Karl-Josef MüllerMahlerA biography

600 pages – softcover 12,0 x 19,0 cm € 17,95ISBN 978-3-254-08264-0 · SEM 8264

Today, more than ever, Gustav Mahler is highly ac-claimed as a ‘pioneer of new music’. Unlike any othercomposer in the late 19th century, he meteorically becamethe focus of attention of the musical public. Mahler’smusic is an adventure, as beautiful and frightening, aspeaceful and unpredictable as the world of which it isabout.

During his lifetime, Gustav Mahler was known rather asa powerful court opera director and less as a composer, for he could compose his own works only during thesummer months. But as such, Mahler had to competewith his fellow composers Anton Bruckner and RichardStrauss. In his newly edited book, Karl-Josef Müller triesto examine this discrepancy between Mahler’s high ethi-cal demands as a composer and his qualification by hisenvironment.

Being the result of lectures held by the author in America, this book keeps the promise made in the title: to show thecomposer in his world, portray him in his workshop anddescribe the disputes he has to overcome with himself, with the idea, the ‘material’, the fashion, the audience.Hindemith examines the conditions under which it is pos-sible for an artist to do creative work.A new music theory is emerging, developing out of ele-mentary components in a generally comprehensible andclear way while discussing in particular the technical sideof composing. In this juxtaposition of creative artist andenvironment, the severe and critical statements on pre-vailing conditions result from the high sense of responsi-bility which, in Hindemith’s opinion, has to define thepath of the musician.

For the first time since Hugo Riemann, a book is pre-sented that is based on a completely new rhythm theory:the ‘theory of components’. Petersen’s theses and analy-ses make it possible to describe and understand the rhyth-mic structure of music better than before. Whereasrhythm has been described simply as an interplay oflongs and shorts with accents and metres up to now, Pe-tersen shows that there are secondary rhythms apart fromthe basic rhythms which are not notated because they de-pend on tonal properties and tonal figures. These‘rhythms of components’ are effective as a rhythmic fab-ric and at the same time gravity forming; they can evenchange metre and time.

In this book, Gerhard Mantel looks into the questionwhich means and tools a performer should have in orderto make a musical text into the intellectual and emotionalexperience intended by the composer. As is generallyknown, the ‘actual music’ does not exist in the printedwork. But which are the aesthetic and creative criteria forhow the performer can, or has to, treat the musical text inorder to interpret it and explain it to the listener? The musical imagination, the inner anticipation of themusical effect, is a vital condition for an interpretation. Inaddition, it is important to know, however, whereuponthis effect is based and how it can be achieved.Based on decades of concert and teaching experience, theauthor leads the reader to a unity of knowledge, planning, intuition and emotion and thus to an ‘interpretation tech-nique’ which is indispensable to an inspired interpretationand can be achieved by every musician in his/her verypersonal form.

When Julius Hey published his three-part work‘Deutscher Gesangsunterricht’ [German Singing Lessons]around 1900, he had no way of knowing that this text-book was to start an unprecedented triumphant progress.Originally, Hey had developed his method only for hispupils and as a mere singing manual. It was only the re-sponsibility for improving the often wrong pronunciationof actors and singers that prompted him to add a ‘speechpart’ to his main work. The fact that especially this part, entitled ‘Der kleine Hey’ [The Little Hey], became andhas remained – with the largest number of copies – thestandard work for speech training until today proves thevalidity of this method.Julius Hey’s textbook on the basics of the ‘art of speak-ing’ is the fundamental textbook for the speech training ofactors, speakers and singers as well as of all other profes-sions connected with the spoken word, and not least avaluable aid for school lessons and private studies.

