Sustainability supportslong-term growthFord Motor Companys annual sustainability report for 2011 was published recently, providing

an insight into how the company is reducing the environmental impact of its products and

facilities, supporting positive social change and ensuring economic viability for long-term

growth. This months cover story looks at the objectives and achievements of Ford of Europe

    Climate change, environment and water

Ford is committed to doing its share to prevent or reduce the poten-tial or environmental, economic and social harm due to climatechange.

It has a science-based strategy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG)emissions rom its products and processes that ocuses on doing itsshare to stabilise carbon dioxide (CO) concentrations in the atmos-phere. It has also made a commitment to deliver the most uel-ef-cient vehicles in every market in which it participates.

Ford o Europe continues to take signifcant strides in its target toreduce CO emissions o all its vehicles. By 2010, Ford had alreadyreached an average CO emission level below 137g/km, with 65 percent o Ford vehicles recording an average o around 121g/km, some5g/km better than the target requested by the European legislationor 2012.

Since the last sustainability report, Ford o Europe has consistently

pushed the low CO agenda, introducing new models, like the 87g/km Fiesta ECOnetic Technology and the 109g/km Focus 1.0EcoBoost.

    EcoBoost engines and ECOnetic Technology

This year saw the introduction o the 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engineinto Fords range, joining the 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre EcoBoost units.

EcoBoost petrol engines use turbocharging and direct injectiontechnology to produce levels o perormance that are usually associ-ated with larger capacity engines. The 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, orexample, oers power levels o traditional 1.6-litre petrol engines, butwith CO levels as low as 109g/km.

    Interview

BiographyBarry Gale is chief engineer, commercial

vehicles, Ford of Europe, with overall respon-

sibility for the engineering development of

Fords Transit, Transit Custom, and Transit

Connect product lines. Located in Dunton,

UK and Kocaeli, Turkey, he was appointed to

    this position in 2006.

Gale has extensive experience in leading the

development of Fords commercial vehicleproducts, and prior to his current role he was

    chief program engineer, Transit programs

from 1999 to 2006, based in Dearborn, USA,

Dunton and Kocaeli. Before this, he was

project manager for Transit in Dearborn and

Genk, Belgium between 1997 and 1999.

Gales Ford career began in 1982 within the

    European powertrain group.

Absolutely antastic. Birmingham was a one van show and we had byar the most important vehicle there. Since the show, weve had lot ointerest rom customers who tell us it is a great-looking vehicle butalso one that is very unctional. Transit has always appealed to eetoperators, o course, now with Transit Custom we are also appealingto owner-operator customers, people who buy their own vehicle andtake it home at night. They need a van or their business, but wantone that has style as well as load-carrying capability. The TransitCustom gives us a tremendous opportunity to appeal to suchcustomers.

Js ow moa ae ese ew Vs o Fo?We have always had strength around the world in commercialvehicles, with Transit very strong in Europe and APA markets. Wehave been the top seller in many o those markets or more than 40years, so, obviously, the commercial vehicle business is very impor-tant to Ford. These new vehicles will continue our growth in salesand reinorce our leading position.

Wa was e gges caege o face we esgg

    a eveog ese moes?

Our target was to produce a vehicle that was great-looking but withall the unctionality or which Transit is amous. Transit Customsucceeds by looking smaller rom the outside while having impres-sive interior space. Earlier in the development process, the questionwas asked was do we want a unctional vehicle or a stylish vehicle?.

The answer was that we wanted both, because that is what custom-ers want. Designers and engineers worked very closely to achievethat objective.

how mc of a moveme ove e ce age s e

    ew tas som?

For ride, handling and brakes, the Transit Custom represents astep change. It is similar to what we did some years ago whenwe replaced the Escort with the Focus, the dierence is that great. The current Transit is already recognised as one o the best-handlingvehicles on the market, but when a customer drives the new TransitCustom the dierence will be very noticeable. Additionally, themodels styling, perormance and car-like interior encouraged usto develop a Tourneo bus version.

