The most common methods of licensing areelectronic (web/e-mail based) and bycertificate (Certificate of Authenticity). In bothcases, there will be a registered serial number,and a license key made available once a licensehas been purchased - these need to be enteredinto the IMG License Manager to activate avalid license. For further details, refer to theIMG License Manager. There is also USBstorage device licensing, so The Magnifier canbe run from the USB device, simply byinserting the licensed device into any system.
Note: There are numerous licenseschemes (including OEM, site, &enterprise licenses) available to meet theneeds of all our customers. If you haveany licensing questions, please contactInnovation Management Group, Inc.directly.

product is licensed.
To quickly and easily license the software (on asystem that has internet access), simply clickon the "Purchase License Now" button. Onceconnected to IMG’s website, you will be askedto enter billing information and paymentinformation. Once paid, your order will beprocessed, and you will receive a confirmatione-mail and a separate e-mail with licenseinformation. Once the order is fully processed,you can then click the "Retrieve PurchasedLicense" button to automatically license yoursystem.
System ID Note: The System ID is usedto accurately match the Product andVersion you wish to license with theLicense Information provided. If thesystem you wish to License does not haveInternet Access, you can use the CopySystem ID to Clipboard to accurately copy
28

the System ID to the clipboard (which canbe saved in a text file or other documentand moved to a system that does haveInternet Access).
Note: The "Retrieve Purchased License"uses a unique identifier to automaticallylicense your system (which is only sent ifthe "Purchase License Now" is used). Ifyou try this on a different system, or after asystem update or re-install (or after achange to this unique ID), the software willnot license automatically. You will eitherneed to enter the License Key and SerialNumber, or go into Additional LicenseOptions (see below) and use your OrderConfirmation Number and Order E-mail toretrieve the license.
29
Chapter 2. Getting Started
Important Note: Be sure to save and/orprint your Order Confirmation number(with Order E-mail), along with yourLicense Key and Serial Number in caseyou need to re-license the software in thefuture (Operating System Re-install, harddisk reformat, new system, etc.)
Certificate of Authenticity Note: ForElectronic Licenses, and Certificate ofAuthenticity can be retrieved on IMG’swebsite:https://www.imgpresents.com/orders/account/licmanager.htm.This requires a valid License Key andSerial Number. to View and Delete (Reset) the License file;and a mechanism to retrieve a PurchasedLicense by entering the Order ConfirmationNumber and the Order E-mail address.
Often, interested parties want to review or testthe software without the demonstration licenselimitations, and to accommodate this, IMGmakes available Evaluation Licenses. TheseEvaluation Licenses are fully functionallicenses, but with a date limit (when theevaluation date has passed, the software willreturn back to the Unlicensed, Demonstrationmode).
Evaluation Licenses may be requested at theProduct Download pages on the website, or byusing the Request / Retrieve EvaluationLicense button here. Note that all EvaluationLicense requests are reviewed, and EvaluationLicenses must be created by IMG personnel(generation is not automated).
32
Chapter 2. Getting Started
An Evaluation License sent via e-mail containsa block of text that has the license details forthe License Manager. When sent via e-mail,the text can be copied and subsequently pastedinto the text area here (Paste Text fromClipboard), then saved to enable (set) theLicense Information (Save License Info).
Alternatively, if an Evaluation License isRequested, then after processing, it may beautomatically Retrieved directly by clickingthe Request / Retrieve Evaluation Licensebutton. Please refer to any additionalinformation provided by the messages shownwhen using this approach.
The View Current License File(LICENSE.LIC) button will load the fileLICENSE.LIC from the installation folder.This file contains the actual license informationfor the product, or the license information usedto validate a License Key and Serial Number.
33
Chapter 2. Getting Started
Note: Because an Evaluation Licenseuses this same file, the Delete (Reset)option should be used if Licensing theproduct after using an Evaluation License.
The Delete (Reset) License File(LICENSE.LIC) will remove the existingLICENSE.LIC, then copy the fileLICENSE.ORG to LICENSE.LIC (both in theinstallation folder). The file LICENSE.ORG isthe "as shipped" license file, and should be theLicense File when using a License Key andSerial Number to license the software.
Note: For License Purposes, using theSupport Option to Delete (Reset) theLicense File is essentially the same asun-installing, then re-installing thesoftware. Because this option is quickerand simpler, it is the preferred approach to
34
Chapter 2. Getting Started
resolve any license issues. Note thatmanually copying the file LICENSE.ORGto LICENSE.LIC (in the installation folder)performs the same operation as thisoption.
The License Retrieval Option will retrieveLicense Information from IMG’s Website forelectronically purchased licenses. The OrderConfirmation Number and Order E-mail isrequired (which appear on the OrderConfirmation page provided after successfullyplacing an on-line order, and are providedseparately via an Order Confirmation E-mail).
Note: For Retrieved Licenses (via RetrievePurchased License, and via the RetrieveLicense Support Option), License Key andSerial Number information is processedexactly as if this information was directly
35
Chapter 2. Getting Started
entered in the Authentication area.Therefore, all issues that may affectlicensing also apply to these automatedoptions (e.g. License File status, Userpermissions, etc.)
The Magnifier LicenseManager - Licensed Display
36

