The ability to share notes is a key feature of Evernote. Teachers and students can share their notes easily by creating public links. Imagine being able to take a picture of a concept you covered in class, along with the notes, and easily send them to all of your students. Or, imagine being able to monitor a student’s progress for a report by having them “share” their notebook with the teacher.

If you create interactive lessons with software like SMART Notebook™, ActivInspire™, or RM Easiteach™, lesson pages can be exported as PDFs ,then imported right into Evernote. When a student completes an assignment from one of the pages of your interactive lesson, the student can export the page as a PDF, import it to Evernote, tag it appropriately, save it, and access it from anywhere at any time. This is the beginning of an online portfolio for each student.

But wait, there’s more! These next pages will highlight a collection of apps and services that work in the classroom and integrate together nicely with Evernote.

What is Evernote?Evernote is a cloud based service for creating notebooks, notes, and

lists which are accessible across multiple platforms, and from any location. Your virtual notebook can be edited or read from any device that connects to the Internet. Whether you are sitting at a computer in a classroom, or on the go with a mobile device, you will be able to access and edit any of your virtual notebooks. The notes can contain text, pictures, or documents from other applications, like PowerPoint. All that’s required to get started is creating a free account online.

Evernote’s intuitive design and ability to tag notes makes it a powerful organizational tool. Notes can be split amongst different notebooks, separated by subject, or any other way you choose to do so. The tagging feature allows notes to be easily searched by keyword or tags. For example, if you tag notes for a specific topic with the same keyword, you can easily find all of the notes associated with that tag.

Student Assignment: Prepare for an oral presentation and deliver it to the class. Students will explain the election process in the United States. The presentation must be 3-5 minutes long and include a speech outline with key talking points. Students must provide visual aids for reference during the presentation.

Evernote Apps used for the assignment: Evernote, Web Clipper, Clearly, Penultimate, Skitch, and Peek

In Evernote: Create a notebook for the presentation. Be organized! Use tags so you can easily find information during your research. Create a separate notebook for the speech outline and citations. Be prepared to share your notebooks with the teacher.

Evernote Clearly Have you ever visted a website and felt there were

too many distractions on the page? As a teacher you may want to highlight a certain section of the webpage and block out any advertisements, polls, or extra “noise.” Clearly does just that. Evernote Clearly is also an add-on tool that stays on your web browser. When enabled, Clearly transforms the website into an easy to read document, blocking out advertisements on the web page. There are a few customizable options for changing the font and background colors.

Once a page is transformed, Clearly's highlighting tools allow annotating right on the page. The web page can then be “clipped” with the Web Clipper, and sent to any notebook in your Evernote account. Anything you highlight will be included in the clipping. A teacher can view a website with students, highlight key parts of the webpage, then share that page, with highlights, to all students. Alternatively, a student can research a webpage, highlight key points, then share their findings with their teacher or peers.

The browser add on also shows you any notes you have from a site when you vist that site. Searches performed on Google, Yahoo, and Bing can also display results from your Evernote notebooks. Use the share functionality of Evernote and send the clipped website to all of your students, or create a web link.

Students can create a Notebook for a certain lesson, organize, and store various web clips for research projects. Students can explore the web page at any time without having to search again online.

With Web Clipper: While performing research online, use Web Clipper to collect information and save it your your notebooks.

With Clearly: Make clean clips of your web research and highlight as you go. You’ll capture the most important points in your notebooks to begin creating your presentation outline.

Evernote Web ClipperIf you're like me, you often find articles online that you would

like to save to read later and share. With the Web Clipper add-on to your web browser, or Web Clipper app for the iPad, you can do just that. Save anything — text, images, pages, parts of pages — right to your Evernote account.

PenultimatePenultimate is a handwriting app for the iPad, available for $0.99 in the

App Store. It’s an incredible value, as “you get the natural experience of writing on paper, with the power of Evernote and the flexibility of a tablet.“* Keep handwritten notes then sync them to Evernote Notebooks and access them from anywhere.

SkitchSkitch is an annotation app available on the iPad, iPhone, Mac, and

any Android device. Skitch allows you to take a picture, screenshot, or map and annotate over it. Add text, arrows, drawings, shapes, or even pixilate images. It’s connected to the Evernote family, so you can share the annotated images directly to an Evernote Notebook.

Using this simple annotation tool, a teacher can now send out any picture or diagram, then have students annotate them. An example is a teacher providing students with a diagram about the rock cycle that is not labeled. The student will have the ability to label the diagram, then share the annotated document back with the teacher. This form can be used as evidence suggesting the student understands the concept.

With Skitch: Annotate your pictures for visual aid during the presentation. Draw attention to key points for aiding visual learners. Send your images to Evernote to organize your visuals.

With Penultimate: Jot down your notes while performing research to begin crafting a presentation. Sketch a storyboard of the visuals and how they will work with an outline.

Imagine a project where students are designing a tower made of balloons and duct tape. With Penultimate, students can easily write notes and draw out their designs during the research process. Because Penultimate is connected with your Evernote account, students can send their drawings to an Evernote notebook and use all the features Evernote has to offer.

Evernote PeekEvernote Peek is a great app that uses the iPad Smart Cover

(http://www.apple.com/ipad/smart-cover/) to turn the iPad into a study guide. Create questions, flash cards and study guides. Track correct and incorrect answers, re-testing only the questions that were answered incorrect the first time.

Create study guides for your students, or even have them create ones for themselves. Using Evernote and Evernote Peek on an iPad allows you to take an old set of flashcards and convert them to a study guide. In preparation for a vocabulary test, the students can review using Evernote Peek to identify what vocabulary words they need more work on. As they go through the vocabulary study cards in Evernote Peek, they will mark which ones they got correct and incorrect. At the end they can go back to the ones they answered incorrectly to practice further.

With Peek: Practice key talking points and vocabulary skills. The student audience will use it to answer questions about the presentation for review. Share review question “notes” with other students.
