If you have finished your CERT training and looking for an opportunity to serve; there are several ways. The CST, Citizen Support Team, works inside the Emergency Operations Center to support the disas-ter response teams managing the incident. Comput-er, administrative and people skills are all needed during emergencies and disasters in Fort Bend County.

CERT training graduates work on our Exercise Sup-port Teams, to help facilitate training and exercises throughout the county. EST members assist instruc-tors during volunteer training and support exercises that test the skills and plans of public safety agen-cies throughout Fort Bend County. Organizational, teaching, administrative and people skills are valua-ble resources to the Exercise Support Team.

When disaster strikes, CERT members are prepared to respond in their immediate areas. Often the most needed support is information and the VOST, Virtual Operations Support Team, gives CERT members a place and opportunity to report conditions and emer-gency situations that arise during times of disasters. If you are a CERT member who habitually uses so-cial media and is familiar with cell phone photog-raphy, the VOST could use your skills.

FORT BEND COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT COMMUNITY PREPAREDNESS PAGE 7 VOLUME 9 ISSUE 1

Born in Orange County and raised by a veteran police detective and a teacher in Huntington Beach California, Terry McCord spent his child-hood enjoying the typical Southern California lifestyle. Terry was involved in scouts, back-packing, snowboarding, mountain biking and surfing, in which he competed as both an ama-teur and professional for many years. Addi-tionally, he started his martial arts training at the age of 12 at a local dojo where Mr. McCord learned Ryo-Bu Kai Karate, Iaido and Judo. At age 21, Terry began studying Aikido and began his training in American Kenpo at 23 years of age. He is now a 5th Degree Black Belt in Kenpo and has been teaching since 1995.

In December of 1994 Terry and his wife Wendy moved to Sugar Land, Texas due to a job relocation with Fluor Dan-iel Engineering. He continues to work as a Professional Piping Designer for a local engineering firm.

Several years ago while reading a copy of SWAT Magazine, he came across an article about how people could enhance their preparedness and survivability by getting involved with their local Office of Emergency Management and CERT training. Terry has been involved in multiple Fort Bend County CERT clas-ses and Wilderness Remote First Aid courses. He is a member of the EST, Exercise Support Team and has served on a regional Active Shooter Drill with several local public safety agencies. Ad-ditionally, he has also attended and cer-tified in GSAR 1 (Ground Search and Rescue) and looks forward to incorpo-rating the material into his own teach-ings.