The Magnifier CommonConfigurations Overview
This section begins by covering basic operationoptions of The Magnifier, and then outlinesbasic configurations and how to configure theproduct (from startup defaults) to get there.
The Magnifier BasicOperation Notes
When running The Magnifier, there are 2 main
53
Chapter 3. Common Configurations
modes of operation - as a window (with up to 7magnifiers running concurrently), or in fullscreen mode. Because of the differences inthese 2 modes of operation, some features arenot available, or do not apply depending on thecurrent mode in use. For detailed information,you can refer to the chapters that cover these 2modes in detail (Windowed and Full Screen).
Whenever The Magnifier is running, there willbe a small magnifying glass icon in the systemtray (next to the clock in the taskbar). You canalways access The Magnifier menu by left orright clicking on this small icon.
When The Magnifier is in the window mode,double-clicking on The Magnifier window willswitch to the Full Screen mode of operation.When the Full Screen mode of operation is inuse, only 1 instance of The Magnifier will berunning. If there is more than one instance ofThe Magnifier running prior to the switch to
54
Chapter 3. Common Configurations
Full Screen mode, all but one will be closedbefore the switch to the Full Screen modeoccurs.
The best way to read using The Magnifier is touse the Arrow keys as panning tools. Forleft-to-right reading material, position yourmouse cursor at the left-most part of the text,then let go of the mouse, and use the Ctrl-RightArrow to pan to the right. Once you reach theend of the page (and need to go back to theleft) let go of the keyboard (this will snap youback to the beginning). When you need to godown, use the Alt-Down Arrow to move themouse cursor down (or simply reposition themouse as appropriate).
Note: Depending on the magnification thatworks best for you, and other applicationsin use, enabling the MouseKeysaccessibility in Windows may be beneficial(MouseKeys allows the Numeric keypad to
55
Chapter 3. Common Configurations
move the mouse cursor). For furtherdetails on MouseKeys, refer to theAccessibility options in Windows (Ease ofAccess in Windows Vista).
By default, The Magnifier tracks the text caret(text cursor), dialogs, and keyboard focus(menus, icons, selections, etc.), along withtracking the mouse cursor. When tracking thekeyboard, the mouse tracking is disabled - tore-enable the mouse tracking, the mouse needsto move away from its current position. Thekeyboard options can be disabled within theAdvanced Menu.
The Magnifier uses a standard menu for allavailable options (with other capabilitiesavailable through keyboard shortcuts). As aspecial feature within The Magnifier, there isalso a Magnifier Menu that uses the entirescreen for its display and uses large type. This
56
Chapter 3. Common Configurations
large type menu has the same options as thestandard menu, but may be preferable to someindividuals. This is selectable in the AdvancedMenu.
The Magnifier’s basic operation isstraightforward, and you can become proficientby reviewing this chapter alone, but there arenumerous enhancements and advanced featuresavailable. Please refer to the followingchapters, Advanced Notes, and the Developer’sKit utilities for even more details on TheMagnifier capabilities.
The Magnifier ToolbarThe Magnifier Toolbar is a simple andstraightforward visual tool bar that allows theuser to perform basic functions, withoutrequiring any additional knowledge of the
57

