Methodist Orthopaedic Spe-cialists of Texas (MOST) offer their annual sports physicals for Fort Bend and Alief independent school districts’ middle school and high school athletes.

MOST has been associated with these school districts for more than 15 years as team phy-sicians.

University Interscholastic League (UIL) requires all high school athletes, from football and softball to soccer and basketball, to undergo and pass a physical examination prior to participat-ing in sports.

Physical evaluations include testing height, weight, vision, blood pressure, pulse, ears, nose, throat, heart, lungs, abdomen, spine and all joints in the upper and lower body.

Physicians discuss the athletes’ medical history and consult with them and their parents if further evaluation is necessary prior to releasing them to participate in sports.

“We truly enjoy working with the schools in Fort Bend County,” said Dr. Vincent Phan, orthopedic surgeon and team physician.

“I grew up here and actually went to Elsik High School, so it is an honor to come back and support the players. We look forward to continuing to support these school districts in the 2009-10 school year.”

Performing physical examina-tions is just part of being the team physician.

This group of physicians gen-erously donates proceeds that are generated from the physical ex-

aminations back to the school’s athletic training programs.

“It is always reassuring to know that the physicians will be there for the athletes whether it is physicals before season, injury during the game or a visit to their offi ce after the game,” said Bran-don Roberts, athletic trainer at Travis High School.

As a matter of fact, MOST has generously donated more than $75,000 back to local schools in the last fi ve years.

Athletic trainers use this money to purchase the necessary equipment they need for the up-coming school year above what their budget allows.

“Partnering with this physician group has allowed me the ability to buy better rehab equipment for those students who get hurt

on the fi eld,” said June Tomlin, trainer at Elkins High School.

MOST physicians support coaches, athletic trainers and players throughout the school year, according to Randy Cun-ningham, head coach at Travis High School.

“With the help of these physi-cians, we can rest assured that our athletes are in good hands and are receiving the care they need and deserve,” Cunningham said.

Other local high schools have used the money donated from MOST for things such as Under Armour game shirts and sports medicine practice t-shirts for stu-dent trainers, braces for the ath-letes, winter jackets for student trainers, rehab equipment, team plaques and student trainer fi eld trips.

“It is a privilege to work hands on with an exceptional group of athletic trainers and coaches. I thoroughly enjoy the relationship that we have developed with the FBISD staff and look forward to working together in the future,” said Dr. Timothy Sitter, M.D.

Methodist Orthopaedic Spe-cialists of Texas (MOST) is one of the largest groups of board-certifi ed and fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons in Fort Bend County, with a focus on general orthopedic surgery and sub-spe-cialties such as sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery, total joint replacements, cartilage trans-plants, diseases and deformities of the spine and treatment of hand, upper extremity, foot and ankle problems.

MOST’s relationship with Methodist Sugar Land Hospital facilitates access to the area’s most advanced diagnostic equip-ment, including the most power-ful magnetic resonance imaging machines available.

In addition, Methodist Sugar Land Hospital maintains a com-prehensive physical therapy facil-ity, including state-of-the-art oc-cupational and aquatic therapy, in the same building as the MOST’s offi ces.

To schedule an appointment, or to learn more about the facility and its physicians, call 281-494-MOST. To schedule physical therapy, call 281-340-6450.

Musings: Ideas for standing out

Scanlan

By JANICE SCANLANNo one thing can make a

community stand out. It’s the entire community putting its best foot forward and tak-ing steps that keep adding up until they start multiply-ing. There’s a combination of business, government and residents all working togeth-er.

So I decided to ask some people from all over town who are active in homeown-ers’ associations, civic en-deavors and who stay pro-ductively involved, what might make Missouri City stand out?

I actually got more quality feedback than there’s room. So I’ll save some for another column.

Floyd Emery of the Mis-souri City Future Group stressed that Missouri City is a safe place to work, live and play. He’d advertise the out-standing performance statis-tics of Police and Fire Depart-ment as well as continue the infl ux of new businesses for shopping, entertainment and dining.

