The event will be held from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at Wheeler Field House (16403 Lexington Blvd., Sugar Land, 77479). Academies exist to provide specialized learning commu- nities with concentrated and robust course pathways com- prised of career and academic classes, according to the dis- trict. The changes are de- signed to ensure each program represents a coherent career pathway leading to a gradua- tion endorsement, as required by House Bill 5. We are also dedicated to providing pro- grams that are accessible to all students, and that possess the rigor and admissions stan- dards that are representative of a highly selective college and career preparation program,” Dupre said. Boundary Plan Meanwhile, the FBISD ad- ministration presented a com- prehensive District-wide Feed- er Pattern and Boundary Plan to the FBISD Board of Trustees on January 12. The plan was created to bal- ance enrollment and plan for future growth in the fast-grow- ing District. The administra- tion will be asking the Board of Trustees to adopt the plan on Jan. 26, and two Commu- nity Information Meetings are planned for the community to learn more about the boundary recommendations and an im- plementation plan prior to the Board’s vote. The first Community In- formation Meeting will take place on Jan. 20 at Travis High School (11111 Harlem Road, Richmond, 77406). The Jan. 21 meeting will be held at Elkins High School (7007 Knight’s Court, Missouri City, 77459). Both meetings will begin at 7 p.m. Efforts to better align high school feeder patterns and es- tablish attendance boundaries began in August of 2014, when the FBISD Board of Trustees adopted policy that defined the purpose of establishing atten- dance areas. Over the last several months, the administration’s work has been guided by that policy, as well as enrollment projections from an independent demo- graphics firm and with consid- eration of feedback from the community. Updated projections from Population and Survey Ana- lysts, or PASA, were consid- ered as the District developed its final recommendations. In addition to aligning feeder patterns, the District is also rec- ommending the establishment of attendance boundaries for Elementary Schools 46 and 47, which are scheduled to open in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Additional boundary recom- mendations included in the plan would align the District’s high school feeder patterns and alleviate overcrowding at sev- eral campuses. “This is the first time in FBISD history that the District has taken such comprehensive actions to update feeder pat- terns and boundaries District- wide,” said Dupre. “Our administration and Board began this difficult and complex task with the realiza- tion that it would be impossible to please everyone within the community, but I could not be more pleased and proud of the way our parents and commu- nity members joined together to help for the future of FBISD. We believe our recommenda- tion serves each student of Fort Bend ISD and with the annual review of enrollment projec- tions, the plan can stand the test of time.” During the fall, the admin- istration worked with consul- tant DeJONG-RICHTER to develop two attendance and boundary proposals, known as Scenarios A and B, and sought community feedback during four Community Dialogue Meetings and through online questionnaires. Information from the more than 18,000 completed surveys was consid- ered. The administration will be asking the Board of Trustees to approve policy on Jan. 26 that would guide the implementa- tion process for any current and future boundary changes. While attendance boundary changes would go into effect for elementary and middle school students, as well as stu- dents entering grade nine in 2015-2016, students who will enter grades ten through twelve in the fall would complete their studies at their current campus. New plan Based on discussion at the Jan. 12 meeting, the admin- istration will explore the fol- lowing scenarios that are not included in the current plan: •Consider moving the Lake- field, Lakes of Austin Park, and Lake Colony communi- ties from the Clements High School feeder pattern to the Elkins High School feeder pat- tern. This change was included in the original Scenario A. •Provide the Board a sce- nario in which the Lake Olym- pia community is rezoned from Lake Olympia Middle School to Quail Valley Middle School. •Consider the consolidation of the entire Woodstream com- munity at Colony Meadows Elementary School. Currently, a portion of the Woodstream community attends Colony Bend Elementary School. The administration will dis- cuss this information with the Board at a scheduled work ses- sion on Thursday, Jan. 22. A community feedback op- portunity will also be sched- uled at Goodman Elementary School regarding a proposed boundary change that was rec- ommended based on revised enrollment projections. This change was not includ- ed in prior scenarios provided to the community. PAINTED BUNTING. In the Jan. 14 edition of the Fort Bend Independent, the bird of the