keyboard shortcuts, or how to access the menu.It is by default On, but can be disabled via theAdvanced Menu.
The Magnifier Toolbar operation just requires amouse click on the buttons displayed toperform the selected function. You can also usethe keyboard to interface with it - use Alt-Tabto select the toolbar, then use the arrow keys toselect buttons. Use the Space Bar to select abutton (Note: [Enter] will not select a button).The buttons will change based on the currentstatus or The Magnifier (to reflect availableoptions). The available options are as follows:

Also notethere is an accessibility feature to controlthe mouse cursor from the Numerickeypad (MouseKeys). Also note that theseAlt keys are not controlled by the KeyboardShortcuts setting in The Magnifier
Note: The Alt-Left Arrow and Alt-RightArrow keys are shortcuts to move Forwardand Backward in popular web browsers,and this will cause conflicts using thesefrom The Magnifier (since the page youare viewing will change).

• Alt-Down Arrow Move Cursor Down(scroll magnification)
• Alt-Left Arrow Move Cursor Left (scrollmagnification)
• Alt-Right Arrow Move Cursor Right (scrollmagnification)

Note 1 (Vista Only): In Windows Vista,Microsoft has created a magnificationinterface that creates a useful mechanismfor doing the screen magnification while inVista. Depending on your systemconfiguration, video adapter, video adapterdriver, monitor resolution, and displaysettings, this magnification may not render.In all cases, it is recommended you update
77
Chapter 3. Common Configurations
your system or drivers to enable Vista towork correctly. When the magnificationsubsystem is not operating in Vista, TheMagnifier’s background window will bevisible, and text will be displayed outliningthe option of using an alternatemagnification scheme (accessible usingAlt-A). This is provided only as analternate, failsafe type magnificationoption for users of The Magnifier. Refer toAdvanced Notes regarding the AlternateMagnification in Vista.
Note 2 - Keyboard Focus & TheMagnifier: Because The Magnifier is auser-interface enhancement, and operatesalongside the user’s normal use of basicprograms and applications, the user willmost often have the keyboard focuseverywhere but The Magnifier. Becausecustomers asked for a way to control &
78
Chapter 3. Common Configurations
modify The Magnifier while working withinWindows, The Magnifier must monitor thekeyboard independently of the normal wayprograms work within Windows (i.e. whereonly the program with keystroke focussees/reacts to the keyboard). This allworks wonderfully, and makes everyonehappy, up until there is a conflict betweena keystroke combination The Magnifierreacts to, and when that particularkeystroke combination is used within theprogram the user is currently working with.In some cases, the problem may only be aminor annoyance - at other times, it maybe a serious impediment. If there is aserious conflict, then selecting one ofalternate shortcut modifiers is the bestoption (and will reduce the possibility of aconflict). You can choose from the Alt key,the Alt+Shift keys, or Control+Shift keymodifiers.
79
Chapter 3. Common Configurations
Note 3 - Operation Notes: When multiplemagnifiers are running, some of thekeyboard shortcuts will affect ALLmagnifiers running. In some cases, usingthe menu options when multiple magnifiersare running may be more effective (e.g.positioning, setting features, etc.).
Note 4 - Advanced Notes: The keyboardshortcuts are implemented in 2 distinctways. 1 approach uses 3 sets of KeyboardAccelerators (for Alt, Alt-Shift, andCtrl-Shift), that are used when TheMagnifier has the keyboard focus. Theother is a keyboard monitoring approach(using the GetAsyncKeyState WindowsAPI) for the combination key and theshortcut key. The sizing options using thearrow keys (and shift-arrow keys) are onlyimplemented as keyboard accelerators(requiring focus to be on The Magnifier).

