Introduction 2

OBU FACTBOOK 2017-2018

OBU in Summary Oklahoma Baptist University is a senior level coeducational institution with an enrollment of approximately 2,000 students. About 65 percent of OBU’s students are from Oklahoma, while the other 35 percent come from approximately 34 other states and 39 countries. OBU is located in Shawnee, a city of 31,500 residents, which is 35 miles east of Oklahoma City and 90 miles southwest of Tulsa, near the geographical center of the state. OBU’s 200-acre campus is on the northwest edge of Shawnee just two miles south of Interstate 40. OBU utilizes the semester calendar plan with a four-month fall term, a three-week January term, a four-month spring term, and two four-week summer terms. The University offers nine baccalaureate degrees: the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science in Education, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Professional Accountancy, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Musical Arts, Bachelor of Music Education and Bachelor of Fine Arts; four master’s degrees: Master of Arts, Master of Business Administration, Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy, and Master of Science in Nursing; and one associate’s degree: Associate of Arts in Christian Studies. OBU’s curriculum features strong general studies requirements and 84 areas of concentration and majors in departments of instruction. Areas of study lead to a large number of entry-level occupations in such career areas as business, communications, education, fine arts, recreation, religious vocations, scientific and technical areas, and social sciences and services. History The Baptists of Oklahoma Territory, realizing the great need for Christian emphasis in institutions of higher learning, decided in 1889 to build a college. This institution, Oklahoma Baptist College, was located at Blackwell, Oklahoma, and was maintained until 1913. For several years, a Baptist academy also was operated at Hastings, Oklahoma, but in 1912 it was moved to Mangum and reestablished as Southwest Baptist College, a junior college. Like Oklahoma Baptist College, this school suffered from a poor geographical location within the state, and closed in 1914. The real founding of Oklahoma Baptist University occurred in 1906 when the State Baptist Convention, in session in Shawnee, appointed a commission to make plans for the founding of a Baptist university. In 1907, a board of trustees was elected, and in 1910 articles of incorporation were granted. The school actually opened in September 1911, in the basement of the First Baptist Church and in the Convention Hall of Shawnee. Also in 1911, a group of individual Baptists organized an independent school at Oklahoma City under the name of Carey College, but it had to close its doors at the end of four weeks. Many of the students and a few faculty members transferred to Oklahoma Baptist University. The City of Shawnee contributed the original 60-acre campus and the first building, Shawnee Hall, which was ready for occupancy by September 1915. Since that time, adjoining tracts of 140 acres have been added and 30 major buildings have been erected. OBU is owned and supported by the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma, which consists of approximately 1,700 cooperating Southern Baptist churches. OBU is responsible through the President to the Board of Trustees, whose members are elected by that Convention.

Introduction 3

OBU FACTBOOK 2017-2018

OBU’s Mission Statement As a Christian liberal arts university, OBU transforms lives by equipping students to o pursue academic excellence o integrate faith with all areas of knowledge o engage a diverse world o live worthy of the high calling of God in Christ.

Purpose Statement Oklahoma Baptist University is an institution founded on Christian principles and teachings whose primary purpose is to conduct educational programs in the traditional arts and sciences and in other disciplines with the intent to prepare students for effective leadership and service in the various vocations. The mission finds expression through a strong liberal arts core curriculum which supports degree programs designed to prepare students for careers and graduate study; through activities planned to stimulate spiritual, intellectual, social, cultural, and physical development; and through an environment that reflects the application of Christian principles and teachings. Owned by the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma and operated through a Board of Trustees elected by the Convention, the University engages in educational tasks in a manner consistent with the purposes of the Convention: to furnish the means by which the churches may carry out the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20). To achieve its purpose, the University has adopted several goals, among which are:

o To be a Christian learning community where faith and knowledge contribute to the individual’s awareness: of himself and his obligations within a diverse and interrelated society; of truth and its force; of the joy of discovery and the beauty of existence; and of the legacy of the past, the challenge of the present, and the promise of the future.

o To cultivate Christian community in which the Baptist principles of individual freedom and dignity as well as mutual kindness and respect and concern for others are stressed.

o To encourage a climate of learning where the student may develop the lifelong habit of critical thinking in the search for truth.

o To identify and communicate the knowledge, experience, and values which constitute man’s cultural heritage.

o To provide opportunities for the student to engage in a serious study of the Bible and to learn the philosophy and tenets of the Judeo-Christian heritage; to instill an awareness of and an appreciation for the distinctive Baptist contribution to Christian theology and for the values inherent in the Christian faith; to encourage Christian commitment.

o To foster an awareness of the needs of the human community and the responsibility of each individual in an active life of service.

o To offer a broad-based liberal arts education and specialized professional training in mutually supportive roles.

