Letter of Appreciation for the Flags along Gleneagle

Terry,

Thanks to you and to your great and patriotic SERTOMA Club for placing the flags along

Gleneagle Drive. It was very much appreciated by me during these times where patriotism

seems to be on the back burner. Too many American men and women have given their lives -

we can't let people forget them. God bless you and your family and all the patriotic Americans in

SERTOMA.

Happy Birthday!

Beverly Carlson August 2

Jeannette Bruce August 31

Dear Gleneagle SERTOMA Members,

I was humbled, honored and stunned to be named SERTOMAN of the YEAR for our Gleneagle Club.

Since joining in 1999, I have been happy and proud to serve in many of our Club's capacities.

I also enjoy my “jobs” at Tri-Lakes United Methodist Church and Antelope Trails Elementary School.

I’m blessed with good health, family support, a few funds, and retirement allowing me to volunteer and be a help to my community.

You are all very, very special people in my life and help fulfill it.

If you can figure out how to increase the day beyond 24 hours, I’ll try to do more.

Appreciatively,

Beverly Carlson

Gleneagle Sertoma Club

Sertoman of the Year Award

Presented

To

Beverly Carlson

2015 Introduction

It is with great pleasure that the Gleneagle Sertoma Club presents its Sertoman of the Year

Award for 2015 to Beverly Carlson. Beverly has been a key player and dauntless supporter

of the majority of club activities throughout the years she has been a member. Beverly is

tireless in her low-key behind the scenes support of the Gleneagle Sertoma Club. She truly

epitomizes the true meaning of Sertoma, SERvice TO Mankind. Those who know Beverly

well and are familiar with her background will in no way be surprised by her selection for

this award.

A Dedicated Sertoman

Beverly joined Gleneagle Sertoma Club a few years after she and her husband Ken moved to

Colorado Springs from Chicago in 1996. She immediately became involved in many different

community activities and joined Gleneagle Sertoma in 1999. Since that time, Beverly has

been one of the most reliable “Go To” members of the Club. The size of the project or activity

is not of consequence in her desire to contribute and help at any level when the need arises

or she sees an opportunity to help promote the Club or provide a service to the community.

Beverly has been a major player and the Chairperson and host for the Gleneagle Sertoma

Bed & Breakfast program. This program provides B&B services for visiting Air Force

Academy cadet families during Parent’s Weekend and Graduation activities. In this

capacity she coordinates reservations by matching up host members and visiting families

with accommodations during activities involving cadet families. She keeps current lists of

member Hosts, sends out annual letters to the AFA Parent Clubs (via e-mail), makes

deposits and keeps financial records. Beverly maintains correspondence with visiting

families and many of the Cadet and graduates providing a personal touch to the B&B

program as she acts as a Public Relations person for the AFA Parent Clubs and

ambassador for the Pikes Peak region by providing lots of information on local sites and

activities to the region. She has become a friend to many of the families and is the “go to”

point of contact for many.

In 2014, Beverly received B&B Club recognition award for earning over $10,000.00 for

her hosting efforts. She continues to maintain her dedicated involvement in B&B

activities throughout the year.

For the major Spirits of Spring fundraising event. As an example, four years ago she

volunteered to be “Apprentice Auction Coordinator”. The first year that meant packing

baskets & helping with certificates, graduating to creating baskets second year and doing

even more with the certificates. By the third year she became the principal shopper &

“Certificate Pro” and finally this year she completed her 4 year apprenticeship program by

totally “Owning” the massive job of managing all the certificates, creating and packing

baskets, shopping to fill out just about everything. She is also prime in helping to

transport and set up the auction tables each year, before going to her check-in job up

front. (For those that don’t realize the magnitude of the effort, you are welcome to help

next year.) Bev is now a “Journeyman Auction Coordinator”.

Beverly spends many hours calling and scheduling past participants to donate to the

Gleneagle Sertoma blood drives. Her involvement is a critical link to the success of this

community activity.

She has taken on the additional responsibility to put together all of the gift bags for the

Gleneagle Patriot Golf Tournament making sure that each person and team is properly

supplied for the day on the course and is recognized for their participation in this annual

event. If that is not enough, she also helps with the in processing of every team and

participant.

Community Involvement

Beverly’s involvement in the community reaches far and wide beyond her involvement with

Sertoma activities.

With her background and education with her degrees in education and experience working

with Special Education students, Beverly is a greatly appreciated asset as a teacher’s

assistant volunteer for the past 12 years at Antelope Hill elementary school. In this capacity

she helps with classroom preparation with copying, collating, stapling, filing as well as other

assistance with second grade classes. She keeps all of the student portfolios needed to

maintain materials supporting their International Baccalaureate program. Most

importantly, she works with small groups of students and individuals on everything from

reading comprehension and sight word practice to handwriting and number sense skills.

In order to get to know the children, she photographs each of them holding signs with their

names on them. She keeps this organized so she always knows exactly with whom she is

working. If a child has a parent deployed with the military, she will write to that parent.

Beverly also has a postcard collection that she shares with students who also bring her cards

from their trips. As a former teacher, Beverly has the right skill set to just jump in and start

teaching.

