24 June 2020 WEBINARCLIMATE-RESILIENT PLACES: Climate change in flood risk assessment webinarThe CIWEM Scottish branch is hosting an evening talk led by Elaine Fotheringham of SEPA, which will focus on delivering climate resilient places. In order to create successful places that will stand the test of time, land use planning decisions must be underpinned by the best evidence on potential future changes to our climate. In May 2019, SEPA published guidance on climate change allowances for flood risk assessment in land use planning, which sets out recommended allowances for climate change that can be applied to Flood Risk Assessments. SEPA estimates that 284,000 existing homes, businesses and services are at flood risk in Scotland, and it is predicted that under a business as usual scenario, climate change will increase the number of existing properties at risk by an additional 110,000 by 2080. The planning system therefore has a critical role to play in ensuring that new development does not add to this total. Our guidance helps planning authorities and others involved in the assessment of flood risk implement this approach. The presentation will also touch upon an update to the guidance to

take account of recent UK Climate Projections.

15 July 2020POSTPONED to 13 October 2020DELIVERING ON NET ZERO CARBON IN WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT: Progress and prospectsThe Point – Emirates, Old Trafford, Manchester, UKAt around five million tonnes (CO2-e), the UK water industry is the nation’s fourth largest emitter of greenhouse gases (GHG), representing just under 1% of the country’s total emissions. Recognising their significant contribution to the nation’s carbon footprint, the UK water industry in 2019 announced a target of net zero emissions by 2030 – twenty years ahead of the Government’s commitment for the country as a whole. Delivering on this commitment will require a root-and-branch review of capital and operational practices – with carbon impacts factored into all future decision making. This is additionally challenging when set against a context of increasing discharge constraints requiring more intensive wastewater treatment.

This follows the declaration of a climate emergency by the UK Parliament, the Scottish and Welsh Governments and three councils in Northern Ireland this year, and building on public interest and concern. We aim to keep water alongside the environment in these discussions, as water is where the Climate Emergency will be keenly felt.

14 – 17 September 20204TH REGIONAL IWA DIFFUSE POLLUTION CONFERENCEVienna, AustriaThe organisers emphasize to attract utility participation to discuss the impacts of diffuse pollution on drinking water services. With groundwater making up most of the Danube region’s drinking water supply, protecting it from pollution and over-abstraction is a top priority in the region, as years of overuse and agricultural pollution have put stress on essential groundwater bodies. The goal of Danube countries is to restore and maintain cleaner groundwater while managing its use for a more ecologically balanced and healthier water supply. Thus, the first day of the conference will be dedicated to an exchange on diffuse pollution in the context of the nitrate-directive and will involve representatives from institutions such as the European Commission, the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR), the Austrian Ministry for Sustainability and Tourism or the Austrian Federal Environmental Agency.

13 October 2020POSTPONED from 15 July 2020DELIVERING ON NET ZERO CARBON IN WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT: Progress and prospectsThe Point – Emirates, Old Trafford, Manchester, UKThis 1-day event will run alongside the European Waste Water Management Conference. At around five million tonnes (CO2-e), the UK water industry is the nation’s fourth largest emitter of greenhouse gases (GHG), representing just under 1% of the country’s total emissions.

24 – 25 November 2020EUROPEAN BIOSOLIDS & BIORESOURCES CONFERENCENewcastle-Upon-Tyne, UKNow that AMP7 is underway, the UK water industry is striving to meet Ofwat’s challenging final determinations, which will require it to do more with less: reducing customers’ bills whilst meeting tighter environmental constraints. With £200million being made available to stimulate innovation, we can expect to see a renewed focus on sludge processing and associated value chains – but we may also see a slew of initiatives prompted by COVID-19. What opportunities might there be to increase remote operability or to set up a future pandemic early warning system through strategic sludge testing? Alongside these operational challenges, the Environment Agency is taking a close look at regulation of both treatment and land application of biosolids – which could provide clarity around co-processing, even if compliance costs continue to impose a significant economic barrier. It remains to be seen whether closer regulatory alignment between the sludge and biowaste sectors leads to meaningful cross-sector collaboration on thorny issues such as microplastics.

25 November 2020 POSTPONED from 22 Apr 2020ENVIRONMENT CONFERENCE 2020: Climate Change and WaterBristol, UKThe conference will explore how we can put ‘urgency into the climate emergency’. In other words, given the scale of the challenges facing the water sector in the UK, are we doing enough, fast enough? An opening scene-setting session with keynote speakers aims to firstly look at what climate change might mean for water and the environment in the UK and internationally, and what needs to be done at a macro level. There will then be a series of presentations and a panel discussion exploring the relationship between companies and customers and the environment, and how we reconcile potentially competing interests. The afternoon will then open with a view from a water company and the Environment Agency, about working with nature-based solutions to improve resilience for water supplies, reduce flood risk and support healthy ecosystems. Tackling the climate emergency will need different approaches, and more concrete and steel isn’t necessarily the answer….

2021JANUARYJanuary 2021 (date tba)RESTORING ESTUARINE AND COASTAL HABITATS IN THE NORTH EAST ATLANTIC (REACH2)Royal Geographical Society, London, UKOur near shore seas and estuaries in the North East Atlantic have been transformed by human activity with significant losses of key habitats and the services they once provided. We have the capability to reverse some of these changes which has become crucial to adapting to the climate and ecological crisis that pose a major threat to our estuarine and coastal ecosystems.

17 – 21 January 202113TH IWA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON WATER RECLAMATION AND REUSEChennai, IndiaThe central theme of this proposed conference is ‘Water Reclamation and Reuse Advancement’. In order to boost water supply security, numerous water reuse and recycling projects have been already realized in developed as well as in developing countries. Nevertheless, water stress is increasing, mainly due to climate change, population growth and urbanization. As the current situation can be described as a race against time, it is essential to implement more projects in a shorter duration than in the past. This is possible by using and advancing the comprehensive knowledge and experience gained in the previous decades by implementation in all segments of water reuse (agricultural, municipal, industrial and potable reuse).

OCTOBER10 – 12 October 2021IWA CONFERENCE ON SUSTAINABLE SLUDGE MANAGEMENTBeijing, ChinaThe rapid expansion of China’s economy has been accompanied by many serious environmental issues, including degradation of water quality. To solve its water pollution problems, massive investments in water and wastewater treatment has been undertaken in China in the past decades. These new and upgraded treatment facilities have improved water quality, but have also lead to problematic levels of sludge generation, and this prospect is now being addressed with urgency. This sludge conference will focus on sustainable approaches in sludge management. The knowledge transfer from this conference could be of great importance to both China and the international community.
