Fr. Kevin’s Reflection The Advent and Christmas seasons are time periods in the year when we are invited to reflect on how God’s ways are not our ways and our way of looking at things is often not the correct way. The Advent season gives us a chance to be reflective but how many of us slow down and become reflective and how many of us find our days filled to overflowing with “one more thing”? We are supposed to be preparing our hearts and minds to greet the Christ Child … but the buying of gifts, the trim-ming of the tree, the baking of cookies and making of candies seems to take precedence. That is not to say that all those things are bad: they aren’t; but, are we keeping our focus as we preform them?

Helping grandma prepare for the Christmas meal was a great thrill in our family. There was laughter and storytelling of which Christmases were the best and which years were a challenge …all of which brings family together. Keeping our focus is the key element at this time of year and not letting ourselves be drawn into the “not so important things.”

Mary dropped everything and went to help Elizabeth setting us an example of putting the other first. But in our society today we sometimes forget that it is our “presence” not our presents that is most desired. Now don’t get me wrong … we all like presents; but, sometimes what is more important is being present to the other. While making the Christmas meals … we were present to each other. I think that is one childhood memory that will always be very clear in my mind, but these mo-ments don’t seem to happen as a family anymore (and there are days when I miss it). Not the meal … but … being with the family making the meal. As we continue our journey through Advent and into Christmas is there someone out there you need to be present to? Is there someone who might like a present of your presence? And if they are far away, maybe the present is your voice on the phone.

Jerome and Geralyn Malsom will be part of the Avera, January 2019, mission team to Jeremie, Haiti. Donations will be collected through Sunday, January 6th. Needed at the Gatineau clinic are small tubes of muscle rub, toothbrushes and tooth-paste. Needed for the children at Mother Theresa's (now St. Theresa of Calcutta) orphanage are new or gently worn athletic shoes for children ages 2 to 8. Cash donations made out to the Avera Foun-dation will be used to purchase prescription medi-cations. Cash donations made out to the Malso-m's will be used for ongoing projects, for the; treat-ment of diabetic patients at the clinic, goat program, save a family program and the water and sanitation community development program. Appreciated by the Haitians, of all ages, are matchbox cars! Last year, donations received included 150 pounds of supplies (clothing, toys and medications), $3,000.00 for the water and sanitation project, $1,000.00 for the save a family program, $900.00 for the purchase of goats for eight families, $265.00 for the Avera Foundation and $100.00 given to the Mother Theresa orphanage.
