Service of Worship
July 1, 2012 at 10:00 a.m.
Fifth Sunday after Pentecost
Welcome! Thank you for joining us today for worship. If you are visiting, please join us in wearing a name tag so that we might greet you.
Our ushers are ready to help! They have large print editions of the Bible, Hymnal,
and today’s bulletin; hearing devices; activity bags with quiet activities
for older children staying in worship; and directions to our safe, loving nursery in
our Monticello Wing for babies and young children.
÷ ÷ ÷ Prayer of Preparation
O God, in our time of worship, and throughout the hours of our days, remain at
the center of our thoughts and actions. Amen.

* Opening Hymn
Come, Let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord,
our God, our Maker. For he is our peace, and we are the people of
his pasture. The sheep of his hand, the sheep of his hand.
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never
come to an end; they are new every morning; new every morning;
great is thy faithfulness.
÷ ÷ ÷ Renewing Our Relationship with God
Call to Reconciliation and Prayer of Confession Rev. Dean Myers
Leader: We let fears control us, we let doubt become the way of life for
us. If we but look, we will see our lives, and our world, cradled in
God's loving hands. Let us confess our lack of faith, even as we
trust the One who has promised to hear us when we cry out.
Join me as we confess together, saying,
People: Merciful God, you are our stronghold in times of trouble. Yet,
we confess how easily we identify with the fear of the disciples
when they were caught in the storm; like them, our faith
falters. We fail to remember that your power can bring peace
even into storms. Renew and strengthen our faith so that we
can live empowered by your presence. This we pray in Jesus’
name.

love and hope, our God forgives us and fills us with faith. Our
God affirms us for who we are - those whose brokenness is
made whole, whose sin is forgiven, whose lives overflow with
faith. Thanks be to God! Amen.

Our father, who art in heaven, hallowed by thy name, Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.
Amen.

Psalm 107: 1-3, 23-32
O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures
forever.
Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, those he redeemed from trouble
and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the
north and from the south.
Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the mighty waters;
they saw the deeds of the Lord, his wondrous works in the deep.
For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of
the sea.
They mounted up to heaven, they went down to the depths; their courage
melted away in their calamity;
they reeled and staggered like drunkards, and were at their wits’ end.
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out from
their distress;
he made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed.
Then they were glad because they had quiet, and he brought them to their
desired haven.
Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to
humankind.
14
Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the
assembly of the elders.
Mark 4: 35-41
On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across
to the other side.” And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with
them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great
windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was
already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion;
and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we
are perishing?” He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea,
“Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He
said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they
were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this,
that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