month photo was that of the Eastern Phoebe. I had the pleasure of meeting Photographer Margaret Sloan and got to do some bird shooting with her in her backyard sanctuary last year. Here is a photo of the Painted Bunting that I took last April during the Spring migration. This beautiful little male spent about a week at my backyard feeders and I was so excited to see him, I couldn’t believe that I actually had one here! I sure hope he remembers my feeders and returns this Spring. — JOHN PITTS FBISD re-organizes academies By SESHADRI KUMAR The First Colony Commu- nity Association has sued one of its residential members for fencing and installing a gate around landscape reserve, an easement that the association had given to the homeowners in the past. The homeowner has been maintaining the landscape as stipulated in the deed, but the lawsuit arose after the home- owner installed a fence and a gate and locked the front en- trance to the landscape, abut- ting the house. The association wants the homeowners Arthur J. Valentz and Lynn Valentz to remove the fence and gate around the land- scape reserve, that was given to the homeowners in 2000. The lawsuit filed in 2012 is continuing in the 268th District Court in Fort Bend County. Attorney Russell C. Jones is representing the homeowners, while Rick Butler, formerly of Butler & Hailey, now Roberts Markel,Butler and Hailey Law- firm, represents the association. The landscape easement does not authorize the home- owner to install the fence and locked gate, according to the association. The lawsuit has given rise to a new legal issue, namely the current FCCA, lacked jurisdic- tion because the easement was deeded by another FCCA. Defendants’ attorney Jones argued that the original FCCA lost its charter with the state of Texas which was originally established in 1982 as it was “involuntarily dissolved by the Secretary of State for failure to comply with applicable law.” Subsequently, the new FCCA filed for a new charter under the same old name in 1987. The second FCCA is not the same as the first FCCA, according to the defendants. The homeowners filed a mo- tion to dismiss the lawsuit stat- ing that the association had no standing and lacked jurisdic- tion. The association filed a response and the judge did not grant the motion for dismissal. The issue of whether the plaintiff is the proper Associa- tion to enforce the restrictive covenants has not yet been ruled upon. Even if the court determines that the plaintiff may enforce the restrictive cov- enants, there are a number of defenses largely created by the fact that the Association previ- ously granted a landscape ease- ment to the defendants, Jones says. In a partial ruling the court has held that the rear fence of the landscape is on the land owned by the Sweetwater Country Club and the associa- tion has no jurisdiction to en- force its deed restriction. Depositions are continuing regarding the front gate and lock. The defendants maintain that they are in full compliance with the landscape easement, and that they were given the author- ity to deal with the property in the original easement docu- ment. The Association did not re- tain any right under the ease- ment to approve subsequent landscaping, as long as it was in compliance with the easement, the defendants argued. Moreover, the restrictive covenants only provide for architectural review for resi- dential and commercial tracts, and specifically excluded “re- serves”, which is what this easement is, from the definition of those tracts of land which require architectural review, Jones said By law, the rights of a holder of an easement (in this case, the defendants) are superior to the rights of the holder of the sub- servient estate (in this case, the Association [if, in fact, the As- sociation is the proper party]. Among other issues, the easement document does not retain a right of access for the benefit of the Association. The law provides that the holder of the subservient estate may not interfere with the use of an easement by the holder of the easement. The front gate is currently locked. The defendants state that the landscape easement is available for use by First Col- ony residents for reasonable purposes. Such reasonable purposes in the past have included wed- ding photography and a memo- rial service. They even allow a representative of the plaintiff to come into the easement solely for the purpose of taking pic- tures to be used by the plaintiff in the lawsuit, Jones says. The only requirement is that the persons wishing to come upon the property make a re- quest to do so. Purposes which probably would not be recog- nized as appropriate would in- clude an individual who wishes to come on the property for the purpose of doing drugs, loiter- ing, crossing the property from the street to the golf course for the purpose of accessing the private property of the golf course. The year 2014 enters the history books as a year of extremes for theHouston housing market, as home sales volume and prices achievedrecord highs while inventory levels tumbled to record lows.

