Let’s Not Forget: Community is Collective

It’s no news that this year marks the bicentennial of Chile’s history as an independent country. Sometime along the later half of those curious 200 years, Lo Barnechea was first penciled in on a map, and so began its story. It grew, slowly but surely, as a peaceful and sometimes forgotten outskirt of Santiago, its first neighbors enjoying the empty and sleepy rural life. The years rolled by slowly, and only a few noticed when a little school perched itself on the top of one of the nearby hills, the same school this paper happens to be printed in. Nido grew with Lo Barnechea, sometimes in the spotlight, sometimes only quietly acknowledged. And now, they stand together: Nido and Lo

Barnechea facing the turn of an era, the historic birthdate of a nation, and a perfect moment for reflection.

Many claim (or perhaps its more of a shared feeling), that Nido functions in the margins of the community that surrounds it. Some perceive our reality to be that of a pantheon sitting atop mount Olympus, overlooking our surroundings condescendingly. Nothing, though, could be farther from the truth. Nido, luckily, is a school that constantly and tirelessly goes out of its way to interact with its community. From culture to charitable efforts, the school is constantly reaching out, hoping to create a permanent interaction between itself and its surroundings.

Yet there’s a huge disparity at play here. The school does its job, and the students play along. It sometimes can feel too much like a game, a fabrication of sorts: as soon as the contract runs out, everyone happily heads home, knowing that they have done something to contribute to their “community”. Something it seems, a very primal, essential something, is nonetheless missing. To many and most, Lo Barnechea is no more than a picturesque commune that so happens to exist along the route they take to school. There’s a link missing, a link more important and profound than any the school couldever hope to inspire. It’s a connection, a true and meaningful

connection, between the students and the community. Despite the activities, despite the efforts, even despite the natural disasters that the school and Lo Barnechea have braved through together, there is still a feeling that we belong separated, and that we should lead our lives according to this separation. What better time than the bicentennial to reflect on this unfortunate frame of mind? What better time to remember that the school, its surroundings, and its neighbors have grown and learnt

together. As individuals, we have to recognize it: there has to be a conscious, meditated desire to help and integrate our community. It’s a

hard thing to keep in mind, and yet it’s absolutely vital. It’s not something to be done from one day to the next, but we as students desperately need to rekindle that

desire, that will, to integrate all those around us. And above all, this effort is something that the students, not the “infrastructure”, must do. It’s simple for the school assign work, expecting students to live a connection with the

community; it’s even harder and more important for that connection to come from within. Faced with the doors of the bicentennial, it’s something small to think about.

El año 2010 marca el bicentenario de Chile y su estatus como nación independiente. En algún momento durante la segunda mitad de estos 200 años, Lo Barnechea fue, por primera vez, dibujada en un mapa; así comenzó su historia. Lo Barnechea, una tranquila y a veces olvidada comuna en las afueras de Santiago creció lenta pero segura, sus vecinos disfrutando día a día de la callada y somnolienta vida rural.Los años pasaban lentamente, y sólo unos pocos se dieron cuenta cuando un pequeño colegio se asentó en la cima de una de las colinas circundantes, el mismo colegio que hoy imprime este periódico. Nido creció con Lo Barnechea, a veces en el foco de la atención, a veces contentándose con nada más que meras alusiones a su existencia. Ahora Nido y Lo Barnechea enfrentan juntos el transcurso de una era: el histórico cumpleaños de una nación y también el momento perfecto para la reflexión. Muchos dicen (o tal vez sea más un sentimiento generalizado), que Nido funciona en los márgenes de la comunidad que lo rodea. Algunos perciben nuestra realidad como la de un panteón, sentado solitariamente sobre el Olimpo, vigilando los alrededores condescendientemente. Nada, sin

embargo, podría distanciarse más de la verdad. Nido es un colegio que, incansablemente, hace todo lo posible para interactuar con la comunidad. Desde la cultura hasta los esfuerzos caritativos, la escuela extiende la mano constantemente, siempre tratando de crear una interacción permanente entre sí y sus alrededores. Sin embargo, hay una enorme disparidad oculta detrás de la fachada. El colegio hace su trabajo, y los estudiantes el suyo. A veces se asemeja demasiado a un juego, un mecanismo forzado: apenas caduca el contrato, todos vuelven a sus casas sabiendo que hicieron algo para contribuir a su “comunidad”. Falta algo, algo sumamente esencial y primal. Para varios (me atrevería decir que también la mayoría), Lo Barnechea no es más que un barrio pintoresco al que por casualidad deben pasartodos los días en camino al colegio. Falta un vínculo, una mentalidad mucho más importante y profunda: una que el colegio sólo, no puede esperar inspirar. Falta una conexión, una potente y significativa conexión entre los estudiantes y la comunidad de Lo Barnechea. A pesar de las actividades, a pesar de los esfuerzos, a pesar incluso de los desastres naturales que hemos

tenido que vivir todos juntos, sigue existiendo un sentimiento nocivo de que pertenecemos separados, y que deberíamos vivir de acuerdo a esta separación. ¿Qué mejor que el bicentenario para reflexionar sobre esta accidentada mentalidad? Que mejor momento para acordarse de que el colegio, sus alrededores, sus vecinos y nosotros, hemos crecido todos juntos. Como individuos, debemos reconocer la necesidad de un esfuerzo consciente y meditado, la necesidad de un deseo de ayudar e integrar a la comunidad. Puede resultar difícil imprimirlo en nuestras vidas, y sin embargo, es absolutamente vital. No es algo que se haga de un día para otro, pero nosotros como estudiantes necesitamos, desesperadamente, volver a encender ese deseo, ese espíritu de integración con todos los que nos rodean. Pero sobre todo, éste debe ser un esfuerzo de los estudiantes, no de la “infraestructura”. Es muy fácil dejar que el colegio haga todo el trabajo, y esperar que sólo con eso los estudiantes vivan una conexión con la comunidad; es aún más difícil e importante que esa conexión surja de nuestro trabajo, nuestro esfuerzo, y nuestra conciencia. Enfrentados con las puertas del bicentenario, es algo que sería bueno repensar.