o To afford the opportunity to explore the relevance of all academic endeavors to the Christian life. o To make personnel, services and facilities of the institution available to meet appropriate educational,

cultural, and religious needs of its several constituencies. o To serve the Baptist constituency through the development of informed, enlightened, sensitive

leadership. Administrators, faculty and staff members will conduct themselves and their professional activity in a manner which is consistent with the Mission and Purpose Statement of the University. All academic courses, student activities and University policies and procedures will be conducted in a manner that does not contradict the Mission and Purpose Statement of the University\

Chapter 2 15

OBU FACTBOOK 2017-2018

CHAPTER 2: ENROLLMENT INFORMATION Enrollment affects every aspect of University life and is directly related to institutional quality, both through the mixture of students with various academic achievement levels and through the additional tuition revenue that can be used to improve academic programs. Enrollment data drives the demand for faculty and courses and determines the need for classrooms, library materials, residence hall space, student services, and more. Highlights include the following:

• Oklahoma Baptist University reported a total headcount of 1965 students in its undergraduate and 128 in its graduate programs.

• Oklahoma Baptist University students reside in 34 different states, 1 territory, and there are 75 students from 39 different foreign countries. About 65 percent of OBU students live in Oklahoma.

• New Freshmen enrollment is 555. • The percentage of male students in the student body is 41%, with the percentage female

students at 59%. Gender diversity trends at the University have typically matched national college enrollment gender distributions compared to most Christian institutions, which tend to attract much higher percentages of female students.

• The number of minority students enrolled at OBU is 696 students, or 33 percent. This percentage was influenced by the continuing strong enrollment of African American students (5%), Native American students (5%), and International students (4%).

• Nursing remained Oklahoma Baptist University’s most popular undergraduate major, enrolling 207 students or 12 percent of the undergraduate student body. The following five majors enrolled the most undergraduate students:

• Nursing – 238 • Biology - 87 • Management – 85 • Psychology: Pre-Counseling – 70 • Communication Studies - 66 Oklahoma Baptist University has enjoyed significant growth during the past decade, with a 17 percent increase in enrollment since 2006 from 1740 students to 2093 students in 2017. As the size of the student body continues to grow, Oklahoma Baptist University remains committed to its mission of preparing these students to serve God in all they do. OBU FACTBOOK 2017-2018

CHAPTER 4: FACULTY AND STAFF CHARACTERISTICS While students, curriculum, facilities, and finances are all essential to the University’s success, the element that draws all of these into a functioning enterprise is the University faculty and staff. With their direct influence on their students’ personal, professional, and academic success, faculty members fulfill many of the fundamental goals of the University. Staff members help maintain the operation, vision, and growth of the University by overseeing the day-to-day processes that allow the school to function efficiently and competently. Together, the faculty and staff — all of whom are dedicated to Christ and to students — are critical to the University’s success in accomplishing its mission. 72 percent of full-time teaching faculty hold terminal degrees (89/124) 100 percent of administrative faculty hold terminal degrees (7/7) 44 percent of full-time employees* are female (207/471) and 56 percent are male (264/471) Sources: Office of Institutional Research *Includes faculty, administrative and support staff Undergraduate and Graduate Teaching Faculty— Fall 2017 Rank and Highest Degree

This position has been affirmed through research, which reveals that if students remain in campus housing they are more likely to complete their college education, develop a strong spiritual formation, participate in campus activities, adjust to various social situations, and establish lifelong friendships with students and faculty.

o Spiritual Life is committed to supporting the University’s Mission by creating and advancing an atmosphere beneficial for spiritual formation through vibrant worship encounters, small group experiences, and through global engagement (local and global) in Shawnee, across the U.S. and around the world. Spiritual Life is dedicated to the spiritual development of students along with their social, academic and physical development.

o Worship – Occasions for worship are found in Chapel*, special emphasis weeks, mid-day events, and selected nights of celebration. Student led worship teams allow students to use their gifts in creative and celebrative worship experiences like Refuge, Canterbury and Connect Chapel. Many of these teams also find opportunity to use their gifts in church settings in the surrounding area and state.

o Community – Small groups are developed each year through the layers of student ministry. These layers of ministry are affinity based (e.g. colleges, athletics, residential life). These groups provide personalized attention and a sense of belonging. Students are encouraged to discover gifts and passions that help focus their involvement in personal spiritual growth. Basic spiritual formation and leadership development are advanced in the context of small groups. Larger group settings (e.g. Noonday and Connect Chapel) provide support for and entrance to small group ministry opportunities.

o Outreach – Local – Channels for local outreach are available throughout campus. Service learning is provided through select classroom experiences and student led service teams that are life giving agents in the Shawnee area. Every week more than one hundred and fifty students from across campus are leading and serving in youth, inner city community, volunteer, senior citizen, prison and special needs perpetual service projects. New projects are considered each year. Global – OBU students participate in summer, semester and

extended term mission opportunities each year. Before graduation, most OBU students will have firsthand local and global engagement experience.