The frenzied real estate activity was primarily driven by the addi-tion of more than 125,000 jobs that attracted buyers and renters fromacross the U.S. and around the world between November 2013 andNovember 2014, according to the Texas Workforce Commission.

December single-family home sales increased 11.6 percent versusDecember 2013 while total property sales rose 11.0 percent. The latestmonthly report prepared by the Houston Association of Realtors (HAR)shows that contracts closed on 6,451 single-family homes, shrinkinginventory to a 2.5-months supply, the lowest level of all time. Onceagain, homes from $250,000 and above registered the highest sales vol-ume and accounted for the latest round of price appreciation.

"The Houston housing market experienced its best year on record in2014 and that is a reflection of the vitality of the local economy,” saidHAR Chair Nancy Furst with Berkshire Hathaway Home ServicesAnderson Properties. “We expect the pace of sales to normalize thisyear, which should finally enable inventory levels to grow, restoringbalance to the market."

The single-family home average price rose 6.6 percent year-over-year to $280,863 while the median price - the figure at which half ofthe homes sold for more and half sold for less - rose 11.2 percent to$209,590. Both figures represent historic highs for a December inHouston, however they did not top the all-time record prices (averageof $284,569 and median of $215,000) reached in June 2014.

December sales of all property types in Houston totaled 7,695, an11.0 percent increase over the same month last year. Total dollar vol-ume for properties sold in December soared 18.1 percent to $2.0 billionversus $1.8 billion a year earlier. For more information visit:HAR.com!

Notice of Public Hearing

Staff ord Municipal School District will hold a public hearing on the Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR) at the February 9, 2015 School Board meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Staff ord Municipal School District Administration Building in the Board-room, 1625 Staff ordshire, Staff ord, Texas 77477.

The Freedom of Informa-tion Act applies to certain fed-eral records, but it does not apply to Congress, accord-ing to the Offi ce of General Counsel for U.S. House of Representatives.

The legal opinion was re-ceived by Tomalea Bench who had sought certain infor-mation from U.S. Rep. Pete Olson, regarding his vote to elect Speaker John Boener.

“I write on behalf of the Honorable Pete Olson, U.S. Representative for the 22nd congressional district of Tex-as, in response to your Janu-ary 6, 2015 correspondence requesting, “consistent with

the Freedom of Information Act” “a tally of the contacts received by all of Rep. Ol-son’s offi ces regarding the Speaker vote held on January 6, 2015.”

“ You also state that your request includes a tally of all calls, faxes, emails, and other media format and whom the constitution desired Mr. Ol-son to vote for.

“While the Freedom of Information Act (“FOIA”) provides a statutory right of access to certain federal government records, that Act does not apply to Congress. Congress and its Members were excluded from the defi -

nition of “agency” because of separation of powers con-cerns, as well as their constitu-tional immunity from outside questioning about, and inter-ference with, their legislative activities.

“Additionally, though you did not cite to it, the Texas Public Information Act does not apply to federal offi cers such as Congressman Olson.

Please be advised that the Texas Public Information Act applies only to state and local offi ces and agencies. Accord-ingly, to the extent any of the requested information or re-cords exist, they will not be provided,” Eleni M. Roumel Assistant Counsel, wrote in the letter.

Reacting to this letter, Bench said: “I must admit that I did not realize the FOIA only applied to the Executive branch of the government, but I fi nd it absolutely appalling that a member of Congress hides behind an assistant legal

counsel to avoid telling con-stituents that he voted against the wishes of his constituents. There is no security breach or personal information breach to release data like this: X contacts received, 30% of X supported a vote for Boehner, 35% of X wanted Gohmert and 35% of X wanted Donald Duck. If the congressman’s vote for Boehner was support-ed by the tally of contacts re-ceived, then I am sure I would have received the data.

