This month’s assignment is to read and discuss among yourselves Parish Priest: Father Michael McGivney and American Catholi- cism by Douglas Brinkley and Julie M. Fen- ster. At the beginning of this Fraternal Year when I ascended the Grand Knight’s throne so to speak, I was fortunate enough to re- ceive a copy of the book from Margie Cuff, who urged me to read it under the not too faulty theory that if you’re going to be a Grand Knight of Rosensteel, the least you can do is learn a little about who founded the Knights of Columbus. Naturally, I took the book with the best of intentions and placed it squarely on my nightstand where it sat gathering dust for months while I futilely tried to get through my growing pile of more secular printed material. But now, having finished reading it a few weeks ago, I can willingly give it a glowing review. Mr. Brinkley and Ms. Fenster very capably show the man himself, the reason why Father McGivney became a priest, the trials and tribulations he faced as a Catholic priest in late 1800’s New England and the reasons why he believed a religious order comprised of Catholic men was such a good idea. Not to mention the reason why Chris- topher Columbus was chosen as the Order’s namesake. While turning the pages, it slowly dawned on me that Father McGivney was the most ordinary of men in that the entity he created – in this case the Knights of Columbus – was well within the capabilities of many men. But what he had – or was blessed with, if you will – was an extraordinary will to help those less fortunate than himself (and not necessarily only those of the Catholic faith, as you’ll learn from reading) and an (Continued on page 2) CHAPLAIN’S CORNER Fr. José Cortes The Joy of Easter After the Sabbath, at the dawn of the first day of the week, three women came to the tomb of Jesus. They went to pay last respects to their beloved master. On their way, they were asking themselves: “Who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” They did not suspect at all that they were going to be the first witnesses of the greatest event in human history, the Resurrection of Christ. Jesus’ Resurrection is the central truth of our faith. It is the most extraordinary fact that ever happened. The Resurrection fills our hearts with joy and hope. Jesus is truly risen! He is alive! When we say this, we are not talking about a myth or a parable. He is really among us! However, how can we be certain of this? Where can we find the signs that authenti- cate that Christ is alive? We can find an answer to this question in the Gospel. Looking to what happened to Mary Magdalene, Mary, mother of James, and Salome, we can understand what allows us to be certain about the Resurrection. They went to the tomb to anoint a dead person. Their hope had finished with Jesus’ last breath on the cross. It was all over. Now the only thing that they had to do was to mourn the dead and keep his memory alive in their remembrance. They were completely surprised by the facts. When they arrived at the tomb, they found the stone rolled back and a mysterious young man. The stone had been moved and God had sent an angel to announce Jesus’ Resurrection to them. The angel was the witness, someone who already knew what happened, someone who already lived surrounded by the light of the Resurrection. The angel was someone who radiated a light that did not come from him. He had witnessed something greater than himself. In this angel, we can see the Church, all the witnesses through whom we have re- ceived the gift of faith. We can see in him all (Continued on page 2) K of C Father Daughter Dance!!
