Usted Commands and recommendations D.I.Spanish 3
Goals for the students--The students should be able to:
1. Write recommendations in the usted form of the verb.2. Give positive commands in the usted form of the verb.3. Give negative commands in the usted form of the verb.4. Correctly write recommendations with pronouns.5. Correctly write both positive and negative usted commands with pronouns.
On day 1, all students received the formative evaluation on which they had to write 10 commands in the usted form and 10 recommendations in the usted form. At least some of the commands had to be negative.
Based on how well they did on this formative assessment, students were placed in one of three groups--struggling with commands, struggling with recommendations, and not struggling with either commands or recommendations. Those students who struggled with both commands and recommendations got the work for both groups.
Those struggling with commands got the explanation of how to make commands and the command pages. Those struggling with recommendations got the explanation of recommendations and commands and the recommendation pages. Those who were not struggling with either concept got the two pages where they had to write their own sentences and give commands/recommendations to someone, then write a recipe using positive and negative commands, recommendations, and pronouns.

Reinforcement for giving "usted" commands and for making recommendations
How to give commands for "usted":
1. Start with the infinitive. Examples: hablar comer vivir2. Find the ýo form of that verb. hablo como vivo3. Drop the "o". habl com viv4. Add the opposite vowel. hable coma viva5. This will also be true in the negative. no hable no coma no viva
6. If there are any pronouns, they are attached to the positive commands. Examples: hábleme
dígame This usually means you will need to add an accent 2 syllables before the pronoun. 7. If there are any pronouns, they are in front of negative commands. Examples: no me hable
no me diga
8. Some weird "yo" forms you might want to learn:
poner--pongo decir--digotraer--traigo caer--caigohacer--hago conocer (and any verbs which end -cer--zcotener--tengo venir--vengocaber--quepo salir--salgo
9. Some words do not end in "o" in the yo form. These are irregular in the command form:
ser--sea dar--déestar--esté saber--sepair--vaya haber--haya
How to make recommendations for "usted"
1. Recommendations follow the same format as "usted" commands as far as the ending on the verb.2. The only difference is that the pronouns will always go in front of the recommendation whether it is positive or negative.

Read the following information about the dietary patterns of the family you are trying to help.
Carmen es la hermanastra de Xuxu. A Carmen no le gustan las frutas ni las verduras. Por eso, casi nunca las come, con la excepción de las papas. Necesita comer papas todos los días en alguna forma u otra. Sin embargo, sí bebe el jugo de varias frutas. A ella le encanta la carne, pero rechaza por completo toda la comida sabrosa. Le gusta que todo sea soso y sin sabor, ni sal, ni hierbas. Además, no quiere comer nada en combinación. Quiere que todos los alimentos se sirvan separados. Xuxu, your diet seems to be well-balanced and healthful. However, the consumption of items such as Cheetos and Coca-Cola destroys this balance. You should avoid all foods that are high in fact and low in nutritional value such as potato chips and sweets. You can eat these items without realizing the damage done to your body. It is probable that you are overweight due to eating so many empty calories. I recommend that you avoid all sugary and fat-laden foods. It is necessary that you fulfill your cravings with healthy food. I want you to select more fruits and to find healthy foods to satisfy you.
Carmen, your diet seems to be completely unhealthy. Very little of what you eat has nutritional value; for example, potatoes are a complete waste of calories. It is necessary that you eliminate potatoes completely. The impact of this diet on your brain and body has to be negative. I understand that your food has to be tasteless and textureless, but you should ensure that you acheive balanced nutrition. I demand that you take vitamins. It is possible that you could become ill without better nutrition. Maybe you should vary the meats that you eat because too much beef can cause serious problems with your heart. At a minimum, make sure you don’t fry your potatoes. It is bad that you lack exercise. It would be better if you increased your exercise--not a large amount. Simply walking more can burn calories and allow you to lose weight.
Section two--medical recommendations and commands--Read the problems the following people are suffering from. Give one recommendation or command to help them (usted form--give at least 2 negative commands.) Use pronouns where appropriate.