For a long time, left-handedness has been regarded as‘deviation from the norm’, and musical instruments usu-ally are designed for right-handers even today. But thequestion arises whether or not the handedness, i.e. thepreference for using the left or right hand for certaintasks, also plays a role with such complex activities asmusic-making.The changed playing situation with instruments for left-handers touches on a topic that has to a large extent re-mained undiscovered and tabooed up to now. After a lookat history, the book describes the current state of dealingwith left-handedness in music-making – including allconsequences not only for the common order of music-making but especially for the capability and health of theperforming musicians. The author, a cellist and ‘right-hand playing’ left-hander,analyzes the musical practice of left-handed ‘normalplayers’ and left-handed players on numerous instrumentsfrom the perspective of an orchestra musician, instrumen-tal teacher and educationalist. The analysis is concludedwith recommendations for practising, teaching tips andanswers to questions of parents of left-handed children.

There’s no way around it: all musicians have to practicetheir whole life long. Yet very few musicians confrontthis ‘necessary evil’ and give it much serious thought. One might say that practicing has not been made practica-ble for the practical musician... In his ‘Handbuch Üben,’the experienced music teacher Ulrich Mahlert has broughttogether a number of renowned authors from the perfor-ming arts and neighboring disciplines who are more thanfamiliar with the joys and problems of practicing. Theiressays have given rise to an important book that is rich indetails on a topic that is often perplexing and always ti-mely. The concise subtitle ‘Fundamentals. Concepts. Me-thods.’ is programmatic, for the book seeks to conveyimpulses for pleasurable and fruitful practicing. In thebest of cases, individually adjusted practicing can contri-bute to self-perception, self-criticism and personal deve-lopment. The book has fulfilled its purpose if this goal isreached. One can only hope that this volume will becomea standard work for everyone who practices!

Michael DartschDer Geigenkasten Vol. 1Streichen, Greifen, Spielen – die ersten Schritte

120 pages - paperback€ 21.00ISMN 979-0-004-18186-7 · EB 8771

With his ‘Violin Case’, Michael Dartsch offers an ideal supple-ment to every violin method and teaching situation. Organizedaccording to themes, it has lots and lots of material: songs andpieces for playing on open strings, for stopping the string withindividual fingers, for taking the different steps in fingering, forrhythm, notation, improvisation, and exercises in poise, postureand motion. Dartsch, an experienced conservatory teacher, hasdeveloped a compelling concept that is underscored by some in-teresting information he provides on the violin as well as by ori-ginal texts to the songs. This allows the players to sing alongwith the melody. The pieces are almost always in two parts, which stimulates joint music-making.

Along with comments intended for the teacher, the ‘Violin Case’contains a song index arranged according to specific occasions,a text for the parents and a CD with tuning notes, a selection ofplay-along pieces and some stylistically enriching insights intoviolin literature. The ‘Violin Case’ is thus wonderfully suited forgeneral teaching purposes as an alternative to a violin method.

Thomas SchlinkKontrabass!Eine Schule für Kinder und Jugendliche – Vol. 1Set for piano by Thomas BlomenkampIllustrations by Dorothea LindenbergFirst steps with the double bass

113 pages - paperback€ 17.00ISMN 979979-0-004-18358-8 · EB 8813

It’s not by accident that ‘Kontrabass!’ (Double Bass!) hasan exclamation mark in its title, for Thomas Schlink’smethod begins from scratch, i.e. it requires no practicalknowledge of the instrument. The ‘Kontrabass!’ conceptis so broad that all teachers can proceed from their ownplaying techniques and methods, and can teach them wit-hout difficulty.

In Book 1, the student goes from plucked and bowedplaying on open strings to the first position. In order to letthe student interact with others from the very start, thebook often includes an accompanying part for bass, pianoor melody instrument. Of course, such a well-planned in-strumental method offers more yet: work materials, exer-cises, suggestions – in a word, double-bass lessons arerounded off perfectly with ‘Kontrabass!’ Incidentally, thedouble bass was recently proclaimed the ‘instrument ofthe year 2010’ in Schleswig-Holstein. Schlink’s ‘Kontra-bass!’ would thus be the (instrumental) method of theyear.