Another reader wrote:“Do you ever wonder how

many things the Congresses have passed that specifi cally excluded Congress from hav-ing to comply?

“Seems like there are a heck of a lot of them. And I remember reading from some historical account that one of the founding principles of this country was that every offi cial would have to follow the laws applicable to every citizen.”

Congress excluded from Freedom of Information Act, says Counsel

By BARBARA FULENWIDERStafford councilmen and

the mayor seem to be bringing up just about every possible problem they can think of in regard to the redevelopment of the Texas Instruments property so that the developers and city get it right.

Tuesday, Jan. 14, was coun-cil’s third meeting to discuss an ordinance that when passed will be called MU-2-StreetLevel.

StreetLevel is the develop-ment company that bought Texas Instruments 191.756 acres of prime property. When the redevelopment is done it will transform the looks, feel and size of Stafford and elevate the image and identity of the city. It will also provide a wide variety of retail and upscale housing that could attract as many as 4,000 more residents who could sway city elections.

City fathers see the redevel-opment as a huge opportunity to grow and transform their town and is why they are devoting hours of discussion to getting the redevelopment right.

On Jan. 21 they held their fourth meeting to discuss the project and there will likely be more meetings scheduled before everyone is totally satis-fi ed with the fi nal plans and the ordinance is passed.

Brian Murphy, developer with StreetLevel Investments, told council at their Jan. 14 meeting he “feels like it’s really coming together.” He said the new development will address the wants and needs of millen-nials and boomers. “We want to add the project that will be transformational for Stafford. We want to add the next qual-ity piece.

“We’re taking a suburban site and making it more urban and that’s complicated,” Murphy said. “We have designed a very ambitious plan” that includes everything – housing, hotels, offi ce space, restaurants, retail, trails, green space, a main square, parking garages, private garages, etc.

Murphy went on to say that he was at council’s special meeting to make concessions and compromises that the city sees as problems. He then intro-duced his cohort, Dan Watson, who is also a developer with StreetLevel Investments, and in turn introduced Eric Overton, a multi-family/residential devel-oper with JLB Partners LLC.

Overton told council there will be four or five separate, fully gated residential commu-nities with security and emer-gency vehicles will have full access. He said the proposed

1,800 units will average be-tween $900 to $2,500 a month and go from 650 square feet to 1,600 square feet. “These are upper end apartments” that he said will likely have strong ap-peal to millennials.

He said there will be an eight-foot high masonry wall between industrial and residential and that industrial will provide jobs and workers who will likely rent the “upper end” apartments because of their proximity to work. “We will try to have units available for the different economic levels.”

Overton said his company wants to put the architectural renderings of the living units his company envisions together with the architecture proposed by StreetLevel for the buildings to make sure it is complemen-tary.

He also told council that those who lease the lofts will be able to park their car in a fi ve-story garage in the middle of the building. Most apartments will be leased but some may be for sale. The current plans are to lease all lofts. Watson with StreetLevel said, “We have aspired to have a mix. If the market demands buying over leasing…we’d love to have a variety of residential units because it will drive more busi-

ness for the overall project.”Councilman Cecil Willis

asked if the residential com-plex would be controlled by one entity or multiple entities and how the number of apart-ments proposed went from 900 to 1,800. “Would the 60-acre residential tract in the center of the property be bought by JLB?” he asked.

Overton said, “Right now our intention is to build and op-erate the entire thing.” He also said today’s standard is 30 units to an acre so when the acreage for the residences was increased by StreetLevel, that increased the number of units. Acreage was increased because Street-Level learned there wouldn’t be enough people living in the development to support on-site retail and stores likely to locate nearby.