For Too Long, We’ve Been SilentJuAN VIVANCO

2007 was the magical year when Ban Ki-moon stepped in as the united Nations’ Secretary-General, the year when Nicolas Sarkozy was elected president of France, the year when a bimillenial melon was discovered, and the year when the Harry Potter saga ended. It was also the year when one could walk to science classes without

making it a field trip. Sadly, it also happened to be the last year of the school’s newspaper, The Nest, which was an inspiration that drove the creation of For the Record, The Nest represents at least a decade’s worth of continuous printing of the high school’s ideas and opinions. As with most other societies organized around a common goal, for the past three years, the high school community has been in dire need

of a medium with which to express its voice. We can hear that voice all around campus—in the halls, in the cafeteria, and in the classrooms. We are here to tell you about Prom, and about homework. We are here to tell you about the thirty-three miners, and about the uN. We are here to write what we think, what we feel, and what we want to change. For The Record is my voice, your voice, and our voice.

Ese mágico año cuando Ban Ki-moon asumió como el Secretario-General de la Naciones unidas, Nicolás Sarkozy fue electo presidente de Francia, un melón bimilenario fue descubierto y la saga de Harry Potter llegó a su fin (también fue el año cuando uno aún podía asistir a las clases de ciencias sin hacer de ello una excursión). Éste fue además el

último año que se publicó The Nest (El Nido). The Nest fue una de las más importantes inspiraciones para For The Record, ya que representó por más de una década, las ideas y opiniones de los estudiantes de enseñanza media. Así como en la gran mayoría de otras sociedades, la sección de enseñanza media del Nido de Águilas necesitaba, a gritos, un medio por el cual expresar su voz. Esa voz que todos escuchamos alrededor del campus—en los

pasillos, en el casino, y en las aulas. Estamos aquí para contarte acerca del baile de graduación, así como también de los trabajos escolares. Estamos aquí para contarte acerca de los 33 mineros, como también de las Naciones unidas. Estamos aquí para escribir lo que nosotros pensamos, lo que nosotros sentimos, y lo que nosotros queremos cambiar. For the Record es mi voz, tu voz y nuestra voz.

It’s been 200 years since the first Chilean stepped on this land of mountains and deserts and choripanes. It’s been 76 years since this school first began to instill knowledge in our heads and textbooks in our backpacks. And now, along with the celebration of Chile’s Bicentennial, we celebrate the first issue of For the Record, our own Nido high school newspaper, which is bound to be celebrating years of existence in the future. So you’ve picked up this issue

between leaving a class and sprinting up to the cafeteria for that much-needed cup of coffee. And I’m sure you’ve at least noticed the bold letters on the front page—that’s right, the title. For the Record. So why this choice? Don’t doubt it, we spent a lot of time deciding on an appropriate, enticing, steal-your-attention-from-that-book-you-are-trying-to-finish-before-break-ends title. And this is what we came up with. For 200 years, there have been records of this country, For 76, of this school. Then, there

is everything there are no records of. And finally, all these events are on separate documents, separate mindframes, and none from the eyes of a Nido student. So, in these 16 pages, we will try to bring together the point of view of a Chilean Huaso, of the cafeteria workers, of the Facebook addict, and of Franco. We need a record of the records, and of all the “off-the-records”, too. So here it is, our attempt of our own record, in all its snowed, stressed, patriotic, french-fry stained glory.

Han pasado 200 años desde que el primer chileno pisó esta tierra de montañas y desiertos y choripanes. Han pasado 76 años desde que este colegio comenzó a inculcar conocimiento en nuestros cerebros y libros en nuestras mochilas. Y ahora, con la celebración del bicentenario de Chile, celebramos la primera edición de For the Record, nuestro propio diario de la secundaria de Nido, la cual sin duda estará celebrando años de existencia en un futuro. Entonces, recogiste esta edición entre que salías de clase y corrías a la cafetería para un muy necesitado

café. Seguramente, te diste cuenta de las grandes letras en la primera página—sí, hablo del título: For the Record. Te preguntarás, ¿Por qué? No lo dudes, estuvimos mucho tiempo tratando de encontrar un título apropiado, interesante, un título suficientemente bueno para quitarte la atención de ese libro que tratas de terminar antes que comienze tu próxima clase. Y llegamos a esto: Por 200 años han habido registros de este país. Por 76, de este colegio. Y por mucho más tiempo, de lugares que ahora se encuentran al alcanze de un avión(o nave espacial). También están todos los hechos que nunca fueron registrados. Y todos

estos archivos(o falta de ellos) están separados, no solo físicamente sino que además en sus perspectivas, y ninguno está escrito desde el punto de vista de un estudiante de Nido. Entonces, en estas 16 páginas, intentaremos juntar la realidad de un huaso chileno, de las trabajadoras de la cafetería, del adicto al Facebook, y de Franco. Necesitamos un registro de los registros que ya existen, y de los que no existen también. Les presentamos nuestro propio intento, en toda su gloria, tan nevada y estresada y manchada por las papas fritas del recreo con las cuales lees esto.

