Fret Not Thyself
Sin. It is a great weight on all those who recognize it for what it is. We see how daily we are inundated with wickedness everywhere. The Christian struggles with the wrong that is perpe-trated in this life and then begins to become anxious that there are so many who refuse to recognize God’s standard for conduct. They become anxious, like the child who knows the rules and then sees the other kids not following them. That child often becomes the enforcer in the absence of parents. They become anxious and can’t help but worry, because they know the standard...and their friends aren’t minding.
It is that way with Christians. We see all that is going on around us, and sometimes we become anxious because we can not force people to do good. We want them to, but we cannot force it. Psalm 37 speaks to this frustration, “Fret not thyself because of evil-doers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.” God will take care of us and them. We do not need to borrow trouble because as Jesus says, “Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” (Matt. 6:34) So what do we do when we feel anxiety set in because of those who are not doing right around us? Does God leave us any instruction? Most assuredly, yes! The Psalmist continues with an exhortation on what to actively do to get rid of the anxiety: V3- Trust in the Lord and Do Good, V4-Delight thyself in the Lord, and V5- Commit thy way unto the Lord. These are three things we can do to get rid of the stress of living in an unrighteous world. The ultimate emphasis is our complete reliance on God. We have the best Father who will take care of us, and the Psalmist asks that instead of focusing on the sin in the world, we ought to turn our affections heavenward to God and lean on him.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge
Him and He shall direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
