Our congregation received a wonderful 98.3% yeson our voting to carry through with our HCI consultant recommendations. How exciting is that! I am so proud of the work done and the commitment shown this past year as our HCI teams have moved us to this pivotal moment and now we move as a whole congregation into implementation. Not surprising, since how can we do anything without first giving ourselves to One who is able to hold us and steer us in the right direction, our first step is to undergo a season of prayer. And what better time to begin such an undertaking, than during the season of Lent? What we have planned for those six weeks is a church-wide Lenten study. As your pastor I am asking the whole church to read and reflect on the book Talking With God: What to say When You Dont Know How to Pray by Adam Weber. Its a great little book, and yes, its a short book and an easy read! There is even a recommendation in praise of this book written by our own Bishop Bruce R. Ough. It is exciting for me to think about all of us who are a part of Forbes church to be reading the same book together. Learning and discovering more about prayer together and, best of all, growing in our faith together. Every Wednesday evening at 7 pm, following the weeks after the Ash Wednesday service (February 26 th 7 pm), there will be worship and reflection/discussion on the chapters read that week. We invite you to come and participate: reading, listening, sharing, whatever way is comfortable for you. As Adam Weber says: Prayer seems like it should be so simple. Yet when it comes to actually praying, it often feels awkward and complicated. So he asks, What does it look like to pray in the midst of your life? What do you say when you dont know how to pray?Have you ever considered or asked those questions in your own life? If you haveor even if you havent and you consider yourself a veteran prayer warriorcome join us in this time of focus and discovery on prayer. If Wednesday nights are not a good night for you, maybe consider gathering a small group together on another night to reflect on the book and talk about prayer, either at the church or in your home. Whatever you choose, dont be left out of this journey into prayer. A Sunday sermon series to align with this study is also in the planning. Yes, we are on our way! And God goes with us! Talking About Prayer So, we are on our way! Our congregation received a wonderful 98.3% “yes” on our voting to carry through with our HCI consultant recommendations. As your pastor I am asking the whole church to read and reflect on the book Talking With God: What to say When You Don’t Know How to Pray by Adam Weber. It’s a great little book, and yes, it’s a short book and an easy read! There is even a recommendation in praise of this book written by our own Bishop Bruce R. Ough. DIDJA KNOW Our Healthy Church Initiative passed by a 98.3 vote margin. Highest percentage in our conference. Your commitment to the future of our faith community is outstanding. The music program purchased a used Roland Digita Music Piano to enhance our youth music and worship service. Thank you to Lindsey, R. and the Finance Team. Finance, leadership, administration minutes and trustee information is posted on the bulletin board just outside the Fellowship Room door in the narthex. a daily devotional is a trusted guide, and it is an invitation to nurture your spiritual life. Devotionals include a Bible verse, a reflection on that verse, and usually a short prayer. They can be inspiring, comforting or even humorous. When you make time to read a daily devotion, you make space for your soul. A daily devotional offers a chance to take a break from the busy world and connect with God. Let your daily devotions lead your spiritual life forward. Our Healthy Church Initiative (HCI) consultant team has requested our council members read the book entitled “Simple Church”. If you have the time, we encourage you to read this book also. Copies are being passed around for reading. Clarity>Movement>Alignment>Focus Remember the “United Methodist Mission”. Monthly envelopes are provided to remind us of our support of this mission. Also giving boxes and financial statements are available in the narthex.

If you have a question, send it to the church office marked, “DIDJA KNOW”, and we will try to answer.

Finance Team ~ Starting a New Year We started a new year, now we can take an opportunity to look back at last year and see what we want for 2020. In 2019 there was a vote to dismiss the Finance Committee. After a few months, the realization came that a Finance Committee is needed. The reconstituted Finance Committee transformed into a Finance Team. We are a team of committed members who bring individual skill sets to church finances. Last November we had a deficit of $20,000. By the end of 2019 we climbed out of the negative side to a slight surplus. The Finance Team extends a great big THANK YOU for your financial giving that resulted in removing the deficit. How will we do in 2020 – we think we’ll be fine. By the way in November the Finance Team initiated some new programs. More to come on these in future months. The team includes Chuck Froseth (Chair), Nancy Kalland (Vice-Chair), Crystal Bushnell (Secretary) Troy Bobbitt, Walt Kephart, Pastor Karen Ashton, Brent Wetzel, Gene Becker, Rory Johnson, Donna Froseth, Hart Zielger, Denise McDougall, and Laura Condon. As you can see these folks represent different church committees, boards or positions. As a result creative thinking and discussion takes place. The Team meets the second Monday of the month with meeting start time of 6:00 pm. All meetings have a standing invite to the entire congregation. Well, there you go. That was a brief update with more exciting information to follow over the year 2020.

Implementation Meeting for HCI with Coach Jim Haun Tuesday, February 18, 2020 6:30 pm, Forbes UMC Basement

The vote is in and with a 98.3% "yes" vote on Sunday January 12, 2020, the Five Healthy Church Initiative Strategic Recommendations were accepted by 70% of the Forbes' members in attendance. We now move into the Implementation Phase of HCI.

Pastor Karen has been in contact with our HCI Coach, Jim Haun, and the first Implementation Workshop is set for Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at 6:30 pm in the Church Basement. Plan to attend and encourage other members to join in. We are looking for a cross-section of members to join the Implementation Team, but it is very important that we include our younger members so that we can incorporate their needs into our plan for the future of Forbes. Those of you that were on Teams 1 and 2 for Phase 1 of the HCI process, are encouraged to get on board if you want to continue with the Implementation Process.

In short, everyone is invited to join the process and to be amazing in the Implementation of God's Plan for Forbes UMC.

See you Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at 6:30 pm as we listen to Jim Haun lead us into Phase 2 of this HCI process. God Bless each and every one of you.

Pray for our congregation and ask God to lead us into service to those in need.

Please let Crystal Bushnell, Church Secretary know if you will need childcare. Contact Pastor Karen or Donna Froseth 218-260-6833 or [email protected] if you have any questions regarding this event.

Prepare your mind and soul for success by reading the book Talking with God: What to say When You Don't Know How to Pray by Adam Weber, in preparation for a congregation wide book study on prayer during the Lenten Season. Thank you for listening - You are loved.

Beginning of Year Update ~ Trustees ~ January 2020

Meeting dates and times for 2020, is the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm? This could change depending on circumstances.

For 2020 the Trustee membership includes

Chuck Froseth, Chair Gene Becker, Treasurer Connie Stanley, Vice Chair

Tami Allen, Secretary Gary Lorenz Wallace Fontaine

Have started the “Good Shepard Program”. Each Trustee is assigned a month and for each week during that month they do a walk through as a Good Shepard would do to care for their sheep. Only for the Trustee our care is not sheep - but the church. The purpose is to monitor for problems within the physical facility and grounds.

The Special Projects List is updated, and posted. It is possible that some projects may be addressed sooner (if necessary). Below is a summary.

High Priority – HCI recommendations, update corner signage and sidewalk replacement.

Medium Priority – replace organ and create Agape brochure.

Low Priority – convert library to office space, security system, replace pew pads, upgrade flat roof on south side, and redo landscaping on south side.

The Trustee Work Plan for 2020 has not been updated. We are waiting for Congregation action on HCI. Workday is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, June 2. Trustee members have been asked to visit other churches to see if we can adopt new ideas for Forbes

In closing, the Trustees take their job seriously and want church members to know we appreciate their support.