Among Friends and Fondas Whether you are Chilean or a newcomer to this country, you have probably heard of the celebration that takes place on September 18th. For those of you that have lived a “dieciocho” (eighteen in Spanish) or two, you know school will be out for a week and the country will enjoy immense festivity during this time. Chilean patriotism and pride will shine from every face as everyone indulges and expresses his or her ‘Chilean-ness’ (vague as the expression may be). Chilean flags will be raised and displayed, kites will swarm the skies, and dancers will get ready for the ever-present ‘cueca’ dance (traditional Chilean folkdance). With all the joyous ruckus and festivities, however, we sometimes forget that the 18th of September was a milestone in Chilean history—it was the first meeting held by the soon-to-be Chilean government (1810). The junta’s purpose was to organize Chile while King Fernando the Seventh (king of Spain) struggled against the Napoleonic invasion. The meeting signaled the beginning of the independence

crusade; it was also a matter of celebration. Apparently, the new Chileans took this celebration business seriously: by the afternoon of September 18, 1810, the dieciocho commemorations were set as law—the ‘fondas’ being appointed as the venues for them. Truth be told, fondas (where dieciocho is normally celebrated) existed before 1810. Back then, fondas were known as ‘chinganas’. These served as places for reunions of the “pueblo bajo”—hillbillies in American English—where poorly-distilled grape alcohol, ‘buñuelos’ (a round pastry) and, of course music, were enjoyed.

This year marks the two hundreth anniversary of the dieciocho celebrations; little has changed since 1810. Traditions such as the ‘chicha’ (fermenated grape or apple cider), empanadas, and folk games remain popular today. While the overall structure of the ‘fondas’ remains the same, there are now fondas attended by the higher class as well. The never-changing human habit of drinking “just one more” drink is as prevalent now as it was back then. However, now it

is the ‘Carabineros’ that discipline the overly rowdy, as opposed to the old ‘Policía de Buen Orden’ (dedicated to upholding the Catholic standards of the early republic). Nowadays however, the stomping of the cueca is less popular than the ‘perreo’ of the ‘reggeaton’, the back and forth sway of the cumbia, and the strumming of the ‘ranchera’. Yet, the ‘fonda’ remains a deeply rooted tradition in the heart of any proper Chilean. So while you enjoy an empanada, or try to imitate a rooster catching a hen in the cueca, you might want to take a second to be proud of being part of this centruies-old tradition.

Entre zapateos y empanadas Sean chilenos o ex-tranjeros residentes los que lean este artículo, algunos de ustedes habrán escuchado sobre la celebración del 18 de septiembre. Para los que ya han vivido unos dieciochos en Chile sabrán que el colegio se cierra una semana y que el país experimenta una época de dicha y festividad inmensa. Se exalta la “chilenidad” (por más vaga que aquella expresión suene), se alzan banderas chilenas, los volantines inundan los cielos y se preparan las suelas para el siempre bien ponderado pie de cueca. Con tal explosión de júbilo, se nos olvida a veces que el 18 de septiembre marca un hito; la primera Junta de Gobierno llevada acabo en el año 1810, que se señala como el inicio del proceso independentista en la aún por aquellos años colonia del r e i n o español. A grandes rasgos habría que decir que la primera junta de gobierno buscaba organizar

gubernamentalmente a Chile, en tiempos que el rey español de la época (Fernando VII) era apresado por Napoleón. Siendo este un hito de tal relevancia era de esperarse una celebración a la altura de las circunstancias. Y al parecer esto de la celebración fue tomado al pie de la letra, ya que se cuenta que la misma noche del 18 de septiembre se dispuso la

instalación de una ramada para celebrar lo decidido en la Junta de Gobierno. Si bien este dato puede ser accesorio, la verdad sea dicha las fondas existían mucho antes del 18 de septiembre de 1810. Las fondas de nuestra época eran conocidas como chinganas por aquel entonces. Las

chinganas eran el lugar de reunión del “bajo pueblo”, en el cual se llevaban acabo celebraciones acompañadas de alcohol, buñuelos fritos y la infaltable música. Con una improvisada estructura de

palos, totora, guirnaldas y ramas de palmera se tenía una chingana. Cuando Chile alcanzó su esperada independencia, se empezó a celebrar el aniversario de la primera junta de gobierno de la mano de las fondas/chinganas. Hasta el día de hoy la tradición perdura, salvo que con

algunas diferencias. Aún se toma chicha, se comen empanadas/anticuchos, se practican juegos populares y la estructura de la fonda se trata de mantener. Pero todo cambia y existen en el presente fondas donde

también asisten las clases más acomodadas. Tanto en el pasado como en el presente, muchos compatriotas se van de copas, solo que hoy en día son carabineros y no decretos de “La policía de Buen Orden” los que castigan estos hechos. La cueca (zamacueca antiguamente), tiene muchísima menos presencia que la cumbia, el reggeaton y las rancheras. Al margen de los cambios, la celebración sigue estando decididamente arraigada en este país, por lo que no sería malo darse una vuelta y conocer un poco más de estas tradicionales fiestas, en éste, el año del bicentenario de Chile.