The following information is for those users
189
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
who are curious and want to know, or wish toUninstall The Magnifier & do not have theoriginal distribution media.
There are 2 approaches to Setup, an IMGinstaller and the Windows Installer (MSI). Thereason 2 installers are available is for flexibilityand support purposes. Installing any product isa relatively easy process, but can becomecomplicated as more & more features andcapabilities are included. In any complicatedsequential process, it is inevitable that somesequence or step is not handled properly. Byusing a second approach, a verifiablecomparison based mechanism is created wherea definitive end-result of files & settings can beattained, ensuring the integrity of theinstallation steps.
Post Installation information:IMGUTIL.EXE performs various postinstallation tasks. For reference, if the
190
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
installation media has LICENSE.LIC in thesame folder as SETUP.EXE, or in the\LICENSE folder, IMGUTIL will copy thisinto the installation folder (this is useful forevaluation and other types of licensing). Ifthe installation media has aDK??????.ZIP file in the same folder asSETUP.EXE, or in the \DEVKIT folder, itwill be copied to the installation folder.
For reference information, you can refer tothe INSTALL.XML used by the IMGSETUP.EXE for all post installationoperations. In Windows Installer (MSI)installs, these same actions occur.
SETUP.EXE will sense if The Magnifier isInstalled or not. If The Magnifier is notinstalled, then Install must be checked to Installthe The Magnifier software. If The Magnifier isalready installed, you may Un-Install byselecting the Un-Install option and selecting
191

OK throughout the following screens.
The Magnifier InitializationFile Documentation(MAGNIFY.INI)
Listed below are settings and information forspecific applications that require specialactions by The Magnifier, along with theConfiguration settings for The Magnifier. TheBrackets [ ] denote the area in theMAGNIFY.INI file corresponding to theinstance of The Magnifier. Internally the countstarts at 0, so the first instance uses the[Settings], the second [Settings1], etc.
192
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
Note: The default setting ofDoNotUseRegistry=0 means TheMagnifier will check the registry for theexistence of the settings. If they are there,then the registry settings are used for thecurrent user (e.g.HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software\Innovation Management Group \TheMagnifier). If the registry settings do notexist, then the settings from MAGNIFY.INIare used as defaults, and when the usercloses The Magnifier, the settings aresaved to the registry. When the settingDoNotUseRegistry=1 is in use, then allsettings will be saved in the MAGNIFY.INIfile (location based on the ConfigPathsetting). When multiple magnifiers are inuse (window mode), the sections are[Settings], [Settings1], [Settings2], etc.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The193
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
DoNotUseRegistry and ConfigPathsettings are always initially read from theMAGNIFY.INI in the installation folder(location of The Magnifier.exe). Only ifDoNotUseRegistry=1 will the ConfigPathbe evaluated to determine where to readthe user’s settings from.
Note: For USB licensing, the settings areConfigPath=0, and DoNotUseRegistry=1.This uses the location on the USB device,and not the registry (so settings arecarried from system to system on the USBdevice).
All Settings are the default Settings of TheMagnifier.
[Settings]
194
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
The following are the default settings for TheMagnifier at Install.
ConfigPath=1
This setting determines where theMAGNIFY.INI file will be located.ConfigPath=0 means the MAGNIFY.INI willbe in the installation folder - there are no peruser configuration files with this setting anduser permissions must allow read-write accessto MAGNIFY.INI, or users must run with afixed (read-only) configuration. WhenConfigPath=1 or ConfigPath=2, each user willhave their own configuration files. IfConfigPath=3, these are in shared among allusers in a public location (this is the preferredsetting if global settings for all users isdesired).
Note: When DoNotUseRegistry=0(default), the ConfigPath setting is not
195
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
used.
Note that the MAGNIFY.INI file in theinstallation folder determines the location ofnew users’ configuration files, and if anadministrator changes this after The Magnifierhas already been used by other users, theirexisting individual configuration files will NOTbe transferred to the new location. What willhappen is the software will be unable to findconfiguration files for the current user in thecurrent specified path, and a copy of thecurrent configuration files will be used as astarting point for this new location.
This is a breakdown by Operating System ofthe specific locations used - [User] indicatesthe actual user logged onto the system, and[ProductDir] indicates the Product’s directoryname, e.g. The Magnifier folder.

