Since more than 50 years, there is a permanentdiscussion about the use of forbidden active agentsduring conducting athletic activity. In the beginningssubstances as arsenic, cocaine, alcohol andamphetamine have been the point of interest. Todayanabolic drugs, blood doping, EPO, human growthhormone and many more manipulations play majorroles.

Although there are restrains and penalties since theend of the sixties, it did not hinder the use offorbidden and damaging substances. Athletessacrificed their health and the sportive fairness on thealtar of prosperity and achievement.

The model character of the athletes is reflected insociety as a whole. The low inhibition level within thepopulation leads to increased use of allowed andprohibited drugs to reach doubtful aims.

The book offers detailed explanations about dopingregulations, all active agents and substances. Theirimpact and risk are described. Furthermore the bookcontains the various doping control systems and theirlegal basis. A special chapter is reserved for dopinginvolving animals.

Thanks to the comprehensive information's included, the book is a standard reference for all who need to beinformed about the topic: not only for sportsphysicians and scientist, but also for the athletesthemselves and their coaches. Medical doctors andpharmacists may find information about medical abuseand doping for their daily work.

These and many other questions on thisfrequently discussed subject and often wrongly practisedstretching exercises are answered in this book.

The weak point in transferring the latest research findingsinto practice is above all that many recreational sportspeople do stretching exercises without knowing preciselywhy and when this really makes sense. Prof. JürgenFreiwald succeeds in giving detailed answers to thesequestions in his “Optimal Stretching Methods,“ a workunique in the German language. He investigates scientificfacts and systematically lays bare the myths. The book ishowever more than a work on scientific rudiments thatexplains the influence of stretching exercises on theanatomy, joints, muscles, vasculature, connective tissuesand nervous system, since its many illustrations alsoprovide practitioners with the opportunity to put their ownindividual programmes together, with the final section ofthe book entirely dedicated to some fifty examples ofpractical exercises that implement the theory. In additionto stretching programmes for sports people the book alsosuggests everyday exercises aimed at helping the desk-bound reader to relax back and shoulders. In doing this theauthor thinks far outside the box, answering questionsregarding social and psychological aspects as well as thoseabout neuromuscular balances and imbalances.

Kinesiological taping as performed in the Far Easthas established itself as a therapeutic method inGermany and Europe. Taping is a surface therapybecause of it’s effects on the surface of the skin.It complements and supports other methods suchas massage, physical therapy, manual therapy, lymph drainage, and some forms of neurologicaltherapy.

Kinesiological taping can act preventively as wellas therapeutically and can also be employed inthe rehabilitative setting. It focuses especially onsensation and mobilization, making it optimallysuited especially for sports medicine.

It is possible to exert stimulating or detoningeffects on muscles and joints as well as thelymphatic and nervous systems by means ofspecial application of elastic tape bandages.Taping thereby activates and supports the body’sown healing processes.

This book explains all aspects of kinesiologicaltaping from the history of taping to aftercare.Numerous illustrations allow various applicationtechniques and individual steps of taping to beeasily understood.

Kinesiology Taping in the manual therapy andphysiotherapy

Through many years of practical experience andtraining, the author realized that elements of

anatomical knowledge, as well as the functionalthinking, has been forgotten through the passing ofthe time by some of his colleagues.

Similarly, diagnoses are given on a recipe onlygenerally. The term "syndrome" can only hint on theregion close to the physical discomfort, not the actualcause.

This book is not only a compact reference forkinesiological taping, but also useful to refresh theknowledge of muscle origins and insertions withcharacteristics, functions, and innervations of pre-strain. It is also suitable for diagnosis and differentialdiagnosis of medical conditions.

It describes in detail:

In Part 1:

• muscle, ligament, pain, fascia, correction andneural techniques

• techniques in fibrosis, scarring and bruising

• lymphtaping

In Part 2:

• common illnesses in practice, classified accordingto body regions with tests for differentialdiagnosis and their tape applications

Target groups: physiotherapists, massage therapists, manual therapists, sports physicians, naturopaths, osteopaths, midwives and physician assistants

Sports didactic is the central reference discipline andprofessional science of all sports teachers, studentteachers and students. But also for those who areresponsible for movement-related teach-learn methodsin extra-curricular sport (e.g. in training, fitness andexercise, therapy, experiential education or tourism)and who need it for the planning and evaluation of,and reflection on, the meaningful context of theteaching behind the sports that they offer.

