September means that we get full swing into Sunday School and Bible Classes at Trinity. Confirmation class

begins as well. In the last chapter of Matthew, Jesus said to his followers that they were to go and make disciples

of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit AND teaching

them all of which Jesus taught them. This teaching includes the doctrine of God’s grace.

At the heart of what we believe is the conviction that salvation is the free gift of God's grace (undeserved mercy)

for Christ's sake alone.

"Since the fall of Adam all men who are born according to the course of nature are conceived and born in

sin" (Augsburg Confession II, 1), the Lutherans confessed before Emperor Charles V in Augsburg, Germany, in

1530. This "inborn sickness and hereditary sin" makes it utterly impossible for people to earn forgiveness. If

salvation were dependent on human initiative, there would be no hope for anyone.

But there is great news! God forgives our sins, says Luther in his Large Catechism (1529), "altogether freely, out

of pure grace" (LC III, 96). This is great news because grace is an undeserved, free gift from God.

The basis for the grace of God (that alone gives hope to sinners) is the life, death and resurrection of Jesus

Christ. This is why our church and school ministry is Christo-centric, that is, Christ centered. It is all about

Jesus!

We believe, as Luther put it in his explanation to the second article of the Apostles' Creed, "that Jesus Christ,

true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord, who

has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person . . . not with gold or silver, but with his holy, precious blood

and with his innocent suffering and death. . . ." (Luther's Small Catechism with Explanations, p.14).

We believe that the Scriptures teach that God's grace in Christ Jesus is universal, embracing all people of all

times and all places. There is no sin for which Christ has not died.

Says the Formula of Concord (1577), "We must by all means cling rigidly and firmly to the fact that as the proc-

lamation of repentance extends over all men (Luke 24:47), so also does the promise of the Gospel . . . . Christ has

taken away the sin of the world (John 1:29)" (FC SD XI, 28). Therefore, there need be no question in any sin-

ner's mind whether Christ has died for each and every one of his or her personal sins.

As Jesus followers, let us once again commit ourselves to the learning of our faith and the sharing of our faith.

May God grant us a special ability to love or neighbors and share the hope of our salvation in Jesus. May we

commit to prayer and joyful service as we live in harmony with everyone. May we desire a greater understand-

ing of our God and Lord and may we teach our children to love, honor and follow Jesus as well.

Library News

This month we are featuring four books with less than 170 pages. But those pages are packed with great words that will enlarge your self in various ways.

First is The Case for Hope by Lee Strobel. We live in a world filled with strife and disorder –one that can bring dis-couragement and make our future seem bleak. But when we find hope, we can overcome whatever trouble surrounds us. His words will have you looking ahead with confidence and courage.

Next is Before Amen by Max Lucado. We all pray...some. But wouldn’t we like to pray more? Better? Stronger? We aren’t the first to struggle with prayer. The first followers of Jesus needed prayer guidance, too. In fact, prayer is the on-ly tutorial they ever requested. Jesus gave them a prayer. Not a lecture on prayer. Not the doctrine of prayer. He gave them a quotable repeatable, portable prayer. Couldn’t we use the same? Here we join him as we look at 6 simple lines.

Thirdly –The Gift for All People (Thoughts on God’s great Grace) also by Max Lucado. Wouldn’t we (shouldn’t we) want to enlarge our thoughts and understanding about God’s great gift of grace? Don’t we often take this gift for granted? Here’s an opportunity to read Pastor Lucado’s unique, stirring insights into God’s role as grace-giver.

Fourth selection –Letters from a Pastor’s Heart by Rev. Mat-thew C. Harrison, President of Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. After his personal introduction we have his sermons and writings under various headings. They are: Repentance, Forgiveness, The Bible, The Church, Congregational Life, Witness and Mission, Church and State, Family and Voca-tion, Prayer, Hope and Joy and Resurrection. Every “letter” made me thankful for this leader of our church: his pastoral heart and strong messages for us. (The Lutheran Witness always has one in each issue.) His statement before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Government Over-sight on February 16, 2012 especially struck me for its solid presentation of the position of our church. I believe it takes a special man to do this. Let us thank God for him and pray for him as he continues to lead our church.

Wonderful news!!! We have 35 new students at Trinity Lutheran School! These children will hear the Word of God each and every day that they are with us and they will see examples of Christian faith in our thoughts and actions. We are blessed that the Holy Spirit has worked through us and through their families to bring them to Trinity. Now the work begins! As called servants of the Lord, we, the staff and faculty or Trinity Lutheran School, will work tirelessly to nurture and educate the little souls that are in our care this year. Throughout religious studies, math lessons, prayer time, music and choir, student government, sports and more, we will be very busy this year acting as good stewards of our time, talents and treasures and as good examples of our Lu-theran faith. Please pray for us this year for guidance, wisdom, and patience as we serve all of our school fam-ilies and please pray for our students that God will open their hearts and minds to His Word.

