The calendar year 2014 sales result represented a 6.7 per cent increase over the 2013 sales figure of 87,049 and was just short of the record set in 2007. "TREB's 2014 sales figures are a testament to the importance Greater Toronto Area households continue to place on home ownership. GTA households realize that home purchases have been a quality long-term investment. While home prices certainly increased substantially in 2014, the purchase of an average priced home remained affordable, in terms of the average household's ability to comfortably cover their monthly mortgage payments," said Etherington. The average selling price continued to grow on a year-over-year basis in calendar year 2014, with an 8.4 per cent increase over calendar year 2013 to $566,726. This included a seven per cent increase in the December 2014 average selling price to $556,602. Throughout 2014, annual increases in the average selling price and the MLS® HPI Composite Benchmark were con- sistently reported on a monthly basis for most market segments, from de- tached homes through to condominium apartments. "The strong price growth we experienced in 2014 can be explained with two words: listings shortage. The constrained supply of listings was especially evident for low-rise home types like singles, semis and town houses. The number of households look- ing to purchase these home types increased, while the number of homes from which they could choose decreased. This situation resulted in more competition between buyers and more aggressive offers," said Jason Mer- cer, Treb's Director of Market Analysis. * All-new Ford GT supercar sets new standards for Ford innovation through performance with advances in light-weighting, aerodynam- ics and ultra-efficient EcoBoost® engine * Ford GT features the most powerful EcoBoost production engine ever - a new twin-turbocharged Ford EcoBoost V6 producing more than 600 horsepower * Ultra-high-performance supercar is Ford's most extreme offering, infused with race-proven technology engineered to keep company with exotics when it goes into production in 2016 Ford has unveiled the all-new GT, an ultra-high-performance supercar that serves as a technology showcase for top EcoBoost® perfor- mance, aerodynamics and lightweight carbon fiber construction. We eat mostly lean protein and fresh fruit andvegetables, nothing processed or from a box, if we can.* Jennifer Lawrence: I'm miserable when I'm dieting and I likethe way I look. I'm really sick of all these actresses lookinglike birds...I'd rather look a little chubby on camera and looklike a person in real life, than look great on screen and looklike a scarecrow in real life.* Gwyneth Paltrow: It is easy to get distracted by junk foodwhen you are hungry, so keep healthy snacks to hand. On aSunday prepare a batch of salad dressings and store them inthe fridge for the rest of the week. They make a quick and easygo-to for dipping vegetables or for drizzling over chicken. Also, keep your cupboards well stocked with fresh basics to stayinspired to eat healthily.* Tyra Banks: My nutritionist says, 'If you bite it, write it.'Writing down everything that you put in your mouth really helps.AISHWARYA RAI UNVEILS NEW RED

COCOA-RICH DIETS COULDIMPROVE MEMORYLondon (IANS): Diets rich in cocoa flavanols - bioactives foundnaturally in cocoa - can help arrest age-related memory de-cline in healthy adults, a study shows."The results of this study are encouraging - they suppor t theidea that diet, and specifically a diet rich in cocoa flavanols, can playan important role in maintaining cognitive health as we age," said leadauthor Giovambattista Desideri from the University of L'Aquila in Italy. The study involved men and women aged 61-85 years. They wereassigned to one of three flavanol groups, consuming a drink contain-ing either high (993 mg), intermediate (520 mg) or low (48 mg) amountsof cocoa flavanols every day for eight weeks.Among those individuals who regularly consumed either the high- orintermediate-flavanol drinks, there were significant improvements inoverall cognitive function after eight weeks. As cognitive function wasnormal for this aged population, the study showed that even cognitivelyhealthy individuals can quickly benefit from the regular inclusion ofcocoa flavanols in their diets. The researchers earlier found cognitive and cardio-metabolic ben-efits of habitual cocoa flavanol consumption in older adults who hadbeen diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The new re-search trial was carried out with a special cocoa flavanol test product, designed to deliver a standardised amount of flavanols within a nutri-tionally suitable drink. This test product is currently not commerciallyavailable.

HOW DEPRESSION

HAMPERS MEMORY

l ifestyle

New York (IANS): The ability to remember information declines whenpeople are in depressive mood, new research shows.Although repor ted widely, this link between depressed mood andmemory deficit was not observed in a laboratory setting earlier, theresearchers pointed out. The new study found that individuals withdepressed mood show as much as a 12 percent reduction in memorycompared to individuals without depressed mood."When depressive thoughts are present, people with depressed moodare unable to remove their attention from this information, leading todeficits in their memory," explained the study's lead author NicholasHubbard from University of Texas at Dallas. The study included 157undergraduate students. Of them, 60 par ticipants were classified ashaving depressed mood and 97 as having non-depressed mood.Par ticipants with and without depressed mood were asked to re-spond 'True' or 'False' to a sentence featuring either depressivethoughts (e.g., "I am sad," "People don't like me") or neutral informa-tion (e.g. "Most people agree that Monday is the worst day of theweek"), and then remember a string of numbers at the end. Peoplewith depressed mood forgot more numbers than people without de-pressed mood when they responded to the sentence featuring nega-tive information, but remembered just as many numbers when theyresponded to neutral information. The study appeared online in the journal Cognition and Emotion.