Finally, Floyd would pub-licize the recreational oppor-tunities offered throughout Missouri City with an em-phasis on fi rst class facilities with broad recreational offer-ings including golf, tennis, basketball, skating, fi tness, organized sports and social opportunities for all ages.

Missouri City Parks Board Member Anthony Maroulis’

comments really boiled down to thinking bigger, partnering more.

In the economic develop-ment specter, he emphasized better working with Stafford and Sugar Land to promote our entire area’s economic endeavor, while fi nding nich-es that make Missouri City distinctive.

For example, with Lakev-iew Development being a “green building” and LEEDs certifi ed center . . . stressing alternative energy and new economy industries such as offi ce space Exxon Mobil is planning for energy alterna-tive projects.

Tout our location and ac-cessibility to draw workforce and talent from throughout the Greater Houston area in “smart industries” with pro-fessional jobs and higher pro-fi le employers.

Anthony is painfully aware

that kids across America are not exercising enough, and Texas is one of the states that ranks high in this area.

Anthony believes Fort Bend needs to take a very hard look at this. Even more importantly, Missouri City should take a leadership role in this and focus on promot-ing better health and fi tness for kids.

They can do so by offering amenities for all ages. Like skate parks, BMX parks, ob-stacle courses, golf, batting cages and we really need a swim program.

In that vein, he’d place more emphasis on the Fort Bend YMCA. Anthony would focus on how to make the Fort Bend YMCA truly The Fort Bend YMCA by broad-ening participation beyond Missouri City. He would ask the county, surrounding cit-ies, civic groups and others for their support.

We need to help the YMCA expand their facility and pro-grams so that they can reach out to the youth of Fort Bend. Let’s support the YMCA with more resources to stand out and provide another recreation magnet to Missouri City.

Our next topic is commu-nity identity, appearance and maintenance.

This is everybody’s job: business, city, homeowners and HOAs. Besides keeping property in tiptop shape, also understanding how landscap-ing and pedestrian access can

By RUSSELL C. JONESCommunication with con-

stituents is a critical part of being an effective local elect-ed offi cial. We are always looking for ways to let resi-dents know what is going on, why we are doing what we are doing, and how they can get more information on the top-ics which interest them.

In Sugar Land, the city mails a monthly newsletter to each resident, broadcasts a con-stant stream of information on SLTV (Comcast Channel 16), offers a comprehensive web-site (www.sugarlandtx.gov), issues press releases to the local media daily, publishes a monthly magazine for seniors and continuously searches for new means of communicating with residents.

Several years ago, the City Council instituted a new pro-gram of town hall meetings, whereby each district council member would have the op-portunity to address residents in his district, advise them of how their tax dollars were being spent, and give them another opportunity to ask questions about their city gov-ernment. From the beginning, members of the City Council believed that this would be an ideal means of communicat-ing, not just from the city to the residents, but also from the residents back to their elected offi cials. Unfortunately, turn-out at these meetings has tra-ditionally been sparse.

There is a theory which suggests that voter apathy is indicative of satisfaction with government. That is, elected offi cials only hear from their constituents if they are unhap-py with what the government is doing for them, or in some

cases, to them. If elected offi -cials don’t hear anything, then they can assume that they are pursuing the correct course of action.

This year, turnout at the town hall meetings was again disappointing. That is, few residents showed up. If the theory of voter apathy is cor-rect, residents of Sugar Land are pleased with city govern-ment. Somehow, however, that conclusion just doesn’t satisfy.

Most elected offi cials at the local level want to hear from their constituents, if only to ratify the conclusion that resi-dents are, indeed, satisfi ed with the services being provided by government. Participation in government by all citizens is a critical part of our democracy. Let your local representatives know what you think. It will have a greater infl uence than you can imagine.

Prizes for PeaceWhen he established his

prize, Alfred Nobel had in mind a reward for action taken. Nowhere in the guide-

lines which he established for the award of his prize did he suggest that it should be used as a political tool on the world stage. As this year’s award re-minds us, that is exactly what the prize has become.

