Thestoryalwaysseemstobethesame.Somepeoplebelievethatwhentheycangetsomethingforless,theyaresavingmoney.AgoodexamplemightbeanincidentweexperiencedwhiletheLBIbook-testinglaboratoryatRITwasstillinoperation.Insomecountries,textbookbindingsforschoolsmustbesmyth-sewn.Ifboundinac-cordancetoMSSTspecifications,thosebindingsrequirethattheendsheetsarereinforcedwithacottoncloth(jointmuslin).Thatreinforcementisthenwrappedaroundthefirstandlastsignaturesand,aftercasing-in,theymustextendontothecoverboardsatleast5/8inch.Needlesstosay,suchreinforcementsdoaddtothecostofaqualitybinding.Unfortunately,therehavebeenmanytimeswherepublishingproductionmanagerstriedtosavesomemoneybyopting,inspiteofbookbinderrecommendation,nottoreinforcetheendpapersontheirsometimesveryheavy

andlargeSmyth-sewnbookblocks.Itnevertooklongfordisastertostrikeandforpeopletostartpointingfingersatoneanother.Onesuchincidentinvolvedaschoolbookad-ministratorwho,eagertoshowoffhisorhermoneysavingskills,optedtoeliminatethattypeofendpaperreinforce-mentonschooltextbooks.Theadviceandwarningsgivenbyoneofthetechnicalsalesrepresentativessupplyingthereinforcingfabricweresimplyignored.Withoutthatparticu-larreinforcement,thebooks/bindingsnolongerlastedaslongastheyusedto,andtheschoolsbegantocomplain.Replacetextbooksmuchearlierthananticipatedhadabigimpactonschoolbudgets.Anactiveexpertinourindus-trycametoourlabandtumbletestedidenticaltextbooks

Theserein-forcedhard-coverbindingswerepromotedandsoldtolibraryandschoolenviron-ments.Manyofushaveheardthosesalespitchesthatclaimthesebindingsare“justasgoodas…”Fortu-nately,withourknowledgeandexperience,wearefullyawareifwearegettingabargainornot.Ifbindingsfailsoonerthanex-pected,skilledbookbinderscanbecontact-edtoblowthewhistle.InNorthAmerican,therearespecialized

bindingfacilitiesinbusinesstoconvertoriginalsoftcoverbooksintoreinforcedhardcoverbooks.WhiletheymaynotallmeetorexceedthespecificationsasoutlinedintheNISO/LBIStandard,mostofthebindingstructuresareatleasttumbletestedtoensurethatthebuyersofthesebindingswillgetagoodreturnontheirinvestment.Onmostoftheseoriginalsoftcoverbooks,theoriginalhotmeltadhesiveisremoved.TheyaretheneitherdoublefanadhesiveboundorreceiveastrongPURcoatingontothespine.Ifmarginsallowit,thebookblocksareside-sewn,usingaspecifiedthreadandmuslinreinforcedendpapers.Inthepast,membersofLBIhavehadtheprivilegeofvisit-

ingseveraloftheseMidwesternbindingestablishments.Wenotedthatremovingtheoriginalsoftcoverfromthebookblockmustbeoneofthemostdifficulttasks.Theside-gluingusedontheoriginalisoftenstillsticky.Onceremoved,bindersusemoderneditionbindingequip-menttoconvertthebooksintoqualityhardcoverbooks,ca-pableofwithstandingtheharshendusetreatmentsinschoolsandlibraries.

Asmentionedearlier,thesuspi-ciouslibrarianrecognizedthepoorhardcoverbindingqualityreceivedfromAsia.They,toohadconvertedoriginalsoftcoverbooksintohardcoverbind-ings.Observationsmadewhenexaminingsomeofthesebookssenttothisbookbindingexpertweresimplyunbelievable.Thebindingshadnoneoronlyflimsyreinforcements,noflannelspinelinings,question-ablestitches,threadsandquestionableproceduresoverall.Nowonderthesebindingsdidnotlast.Ifonepaysapre-miumforhardcoverbindings,itisreasonabletoexpectabetterqualitythantheoriginalsoftcoverbinding,especially
