Dear parishioners,

As summer ends, new life and new energy abounds. Fr. Joe Delka, Jeremy Castellano, and Ali Martinez have joined the Cathedral staff. Ali has taken on the task of editing this Newsletter along with Youth and Young Adult Ministry. Fr. Joe is not only the Parochial Vicar of the Cathedral but also the Director of Vocations for the Diocese. Jeremy has assumed the duties of Administrator for Liturgy and Music.

Administratively, this year the focus is the development of a Master Plan for the Cathedral building. The maintenance and long-range care of the Cathedral are part of the scope; we will also look into the use of the lower level to see if improvements can be made. We plan to look at the maintenance of the plaza and the possibility of parking. Projects for this year include moving forward with the video system. The system is for security, coordination between the organ and choir, and streaming to the internet. Scheduled for winter is the repair of the exterior of the Parish Office Building. In the fall, the gutters around the Good Samaritan House will be replaced.

Pastorally, I am looking to schedule a Bible Study. I am thinking of the Seven Signs in the Gospel of John as the basis for the discussion. Also, my hope is to have a Welcome Home series before Christmas.

After I was ordained, some of my aunts and uncles were insistent on using the title “Father” each time they called me by name. I don’t know if my mother’s siblings encouraged her to also use the title, but she once said to me, so I would know that I, as a priest, am human just like everyone else, “Mijo (Spanish for my son), I used to change your diapers.” I think she wanted me to know that it is not the office or title that makes a priest, but the humility of walking with those we pastor, of living the same human experience with them.

My heart aches with yours as we are now finding out the tragedy that some Bishops and priests are not the good people we thought they were. We are being made aware of a terrible evil that some have perpetrated. Though the abuse being revealed today so often took place many years ago, it is okay to mourn today because of it. It is okay that there aren’t enough words to make right the past wrongs. I think sometimes people are frustrated because they want to make right the injustice that took place. We priests are as frustrated as you are, but also understand that your hurt is different than ours and is valid. There is a hope that this bringing to light of the abuse is the start of a journey of healing.

Blessings,

Fr.

Bendiciones,

Padre Martín DíazPárroco

Ministry Updates - Actualizaciones de los Ministerios

Catholic Connection Youth Group

Summer is drawing to a close, and with that, Catholic Connection is ready to come back in full swing. Tom Nee and Ali Martinez, two of the new Notre Dame Echo Apprentices in the diocese, will be heading up the ministry and are eager to begin meeting with the incredible community that has been built over the past two years.

Over the summer, five of our teens participated in Notre Dame Vision, which is an opportunity from students all over the nation to join together for a week to grow as leaders in their Catholic faith. They participated in small groups with other young people who are pas-sionate for Christ, and we are excited to learn from their growth as they bring a new zeal to the ministry this year.

The kick-off night will be on Sunday, September 9th at 4:30pm. If your teen is interested in being a part of the ministry, please email Ali at [email protected] for more information.

Reflections on YAM

Being a “military-brat,” moving from coast to coast and everywhere in between was just a part of growing up. I’d begun to feel that friendships were always these very transient occurrences – either I would move away or they would – and therefore I often did not invest my whole self into them. I kept that outlook just up until moving to Salt Lake City last year when I got involved with Young Adult Ministries. My year with these incredibly faith-filled, joyful, and inspiring people has been nothing short of transformative, as I’ve created deeper bonds than I could have ever imagined. These bonds have been foundationally centered around Christ, which, unbeknownst to me, was an absolutely vital, but missing, piece in my faith journey. In growing in relationship with this community, I have also grown in relationship with Christ via His Mystical Body. In this past year, I have often reflected on the words of St. Teresa of Avila:

“Christ has no body on earth now but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours; yours are the eyes through which he looks with compassion on the world; yours are the feet with which he walks to do good; yours are the hands with which he blesses all the world.”

Young Adult Ministries has taught me the importance of community in truly living out the Catholic faith. It has taught me to always seek to know the other more. It has made me a better person. I am incredibly grateful to everyone that has built and supported Young Adult Ministries into what it is today, and I am excited for our future ahead together.