For the third time in eight years, Nobel’s prize has been used to rebuke the policies and philosophy of the Bush administration in the United States. As it made its award to an individual whose only accomplishment had been ad-vocacy for change from the Bush program, the Norwe-gian committee congratulated itself on identifying a kindred spirit who shares the “values” of a “majority” of countries around the world.

Never mind that the major-ity of countries have, for the past century or more, stal-wartly retained values which have resulted in their trailing the United States in econom-ic development, health care, human rights, standards of living and opportunities for self-improvement, it was im-portant to the committee that the United States had lowered its values to the level of other countries.

Without a doubt, this year’s award says more about the values of the committee itself and a majority of countries around the world than it says about the noble purpose origi-nally proposed by Nobel.

Notice of Tax Revenue Increase

The Fort Bend County Drainage conducted public hearings on October 2, 2009 and October 6, 2009 on a proposal to increase the total tax revenues of the Fort Bend County Drainage from properties on the tax roll in the preceding year by 28.54 percent.

The total tax revenue raised last year at last year’s tax rate of $0.01600 for each $100 of taxable value was $6,080,901.

The total tax revenue proposed to be raised this year at the proposed tax rate of $0.02076 for each $100 of taxable value, excluding tax revenue to be raised from new property added to the tax roll this year, is $7,760,786.

The total tax revenue proposed to be raised this year at the proposed tax rate of $0.02076 for each $100 of taxable value, including tax revenue to be raised from new property added to the tax roll this year, is $8,081,996.

The Board of Directors of Fort Bend County Drainage is scheduled to vote on the tax rate that will result in that tax increase at a public meeting to be held on October 20, 2009 at Commissioners Court Room, William B. Travis Bldg., 309 Fourth Street, Richmond, Texas 77469 at 1:00 pm.

By JAMES IVES The Tea Party Movement

is a growing factor on the American political landscape.

Across the nation, in small towns and in the mighty ur-ban centers, the ranks of a de-termined and restless people grow daily.

What is it that causes Amer-icans of all walks to come to-gether, as if by instinct, and cry out as one for the return of their America?

As the President of the Fort Bend Tea Party in Sugar Land, I have had much opportunity to speak with fellow members of this vast phenomenon.

We are not “activists” or “joiners” in the old, outdated sense; in fact we are plain

Citizens. We are as much grown

from the native soil as we are newly arrived; each of us determined that the golden fi elds of Opportunity and the Promise of the Pursuit of Happiness should still exist for all to reach out for and to achieve.

These legions are restless because for too long has the gleam been fading from the Great Seal of our land.

We are fearful that our grand nation is fading into a grayer, less marvelous place, diluting the dreams of our forefathers and burying the fl ickering fl ame of the Re-public under layers of bureau-cracy, internationalism and

oppression.Across the land, we Citi-

zens are determined to stand against this tide, uniting to take hold of the levers of defi -ance that the Founders wrote into our sacred Constitution, and to exhaust every peace-ful means to protect, preserve and restore the true America.

As Citizens of a free Re-public, it is our duty to stand watch over our liberties, and those of our neighbors, so stand with us in the Fort Bend Tea Party, and help us to hold our elected offi cials to the word of law and to the tenets of responsible leadership.

Commentary

The Young Conservatives of Texas has announced its opposition to Proposition 4, in the proposed Constitutional amendments, a measure that would create a constitution-ally dedicated fund called the National Research University Fund (NRUF).

“Most of YCT’s members are students at public univer-sities across the state, and we have seen how the focus on research in higher education not only harms the quality of education students receive but also infl ates the cost of their tuition,” explains Tony McDonald, Vice Chairman of Legislative Affairs.

Proposition 4, if passed, will expand the role of gov-ernment where government isn’t needed.

The private market has al-ready shown that it can take care of our nation’s research needs. Research performed under the free market is also managed more effi ciently, studies issues that can impact society in a benefi cial way, and isn’t subsidized by Texas taxpayers and students.

“Texas Universities need to be reminded that the students are the customers, not the fac-ulty. Texans would be much better off if research were handled by the private sector. Profi ts and the drive to inno-vate in the market are a much better catalyst for sound and useful research than the self-promotion of academics,” as-serts McDonald.