In the High School, Mr. Franco is well-known, but for more than senior graduation, or for the long time he has been teaching at Nido (long before all of us!). He has a reputation for being a spectacular teacher and a charming person. But why? What lies behind such a teacher?

FTR: DID YOu ALWAYS WANT TO BE A TEACHER? Always. Yes, always. Well, honestly, when I was very young, I wanted to be an actor. Afterwards, I was interested in becoming a ballet dancer, because I liked everything that was physical, you know, sports and such. That led to wanting to become a physical education teacher. But when I realized how much one can learn and teach from books, whether in science, mathematics, philosophy, literature, or history, I realized that I wanted to teach something that was related to books, because one can learn so much from them—they open a whole new world. And I chose literature because in my opinion it has so much to teach, and it’s so beautiful.

FTR: DO YOu LIKE BALLET?Yes, I love it. I find the music

extremely beautiful, and the dance is spectacular. I really enjoy it.

FTR: DID YOuR STuDENTS MAKE YOu ANY WISER? Do you remember the graduation of the generation of 2010? Cynthia [Ms. González] mentioned in her speech that when she arrived to Nido, she asked me what it was I liked best about this school, and I said, the students. I think I might have the Peter Pan syndrome, that is, the desire to stay a child forever, and to be alive (yet by this I mean the kind of youth found in the mind

and spirit, not really in the body.) And my students teach me this! They have a degree of kindness, of purity that is so linked with their age.

They have taught me about animal rights! The students in my class would not even kill a cockroach— just like Wall-E—for they care so much about this issue. My students teach me kindness; they compel me to be younger, and to stay in this school.

FTR: WHAT QuALITY DO YOu MOST ADMIRE IN A PERSON? I admire authenticity and transparency. It’s extremely important for me that people are

true to who they are, and that they will be themselves and not what society tells them to beme kindness; they compel me to be younger, and to stay in this school.

FTR : WHAT ARE YOuR PASSIONS? Nature, and the animal world. And balance. Yet I don’t think these can be called passions…maybe you could call my passions living well, which implies balance; and being able to do what you want—I mean being able to eat at the time t h a t you wish to eat, watch television at the time you wish to. Having that kind of freedom.

FTR: WHAT ARE YOuR MOST FINELY MARKED CHARACTERISTICS?B e i n g h a p p y — n o t

satisfied, but happy—with myself. And projecting that happiness, of course.

FTR: OF ALL THE THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING IN THIS

WORLD, WHAT DO YOu THINK IS THE

MOST TERRIBLE OF THEM ALL?Injustice. You cannot imagine how much it hurts me to see that some people are so poor, while others, just the opposite. I definitely think it’s injustice.

En el High School, muchos conocen a Mr. Franco, pero por más que simplemente las presentaciones e introducciones en las graduaciones al final del año, o por estar en el colegio desde hace mucho antes que la mayoría de nosotros. Dicen que es un profesor espectacular y una persona muy entretenida. Pero ¿por qué? ¿Qué h a y detrás de un profesor así?

FTR: ¿SIEMPRE QuISO SER PROFESOR?Siempre. Sí, siempre. Bueno, la verdad es que, cuando era niño, quería estudiar ballet, después quise ser actor y cantante o músico en parte por que me gustaba todo lo que era artístico y atlético,y todos los deportes. Por eso después quise ser profesor de Educación

Física… pero, cuando me di cuenta cuánto uno puede aprender y enseñar a través de los libros, ya sea ciencias, matemáticas, filosofía, historia, decidí que quería ser profesor de alguna materia que tuviera que ver con TODO, Y elegí Literatura porque, en los librosestá el pasado , el presente y el futuro de la Humanidad .

FTR: ¿LE GuSTA EL BALLET?Sí, me fascina; la belleza de la música, y lo espectacular de los movimientos de los bailarines así como el trabajado estado atlético que se requiere.

FTR: A TRAVÉS DE SuS AñOS COMO PROFESOR, SuS ESTuDIANTES OBVIAMENTE HAN APRENDIDO MuCHO DE uSTED. ¿QuÉ DIRÍA QuE HA APRENDIDO uSTED DE ELLOS?Mira, ¿te acuerdas de la graduación del curso del 2010, el que se graduó en junio? Cynthia (Ms. Gonzáles) mencionó en el discurso que dio, que cuando ella llegó al Nido, me preguntó qué era lo que más me gustaba del colegio. Yo le respondí que eran los estudiantes con su juventud alegría y sus deseos de vivir Creo que “ padezco” un poco del síndrome de Peter Pan seguir siendo muy joven para siempre. Y mis estudiantes me enseñan eso, me hacen querer seguir acompañándolos durante la vida estudiantil (la felicidad ronda en la mente y en el espíritu de los alumnos del Nido).

Ah, ¡Y la defensa de los animales! ¿Sabes? , en mi clase, los estudiantes no matan ni a una cucaracha—como Wall-E—con todo lo que les importa el medio ambiente. Siempre llegamos a la conclusión de que el planeta debe ser compartido equilibradamente por los animales y los humanos.

FTR: ¿QuÉ CuALIDAD ADMIRAS MÁS EN uNA PERSONA?