She also volunteers her time every year supporting our Salvation Army Red Kettle bell

ringing at Chapel Hills mall to raise money for one of our club sponsored organizations.

She is an active member of the Tri-Lakes United Methodist church, its choir, the bible study

group in addition, she hosts crocheting parties at her home to make prayer shawls for ill

church members. She bakes and delivers bread to visitors. She has organized women circle

activities for the Surprise Me Circle. You will regularly see her singing in the church choir.

She continues to learn and share her interests in local history with involvement with the

Palmer Lake Historical Society and in that capacity has brought several speakers to the

Gleneagle Sertoma meetings so that we can all learn.

If she isn't supporting a charity with her time, she is giving it her money. Beverly

financially supports scholarships, Alcoholics Anonymous, Autism, Alzheimer's, and various

youth projects.

Beverly’s Background

Beverly was married to her husband Ken for many years before his passing. She has two

sons, Michael and Daniel and four grandchildren who totally respond to the love and shar-

ing of having “Grandma” in their lives.

Beverly is a born and raised native of Chicago before moving to Colorado Springs in 1996.

Many of her friends and family still reside in the Illinois area where she visits frequently.

You know she is from Chicago with the license plate “Chi – Gal”. The only question is: Cubs

or White Sox?

Beverly truly lives a life of service. She is a fantastic role model for us all!

Help Needed with Bed and Breakfast

GLENEAGLE SERTOMA NEEDS SHORT-TERM HOSTS FOR AFA CADETS' FAMILIES Since 1992 many residents in and around the Tri-Lakes and Gleneagle areas have offered their spare bedrooms and baths to Air Force cadet families over Graduation and Parents’ Weekend. Guests/relatives of cadets expect a clean bedroom with fresh linens, scrubbed private bath with soap and towels, and a continental breakfast each morning. No need for pancakes or the bacon and egg routine! Hosts are reimbursed $10.00 per room per night to help defray expenses. Tri-Lakes UMC and Gleneagle SERTOMA Club split the profits. Guests usually stay 2-5 nights. Many very nice friendships have developed from these “stays” and the Air Force families from all over the USA are most appreciative of the hospitality this B & B Program provides. Right now we need rooms for Parents’ Weekend 2015, (Labor Day weekend.) We try to make the best match between the guests' needs and the hosts' accommodations. If you are interested and willing to host for a few nights please email or call me ASAP. If you have questions, I’d be happy to answer them or give you more specifics about the Gleneagle SERTOMA B&B Program. Beverly Carlson 481-5702 P. S. This is NOT a long-term sponsorship of a cadet!

Pointing Out an item of our operations: And I really don’t

have a name for such a section in the newsletter as this……?

I was recently given a list of things/suggestions, from a very observant and dedicated member

of Gleneagle Sertoma. One of those things was to incorporate a short item of information,

training so to speak, from our Club Bylaws and Policies in monthly newsletters and at

meetings. I think that is a good idea from the standpoint of helping review the reasons why

we do some things and as a teaching point that helps prepare members to take a more active

role. So here goes:

This month I will offer a brief explanation of the Bylaws and Policies, the reason for their

existence and how we manage the club under them. Next month I will review the Memorial

Gifts Policy that the Board of Directors worked so hard to craft at the end of last calendar

year.

The Gleneagle Bylaws and Policies in their basic form date back to the original

Constitution and Bylaws our charter members adopted in 1986. They have been revised six

or seven times over the past 28 years but the most significant change came around 2004 -

2006 when Sertoma International, along with other civic service organizations, under strong

influence from the IRS, was “encouraged” to revise their structure to reflect greater oversight

of their chartered clubs and divisions known as districts and regions. During that process,

what had always been known as “The Constitution and Bylaws” became known as the

“Bylaws and Policies” we use today. If you have not checked them out, please go to

www.gleneaglesertoma.org and find them there.

If you run into a roadblock that wants you to enter a password to proceed, it has probably

been too long since you’ve been there. Please call Gloria, Garrett or myself to give you the

password information. It will be easy to remember and is taken from a very popular 70’s era

TV series. Neither the Bylaws nor the Policy Statements take long to read but they are

posted for us all to review and check if we have questions about our operation.

Bylaws are what I would describe as the foundation of the home (our club) with the policies

being the walls that define the layout of the home. It is the policies that really contain the

details that guide our operations. Bylaws are harder to change. Policies can be revised from

time to time as the need arises by the Board of Directors. Any changes to the Bylaws or

Policies does not become effective until approved by Sertoma, Incorporated. The membership

still has the final say in the case of policy changes if something just doesn’t sit well or smell

right. The policies have the details on how to overturn a Board action.

The policies can be a problem if they become outdated and force us to do things contrary to

the way we have found to be easier and more effective. When that occurs, it is time for a

revision. During the coming year, Bob Duckworth will be leading a committee who will look

at changes we should consider in the language of our Bylaws and Policies. If that is

something that interests you, please let Bob and me know.

I hope I didn’t lose you yet so will close on this segment and encourage you to go to the

website and see for yourself. While you are there take a peek at what is coming next month

when I share information about our Memorial Gifts.

Duane Gritzmaker, President