Goodbyes and Hellos

New Faces in the CathedralHello to everyone here at the Cathedral! My name is Fr. Joseph Delka (Fr. Joe), your new Parrochial Vicar. I’m looking forward to getting to know you. For now, here is a little bit about myself. I’m a Utah native and grew up in West Jordan. My parents and three younger siblings still live in the valley. I converted to Catholicism during my time at Utah State University where I studied biochemistry. Shortly after my Confirmation I began discerning a call to the priesthood after the Newman Center chaplain put the idea in my head. After finishing my degree, I went straight into seminary. I spent two years at Mt. Angel in Oregon and five years at the North American College in Rome. I was ordained just over three years ago. My first assignment was as the Parochial Vicar at St. Joseph in Ogden. Now I’m here with you! I’m also the new Vocation Director for the diocese and will be helping young men who are discerning a call to the priesthood. This is a new experience for me, but I’m excited to be here! Please pray for me and be assured of my prayers for you.

- Fr. Joe Delka, Parrochial Vicar

Hello to everyone! My name is Jeremy Castellano. I am the new Administrator of Liturgy & Music at the Cathedral. I prepare all the worship guides for services, schedule clergy, & liturgical minsters, & many misc. things, to sum it up, I make sure all liturgies run smoothly. In addition to my job, I am also blessed to be in our diocese’s diaconate program, and am assigned to the Cathedral for my practicum, before, God willing, I am ordained in January of 2020. As a diaconate candidate I will be serving at the altar and other liturgies such as baptisms, weddings, funerals, etc. I hope to contribute much more to the Cathedral through my ministry as a Deaconate Candidate and the Admin. of Liturgy & Music, which I see as a ministry, not just a job; something I believe any church job should be viewed as. I have completed our diocese’s Lay Ecclesial Minister program and was commissioned by Archbishop Wester in 2014. In December 2017, I completed my Master of Art in Pastoral Studies from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. I’ve spent the last 8 years working as a Pastoral Associate at St. Francis Xavier, then St. Joseph the Worker. Before that I spent 20 years as a news photographer for KTVX, then KSL. After 20 years in TV, I dreamed of a job where I could help people and not just report on their tragedies, what was once journalism no longer seemed to be. My pastor at the time offered me a job when one came available, and I took it. Believe it or not, church jobs make considerably less than TV jobs (: So, my wife, who was part time at Rocky Mountain Power, went full time. We made a leap of faith and have been so grateful we did. Melissa and I just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary at the Cathedral, where we were originally married. She has been a long-time catechist and currently serves as the Director of Religious Education at St. Joseph the Worker. Our 16-year-old son Braxton loves Cross Country and Track, and our 15-year-old daughter Isabelle loves Lacrosse, both competitively and at Juan Diego, where they both attend. We also have three Saint Bernard’s. We have become parishioners of the Cathedral and will be attending the 5:00 pm Mass. I am very blessed with my wonderful family and all the wonderful people, both staff and parishioners, at the Cathedral that I get to work, pray with, and learn from. It’s a fantastic team to be a part of and thank you all for being so welcoming. Please keep me in your prayers that I will make it to ordination, as I will pray for all people of the Cathedral.

- Jeremy Castellano, Adminstrator of Liturgy & Music

Fall tends to be a time of transitions, and the summer has been spent saying goodbye and thank you to some who have served this parish well, and hello to a few who are dedicating themselves to the mission of this parish.

Over the summer, we celebrated the 25 years that Arlie Llenares gave to this community as Administrator of Liturgy and Music. In her retirement, she and her family plan to travel to Hawaii, and hence she was honored with beautiful

Hawaiian leis and a hand embroidered dress, given alongside a Mass. We cannot express enough our gratitude to this selfless woman who has brought countless

blessings to our Church.

Adios y Hola

Updates

The patroness of our Cathedral celebrated a feast day on July 22nd, and a beautiful Mass was held to honor this saint that is constantly praying for our parishioners. A relic of St. Mary Magdalene was venerated at the Mass.

We believe Mary Magdalene to be the first person to whom Jesus appeared to post-Resurrection. She, who wept by the tomb, at first could not recognize the risen body of Christ. Only when He spoke her name, did she realize it was Him who had laid down His life for her standing before her. Let us, as Mary Magdalene, be attentive to the Resurrection of Christ, to Him who speaks our name bringing us to new life with Him.

But Mary stayed outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she bent over into the tomb and saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet where the body of Jesus had been. And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken my Lord, and I don’t know where they laid him.” When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus there, but did not know it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” She thought it was the gardener and said to him, “Sir, if you carried him away, tell me where you laid him, and I will take him.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni,” which means Teacher. Jesus said to her, “Stop holding on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am going to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and what he told her.
