Foreword to the Security Council of TEIMUN 2011

Dear Security Council delegate,

We would like to warmly welcome you to the Security Council (SC) of the 2011 edition of The European International Model United Nations (TEIMUN). In the last couple of months, we have worked tirelessly to ensure that this year’s Security Council simulation will address the most pressing concerns that have plagued international deliberations. This year, our discussions will revolve around two key security dilemmas that require the attention of the international community.

To the surprise of many, transnational popular movements have engulfed the authoritarian fundaments of Arab societies in the Middle East. A country that has been especially affected, the Republic of Yemen, has been among the key countries in the region that currently experience major political turbulence. Even so, the problem of instability in Yemen and its effect on regional security has a deeper structural cause and meaning, rooted in Yemen’s distinct history, the chief aspects of which will be illuminated in attached background study. It will be the responsibility of the Security Council to look at the structural deficiencies of an unstable Yemen and develop the policy machinations that will uphold regional security in the Arabian peninsula.

In addition to familiarizing yourself with the background paper, you are well advised to broaden your research with additional readings that have been listed at the end of the guide. As chairs, we expect that you will have a through grasp of the conflict in Yemen, and that you are an expert on your country’s position and the policy options in play. Before the conference, you will be asked to submit position papers, detailing what you consider to be the key issues, and your views on them. It is creativity and a deft understanding of the essentials that will put you in a good starting position as we start to deliberate the problem of instability in Yemen. And precisely these skills will make you an excellent diplomat this year in our Council.

Looking forward to meet with each and every one of you,

With lots of TEIMUN love,

Yiqun Wang Babak MohammadzadehChairsSecurity Council