“Our intent was always to present this range of residential units.” He went on to say the earliest plan showed 40 to 50 acres on the Murphy Road side of the property was designated for light industrial with com-mercial fronting on U.S. 59. The commercial acreage has also been increased.

Overton noted that three of the apartment buildings will have tuck under garages in the back of the building that are pri-

vate and have a door. “It offers more of a single family feeling. A second car can be parked in front of the garage door. This is an amenity that we see as very popular. Forty percent of people will have a garage and tandem parking behind it. Overflow parking would be on the street.”

Then the questions and an-swers turned to matters of safety, with Willis leading the way.

“What innovative things are y’all doing to protect the people who live in those four-story structures?” he asked. Overton said all the buildings would have total access to emergency vehicles and JLB will meet all the fi re department’s rules and regulations

Councilman Robert Sorbet then asked if JLB will just meet the minimum standards or go above and beyond on safety. Overton replied that in some cases they will go beyond the minimum and in other cases they won’t. “We are trying to add insulation between the

fl oors to help reduce noise and improve fi re protection.” Spac-ing the buildings also helps keep fi re from spreading, he said.

When Willis asked if JLB was not only planning to build 1,800 apartment units but also 600 lofts, Overton said, “There’s no business arrangement yet to do lofts.” Right now, he said, his company is only dealing with the 1,800 units.

Councilman A.J. Honore asked if charging stations were going to be provided for electric cars. Overton said they will have plug ins for electric cars available in the community and will respond to that market.

It was pointed out that pro-jected visitors to the outlet mall on any given day will be any-where from 2,000 to 46,000 and that 240,000 vehicles pass that property on U.S. 59 every day.Data also shows that 18,000 cars use West Airport daily and 40,000 vehicles travel MurphyRoad.

By CAROLYN BOWDENA RICH HISTORY: This

property was noted for its col-orful and courageous owners. It became the largest cotton and sugar plantation in Texas and later, a retreat for Catho-lic priests and nuns. The bot-tom land was fi lled with trees and stretched approximately 3 miles on either side of the Brazos River. Bears and pan-thers ruled the woods and buf-falo roamed the prairie. The property of the Sienna Plan-tation was not close to the three aggressive Indian tribes, therefore, the European set-tlers had very little in the way of Indian trouble here.

Settlers, as they sought to tame and clear the land, fought diseases and suffered through severe, inclement weather. Having good health was pre-cious. Even when traveling, excessive exposure could be deadly, causing a short illness with a fatal congestive fever. A Fort Bend historian and former Texas Ranger said: “Those early settlers were ei-ther tough or they died. But, those that lived prospered.”

A NEW IMMIGRANT ARRIVES in 1840: Jona-than Dawson Waters, a strong willed and intelligent planter from South Carolina found this land, the climate, and a rich soil, “untouched by a plow”, ideal for growing crops. The Waters Plantation

became the largest and most successful cotton and sugar plantation in Texas. The Cen-sus in 1860 listed Waters as the richest man in Fort Bend County. He had built an em-pire few would equal. Being president of a railroad and being its major stockholder he had his own rail car for transportation pulled by an engine named after him. His mansion on the river rivaled the stately mansions of New Orleans and Virginia. He maintained a home in Galves-ton and in Houston so as to be comfortable while doing busi-ness in those two cities.

WATERS WAS NOT A MAN TO THREATEN: For example, one of his neighbors who was regarded as a violent man, threatened to kill Waters the next time they met. Upon

hearing this, Waters went with several of his friends to the house of his neighbor and fi nding his neighbor unarmed and offering no resistance, Waters killed him. The judi-cial system brought no charge against Waters, who was a man known to be of good character, citing the deadly nature of the threats by his neighbor justifi ed Waters’ ac-tions.

THE THREE WIVES OF WATERS: Three months af-ter Waters’ fi rst wife died, he obtained a marriage license to wed the daughter of a friend who lived on Oyster Creek just north of the plantation. Because the two men were good friends, there was no disapproval by family or any-one in the community of this sudden wedding so soon after the fi rst wife’s death.

