The Wake Forest University Mace The Wake Forest University mace was given in 1967 by Tom Davis of Winston-Salem in honor

of his father, Egbert Lawrence Davis, LL.B. '04 It is constructed of spun silver, covered with gold, and has an ebony handle, emphasizing the University colors of "old gold and black." It is topped by the seal of Wake Forest University, double cast, and has three spheres depicting the old campus in Wake Forest, North Carolina (the original Wait Hall, Lea Laboratory, the Old Well, and President Samuel Wait); the Reynolda campus in Winston-Salem (Wait Chapel, Reynolda Hall, the Z. Smith Reynolds Library, and an arch at the campus plaza); the professional schools of law and medicine; and the city of Winston-Salem.

Academic Heraldry The traditional academic costumes being worn today are a heritage of medieval practices that were

systematized for American colleges and universities in 1895. These early agreements have subsequently been revised and amended periodically to cover standardization of the cap (the black Oxford or mortar board style with tassel), the gown (three basic styles), and the hood (subject to greater variation than either the cap or gown).

Gowns, which according to the code are all black (Harvard, Princeton, and Yale are exceptions), are of three kinds. The bachelor's gown (the term bachelor was used in medieval times to designate an assistant to a landowner) is a comparatively simple kind that falls in straight lines from an elaborate yoke. The master's gown is similar to the bachelor's except for its peculiar arrangement of the long sleeves which terminate in square ends at the wearer's knees; the wearer's arms emerge through slits in the sleeves made at the elbows. The doctor's gown is an elaborate, full-cut, flowing costume distin­guished by velvet panels down the front and around the neck and by three bars of velvet on the bell­shaped sleeves.

Candidates for, and holders of the master's and doctor's degrees will be wearing hoods over their robes. The hood traditionally bears the heaviest symbolic burden. The hood makes clear the level of the degree, the faculty (i.e., the major field of learning in which it was given), and the institution which awarded it. The level of the degree is indicated by the length of the hood, the master's and doctor's hoods being three and one-half feet and four feet long respectively, and the corresponding velvet trimming of three and five inches respectively that extends all around the exposed edge. The color of the trim­ming identifies the major field of learning: white for Arts and Letters, copper for Economics, light blue for Education, brown for Fine Arts, crimson for Journalism, purple for Law, green for Medicine, pink for Music, silver-gray for Speech, dark blue for Philosophy, sage green for Physical Education, golden yellow for Science, cream for Social Science, and scarlet for Theology.

The university awarding the degree is identified by the colors that line the hood. Although some universities have duplicated colors, generally a glance at the lining, which is worn exposed, will identify the awarding institution. Some of the university colors being worn today are:
