    HEAVY TANKS

    M26 Pershing

The M26 Pershing Heavy Tank was introduced after long production delays in mid-1945. Initially unreliable and prone tomechanical faults, continued combat operations have led to several improvements and has made the tank a staple of the USArmoured Regiments. With a tank comparable to the German Panther, parity has been restored on the European battlefield.

    MEDIUM TANKS

    M4A3 Sherman (76mm)

Although the Sherman is now largely obsolete, thousands remain in serviceable condition and are used within infantry battlegroupsfor anti-tank support. The 76mm gun is a workable anti-tank solution, if more firepower is required the GIs can call on the ArmouredRegiments Pershing heavy tanks.

    M4A9 Sherman-T

As an easy platform to modify, the Sherman formed the test bed for much of the new weaponry deriving from the rift technologies(RiftTech). The first successful new weapon derived from the new RiftTech was an electrical cannon powered from the vehiclesenhance electro-diesel powerpack. The weapon provides a mid to short range, flexible capability and is a popular weapon with theinfantry it supports.

    LIGHT TANKS

    M5A1 Stuart

Used in the recce role and for infantry fire support as their main cannon could not compete with heavier enemyarmoured fighting vehicles. However, the Stuart was still effective in combat in the Pacific Theatre, as Japanese andChinese tanks were both relatively rare and were lighter in armour than even Allied light tanks

    M10 Wolverine Tank Destroyer

Not really a light tank as a fast anti-tank vehicle. US doctrine saw heavily gunned but agile AFVs hunt down enemy tanks withoutgetting into protracted exchanges. The doctrine worked well on occasions but the vehicles were vulnerable when surprised or outmanoeuvred themselves. The M10 was built from a Sherman hull and has largely been replaced by either the 76mm Sherman orthe M18 Hellcat.

    M18 Hellcat Tank Destroyer

The Hellcat was a purpose built Tank Destroyer capable of high speeds. It carried an effective main gun but still proved vulnerablewhen under fire. Tank Destroyer doctrine has all but disappeared from US manuals, the M26 proving capable of fulfilling the rolesof most of its predecessors.

    M8 GRIZZLY Assault Mech

The first truly practical mech designed using rift technologies; the Grizzly is the watchword for rugged and practical. Armed with thedated but proven 75mm gun and a .50 HMG, the Grizzly is versatile and adaptable. More useful are perhaps the powerful arms thatcan smash tanks and clear obstacles. The Grizzly is being eclipsed by newer designs, but remains a true workhorse.

The heavyrockets pack a punch that can kill tank crews even ifthey dont penetrate the armour. As the US deployed more and more mechs into urban or close quarter battle situations, it found a need for rapid firing lightweapons rather than a more conventional 75mm gun. The result was the KODIAK, designed to hose down enemy formations orprovide close anti-aircraft support as required..

    HEAVY TANKS

    TIGER II (KONIGSTIGER)

The Tiger II was designed to be the ultimate heavy tank and a game-changer on the battlefield. It is impressive but poor reliabilityand an underpowered engine have plagued its use in battle. Despite improvements, the tank is expensive to produce and anincreased reliance on the more numerous Panther tanks and the heavy Zeus walkers has been the inevitable result.

Although the Tiger has been in combat for over seven years, it still has an impact on any battle it is involved in. Truly tough, wellarmed and well crewed, a Tiger can wreck Allied armour at range. The build costs still remain high and limit the number of Tigersavailable in any theatre.

After initial build and mechanical issues, the Panther has matured into a truly impressive war machine. With a low calibre but highvelocity gun, it can penetrate armour at range and is well armoured enough to withstand a significant amount of return fire.Relatively easy to manufacture it is now the most common German tank on the battlefield.

As a sister design to the Thor, the Wehrmacht sought to develop a tank-killing variant of the walker, combining the AT capability of

As the German army developed its heavy infantry tactics, they identified the need for a fire support platform that could handle the

terrain like infantry but was resilient enough to withstand enemy small arms and light weapons. The result was the Spider or

Spinne. Reasonably armoured, but open turreted for visibility, the Spinnes autocannons lend the heavy infantry it supports the

necessary firepower. The success of the Spinne has also seen it adopted in the recce role, replacing less agile armoured cars and