The substantial and diverse essentials of this disciplineare reviewed by more than 25 leading sports scientistsin a clear but penetrating way in the present handbook. In doing so the range of relevant knowledge of sportinstruction is conveyed within a structure that permitscomprehensive and precise study.

The book is divided into three main thematic areascorresponding to the systematic ways in which sportinstruction is scientifically contextualised.

In the first section basic directions in educationalthinking and research are discussed.

The second section features articles devoted to theconceptual dimensions of school education andupbringing applications, and of teach-learn methods.

In the third section the body of sports educationknowledge is methodically substantiated by aprocessing and clear presentation of the relevantbackgrounds to teach-learn methods in sports teaching.

The editors:

Harold Lange is a college lecturer for sports education. As well as working on issues concerning the principlesof sports education his main areas of interest are firstand foremost the conceptual questions and problemsinvolved in teaching sport (especially regarding itsmethodology) as well as educational topics relating totraining and movement.

Silke Sinning is a university lecturer and stand-inprofessor for play and sports education. In addition toher work on the principles of sports education herprimary focus is on conceptual issues and problemsinvolved in the teaching of sports (especially play andsport didactics), gender research, the ecology ofphysical activity and movement research in education.

This book offers its users (sports psychologists, sports people and trainers) a systematic structure in practical sports psychology and a basic procedural framework for sports psychology. Without claiming to cover the whole spectrum of training methods in sports psychology the authors describe techniques which have proved themselves during their many years of experience in elite sports.

The book should not be regarded as being principally atheoretical textbook on sports psychology but ratheras a practical manual with concrete instructions ontraining in sports psychology. The training proceduresintroduced are not simply derived from intuition or theauthors’ experience; they are the end result of provenresearch findings into sports psychology. Cross-referencing of sources and notes on more detailedliterature permit the interested reader a deeper insightinto the material. A “psychological toolbox“ in the lastchapter presents the practitioner with an overview thatallows speedy identification of a problem and its cause,as well as offering suggestions for suitable solutions.

The authors:Jürgen Beckmann is Professor of Sports Psychology at the Technical University of Munich and first chairman of the working party on sports psychology. He has training licences for several kinds of sport and has been in charge of numerous top sports people and national teams (alpine skiing and golf among others) for over twenty years.

Anne-Marie Elbe has gained her university teaching credentials for sports science and has been teaching sports psychology at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark since 2007. She is licensed as an athletics trainer and has been involved in practical sports psychology in various sporting fields for several years.

Medical Presentation

The Lecture Series

Aim

Apart from the purely medical care, it is also among theduties of a doctor, to inform his patients about preventingillness and teach them on their specific medical condition.

One way to pass on this knowledge are lectures heldbefore a group of patients with the same interest. Thatcan be the affected persons themselves or their relativesand friends who have to deal with the new situation as aresult of a chronic disease as e.g. Diabetes mellitus.

Composition

Each lecture includes the following contents:

• thematic content for the lecturer to inform aboutthe basics and special informations about thetopic

• the slides as PowerPointTM Presentation

• ready to use handouts for the audience

Technically the presentations are completely available asPDF/PPT for download. Each presentation is sold in oneunit which can be opened by the user on a WindowsTMPC.

In the thematic content of the lecture topic will beprocessed in terms the patient understands, so that it canserve as a guide for the presentation. The text is drawn tothe corresponding slide in the presentation.

The presentation consists of about 25-45 slides with textand graphics that may be presented in the given order orany combination the lecturer selects. At the end of thepresentation is a blank slide in the layout of the lecturetopic, which allows adding further individual slides. Theslides in the presentation can be individualised.

The handouts are used to hand out in-depth informationof your patients. A blank document will allow compilingfurther text in the layout of the presentation.

All content can be printed and reproduced for the use ofthe personal lecture.

Causes, Diagnosis, Treatment

"Who needs spittle?"

Demographic trends and the continuously evolving therapiesfor serious diseases cause the number of patients withsubjective and objective xerostomia or hyposalivation toincrease significantly.

The new reference book by Sebastian Hahnel combinesextensive knowledge and summarizes causes, diagnosis andtreatment of the disease for dentists, physicians and nursingstaff. Starting with autoimmune diseases to infections ortumors to drug side effects – there are many causes of thesymptom “dry mouth”. And “dry mouth” is common: aboutone in five adults suffers from it. For Germany, this meansthat more than ten million adults have xerostomia. And therisk increases greatly with age and the number ofmedication taken.

Until today there is often uncertainty about on how to dealwith the disease xerostomia or hyposalivation. This is wherethe new reference book will give its assistance.

