Be Kind & Envision EquityDoreen Bartoldus, PE, CCM Assoc. DBIA ENV SPNAWIC PresidentIt is the 20th anniversary of 9/11 as I am writing this. The airwaves are full of historic stories of fear, then heroism, and the lingering effects of that day. One report especially stood out for me.

A young soldier, now a teacher, from Long Island, NY, was interviewed about Afghanistan and how he felt about everything now re�lecting on 9/11. He said the one thing that he remembers, and that we all need to remember, is how kind we all were to each other after 9/11 and that is what we, as a nation, need right now.

He was right. I witnessed all of it- the towers going down, the news of who we knew that were killed, and then the many months, into years of recovery for the area. And New Yorkers for sure became very mindful of their fellow human beings. The tragedy united us in our humanity.

More recently, we are still getting through a pandemic, social upheaval, and natural disasters affecting many regions. These issues have not hit everyone the same. Much inequity has been exposed. Women and people of color were hit hardest. The econom-ic fallout for those on lower economic scales, our service sector, suffered the most.

These latest tragedies have exposed our cultural inequities, and our failing infrastruc-ture, both hard and soft. As we plan to rebuild, it requires serious look at our ability to adapt, correct and protect- and be resilient. Plus, our true need to be kind, as we were after 9/11.

One of my hopes this year is to build a culture of equity. This starts with being kind. Then, to be serious about our own diversity and inclusion. To be the arbiters to our construction industry of what it means to be equitable in treatment, we need to look at ourselves �irst and then translate that education to our industry partners.

I am so mindful today of where we were 20 years ago (in tears at times) when more than 3000 fellow citizens, and a couple of friends, were killed in an attack. Additional-ly, I am very aware of where we are now with more than half million Americans dead from the pandemic and more suffering from natural disasters. These are paradigm shifts, forcing us to look at our culture. We need to re�lect and rebuild with compas-sion. Being kind gets de�ined as doing something for others with no expectation in return. (My mom would call it ‘Spreading Joy.’) Creating equity is compassion, it’s kindness. Be kind to yourself and to others.