If DoNotUseRegistry=0, then the registry isused for each user(HKEY_CURRENT_USER). The location isat [HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software\Innovation Management Group \TheMagnifier \Settings]. If DoNotUseRegistry=1,then the INI file is used (as specified by theConfigPath setting).
TopMost=1
198
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
Window is Always on Top if TopMost=1 TheMagnifier is a normal sizable popup window ifTopMost=0
ForceTopmost=1
ForceTopmost is not available from TheMagnifier menu. The default is 1. IfForceTopmost=1 then The Magnifier willreposition itself above every other Windowevery 50 milliseconds. In 1.50, this wasre-worked to sort windows in a sensiblemanner. Using AutoPosition=1 may be helpfulif you set ForceTopmost=1.
AutoPosition=0
If AutoPosition=1 then The Magnifier willautomatically reposition to the next logicalscreen corner when the mouse cursor is heldover The Magnifier window for severalseconds. AutoPosition=0 disables this action.Screen positions: Top-Left, Top-Right,
199
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
Bottom-Left, Bottom-Right
ShowCursor=1
If ShowCursor=1 then a cursor image will bedisplayed over the magnified screen areawithin The Magnifier window. ShowCursor=0disables the cursor image, and The Magnifieronly displays the screen area.
OpenPositionX=0
OpenPositionY=0
OpenPositionX and OpenPositionY indicatewhere on screen The Magnifier should Open -X & Y indicate Top Left Corner. Default iscenter of screen. 0 indicates use default.Therefore, the window cannot open at position0,0 - use -1,-1 or 1,1
OpenWidth=0
OpenHeight=0
200
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
OpenWidth and OpenHeight indicate size ofwindow. Default window is based on thecurrent screen resolution. 0 indicates usedefault. Do not use values below 10.
TimerInterval=50
The TimerInterval setting is used to set thenumber of milliseconds between eachMagnifier update. This can affect the systemperformance and should be set as slow aspossible while still being useful to the user.Higher values indicate slower updates. Asetting of 1000 means The Magnifier updatesonce every second.
MagnifierMenu=0
This indicates which menu is used. IfMagnifierMenu=1 then the large button / largefont Magnifier Menu is used. IfMagnifierMenu=0 then the windows menu’sare used, and the display settings are controlled
201
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
via the Display Properties | Appearanceoptions.
MagnificationFactor=2
This is the Magnification factor that is usedwithin the Magnifier window to magnify fromthe center of either the current cursor positionor the locked screen position. Valid values are2 through 10.
AllowDrag=1
This is used to track whether the Left Click &Drag is active. If AllowDrag=1 then a LeftDouble Click will open the menu. IfAllowDrag=0 then the drag is not available,and a single Left Click will open the menu.
LockPosition=0
If LockPosition=1 then the Magnifier no longertrack the mouse cursor position, but magnifiesthe screen position indicated by the LockPos
202
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
settings below.
LockPosX=457
LockPosY=180
These indicate the screen position X and Y thatis magnified when the Magnifier is Locked ona position.
TrackCursor=0
This indicates whether the Magnifier istracking the mouse cursor or not. IfTrackCursor=1 then the Magnifier movesalong with the mouse cursor, repositioningautomatically as needed.
TrackPosX=101
TrackPosY=225
These are used internally for the Track CursorOption. They should not be modified.
ShowLines=0
203
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
This setting indicates whether the CursorPosition Indicator Lines are shown. IfShowLines=1 then these 4 lines point towardsthe current position of the mouse cursor.
AnimateLines=1
This setting only applies if ShowLines=1. IfAnimateLines=1 then the Cursor PositionIndicator Lines will animate. This may assistfinding the lines.
LineWidth=1
This setting indicates the line width of theCursor Position Indicator Lines. Valid valuesare 1, 3, or 5.
NoMagWindow=0
If ShowLines=1, and NoMagWindow=1 thenONLY the cursor lines will be shown withoutthe Magnifier window.
LinesTopmost=1204
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