Waters was said to be madly in love with his second wife. Although extremely jealous, his devotion to her was leg-end. She was much younger than Waters but could barely match his energy and en-thusiasm. Waters held gala balls at their mansion on the river where dignitaries from major cities, such as Hous-ton and Galveston mayors, senators, bankers and railroad owners would attend. Balls at harvest time were known to last as long as three days. This would allow his second

The land called Sienna Plantation -I

wife to preside in elegant at-tire, charming all the guests. There were many occasions of dancing, politicians making speeches and men and women showing off their skills with horses.

THEN HIS WIFE BE-CAME ILL: Desperate, Wa-ters moved her to their house in Galveston where the best doctors could be summoned but there was little they could do. She died at the young age of 30 and was buried in the pecan orchard behind the mansion. A twelve foot white marble spire marks her grave site.

Waters then married a third time to the sister of his second wife who was a widow with three children. Since Waters had no children, he adopted her children, two sons and a daughter.

TROUBLE LOOMED – THE CIVIL WAR BEGAN: Waters believed in the cause of the South, donating $100,000 to the Confederacy, providing supplies and shelter for the troops and investing in bonds to fi nance the war effort. Plan-tations in the Old South and in Texas suffered as a result of the War between the States and the Waters Plantation was no exception. With slave la-bor no longer available and the crash in sugar prices just after the War, Waters, who was by that time in poor health, saw his fortune decline rapidly and died in 1872.

“We will not wait any lon-ger…give us the vote!” are fa-mous quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. circa 1965. This movie beautifully documents the civil rights struggle to gain the right to vote for “Negroes” and all other minorities who had been denied the basic right to cast a ballot. Getting registered was the problem: “How many county judges in Alabama? Now, name them.”

Dr. King was admirably played by David Oyelowo. Was his performance Oscar-worthy?

Apparently not as Oyelowo was “snubbed” by the Academy as he was not nominated for Best Ac-tor. There has been criticism by some television commentators and social media that “Selma” was grossly overlooked since it only received two nominations. Much of the disappointment is focused on the absence of Direc-tor Ava DuVernay and Oyelowo to garner a nomination.

However, “Selma” was nomi-nated for Best Motion Picture and for Best Achievement in Music by John Legend and

Common. Their song “Glory” is magnifi cent and my top choice for the Oscar. I’m a huge fan of Common’s music and his portrayal of Elam Ferguson in AMC’s Hell on Wheels. He played James Bevel in “Selma” and was one of the members of MLK’s inner circle.

Screenwriter Paul Webb at-tempted to tell a story of enor-mous historical signifi cance in the history of the United States. His writing captured the atmo-sphere of deep-rooted fear and prejudice and an awareness by

the civil rights workers and lead-ers that they faced death and brutality on a daily basis. Many died.

Accordingly, this movie is more of a documentary than a fi lm designed to entertain the masses. The Civil Rights Move-ment of 1965 outside the town of Selma, Alabama, was serious, intense, and dangerous. The brave folks in this fi lm marched across the bridge, as they ap-proached the heavily armed po-lice of Selma, with justifi ed fear in their hearts and a reality that

they might die for the cause. The right to vote. Bravo Direc-tor DuVernay. Was her direc-tion Oscar-worthy? Probably not. Is the story momentous and worthy of my time? Absolutely. Will “Selma” win Best Motion Picture? Probably not.

Can Oprah act? Yes, she can; her portrayal of Annie Lee Coo-per is memorable. When Annie Lee is hatefully turned away at the courthouse as she tries to register to vote, I was moved. Thank you, Oprah. Can Tom

Wilkinson act? Yes, he can. But his part as LBJ was poorly writ-ten and possibly historically in-accurate.

“Selma” is one of those mov-ies that vividly conveys a mes-sage about historical events while willingly sacrifi cing some of its cache by not pandering to the lowest common denomina-tor of the entertainment world. That makes “Selma” important; not great. Rock ‘n Roll.