As of 2007, Texas univer-sities spent about $9 billion

on scientifi c research that has generated a mere $8.3 million a year in income, a rate of re-turn of less than one-tenth of 1 percent (.09 percent). Re-search suggests that had these funds instead been invested conservatively, earning 5 per-cent a year, the return would have been enough to provide a four-year college degree to more than 50,000 additional Texans a year.

“We need to remind Texas Universities that they were created to be, fi rst-and-fore-most, teaching institutions,” adds McDonald.

“In recent years, so-called ‘Tier-one Research Universi-ties’ have largely fallen away from that rightful mission of educating Texas students.”

In the 26-year history of Clements High School, the Stars Dance Team has only had a handful of dance direc-tors. This year Clements is proud to announce the arrival of the Fort Bend dynamic duo, Chelsea Harrison, Di-rector, and Michelle Barth, Assistant Director. Each day they bring an energy and en-thusiasm to the dance room which has been infectious to the girls. “I tell the girls LLD, which means, live, love, dance,” says Harrison.

Newly engaged Chelsea Harrison lives by that stan-dard. She was born and raised in Sugar Land, at-tended Austin High School, and was a member of the Austin Angels Dance Team. She then went to Texas State University where she re-ceived a Bachelor of Science in Dance. Upon graduation Chelsea came home to fulfi ll her student teaching require-ments at CHS in 07-08, be-fore accepting the assistant dance/theater director posi-tion at Travis High School in ’08-’09. When the dance director position came open at Clements, a three= week interviewing process began. Harrison became the clear de-cision. But who would be her new assistant director?

Enter Michelle Barth. Also

educated in the Fort Bend School District, Barth was the top offi cer with the Dulles Dolls in high school. She re-ceived a Bachelor degree in Dance from the University of Texas, then traveled with a competition dance conven-tion, and taught classes at a local dance studio. “Striving for excellence is a daily en-deavor,” believes Barth. This attitude and experience land-

ed her the job. The Stars Dance Team of

Clements High School is on their game with the leadership from these two outstanding women. So if you hear a so-prano voice at Clements shout out to the Stars Dance Team, “Bring home the bacon!”, you will know that Chelsea Har-rison, along with Michelle Barth, are back home in Fort Bend dancing for joy.

for specifi c cancers. In addi-tion to funding research, the American Cancer Society also provides free educational programs and various support services for cancer patients and survivors.

“I feel this event is already a success considering the level of enthusiastic support we’ve received from our sponsors, donors and volunteers,” said KK West, who is chairing the event with husband Scott West. “Unfortunately, we all know someone who has suf-fered from cancer and it’s heart-warming to see so many come together in support of the American Cancer Society. It’s going to be a great eve-ning.”

By BARBARA FULENWIDERToyota’s new 2.7-liter in-

line four-cylinder engine on its Highlander mid-size sport utility vehicle provides 20 miles to the gallon in the city and 27 on the highway for an average of 22 mpg com-bined.

It makes 187 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,100 rpm on regular oc-tane fuel. The four banger is also not as noisy as a V6 and there’s little to no vibration.

The motor has a broad torque curve, which provides enhanced fuel effi ciency, lower emissions and a strong response at all speeds.

This new Toyota engine is mated to an all-new six speed electronically controlled au-tomatic overdrive transmis-sion with intelligence that is one of the lightest and most compact in its class, accord-ing to Toyota. It is smooth shifting and acceleration is amazing quick for a four-cylinder.

Internal preliminary 0-60 miles per hour testing was timed at 9.7 seconds, which

is almost one second quicker than the average four-cylin-der mid-size SUV, according to Toyota. When the Toyota Highlander with the four-cylinder engine is equipped with a tow package, it can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

The new engine is stan-dard on the Highlander grade two-wheel drive mod-el with two rows of seats. This four-door model retails for $25,705 and with options on the test drive, came in at $28,534.