It will be best-in-class in the commercial vehicle segment in all othose areas. We have put a lot o attention into saety and NCAPratings; there is innovative smart technology with SYNC; quality andreliability are always a top priority; and in terms o green, we haveexceptional CO2 fgures, best-in-class, in act.

    ?

Input rom customers is always very important. One o the strengthso the Transit team in Dunton is that it has extensive experience andcontact with customers. We get eedback rom customers driving

current models and new products. They tell us about vehicle reliabili-ty and ease o use. Obviously, we do a great deal o market researchand we listen careully to what customers tell us, both about theeatures on the vehicles they are driving and the eatures that theywould like to see incorporated. With the Transit Custom we did armore research than we have done beore, ocussing particularly onstyling and unctionality. The sort o questions we asked were: whatdo you do with your vehicle every day?, what do you carry in theront, and in the back?, what technology do you have?, and so on.We listen and respond. Just one example: we now oer drivers theability to recharge their mobile phone out o sight.

how as Oe Fo mace e comas V

    ogammes?

The Dunton-based commercial vehicle team has always had an

international outlook, working with colleagues around the world.Similarly, the Transit has always been a great example o how Fordworks around the world. As we roll-out our ull CV range, there willbe signifcant opportunities. It has already been announced, orexample, that our new, big Transit will replace the E-series in NorthAmerica.

    Fa, ow o o a o eam Go Fe?

Fresh in my mind is the past six months, when many in our teamhave been going urther both in terms o travel and commitment;leaving their amilies and travelling to Kocaeli in Turkey every week. The team has also worked hard on developing team spirit withcolleagues in Turkey.

    On the pace

Its been a tough rst half of the season for the Ford World Rally Team, but the Fiesta RS WRC

has shown it can more than match its rivals for pace. Here @Fordexamines some revealing

statistics from the opening six rounds of the 2012 FIA World Rally Championship

ford ord a team duo eer

oberg ad Jari-Mai lavaa haveendured some rotten luck this season.Consistently quick on all suraces, theyve

led every event they contested in theirFiesta RS WRCs, but victories have provedrustratingly elusive.

A series o punctures, the occasionaldriver error, and even a reak skiing accidenthave cost the team dear. However, Fordrally ans can take heart rom the act thatthe Fiesta RS WRC is a seriously quick car.In act, an analysis o results over the frstsix rounds o the championship shows thatthe Fiesta RS WRC set astest times on71 o the 125 stages it competed in thatsa winning ratio o 57 per cent.

Even more encouraging has been thecars perormance on asphalt. Once Fords

Achilles heel, its now a surace Latvala andSolberg can genuinely challenge or victoryon. All these acts bode well or the team inblue as it prepares to reel in its rivals overthe remaining six events on the 2012calendar.

Ford World Rally Team director MalcolmWilson told @Ford: Our pace is certainlycapable o winning rallies. Jari-Matti andPetter took 15 out o a possible 22 stagewins in Greece, which is certainly encourag-ing. We just need to translate our speedinto strong points.

I the team is to wrestle the manuactur-ers championship rom Citron, Jari-MattiLatvala will need to be at his brilliant best.A reak cross country skiing accident earlier

this year meant he missed Rally Argentinawith a broken collar bone. Thankully, theenorced break doesnt appear to haveblunted his speed.

We were all very pleased to see Jari-Matti Latvala back in the Ford Fiesta RSWRC in Greece and glad to see that hisrecovery has in no way aected his speed, added Wilson. He remains one o the ewdrivers capable o challenging SbastienLoeb on outright pace.

So what o team-mate Petter Solbergschances o winning in the Fiesta during thesecond hal o the season? Ford o Europe

motorsport chie Gerard Quinn, believes theormer world champion is more than capa-ble o topping the podium.

Petter has been antastic or us this

season. His enthusiasm is inectious andhes done everything weve asked o him.He made a very small mistake in Greecewhich could have cost him a win, but thataside hes been superb. Theres no doubt hecan win again.

Quinn added: Im genuinely very excitedabout the second hal o the season, as iseveryone connected with the team. Wevegot a very quick car, two o the astestdrivers around and I have every confdenceour ans will have lots to cheer aboutbetween now and the end o the year.