By BARBARA FULENWIDERFor 2015 the Toyota Sienna

made room to comfortably transport eight people and it got new styling. The fam-ily van also got more safety, convenience and multi-media features and all-wheel drive is offered as an option.

The one new Sienna feature for 2015 that will make par-ents heard is the new driver easy speak option that carries their voice to back seat pas-sengers via the audio system’s rear speakers.

The 2015 Toyota Sienna also got updated style inside and out. Exterior styling re-fi nements include a revised front grille, and new slim-mer headlights for the SE and Limited grades. New LED daytime running lamps (DRLs), standard for the SE and Limited, give the Sienna a more aggressive appearance. All grades except the SE get redesigned taillight clusters,

too. The Sienna is powered by

a 266-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 teamed with a six-speed automatic transmission. With the standard tow prep pack-age, the Sienna can tow up to 3,500-pounds.

For securing child seats, there’s an additional LATCH location available in the third row seat, for a total of four locations. The front passen-ger seat has a new selectable force-limiting seatbelt to help enhance safety for a greater variety of physiques.

In the 2015 Sienna, a new center console and dash de-sign groups the air condition-ing, shifter and multimedia controls into a single unifi ed panel. A new Tri-Sync switch for the air conditioning lets the driver more easily control the three climate zones. Sien-na’s new three-spoke heated steering wheel is available in leather.

The new available pushbut-ton driver’s seat center arm-rest in the 2015 Sienna can be adjusted to many positions and remembers the last posi-tion after the armrest has been stowed.

Getting information about the vehicle while you drive is provided by a new multi-information display in the in-strument panel. There’s a base 3.5-inch dot-matrix LCD ver-sion or a 4.2-inch color TFT (thin fi lm transistor) display on up-level models. With ei-ther, you can toggle to audio controls using the four-way switch on the steering wheel. The TFT version is linked to the multi-media system and can also display navigation system information.

The 2015 Sienna brings the sound of music more conve-niently through the newly upgraded Display Audio En-tune multimedia system with subscription-free App Suite

on most grades. You can launch Entune apps by press-ing a switch on the steering wheel and speaking the name of the app, then using voice commands to operate it. The audio unit can download new Entune apps as they’re devel-oped, including voice recogni-tion components.

Toyota brings rear seat pas-sengers entertainment with a dual view entertainment cen-ter, which uses two viewable displays within a 16.4-inch widescreen image.

New for 2015 are Blu-Ray capability, an HDMI input, and an SDXC card reader that can play 10 different audio

and video formats. The 2015 Sienna is avail-

able in fi ve grades: L, LE, SE, XLE and Limited. All-wheel-drive is available on LE, XLE and Limited models.

The Toyota Sienna offers a choice between seven- and eight-passenger confi gura-tions. With the third-row seat stowed and the second-row seat removed, it passes the plywood test by providing up to 150 cubic feet of space.

On eight-passenger models, the second row center seat can be removed and stowed in the left side of the rear-storage area, leaving a cupholder and storage tray between the two

remaining seats. The tip up and long slide feature lets you slide the seats forward and back on extended rails, adjust-ing room as needed for pas-sengers or cargo. Sliding the second-row seats all the way to the rear creates a walk-in aisle.

The standard Toyota safety system equips the Sienna with anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, enhanced vehicle sta-bility control, traction control and smart stop technology.

The available blind spot monitor with rear cross traffi c alert is standard on SE, XLE and Limited grades. A pre-col-lision system is available on the Limited grade, as is vehi-cle dynamics integrated man-agement, which coordinates brake control with engine out-put and steering inputs.

The Toyota Sienna is most comfortable, provides plenty of space, has more than ad-equate power and delivers a smooth, quiet ride.

The base MSRP for the new Sienna starts at $28,600 and tops out at $46,150 for the Sienna Limited Premium all-wheel-drive (AWD).