The options included a convenience package of roof rails and tonneau cover, anti-theft alarm system with engine immobilizer, manual rear A/C system, rear vents for second and third row seat package with fold fl at into fl oor capability and holding headrests, towing package, tow hitch with wiring har-ness and 3 row seating.

Standard features on the Toyota Highlander include A/C, an AM/FM/CD audio sys-tem with six speakers, front seats with height adjustable active head rests and eight-

way adjustable driver’s seat, power door locks and win-dows, cruise control, multi-function keyless entry, UV re-duction windshield and rear privacy glass, digital clock, dual sun visors with sliding extensions, illuminated entry system, manual tilt and tele-scopic steering wheel, full size spare time, scheduled maintenance indicator light, hill start assist control, front wheel drive with indepen-dent suspension, fog lamps, 40/20/40 split second row seat and 17-inch six-spoke al-loy wheels.

With the new four-cylinder engine, Highlander will be the only mid-size SUV in the current market to off er three powerplants.

The 3.5-liter Highlander V6 is available in two and full time four-wheel drive. There’s also the full-time 4-WD-i Highlander Hybrid with a V6 motor and front and rear electric motors.

Since the Highlander was fi rst launched in 2001 it con-tinues to be a big seller for Toyota, thanks to its innova-tion, refi nement and com-fort.

The Highlander is pure Toyota and still setting the bar for other vehicle manu-facturers regarding quality

and comfort. It’s roomy and a true pleasure to ride and drive.

I’ve had a bad day. Let me take a deep breath so I can continue.

First of all, as I was walk-ing up the stairs in Theatre #17 (one of the big ones), it was very dark and I was head-ing for one of the seats near the aisle as I have done a mil-lion times and I plopped my big self down and something went terribly wrong.

I fell down. Oh, come on, Larry H., you don’t mean that you actually hit the deck?

Fell like a sack of potatoes. Did you spill anything? Glad you asked: nary a drop of Mr. Pibb and only about 10 ker-nels of corn.

Have you ever seen some-one slip and fall and then pop up in a nanosecond to make it look like they really didn’t just fall but everyone knows they did fall but the person that fell is so embarrassed that they are in complete denial? Well, I’m that guy.

I immediately went two rows up and quickly sat down lest someone call out to me to see if I was okay. As I gently sat down, I noticed that I had a slight pain in my right arm and just a hint of throbbing in my left buttocks.

I immediately became an-gry at Loew’s AMC for hav-ing a faulty seat in a dark theatre and began plotting my revenge.

Just wait until this movie is over and the house lights are up and I’m going down to check out the scene of this tragedy.

Meanwhile, phase two of my painful afternoon began. This movie started on an up-beat note with nice opening credits and catchy music and it was downhill from there.

Vince Vaughn stars, co-wrote and produced this

movie so it’s all his fault. This is a ter-rible excuse for a movie.

The story: four couples go to an is-land retreat on the Peli-can Package so they can renew their relationships with their wives and girlfriend. Ja-son Bateman and his wife announce to the others that they are get-ting a divorce so they show a power point presentation to convince them to go as a group in or-der to qualify for cheaper rates and thus make it afford-able for everyone.

Notice I did not mention Bateman’s character’s name because I can not remem-ber it; oh yeah, it was Jason. Whoa Nellie, slow down with that originality.

When the couples arrive at the island, they learn that they are going to Eden West instead of East because the couples must participate in a rigid plan designed by Mar-cel (Jean Reno) who requires therapy, yoga, and getting up before sunrise. This Marcel is no Mr. Roarke (Ricardo Mon-talban) and where is Tattoo when you need him?

This is a miserable experi-ence for the Vince Vaughn-led couples and I disliked every one of them and hoped they

drown in the sea. Okay, that’s a little rash don’t you think? Not at all, I’m embarrassed that I didn’t walk out. I chuck-led a couple of times and my audience giggled maybe ten times but this movie blows.

True to my word, as the movie ended I sauntered down the two steps to check out the faulty seat.

Hey, something must be amiss; the chair and immedi-ate area seemed normal and undisturbed.

How can that be? Surely I didn’t just miss the seat and fall on my butt.

Rock ‘n Roll.
