are ranked the 10th and 11th best public high schools in America by the Washington Post. For more information, visit www.uplifteducation.org or www.facebook.com/uplifteducation. The Side-Out Foundation - The Side-Out Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was established in 2004 to unite volleyball players and coaches and to have them work toward the common goal of making a significant and identifiable difference in the lives of breast cancer patients and their families. The organization's goal is to advance clinical trials, increase compassionate support services and educate communities. Side-Out supports teams nationwide in their volleyball tournaments, clinics and other fundraising efforts. The foundation offers practical support for fundraising in addition to educational material for participants in order to help them become effective advocates for breast cancer. It contributes the funds to organizations that serve breast cancer patients, whether it is in the form of research, medical services or compassionate support. The term side-out refers to a situation in volleyball when one team wins a point while its opponent is serving, thereby regaining serve or control of play. It is hoped that Side-Out will do the same for breast cancer patients, providing them with the support, education and best available treatments to regain control of their lives.