La autenticidad, la nitidez, la transparencia, la

sanidad, la honradez. Para mí es muy

importante que una persona sea honesta

consigo misma y por supuesto con los demás.

FTR: ¿CuÁLES SON SuS PASIONES?

Los animales, la naturaleza y por supuesto el buen vivir,

el equilibrio. Pero no sé si son pasiones… Supongo que vivir

bien, implica paz y tranquilidad. Y otra de mis pasiones es Nido.

Three Things I’ve Realized as a Senior Now that I’ve become a senior and become conscious of the million (okay, not that many) things I have to do, I can’t help but think, “Ahh, I wish I had realized that when I was a freshman/sophomore/junior!” Underclassmen, although you probably aren’t going to know everything that you need or want to know before you are seniors, theseare 3 things that I would have found useful had I known them earlier:

1. IF YOu ARE PLANNING TO TAKE THE SAT, GET IT OVER WITH AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! I started caring about the SAT a little after first semester of junior year, and I seriously don’t know why I didn’t start caring earlier. My parents bought me around 10 of those huge SAT books when I was a freshman I had not opened even one of them until this past summer. Now I realize that it was a mistake. The problem with SAT and senior year is not that there aren’t enough SAT tests, it is that it interferes with so many other things including your extracurricular activities, college applications/researching, and (if you are taking it) everything that goes with the IB Diploma (EE, CAS, TOK, oral commentaries, etc.). Seriously, the SAT is boring stuff. If you can take the SAT off your shoulders right away, believe me, you are going to be so much more relieved and happy. I can assure you that freshman and sophomore years are going to be easier than junior and senior year,

so freshmen and sophomores—start practicing your SAT so you get the score you want before senior year! Juniors, don’t leave the SAT for senior year!

2. GET TO KNOW SOME GOOD/INTERESTING COLLEGES BEFORE YOuR SENIOR YEAR! This is what I did when I realized I am applying to colleges in a few months: I typed in Google “list of colleges”, clicked on “u.S. Colleges, Alphabetic”, and started reading the names of colleges. “Hmm, Eureka College (IL) sounds interesting. Oh wait! Excelsior College (NY) has a really nice name.

But Golden Gate university (CA) sounds really… golden.” That is seriously how I am considering what college I will apply to these days. I have no idea what college suits me or in what region I would like to go to college. I just know I want to go to college. You really don’t want to go through an alphabetic list of colleges and be in a situation as pathetic as mine when you are a senior. Don’t be like me when I was an underclassman and

think that it doesn’t matter if I listen or not because college is so far away. Time goes by terribly fast and before you want it, you’re already a senior. I really recommend you start looking at colleges sooner rather than later. Also, take advantage of college fairs! They can really give you a lot of good information. Researching now is really going to help you out later when you need to narrow down your college

list. Researching about colleges can be fun, but not when you are 3 months away from having to make final decisions!

3. KNOW WHAT CLASSES ARE NECESSARY FOR CERTAIN MAJORS/COLLEGES! IB classes are only 2 years, but guess who is taking 3 years of IB Chemistry? I am! Chemistry is very fun and interesting, but that is not the reason for my third year. It turns out that certain colleges and majors that I might be interested in (but am not sure since I haven’t done much college research) require Chemistry HL instead of Chemistry SL (which I completed in sophomore and junior year), so this year I am taking Chemistry HL. I don’t have any problem with taking it another year,but in practical terms, it is as if I had wasted an entire year of Chemistry by taking the wrong class. To avoid having to take a class for three years when you could do it in two, research about the colleges and majors you want to study. This might not only save you a year of taking unnecessary courses, but it might also prevent disappointment (since sometimes you think you have all the necessary criteria to apply). From first-hand experience, I know colleges in Asia and Europe can be very picky with what they want!

The idea is, get informed. Be proactive. You might even be able to fit in some senioritis into your last year of highschool if you pay attention to the above tips!

Tres cosas de las que me doy cuenta ahora Ahora que soy una “senior” y me doy cuenta de las millones (bueno, un poco menos de millones) de cosas que tengo que hacer no puedo dejar de pensar “Ah, ¡por qué no me di cuenta de esto antes!” Aunque probablemente los que no estan en cuarto medio no van a saber todo lo que necesitan o quieren saber antes de sus últimos años, estas son las 3 cosas que me hubieran sido útiles si las hubiese sabido:

1. SI ESTÁS PLANEANDO TOMAR EL SAT, ¡TÓMALO TAN PRONTO COMO SEA POSIBLE!Yo empecé a preocuparme por el SAT un poco después del primer semestre del junior year, y no entiendo como pude

haber sido tan boba de no empezar a hacerlo antes. Mis padres me compraron

unos 10 de esos enormes libros de SAT cuando yo era una freshman, pero no abrí ni siquiera uno de ellos hasta el verano pasado. Ahora me doy cuenta de mi gran error. El problema con el SAT y el último año no es que no haya suficientes oportunidades para tomarla, el problema es que interfiere con tantas otras cosas incluyendo tus actividades extracurriculares, las

aplicaciones de la universidad, y—si lo estás tomando—todo lo que el Diploma del Bachillerato Internacional te pide (EE, CAS, TOK, comentarios orales, etc.). El SAT es la cosa más latosa del mundo. Si puedes sacar el SAT de tu lista de cosas que hacer, créeme, vas a ser una persona feliz. Les puedo asegurar que el primer y

segundo año van a ser más fáciles que el tercer y cuarto año, así que estudiantes de primero y segundo medio: ¡empiezen a estudiar para el SAT para que obtengan el puntaje que quieran antes de ser seniors! Estudiantes de tercer año: ¡no dejen el SAT para el último año!

