ABOUT THE ANCHORAGELPD 23 is the seventh San Antonio-class Amphibious Transport Dock (LPD) ship, and was commissioned in her namesake city of Anchorage, Alaska. LPD 23 is the second ship to bear the name Anchorage.
Amphibious transport docks are warships that embark, transport, and land Marines, their equipment and supplies for a variety of expeditionary warfare missions. They can also serve as secondary aviation platforms for amphibious ready groups.
