Entry Requirements: The most common way to enter journalism is to complete a journalism course, then find work as a trainee. Some journalism courses accept five GCSEs, including English and two A levels or equivalent qualifications. Others will expect you to have a degree. If you have a degree, you may be able to do an 18- to 22- week Fast Track NCTJ Diploma in Journalism course.
Work Activities Newspaper journalists or reporters, cover any event of interest to people or specialist readers. This could be anything from reporting on council meetings and school fêtes for a local paper, to general elections and world events for the national press. You could choose to specialise in a specific subject such as sport, politics or entertainment, or work as a critic, for example producing restaurant or theatre reviews.
Newspaper journalists investigate and write up stories for local, regional and national newspapers. If you're interested in current affairs and you'd like a career using your excellent writing skills, this might be a career you’ll enjoy. You’ll need to have an enquiring mind and enjoy researching and investigating your story. You’ll also need to be determined and persistent, to make sure you get all the facts and to see your story published on time. You can get into newspaper journalism by training at college or university, or by joining a local or regional newspaper and training on the job.

Daily Echo
TRAINING OPPORTUNITY
The Southern Daily Echo is launching a fantastic new initiative to give up-and-coming writers a chance to break into the media industry. They have teamed up with journalism training centre Highbury College to run a ‘classroom in the newsroom’ based at their Redbridge headquarters. Starting this September, the 2016 One Year Diploma in Journalism will mix high-quality training alongside extensive work experience at the Southern Daily Echo. Students will learn how to be a working journalist and will leave with all the skills they need to make it on a newspaper, website, TV or radio station. Achieving the diploma can also pave the way for a job in PR, social media, publishing and communications – all without having to pay thousands of pounds in university fees. The diploma covers the essentials of journalism and includes reporting, public affairs, media law, court reporting, video broadcasting, and shorthand. What is required to join the course? You will need at least 5 A-C grades at GCSE including English and ideally you should have also achieved either two A Levels or an equivalent Level 3 qualification such as a BTEC Diploma. What attendance is required? The programme is due to run over 39 weeks, starting in September. You will be based mainly at the Echo offices in Redbridge. Cost and payment? You will usually not be expected to pay a fee if you are:
under 19 at the start of the academic year (as of 31st August)
aged 19–23 at the start of the academic year (as of 31st August) and are unemployed and in receipt of certain government benefits
aged 19–23 at the start of the academic year (as of 31st August) and do not already hold a Full level 3 qualification

Volunteering at Sky Ride Volunteers Wanted For Sky Ride Whether you just have a couple of hours to spare or the whole day, we would welcome your help as a volunteer marshal. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, improve your communication and people skills whilst working as part of an enthusiastic team. Volunteers are vital to ensure the success of our events and we have various events in Southampton, for which we always require the help of volunteers. Previous experience of marshalling at events would be advantageous but not essential. A full briefing is given before the event and you are only allocated tasks you feel you can do. Volunteers usually work in teams and have fun whilst still giving something back to the community; you will not be on your own and may even meet new friends. Due to the nature of the events all applicants must be over the age of 16. Marshal hi viz vests and a limited edition Sky Ride T shirt will be provided for each volunteer as well as a packed lunch on the day. If you are wondering if you can volunteer for just some of the event and also have time to participate in the event, the answer is yes, you can do both! We can allocate you specific time slots to volunteer and then you can still enjoy the event on your bike with friends and family.