2. CONOCE ALGuNAS uNIVERSIDADES INTERESANTES ANTES DE Tu úLTIMO AñO!Esto es lo que hice cuando me di cuenta que voy a mandar mis documentos a universidades en unos pocos meses: tecleé en Google “lista de los colegios”, hice clic en “EE.uu.Colegios, por orden alfabético “, y empeze a leer los nombres de los colegios. “Hmm, Eureka College (Illinois) suena interesante. Oh, espera! Excelsior College (NY) tiene un nombre muy bonito.

Pero la universidad Golden Gate (Cali.)... ¡tiene un nombre realmente dorado!”. Estos días así es como estoy considerando a qué universidades voy a aplicar. No tengo idea que universidad me conviene o en qué región me gustaría estudiar. Sólo sé que quiero ir una universidad. De verdad, cuando estes en último año, no quieres pasar por una lista alfabética de los colegios y estar en una situación tan patética como en la que estoy yo. No subestimes esta decisión, como lo hize yo. El tiempo pasa rápido y antes de que lo quieras ya estas en cuarto medio. Te recomiendo empezar a buscar sobre universidades que parezcan interesantes cuando no tengas nada mejor que hacer.

¡Aprovecha las ferias universitarias!: realmente te puede dar una gran cantidad de buena información. Investigar ahora realmente te va a ayudar más adelante. Investigar sobre universidades puede ser divertido pero no cuando estás en mi situación, ¡a tres meses antes de solicitar admisión!

3. AVERIGuA LAS CLASES QuE NECESITAS PARA CIERTAS CARRERAS/uNIVERSIDADES!Las clases del Bachillerato Internacional son de sólo 2 años, pero yo estoy tomando 3 años de química. La química es divertida y todo, pero esa no es la razón por la que la estoy tomando un tercer año de ella. Resulta que ciertas universidades y carreras

en las que estoy (tal vez) interesada requieren BI Química de nivel superior en vez de BI Química de nivel estándar (la cual complete), así que este año estoy tomando Química HL. No tengo ningún problema con tomar otro año, pero en términos prácticos, es como si hubiera perdido un año entero de Química por tomar la clase equivocada.Investiga con anticipación las universidades y carreras en las que estas interesado. Esto no sólo podría ahorrarte un año de clases, pero también podría ahorrarte un trago amargo como el que yo pase (ya que a veces uno piensa que cumple todos los requisitos necesarios para aplicar, pero se le escapa una formalidad inapelable).

All right, so I know what you’re thinking. “Luis you silly duck… we are not better off without the internet… pretty much most of our days are spent with some kind of screen in front of us making our lives easier!” Well, here is the part where I blow your mind. Kind of like a TOK discussion, but without the “ok” bit. Below, the explanation as to why you should burn all laptops before they give you a mental disorder, make you a worse person, make you kill your family, or simply scares the lolcats out of you.

#6. IT TAKES PROCRASTINATION TO THE POINT WHERE MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY IS NECESSARY Everyone knows the Internet is a quick source for some sweet, sweet procrastination. Whether it’s watching that Friends episode over and over on YouTube, or simple clicking on the “random article” button on Wikipedia to see if you will ever find something slightly amusing to you, we all have our own little ways to pretend work doesn’t exist.

I personally prefer this method.

The most common source of procrastination these days is, of course, Facebook. Ah… what a smart way to keep up with old friends and acquaintances! Surely it is purely a medium for communication, and there is no way for anyone to ever get addicted to it in an unhealthy and humiliating way!

Why that Last Sentence Was Sarcastic: With unlimited use of a little status bar, normal people can post a short sentence on their feelings, their day or a simple, short joke. All for no cost and no repercussions! unless… you cannot stand when no one has anything to comment, so you post a

new status, and keep your hopes up.

Some just abuse of this little freedom of expression—like their lives depend on it, like their friends need to know every moment of wit they come across, like they simply need a bit more recognition in the online world so they may rest easy at night. This kind of disorder, this incredible craving to be appreciated and the non-stop pressing of the F5 key to check for comments or updates, is known as LFT, or Low Frustration Tolerance. It can be diagnosed in people with constant use of ultimatum phrases such as “I gotta start working on my essay or I will die and my teachers will dance around my corpse.” These are people who cannot stand (or claim to not be able to stand) most situations and seek instant sympathy through the internet. It is impatience at its best. Hopefully, you aren’t one of those to tally the number of comments on your status. Still it is best to avoid Facebook altogether, seeing as…

#5. FACEBOOK WILL MAKE YOu ITS SLAVE For the ones unfamiliar with Facebook groups (anyone?), they are pretty much small clubs that you can join online by the click of a, well, a click. They help support causes with groups such as: “For every person that joins this group I will donate one dollar to cancer research”. It is evidently a heartfelt approach at bringing people together, in an effort to tackle the world’s biggest problems—one click at a time.

Why That Last Sentence Was Sarcastic: Okay, it is true. Some groups out there really are for helping causes or bringing people together under one name. But for every group dedicated to the community, there are a million others dedicated to a pointless and violating

use of wit. And you will join them all.

