Utahs Environments

ForestsUtahs EnvironmentsContent Objective: I can illustrate elements of Utahs forest using placement to create depth.Language Objective: I can complete a paragraph describing Utahs forest regions. In the cool forest, you can smell the leaves and trees. You can hear woodpeckers drilling into tree trunks.

A hummingbird whizzes by. Listen to the squirrels chattering. A deer raises its head, munching a leaf. Fish rise to the surface of a cold lake.

Sounds beautiful doesnt it.As an artist you use these words and experiences to create a picture for others to enjoy the beauty. Creating Utahs forest regions an artist must know something about the plant life. One plant that is very common in Utah forest is the Aspen Tree.

The Aspen Tree Aspen wood is white and soft, but fairly strong, and has low flammability. It has a number of uses, notably for making matches and paper where its low flammability makes it safer to use than other wood. In Utah, it appears most frequently in the mountainous regions and coexists with conifers.

The aspens are all native to cold regions with cool summers. They are all medium-sized deciduous trees reaching 1530m (4998ft) tall. Deciduous trees have flat leaves to help with photosynthesize. Deciduous trees lose their leaves in the fall and go into dormancy (sleep).

All of the aspens typically grow in large colonies, derived from a single seedling. They spread by means of root suckers, meaning new plants rise from the root system. A new tree may appear at up to 3040m (98130ft) from the parent tree. Each individual tree can live for 40150 years above ground, but the root system of the colony is long-lived.

Plant AdaptationIn some cases, this is for thousands of years, sending up new trunks as the older trunks die off above ground. One such colony in Utah, given the nickname of "Pando", is estimated to be 80,000 years old,[2] making it possibly the oldest living colony of aspens. They are able to survive forest fires, because the roots are below the heat of the fire, with new sprouts growing after the fire burns out.

Utahs Forest Biome Forest biomes of Utah are located in the ___________ landform regions. They contain a mix of __________ trees and coniferous trees. The ________ tree is a very common tree found in Utahs Forests. It has survived for many years because of __________________________. It helps Utahs economy because it can be used for ___________________________. Art work Title_______________Artist ________________