Sending out a big thank you to everyone who helped us spread 75 yards of certified playground mulch on our playground! Randy Ball saved us hours of manual la-bor by helping us spread the mulch with a bobcat. Our trustees helped us get the building ready for the first day of school by fixing things, installing lights, air condi-tioners, etc. They volunteer every weekend to maintain the school and help with special projects. We sincerely appreciate their service and dedication!

Trinity Lutheran School Welcomes Mrs. Becky Hansen to

6th

grade! Mrs. Hansen was installed on Sunday, August 21st

at the 8:30

am service. Mrs. Hansen comes to us from St. Paul, Oak Lawn where she

taught 8th

grade since 2007.

Mrs. Hansen lives in Downers Grove with her husband of three

years, Jason. The Hansens have a Shiba Inu dog named Sheba and a

hedgehog named Bernard which lives in the 6th

grade room.

Mrs. Hansen graduated from Concordia University, River Forest, has 12 years of experience and a Master’s

degree in Reading and Literacy. She also has played on Trinity’s Church Volleyball team for many years.

Please introduce yourself and make her feel welcome.

Summer STEM at Trinity

This summer, anywhere from 5 to 12 students par-

ticipated in 6 sessions of summer STEM. STEM stands for Sci-

ence, Technology, Engineering, and Math. All the students

participated in hands-on activities on topics such as: Aerospace,

Buoyancy, Motion, Speed, Velocity, Architecture, Suspension,

etc.

We had two special guests - - Mr. Keith Wendte and

Mr. Gary Kassen, both engineers at Case-Harvester and both

Church Members. The students loved the engineering experience that both Keith and Gary brought with them to the

class. I thank both Keith and Gary from the bottom of my heart for their extra time given to our students!

Advocate Training for TLC Community Clinic is scheduled for Saturday, September 10 from 9 - 10:30am in the school library. The training is for

new advocates and those who would like a refresher for Clinic 2016. ~ Lori Trinche

The Clinic Staff is in need of volunteers to help set up and tear down. Set-up help is needed on Fri-day, September 23rd from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tear down help is needed on Saturday, September 24th

COATS, COATS AND MORE COATS - Our clinic is fast approaching and we are in need of new or gently used coats for our Clinic on September 24th. We will be handing out free coats to our clinic guests. We need all sizes and shapes, from children to adults. Please no windbreakers, only winter coats. You may drop your coats off at the school during business hours or during church ser-vices on the coat rack marked for such coats. TLC Free Community Clinic

Saturday, September 24th from 9 a.m.to 2 p.m.

at Trinity Lutheran School, 11503 German Church Road, Burr Ridge, IL

Each year Trinity Lutheran Church and School hosts a free community clinic for those in need. Guests have access

to free medical and dental screenings, free flu shots, healing prayer, a free "store" for needed household items, free

winter coats, a hot meal, free haircuts, a free family photo, and much more! One of the most important roles is acting

as an advocate to the guests that are warmly welcomed. We often have over 300 guests, so need lots of helpers!

Those who enjoy visiting with people as well as being a good listener are encouraged to sign up to be an advocate –

no special skills are required, but the volunteer should be able to be on their feet and navigate up and down stairs.

The minimum age requirement is 16.

The guest advocate role is one of a servant – the advocate will attend to every need of their guest(s) during their visit

to our Clinic.

- Greet the guests and assist them with filling out paperwork.

- Help the guest(s) choose the most critical services and help them navigate the layout to ensure their needs are met.

- Make the guest(s) feel welcomed and special –build a relationship with them during the visit.

- Advocates stay with the guest(s) for the duration of the visit – they will make sure to help obtain needed appoint-

ments for medical, dental and spa services, and ensure guest(s) arrive a few minutes early for appointments.

- Enjoy a meal and conversation together.

- Share Christ in a loving way if guest(s) are receptive - encourage them to visit the prayer room and pray with them

if requested, help connect them to pastor if needed.

- Encourage a family photo (many guest(s) have never had one taken).

- Visit the children’s book and craft area for special activities and items they can bring home.

- Make sure guest(s) get needed items from the store and stay with them through the exit process.

Advocates should arrive at the Clinic at 8 a.m. on Saturday, September 24th to register, grab a quick bite to eat, re-

ceive final instructions and for the kickoff prayer! The Clinic is open to guests from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you cannot

serve a full day, consider either a morning only or afternoon only shift.

Sunday School is held in the Trinity School for Three-Year-Olds through Grade 8

A study on the book of Revelation continues at 6:30 p.m. in the church library on Sunday September 18. This study

will be led by Pastor Bob. Check the church calendar for meeting times.

Tuesday Evening

Join us as we continue a study of Ecclesiastes in the school conference room at 7:00 p.m. This class is facilitated by

Rob Grady. We will begin September 6.

Wednesday Morning

Men’s Bible Class meets weekly at 6:30 a.m. in the Church Library. Facilitated by Roy Carr (630-323-3688) we will

continue a study of Hebrews. Start up date is September 14.

Wednesday Morning TLC

TLC Bible Study Group will at 10:30 a.m. on September 14 and 21 in the Church Library. This class is led by Rob

they first found Trin-

ity Burr Ridge be-

cause of its location

and the convenient time for the Saturday service. Cathy also

liked that there was a school, which indicated to them that

this church practices the love of children that Jesus preached

and was where they would baptize Colton. After attending

for over a year and getting to know Pastor Bob they also

joined through adult confirmation and they were officially

received as members this June. They enjoy the music and the

people they have met here, especially wonderful Pastor Bob.

Colton was baptized at Trinity Burr Ridge when he was be-

tween five and six months old. He is now looking forward to

turning three on Thanksgiving this year. He is extremely

bright and his Mother told me he is well on his way to being

totally potty trained before becoming a big brother in Octo-

ber. Colton was so busy happily meeting LCC K9 member

Brutus that he didn't have much to say himself when I tried to

interview him. I was told that he loves their yellow lab,

Chance, as well as all the farm animals his grandma has, even

the fish.

Robert, who also answers to Bob or RJ, loves hockey but

doesn't play it quite so much anymore. He is now less likely

to be chasing around the ice than after his son or working

around their new place in Lemont. They were working to

put in a new floor just an hour before service but it was im-

portant for them to go to Trinity after spending as much time

at his in-laws cabin in MN as they could this summer. He is

also busy serving as a correctional officer at Statesville. He

has been known to enjoy the volleyball court at Trinity with

his wife, Cathy, on Monday nights when they could. Cathy,

in addition to carrying a new child, works as a scientist at Ar-

gonne, a nanny and still as a horse instructor at the family

business. She still had energy somehow to teach her son to

cast and reel already this summer.

This Saturday, August 13th, as a member of our new member committee, I was fi-

nally able to meet six individuals who are now new members. Take a look at the

board in the Narthex and they may already be familiar to you. One of them has

already been attending for almost his entire life, even before he was baptized here at

Mark was raised in Lemont and Kris grew up in Rock-

ford, which made her feel at home at Trinity when Pas-

tor Bob mentioned his hometown in a sermon. (Pastor

said that she could join even though she went to the

“wrong” high school.) They met while attending Drake

University in IA. With his talent for numbers Mark be-

came a CPA specializing in insurance and is self-

employed. Kris became a pharmacist working for more

different large health companies than I was able to note.

Kristin and Mark were married at Christ United Meth-

odist Church Rockford, Illinois in November 1988.

They have been living in their current Lemont home for

twenty one years. They moved the year that Kevin was

born and Kris was able to focus being a homemaker rais-

ing their two sons. With Michael a software engineer

and Kevin returning to U of I Champaign with double

majors of Supply Chain Management and Information

Technology, I'd say she is doing a great job. She has tal-

ents in both knitting and needlework and enjoys reading.

The whole family enjoys vacationing at Green Lake, WI.

Kris and Mark agree that their favorite vacation was HI

where they enjoyed Maui and mostly the big island of

Hawaii. They have a four year old whippet mix named

Tawny who loves running laps in the morning and then

resting the rest of the day.

When asked if they had friends or family that brought

them to Trinity, I was told that they actually found Trin-

ity Burr Ridge through its website, although they have

known the Michaelsens for years. Both boys were fortu-

nate to have Coach Michaelsen for football at Lemont

High School, who took them to State Finals.

Living in Willow Springs for 40 years, Cindy also works

in the same town. She is the Office Manager at Gemcom

Inc. The company makes accessories for fire alarm sys-

tems.

In her free time Cindy does Yoga and walks three miles

each morning before work, meeting her sister along the

way. She also has collected Cinderella memorabilia and

likes doing crafts. Cindy has three sons and four grand-

children. Another grandchild is due in September.