So how does Facebook make a slave out of you? By joining, a.k.a. liking groups, suddenly you are bombarded by suggestions as to which group you should join next! What—you thought that sidebar just somehow guessed what you would find funny? May the mindless clicking begin! Apart from that, there is the classic, “If 100,000,000 people join, I will (insert action here)” group. Groups made for really the promise of some sort of humiliating act that could easily be found on YouTube, and no real strings attaching anyone to his promise. Except maybe the fear of being Facebook-poked to death.

I don’t think I can take any more of these

But hey, you, you attend the International School Nido De Aguilas. Surely, you see past the absurdity behind joining these pointless groups! You even know how to solve this issue! You are the Shakespeare and Picasso of Facebook! You..! You… you tried…

All the world’s TOK teachers couldn’t help you break this cycle.

Muy bien, se que lo que está pensando. “Luis… viejo loco… quién le ha dicho que estamos mejor sin el internet… prácticamente la mayor parte de nuestro tiempo la pasamos frente a una pantalla que nos hace la vida más fácil!” Bueno, le voy a explicar por qué todo lo que usted sabe y cree que entiende del internet está incorrecto. Casi como una discusión de TOK, pero sin que usted siga estando, “ok”. Abajo, las razones por las cuales le conviene quemar todos los portátiles en su hogar antes de que le den un desorden mental, lo hagan una peor persona, lo hagan quemar a su familia, o simplemente lo asusten tanto que se va a terminar cambiando hasta las medias.

#6. LLEVA LA PROCRASTINACIÓN HASTA EL PuNTO QuE SE DEBEN uSAR TÉRMINOS MÉDICOS Todo el mundo sabe que con el internet es muy fácil encontrarse en un estado de procrastinación hipnotizante. Sea viendo un episodio de “Friends” en YouTube, o simplemente haciendo clic en “Pagina Aleatoria” en Wikipedia con la futil esperanza de encontrar algo remotamente interesante. Todos tenemos nuestros métodos para pretender que el trabajo no existe.

Personalmente, prefiero este método. La página más conocida por ser reina de la procrastinación mundial es por supuesto Facebook. ¡Ah… por supuesto! ¡Pero si es una página excelente para estar en contacto con amigos y familiares! ¡Claro está, es solo un medio de comunicación y no hay forma de que alguna persona se encuentre adicta a la página de una forma enferma y humillante!

Y esta última oración es sarcástica porque: Vea usted, Facebook le provee con una barrita pequeña al principio de la página principal en la cual usted puede escribir como se siente, algún chistecito o cómo estuvo su día. ¡Todo a ningún costo

repercusiones! A menos que… usted no pueda controlarse cuando nadie tuvo el “placer” de comentar en su estatus. Entonces escribe uno nuevo, abusando no solo de su paciencia, sino también del pobre portátil que no puede hacer más que sentarse ahí mientras usted le explica por qué es una porquería.

¡GRABA MALDITA SEA!

El problema es que existen las personas que abusan de esta libertad de expresión como si sus vidas dependieran de ello, como si sus amigos necesitaran saber todo pensamiento que les cruza la cabeza, o como si todo el mundo debiera reconocer su talento como poeta digital. Este desorden, este incesante intento por ser reconocido en el mundo del internet (e igualmente incesante presionar del botón f5 para cargar nuevamente la página) se le conoce como LFT (siglas en ingles) o Baja Tolerancia ante la Frustración. Se le puede diagnosticar en la gente que constantemente proclaman ultimatos como: “Sino termino este ensayo, muero. Muero y me quemo en el infierno.” Estas son personas que afirman no poder soportar casi cualquier situación en su contra y buscan refugio en los comentarios del internet. Es la epítome de la impaciencia. Ojalá, usted lector(a) nunca ha estado en esta situación y a lo mejor nunca lo estará, pero aun así es mejor alejarse de Facebook, ya que…

#5. FACEBOOK HARÁ DE uSTED Su ESCLAVO Para los que no conocen los grupos en Facebook (¿alguien?), son pequeños clubes a los que se pueden unir con el clic de un, pues de un clic. Tienen como objetivo financiar distintas causas y atraer gente. Son grupos como: “Por cada persona que se una a este grupo, donaré un dólar para ayudar a pacientes con cáncer”. Sinceramente, es un intento cariñoso por unir a la gente con la intención de atacar a los problemas más grandes del mundo—un clic a la vez.

Y esta última oración es sarcástica porque: Bueno, es verdad. Algunos grupos sí están ahí para ayudar y unir

gente bajo un solo nombre. Pero por cada grupo dedicado a la comunidad mundial, hay un millón más dedicados a demostrar la incompetencia e idiotez humana. Todo por un chiste. Y usted, querido lector, se unirá a éstos últimos.

Y terminará viéndose así ¿Pero cómo es que Facebook lo hace su esclavo? Cuando usted se une a un grupo, una barra pequeña al lado derecho de su ventana le indica a qué grupo le conviene unirse. Por ser un ignorante compulsivo, usted no tiene la prudencia de parar y pensar cómo es que Facebook logra adivinar sus gustos. También están los grupos que dicen: “Si 100, 000,000 de personas se unen, me (Inserte acción aquí)”. usted puede encontrar el mismo tipo de conducta en YouTube sin necesidad de unirse a un grupo. El creador del grupo no necesita cumplir su promesa, aunque reciba un sinnúmero de ‘toques’ en Facebook.