This is an internal setting, and should remainLinesTopmost=1 This is used to keep theCursor Position Indicator lines above otherwindows so they are always visible.
LayeredPct=255
This is the transparency level for the "Layered"window setting It can range from 1-255, with255 being opaque (NOT transparent) At lowerlevels, the windows becomes more & moretransparent Internally, if set at 255,transparency is disabled entirely.
FullScreenPrimary=0
If FullScreenPrimary=1, then the full screenoperation on the primary monitor is enabled. IfFullScreenPrimary=0, then the Magnifier isoperating as a window.
ShowReferenceWindow=1
This only applies when operating in full screen
205
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
mode. If ShowReferenceWindow=1, then areference window showing a representation ofthe area being magnified is shown in the upperright (or toggles to upper left if the mousemoves over the window). The white area isdisplayed on a black background, where thebackground represents the entire screen areathat can be magnified, and the white arearepresents the area that is currently beingmagnified.
FullScreenVirt=0
When FullScreenVirt=1, then the entire virtualarea (multiple monitors) is used in the fullscreen magnfication mode. This can only betrue if the system indicates there is more than 1monitor available and is in use.
TextCaretTracking=1
When TextCaretTracking=1, theMAGLIB.DLL enables a windows
206
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
accessibility event hook and overrides themouse cursor as the magnification point,shifting the magnification point to the textcaret. Wen TextCaretTracking=0, this trackingis disabled.
DialogsAndFocus=1
This is similar in operation to the Text Carettracking, but it monitors the dialog start anddialog end events, along with keyboard focusevents. DialogsAndFocus=1 means the mousecursor location is ignored, and themagnification point is moved to the object infocus. If DialogsAndFocus=0, then thistracking is disabled. This is partially controlledby the FocusWaitTime internally (see below tooverride this).
;FocusWaitTime=500
This entry is an override settings for thelockout period used to prevent conflicts
207
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
between the mouse operation and tracking theDialogsAndFocus events. The time is inmilliseconds and 500 is the internal default.You may notice this if you start using thekeyboard, then use the mouse, and go back tothe keyboard - the wait time period must elapsebefore the keyboard events override the mouse(and the mouse must remain stationary). Youmay wish to make this time shorter for a moreresponsive keyboard, but understand that themouse and keyboard focus events may conflictif this delay is too short.
LensViewMode=0
When LensViewMode=1, (in window mode), acircle region is created so the Magnifierappears as a round lens. This is not available infull screen mode. LensViewMode=0 means thewindow is a normal, sizable window.
InvertColors=0
208
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
InvertColors=1 means the actual screen displayis inverted in the Magnifier display, andInvertColors=0 means it is normal.
AltShortcuts=1
AltShiftShortcuts=0
CtrlShiftShortcuts=0
Only 1 of these can be set to 1, the othersshould be at 0. These determine whichkeystroke combination is required to get at theMagnifier’s shortcuts. By default, it is the Altkey, but this can conflict with someapplications (e.g. Alt-O will open the optionmenu, but will also toggle the Follow cursor(track cursor) mode. If this is problematic, setAltShiftShortcuts=1 to use the Alt-Shift-[Key]combination, or CtrlShiftShortcuts=1 to useCtrl-Shift-[Key].
rgbLines=7346
209
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
This is a decimal representation of the colorsused by the cursor lines using the hexadecimal0x00FFFFFF COLORREF type internally for0x00BBGGRR.
RangeSlider=100
This is used to track the range setting in theMagnification dialog (10x, 20x, 30x, 40x)
MagnVista=20
This records the setting for incrementalmagnification values, e.g. the realmagnification internally is this value dividedby 10, i.e. MagnVista/10 = Magnification.
UseFocusEdge=1
PctFocusEdgeX=8
PctFocusEdgeY=16
If UseFocusEdge=1, then an internalcalculation takes place (based on thePctFocusEdgeX and PctFocusEdgeY values)