High BP ups glaucoma riskMelbourne (IANS): Chronic or long-term hypertensionincreases a person's susceptibility to glaucoma, a leadingcause of blindness in the world, new research showsGlaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness in theworld, is a condition that occurs when too much pressurebuilds up inside the eye. This excess pressure pushes backthe blood trying to enter the eye resulting in vision loss."It seems that hyper tension might damage the blood vesselsin the eye so that they cannot compensate for changes inblood flow when eye pressure increases," said author BangBui from the University of Melbourne in Australia. Previously,it was thought that high blood pressure could counteract thehigh eye pressure that leads to glaucoma. This theory was supported by past research that had shownraising blood pressure for a shor t period of time (one hour)offered some protection against elevated eye pressure, ashigh blood pressure ensured that blood continued to enter theeye. The authors tested this hypothesis by comparing theeffect of acute (one hour) and chronic (four week) hyper ten-sion in lab rats with elevated eye pressure."When we raised blood pressure... for four weeks, we did notget the same protection against eye pressure elevation as inthe (one hour) case," Bui added. "What this means is thathaving high blood pressure for a longer time has compro-mised the eye's capacity to cope with high eye pressure."Instead of viewing hyper tension as beneficial in the fightagainst the disorder, Bui suggested, it should be identified asa risk factor. The study appeared in the journal InvestigativeOphthalmology & Visual Science (IOVS).

Table sugar less toxicthan fructoseNew York (IANS): All "added sugar" found typically in processed foodsare bad but among them the fructose found in corn syrup may harmyou more than table sugar, new research has found."This is the most robust study showing there is a difference betweenhigh-fructose corn syrup and table sugar at human-relevant doses,"said senior author of a new study Wayne Potts, professor at Universityof Utah in the US. When the researchers fed mice sugar in dosesproportional to what many people eat, the fructose-glucose mixturefound in high-fructose corn syrup was more toxic than sucrose or tablesugar, reducing both the reproduction and lifespan of female rodents, the findings showed."Our previous work and plenty of other studies have shown that addedsugar in general is bad for your health," said first author James Rufffrom University of Utah. "So first, reduce added sugar across the board. Then worry about the type of sugar, and decrease consumption ofproducts with high-fructose corn syrup," Ruff added. Both high-fructose corn syrup found in many processed foodsand table sugar found in baked goods contain roughly equalamounts of fructose and glucose. But in corn syrup, they areseparate molecules, called monosaccharides. In contrast, su-crose or table sugar is a disaccharide compound formed whenfructose and glucose bond chemically.

BIRTH CONTROL SHOT LINKED TOINCREASED RISK OF HIV INFECTIONNew York (IANS): Using an injectable bir th control method may increase the risk of HIV infection in women, a large meta-analysis of 12studies in sub-Saharan Africa shows. The hormonal contraceptive, depot medroxyprogesterone acetate, is sold under the brand name Depo-Provera and is administered as ashot every three months."The results have potentially broad implications because hormonal contraceptives remain popular for women worldwide," said studylead author Lauren Ralph from University of California, Berkeley. The findings included data from 39,500 women. The researchers selected the studies based upon methodological rigor, such as whetherthey accounted for the use of condoms. In addition to Depo-Provera, the studies also examined other commonly prescribed forms of hormonal contraception. The other bir th control methods did not appear to increase HIV infection risk for women in the general population, the researchers noted. The study found that women who used depot medroxyprogesterone acetate had a moderate, 40 percent increased risk of acquiring HIVcompared with women using non-hormonal methods and those not practicing bir th control. The study found that women who used depot medroxyprogesterone acetate had a moderate, 40 percent increased risk of acquiring HIVcompared with women using non-hormonal methods and those not practicing bir th control. The increased risk was slightly lower, 31 percent, among the studies done in women in the general population. It remains unclear why the increased risk was seen among those using Depo-Provera but not the other forms of hormonal contraception, the authors noted. One possibility may be that bir th control with higher levels of progestin, the synthetic form of the natural hormoneprogesterone, changed the vaginal lining or altered local immunity, increasing the risk for HIV infection, they added.

SIX LIFESTYLE CHOICES CAN HELP WOMEN SAVE HEARTSWashington (IANS): Three-quar ters of hear t attacks in young women could be prevented if they closely followed six healthy lifestylepractices, researchers have found.Healthy habits were defined as not smoking, a normal body mass index, physical activity of at least two and half hours per week, watching seven or fewer hours of television a week, consumption of a maximum of one alcoholic drink per day on an average, and ahealthy diet."We wanted to find out what propor tion of hear t disease cases could be attributed to unhealthy habits," said lead author AndreaChomistek, researcher at Indiana University School of Public Health, Bloomington. For the study, the researchers followed nearly 70,000 women for two decades.During 20 years of follow-up, 456 women had hear t attacks and 31,691 women were diagnosed with one or more cardiovascular diseaserisk factors, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or high levels of blood cholesterol. The researchers found that women who adhered to all six healthy lifestyle practices had a 92 percent lower risk of heart attack and a 66percent lower risk of developing a risk factor for heart disease. This lower risk would mean three quar ters of hear t attacks and nearly half of all risk factors in younger women may have been preventedif all of the women had adhered to all six healthy lifestyle factors, the authors said. The findings appeared in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