Volleyball Tournament

The Volleyball Tournament is coming! The annual Trinity Volleyball Tourna-

ment is coming Sept. 16-18. This is a great opportunity to get involved over at

the school. Here are some choices:

1. Volunteer your time. Meet some new people and watch some great volley-

ball.

2. Donate to our concession stand.

3. Got a business that needs advertising? Buy advertising space in our tourna-

ment book.

4. Just come and cheer.

How to be Rich By Rev. Mark Bussert, Director of Stewardship

At one of the other churches I serve, they recently used an estate gift to erect a “pole barn”

storage building. But the gift was not large enough to cover the cost of a concrete floor. One

of the men involved in planning the building saw me at the youth rummage sale and said,

“You’re the ‘stewardship guy’ – we need $6000 to put in the floor!” As the ‘stewardship guy,’

I should be able to come up with that, right? What is ‘stewardship,’ anyway, but coming up

with more money? (hint: that’s not what stewardship is!)

I bet you’d like me (or someone) to tell you how to get rich! Isn’t that what this article is about?

No, the title says, “how to be rich.”

This is the theme of this year’s annual Stewardship Emphasis, which begins on September 10/11 and concludes on

October 1/2. It is based on 1 Timothy 6:17-19, a portion of which says “Tell those who are rich in this present

world…to be rich in good deeds.” It is also reminiscent of Jesus’ warning in the “Parable of the Rich Fool” (Luke

12:21), “This is how it will be for anyone who…is not rich toward God.”

How does one be “rich toward God?” What does it mean to be “rich in good deeds?” That is what we will learn – and

strive to put into practice – during this four week series of sermons and Bible studies.

Be present each week! Attend Pastor Bob’s Bible class at 9:45 if at all possible! Learn how to ‘be rich!’

It seems like we were just ending the school year and talking about all of the events on the youth calendar and

now are headed back to school! The youth have had quite a busy summer traveling and serving. We pray for our

youth who are headed back to middle school and high school. We know you will all do great things this year and

make your Trinity family proud! God’s Blessings to our Seniors who graduated and are headed off to different

colleges and universities! We know you will all do great things!

The High School Youth headed to New Orleans for the National Youth Gathering. They had a wonderful trip and

are looking forward to plans for next year’s mission trip! The Junior High Youth headed to this year’s Mission

Trip the week of July 24-29, 2016. This year’s trip was in Kenosha, Wisconsin where they served this community

in various capacities for a Week of Hope. We thank God for each and every youth who attended and who took a

week of their summer vacation to serve those less fortunate. You are all a blessing and we pray that you have

great memories of your week! The 2017 Mission Trips will be as follows: High School Youth will travel to Charles-

ton, West Virginia and our Junior Youth will be heading to Grand Rapids, Michigan!

Our first Open Youth Room will be held on Sunday, September 9th, from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Watch your Youth

Newsletter, the Torch, Fast Direct and the weekly Bulletin Announcements for dates and times. Remember, you

can always bring a friend. The refrigerator is always packed with snacks!

A parent meeting was held on Sunday, August 21st at 7:00 p.m. in the Church Library. We discussed our upcoming

schedule for the year which included fundraising, retreats, events and mission trips. It was an important meet-

ing. If you were unable to attend, we ask that you contact Mr. Grady to get a recap of what was covered.

Plans are being made for our Annual Winter Retreat. You won’t want to miss out on this event! Cost of the event

is TBD….remember to work our fundraising events to offset your trip! Many of the same options will be availa-

ble…ice skating, tobogganing and tubing are some of the many activities we will look at taking advantage of! More

details on this fun weekend will be discussed in the fall at Open Youth Rooms.

Trinity PTL is undergoing a make-over: P.A.W.S. (Parent Association Working

for our School)

When school begins, a ballot will be distributed to vote in a brand new board and

add P.A.W.S. to the name. The volunteers running are Lisa Workman, Gina Tar-

nowski, Angela Tabor, Kristin Stephens, and Pam Winterroth. They are an ener-

getic group with many ideas to make this year memorable, exciting, and different.

We will be hosting our meetings at SCORE athletic facility and hope that an abundant amount of parent volunteers

come and bring their ideas.

Our first event will be the “Back to School” pool party on August 27th

from 5-8pm at Lemont

Park District pool. There is no cost for this event!

Are you tired of being a

couch potato?

Looking for a way to work out at NO COST to you? Come out to volley-ball in the Trinity Lutheran school gym! We meet every Monday, starting September 14th at 7:15 pm and play for approximately an hour and a half. You don't have to be good, just willing to have some fun and per-haps brush up on a few skills. Everyone 18 or older is invited. It's also a great way to help a friend become familiar with our school and church. If you can't come every Monday, just come when you can.