Based on the composition and functions of saliva, the authorexplains the many causes that can lead to “dry mouth”, andcategorizies them into disease-related symptoms as well asside effects of therapies. He gives practical advice on thediagnosis and presents the various therapeutic strategies, such as causal therapies, salivary stimulation and supportivetherapies. Because treatment often requires aninterdisciplinary approach, the book is not only aimed atdentists, but also to colleagues in internal medicine, psychiatry, geriatrics and other specialties, as well asnursing staff.

Adhesive dentistry – Techniques toward clinicalsuccess

Increased aesthetics, the preservation of the tooth, patient analgesia and freedom from symptoms, as wellas the durability of the composite filling – theconsequent reorientation toward adhesive technologyand the significant success that this can provide. However, success can only be achieved inconsequence of immaculate preparation. A correctform of adhesive fixation by means of enamel etching, wet bonding and re-wetting is just as essential as asufficient length of polymerisation time.

The guide at hand formulates eight basic rules ofadhesive technology. They are presented in a concisemanner and explained in practice-oriented detailthroughout the course of the book. Thus, theillustration of clinical application is presented step-by-step with numerous images and is supported by bothsignificant background knowledge and relevantterminology. Frequently asked questions regardinghypersensitivities, point of proximal contact, colourselection and durability are answered. The bookcontains the quintessence of seventeen years ofpractical experience in the area of adhesivetechnology. During this time, the author hasaccompanied numerous studies and doctoral thesesand has held over 500 lectures.

A special plus is presented by the chapter withreference notes to the dental assistant, because thechairside assistant is a significant factor contributingtoward the reproducibility of results and an effectiveprocedure. Thus, the work provides a competentintroduction to both the interested dentist and thestudent.

Dental film, OPG, lateral cephalogram and DVT

Since around 20 years, digital radiology has becomeincreasingly widespread in the field of moderndentistry. In addition to quick availability of digitalradiological image data and the extensive range ofpossibilities of further and post-processing, thereduced level of radiation exposure also offersparticular advantages in comparison with conventionalmethods.

The medical book at hand primarily illustrates theclinical aspects of imaging techniques of dental film,OPG and DVT and provides a review of these aspectson the basis of numerous clinical examples.Radiological possibilities and the boundaries of cariesdiagnostics, as well as the parodontological andendodontical diagnoses, the application of respectiveimaging for prosthetic and implantological issues, aswell as oral or jaw (maxillary) surgery treatments, arereviewed in extensive detail. All displayed X-rays areavailable for enlarged views on CD-ROM.

The various methods and processes of metrologicalevaluation of the X-rays, the legal bases and the errorpossibilities in digital radiography are also subject toreview. In addition to possible image and settingerrors, the consequences of an inadequateinterpretation or the omission of further X-rays duringthe course of therapy are also demonstrated. Anoverview of respective current literature facilitates adetailed study.

Modern endodontics offers a decisive advantage: Evenin cases of difficult anatomical conditions or severedegrees of deterioration, teeth can still be predictablytreated and preserved on a long-term basis.

The practical guide at hand imparts the necessaryknowledge by compiling a multitude of scientific andtechnical findings and achievements in a sustainabletreatment concept, which can bear up against anyendodontical situation.

A guarantor of success is the consideration of aetiologyand pathogenesis of pulpal and periapical diseaseswith their microbiological principles, which areconsequently presented in a practice-oriented manner. On the basis of this, the pain therapy and eachrespective further work step is precisely explained –from the general preparatory measures to thepreparation of the access cavities, the determination ofthe endodontical working time length and the optimaldisinfection, right up to root canal filling and definitivecoronal care.

The reader is able to obtain a substantial overview ofall appropriate instruments and materials, whichequally includes both classical working equipment andnew nickel-titan systems.

During the course of the last decade, laser dentistryhas undergone rapid further advancement – which isparticularly due to the groundbreaking work of Germanscientists, practitioners and researchers. Theadvocates of laser dentistry, who we considered to bean eccentric breed only two decades ago, are nowviewed as “totally normal” dentists, and the practice oflaser dentistry has become accepted in the world ofscience and by relevant dental associations.

In order to further lower the “inhibition threshold”,with regard to the application of laser treatment indental practices, this book represents a work book foreveryday dentistry: On the one hand, laser systemsand wavelengths relevant to dentistry are presented, whereby the multifarious indications of current laserdentistry occupy a particularly wide area.
