The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) agreed to tempo-rary exemptions from the Disability Dis-crimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 for the rail industry. The decision follows an application by the Australasian Railways Association (ARA) for exemp-tion to the standards.

“Once more, our industry working to-gether through a well coordinated team has proven to be the most successful strategy to achieve the best outcomes for the rail industry and the community” said Mr. Bryan Nye, CEO of the ARA.

The rail industry understands the high importance these standards have in the community; therefore, its main goal was to identify which standards were impossi-ble to comply with and then seek alter-nate solutions to meet the intended stan-dards.

Representatives from major rail operators and manufacturers (Public Transport Au-thority WA, TransAdelaide, Connex, Vline, Yarra Trams, RailCorp, United Group, Bom-bardier EDI Rail, and Queensland Rail) formed a task-force that worked together for more than eight months to address the issue.

In addition to working on the technicality of the standards, the task-force also suggested the inclusion of new clauses where standards were imprecise or unclear.

The rail industry welcomes the decision of HREOC and looks forward to continue strengthening the communication between both parties and with the disabled commu-nity.

Standards Australia Technical Committee PK-003, Pallets

Standards Australia is in the process of reconstituting Committee PK-003, Pallets and the Australasian Railway Association (ARA) has been asked to nominate a rep-resentative to the Committee.

It is proposed that this committee would undertake the preparation of Standards in the field of pallets for general use and act as Australian technical advisory commit-tee in relation to parallel work proceed-ing within the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO).

The new Committee would meet periodi-cally in either Sydney or another state capi-tal, with meetings normally being of one or two days’ duration.

The ARA is seeking expressions of interest from professionals in the rail industry wish-ing to be part of the committee. All expres-sions of interest or queries should be for-warded to John Shalders, Code of Practice Manager at [email protected]