that take the current position provided by thesystem for the object in focus (e.g. menu item,icon, dialog control, etc.), and if it is withinthat percentage of the edge of the screen, thenthe edge of the screen is used (rather than theactual position). This helps make thingsvisible, especially at higher magnificationvalues.
If UseFocusEdge=0, then the actual position isused directly, and the PctFocusEdge valuesmean nothing. The PctFocusEdgeX andPctFocusEdgeY values are used internally as apercentage calculation for pixels (based on theprimary monitor resolution). If the positionprovided by the system is within the number ofpixels calculated of the edge, then the edge isused. The best values depend on the monitorresolution, the magnification factor, and usage.The values chosen were based onexperimentation for lower magnification

UseCaretEdge=1
PctCaretEdgeX=8
PctCaretEdgeY=8
If UseCaretEdge=1, then an internalcalculation takes place (based on thePctCaretEdgeX and PctCaretEdgeY values)that take the current position provided by thesystem for the text caret, and if it is within thatpercentage of the edge of the screen, then theedge of the screen is used (rather than theactual position). This helps make thingsvisible, especially at higher magnificationvalues.

The best values depend on the monitorresolution, the magnification factor, and usage.The values chosen were based onexperimentation for lower magnificationfactors.
Alternate Magnification InVista
When running in Windows Vista, Microsofthas a built in magnification interface that isused to magnify the screen display within TheMagnifier, to be compatible with the entireoperating system. In certain instances (lack ofcorrect video driver, insufficient video displayhardware, incorrect display settings, etc.), this
213
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
interface will not operate as intended. TheMagnifier’s window background displays a fewstatements outlining important Vistainformation:
• Magnifying magnifier windows is notpossible in Windows Vista
• If the text is seen with no magnificationdisplay at all, then the magnificationinterface is not currently operable. It isstrongly recommended that you checksettings, update drivers, upgrade yourhardware, etc. to allow Vista to operate asintended.
• You can use the special keyboard shortcutAlt-A to access an Alternate Magnifier.
This outlines what is happening when Alt-A isused within Vista.
214
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
• The Vista compatible version of TheMagnifier is closed (all instances)
• The Windows XP compatible version isstarted. (Named MagnifierXP.exe, locationin the installation folder).
Notes: If you are forced to use the XPcompatible version of The Magnifier inWindows Vista, you will want to select anyother Appearance option other than theWindows Aero display (Personalize |Appearance | View Classic options). Whenoperating with the Aero appearanceselected, you are not able to view"through" The Magnifier window, and fullscreen operation is not usable. You mayalso want to change (or create a newshortcut icon to launch MagnifierXP.exe(rather than the default The Magnifier)Otherwise, anytime you run TheMagnifier.exe, you will need to use Alt-A tostart the alternate program. The license
215
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
remains the same, and the alternatemagnifier should be effective if yoursystem cannot use the Vista approach,and you do not run the Aero appearancesetting.
Application NotesGames using DirectX
Publisher: various
Version: many
By design, these "applications" directly accessthe video hardware, and bypass normalWindows video & screen display approaches.By design, The Magnifier will not work withany non-standard application software that usesthese approaches. The Magnifier is designed to
216
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
work with normal Windows applications thatfollow the rules & guidelines offered byMicrosoft for operation within the normalWindows environment.
Full Screen Video
Publisher: various
Version: many
In general, similar issues to DirectX (above)also apply to full-screen video, where thedisplay is being drawn to directly, bypassingthe application software and preventing the useof The Magnifier. In some cases, the videodisplay may be affected by The Magnifier(especially on Vista/7) (dependent on thecapabilities of the video adapter in the system).You may need to hide (Alt-S), or close TheMagnifier when viewing full-screen video.

About this productThe Magnifier started as a panel on IMG’sMy-T-Mouse®, and by user suggestion, was
219
Chapter 7. Advanced User Notes
spun off as a stand-alone product in 1997. Aninitial round of suggestions and updatesresulted in the 1.20 release in 1998. Over theyears, The Magnifier continued to be indemand, but there were always questions ifThe Magnifier could provide full-screenmagnification. When Windows Vista wasreleased, Microsoft added a a newmagnification API (Application Programming(Programmer’s) Interface), and it was decidedthat a much overdue update was necessary.Using new tools and capabilities withinWindows, The Magnifier was updated utilizingall available options, and full screenmagnification became possible, without havingto resort to complicated driver interfaces. Thisdesign and approach results in a very costeffective implementation that is of great benefitto the majority users that have some need for amagnification utility.