La amenaza más brutal.

Pero por favor… usted asiste al Colegio Internacional Nido De Águilas. ¡Seguramente usted se da cuenta de lo absurdo que es crear y unirse a estos grupos! Es más ¡usted sabe cómo resolver el problema! ¡usted es el Shakespeare y el Picasso del Internet! usted..! usted… usted intentó…

The 2010 sports season has officially begun!Get ready for a semester of pure adrenalin and excitement as we see our school’s volleyball and soccer high school teams face national and international championships. The kick off began when our boy’s soccer team played a friendly match, sponsored by the Athletic Council—headed by Mr.Connor. There was music, pizza and refreshments and more than 100 people attended! Starting Monday, August 16th, our teams will play host to such schools as Colegio Cumbres, Anglo American, Nuestra Señora de Loreto, Saint George’s College, The Newland School, Compañía de María de Apoquindo, Scoula Italiana, Colegio Everest, Trewhela’s School, Colegio Santa Cruz, Colegio Pucara, and Colegio Santa Rosa. In September, the volleyball teams (boys and girls), will fly to Montevideo, uruguay, to play in the SAAC tournament and in November, NIDO will host the SAAC 2010 soccer tournament. La temporada de deportes del 2010 ha comenzado. ¡Prepárate para un semestre de adrenalina pura! Veremos a nuestros equipos de vóleibol y fútbol competir en torneos nacionales e internacionales. La temporada se inició cuando nuestro equipo de fútbol masculino jugó un amistoso entre las dos divisiones del equipo, con el apoyo del director de atlética Bob Connor. Congratulations to the Model united Nations team for an outstanding performance at the Balboa Academy MuN in Panama City, Panama. Five Nido students acted in the leadership role of committee chairs. New to the Nest: Inception, Movie of the Year What starts at first to be another Hollywood blockbuster of 2010, turns into a jaw-dropping, eye-popping, must-see of the decade. Directed by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, The Prestige) and led by an all-star cast of Leonardo DiCaprio (Shutter Island, Titanic), Joseph Gordon Levitt ([500] Days of Summer), and Ellen Page (Juno), Inception held the top spot at the box office for three weeks. Set in the modern day, this Science Fiction thriller stars DiCaprio as Dom Cobb,

a highly skilled thief in a world where what is stolen are ideas. With his team of thieves, Cobb is assigned the job of planting an idea, or Inception. The movie details the events of this job, using stunning special effects that will have you coming back for more, Nolan uses the viewers’ minds as his playground, making all your beliefs turn into doubts. While viewing this film, the mind finally finds a reason to wander, finally has a reason to doubt, finally has the chance to imagine.

Lo que empieza como otro éxito de taquilla de Hollywood se convierte en una película que te deja boquiabierto y atónito; es la película de esta decada que no puedes dejar de ver. Dirigida por Christopher Nolan y protagonizada por Leonardo DiCaprio, Jospeh G. Levitt y Ellen Page, Inception se mantuvo en el primer lugar del box office durante tres semanas. Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs It’s refreshing to hear an indie band has reached number one on the billboard charts. It doesn’t only mean that great music is selling, but that it is more widely appreciated: a rare gem these days. The Canadian band, composed of seven—I could’ve sworn there were more... their stage is always packed—talented musicians can proudly say that their newest and third studio album reached this sought-after peak only three weeks after its August 2nd release. Here’s the deal: The Suburbs can easily be called a concept album. As its title suggests, the 16 tracks are filled with imagery that looks back on growing up and looks towards growing old in this economy-driven society. Nonetheless, it’s not an album that will wear you down after 3 or 5 songs; it’s an album you can listen to from beginning to end without noticing that 16 songs quickly went by. Some are uplifting, with whimsical piano progressions; others are more somber, focusing on the swift melodies of their two violinists. Nonetheless,

how can a 16-song album come to a full closure? Well, here’s the genius of it all: the album ends with a variation of the

title song, giving the entire experience some sort of fulfillment. The ride from the title-track “The Suburbs” all the way until “The Suburbs (continued)” is amazing. Nevertheless, don’t take my word for it—go listen to it yourself.

de Arcade Fire Es refrescante saber que un grupo “Indie” ha logrado llegar a la cima de la lista Billboard. Esto no solo significa que la buena música se está vendiendo, pero que está siendo apreciada por una audiencia más grande. La banda canadiense, compuesta de siete (hubiera jurado que eran más) músicos talentosos ahora puede orgullosamente decir que su nuevo album, el tercero de su repertorio, ha logrado alcanzar la meta que tantos quieren obtener, a solo tres semanas despues de su lanzamiento, el 2 de agosto. En pocas palabras, The Suburbs (Los suburbios en español), puede fácilmente ser encacillado como un album conceptual. Tal como su título lo sugiere, las 16 canciones están llenas de sentimientos de nostalgia sobre la infancia y el camino a la adultez, un camino forjado por la economía. Sin embargo, este no es un album que se vuelva monótono después de tres o cinco canciones, sino que se puede escuchar en su totalidad sin aburrir al auditor. Algunas canciones son ligeras, enfocadas en las notas del piano, mientras que otras son más sombrías, centrándose en las melodías rápidas de sus dos violinistas.