o Avery T Willis Center for Global Outreach – Global engagement (both local and global) is coordinated through the Avery T. Willis Center for Global Outreach. Global engagement is provided through select courses, faculty direction, and student leadership.

o OBU Center for Discipleship – In 2017-2018, OBU launched another center for excellence at OBU. The Center for Discipleship is designed specifically to provide resources and support for personal discipleship throughout campus life. The center is made possible through generous gifts from a national Christian foundation. These gifts assist with staff funding for individuals raising support to serve as discipleship specialists at OBU; curriculum development for programs like GraceLife, a discipleship series designed to introduce students to the foundations of the Christian faith, spiritual formation, scriptural meditation (the Bible and prayer), decision making, global outreach, spiritual guidance and perseverance. Faculty members and university administrators are involved in material development and selection and are serving as mentors of students. Faculty members participating in initial stages are from the colleges of business, fine arts, nursing, science and mathematics, and theology and ministry.

o Chapel – Chapel is the central gathering where the OBU family worships and glorifies God while building community, informing and educating. The Chapel program is an integral part of campus life at Oklahoma Baptist University. Chapels emphasize praise and participation in a creative and celebratory atmosphere. Chapels are provided each Wednesday of the semester at 10:00 am. Alternative worship experiences are presented on select Mondays and Fridays at 10:00 am. These alternative chapels are more casual and are often more student-oriented in style, presentation and leadership.

o Emerging Leaders – A new cooperative initiative that integrates spiritual life and student life to challenge, inspire, network and train the emerging leaders of the OBU campus.

o International Mission Board and North American Mission Board – The International Mission Board (IMB) and the North American Mission Board (NAMB) graciously provide spiritual life staff as global consultants, mobilizers, and/or discipleship specialists. In particular, NAMB provides an avenue for student ministry associates to raise support for serving their roles in the areas of discipleship and/or mobilization. At the present time, two discipleship specialists in residence positions are made possible through gifts given to the OBU Center for Discipleship and through fund raising efforts made possible by the North American Mission Board.

ADVANCEMENT AND UNIVERSITY RELATIONS Advancement and Alumni

o Advancement - For more than 100 years, OBU has delivered a distinctively Christian liberal arts education. Still today, OBU transforms lives by equipping students to pursue academic excellence, integrate faith with all areas of knowledge, engage a diverse world, and live worthy of the high calling of God in Christ. Through financial gifts to OBU, scholarships are provided to phenomenal students, the work of gifted faculty is supported, investments are made in innovative programs, and OBU’s tradition of academic excellence and a Christian commitment is continued.

o Alumni Relations keeps graduates connected through regional chapters and campus events, like homecoming.

o Gift Planning specializes in bequests, estate gift and charitable gift plans that create perpetual scholarship funds and increase the University’s endowment. Donors have played important roles in Oklahoma Baptist University’s history, and their gift today secure our future.

o Annual Support - OBU's annual fund encourages financial support which assists in the university's operation. This support is contributed through unrestricted gifts, support for the Bison Athletic Association (athletic booster group) and support for the Friends of the Arts (arts support group). Annual support comes through a variety of appeals, including the annual phonathon (January-February), direct mail, personal contact, etc. Unrestricted support assists the university in providing the difference between the total cost of educating the student and what the student actually pays. The Bison Athletic Association supplements the University athletic programs through scholarship aid, the purchase of equipment, programming costs and other needs as determined by the Athletic Director and team coaches. The Friends of the Arts organization aids the Warren M. Angell College of Fine Arts through scholarship aid, the purchase of additional equipment, programming costs and other needs as determined by the Dean and Faculty of the College.

o Endowed Gifts to OBU • Scholarships - An endowed scholarship requires a minimum corpus of $10,000. Earnings from

the corpus provide for an annual scholarship award. Scholarships can be awarded based on a variety of factors (academic disciplines, geographic area, financial need, etc.)

• Lectureship - The lectureship is a temporary appointment, usually given to a visiting scholar or speaker during a select visit to OBU. The endowment required for a named lectureship is $50,000. These lectureships can address certain academic disciplines, subject matters or other areas of academic thought/discussion.

• Professorship - The endowed professorship is a partially-funded post which is awarded to a professor who is prominent in his or her field, an outstanding teacher, and one who has demonstrated exceptional ability in the selected academic discipline. The endowed academic professorship can be endowed for $250,000 and named for or by the donor. The endowment will be used to enhance salary, benefits, and certain expenses, such as travel, research, or secretarial assistance.

• Chair - The endowed chair is similar to the endowed professorship in terms of the assistance provided, except that it is the highest funded endowed post. The faculty member holding this position is considered to be one of the most distinguished faculty members on the University campus. This position can be endowed for $500,000.
