PTA Homework Panel On Tuesday, the PTA hosted a panel discussion with five of our teachers:  Ms. Wessman,Ms. Kath, Mr. Sweeny, Ms. Plana, and Ms. Marek.  Ms. Rowan and Ms. Korbel shared theirideas through Dr. Bussman who moderated the event.  To summarize the discussion, theprimary teachers use homework as both a communication tool as well as a habit-formingtool for our young ones.  The upper grades use homework as continued practice as wellas preparation for the rigor anticipated at the middle school.  All teachers stated that,if the homework is too much or too difficult for the child to complete, to pleasecommunicate with the teacher.  We can make accommodations as needed. The teachers shared several strategies for successful homework completion.   These are:

    1. Set a regular time for homework completion.2. Create a space at home that is used for homework every time.3. If the child refuses or his having difficulty, assess whether the child is tired,

hungry, frustrated about something else, or doesn't know how to do the work. Sometimes, it is ok to set it aside, and let the teacher know it will be completedthe next night.  What is important is that they know they have to complete it.

    4. Give choices in the homework, such as "pick three" of the five to complete.5. Flip the homeowrk time on its head.  Rather than working on it in the evening, try

the morning hours.6. Use a time:  five minutes work and five minutes play until it is completed.7. If nothing else gets done, read every night.  Every child reading every night for

fifteen to twenty to forty minutes will reap rewards in the long run.Subscribe to our email list
