Topic : Week 1: Moving from Physical to Online Classrooms

Concept: This session focused on how exactly online classes different from the physical classrooms.

Different elements and interactions between these elements were being discussed.

Question 1: Can you list the various interactions between these three components – learner, content and teacher, in a physical classroom?

Answer : Example of Teacher – Content Interaction

Teacher prepares himself for delivering lectures by referring various books (or by referring his own notes) / Manuals / Online sources (Internet) and bring all these together in form of PPT / PDF/ VIDEO (NORMAL OR ANIMATED). In some cases teacher uses chalk and board for better explanations which cannot be explained through PPT’s etc.

Example of Teacher – Learner Interaction

Teacher delivers the content which he has prepared in the class. He makes sure that learner has understood the concepts by asking questions or he may give them assignments. The interactions with the learners in form of doubts / clarifications / answers will enable teacher to know the level of understanding of learners.

Example of Learner – Content Interaction Once the problem has been given, learners refer book / online sources for the solutions.

Example of Learner – Learner Interaction The learners interact with each other for better understanding / doubt clarification / for finding solution to the problem addressed. If they are unable to find the solution again the interaction between Teacher and learner takes place.

My Learning:

All of us deliver lectures every day. But we have never thought the way that is being told in the video. Neither have we given thought to the elements not to the interactions which is so important as far as teaching is considered. So, we should imbibe these in ourselves and make teaching learning process an effective one.

Learning Dialogues

Concept: In this video instructor focused on online classes giving consideration to its flexibility.

Question 1: What is the equivalent of instructor videos in a physical classroom?

Answer: Teacher teaching the prepared content in front of the learners.

Question 2: What additional features does the video provide in an online setting?

Answer:

Learners can access any content at their time of convenience. The contents are accessible from any places since they are available online. Learner can watch / skip the content as and when required by controlling functions (pause and play option) which is not possible in normal physical classroom sessions. This enables learner to focus on important / tough part, spare some time on it and work on the same and the part which is easy or which doesn’t need much explanations can be skipped. This will save the learner’s time to some extent. Sometimes it is difficult for learners to understand (for example pronunciations, spellings etc.) the content delivered through video. The video transcripts will help them in clarifying the things.

My Learning:

I have never conducted any classes online. But giving consideration to the advantages of video lectures it seems that learners can gain a lot from the lectures. Some things such as the reflection spot has much more significance and it should be inculcated so that students gain interest in the lectures

Topic: Learning by Doing Activities

Concept: In this session the instructor put forth the concept of LbDs and why these Lbds are important in day to day teaching process.

Question: What advantage do you see in answering practice questions immediately after LeD videos?

Answer:

It helps to know whether the concept has been clearly understood by learner. Answering practice questions enables learner to know how much content they have grasped and how much they have forgotten / how correctly they have grasped or how quickly they grasped the content. This will assess themselves directly.

My Learning: I came to know that I have been learning/ doing Lbds right from the first video (LeD 1.1). Usually I ask questions (brainstorming) to students to know whether students have understood

the concept or not. But these activities are ungraded and very of them participate in these activities. Grading of these activities is one which that can be included so that every student participates actively.

Topic: Learning extension resources

Concept: This session introduced the pedagogic feature of Assimilation quiz. These are helpful in extending ones knowledge or verify whatever has been learnt.

Question: What is the function of an Assimilation Quiz (AQ)?

Answer: It helps in clarifying/ stressing on the concepts that we have already learnt. This will sometimes enable us to get extra knowledge/ concepts that are not discussed in class.

My Learning:

Usually I provide links to various videos from my subject to students in order to enhance their current understanding. I don’t take test / quiz to verify the same which I think should implement henceforth. But sometimes I think that students should explore by themselves. (Opinions are welcomed)

What are the advantages of having a structured group discussion with a focus question and specific instructions?

Answer:

It helps learners to stick to key point and not get diverted from the topic. Discussion amongst different learners will enhance their knowledge as well as vocabulary. Sometimes discussions may result into some new idea / conclusions also.

Concept: This session talks importance of having a structured group discussion. Putting important points / Instructions right in the beginning will help learners to stay focused and learn more from other learners. My Learning: I think these are usually told to learners (mostly during the placements) still many get diverted from the topic. What could be the reasons?? Many of them are unable to speak also. I think they need some training in these sections

Topic: Information and Communication Technology Basics of ICT

Concept Prof Prabhakar T V focused on exactly what is ICT and how they can be useful in the upcoming era of education. Using a Lxt, detailed information regarding how ICTs have evolved was shared with learners.

My Learning: I came to know that ICTs are going to be an important element in the upcoming education. Different ICT tools and their proper usage are to be done to make teaching a effective process.

Topic: Maintaining a Course Journal

Concept :

This session provided information regarding how to create and maintain effective course journal. This is very important since we have to keep record of each and everything that we do in classrooms. It is going to help to recollect exactly what we did last time and what can additions can be done or what is the lacunae. This will also maintain the records which are required to be produced in front of different committees.

Question: Write one advantage of maintaining a “Course Journal”

Answer: We write the things that we learnt. Just by looking at the points we are able to recall what did we learn in that particular lecture / day. This will be one kind of record.

My Learning:

Well I came to know that maintaining a course journal is itself a process. Usually we don’t stress on minor things (e.g choosing a document editor). But it is so important to deliver the content in most effective way. Similarly writing details such as date and time was not even being thought off. But this can be useful to us whenever we want to revise certain things in our courses. U can find a screenshot of my previous course book below which I will try to modify using the guidelines

Topic : Week 2: The Internet

Concept: This session focused on exactly what is internet and how internet has originated. The necessity of having email addresses was also addressed in the video.

Question 1: Do you know what Internet is? Do you know how it works? Do you know how information travels from your computer to other networks? Answer: Internet is one of its kinds which provide tremendous information regarding each and every concept / aspect at any time. At the same time it connects people from different parts of the world and is a best communication facility in the current era.

Well, truly speaking I don’t know how internet works. For me internet is like just make on the mobile data and you get connected to internet. For sending information there I need of certain medium through which it is transferred and these need to be encoded and decoded at either end i.e at senders and receiver end. Well I have watched following videos to know what happens actually when we connect to internet and how data gets transferred from one source to other. Think of what happens when you write and send an email to your friend. What do you think are the activities/processes taking place from the time you send it to the time you receive a response?

Answer:

. The information in the emails is sent in the form of packets through protocols. The protocols checks for the address where it has to be sent. So it contacts the DNS server (for IP address) and finds whether the receiver has any valid email exchange servers. Once it finds the servers (MTA

My Learning: This session has helped me in knowing how actually internet works. This video actually tells us that great things come off from small experiments and that is why we should always try to experiment irrespective to the outcomes.

Concept: The video explains need and different options available for website creation, what the differences between simple and multifunctional websites are and how they can be used in for knowledge sharing purpose.

Concept: This session focused on creating a site on word press and different customizations that can be done in word press.

Concept: This session introduced regarding how to manage contents in word press using control panel and provided detailed information on blogs and pages.

Topic : Week 3 - Creating your own Video Resources

Visual Presentation Skills 1

Reflection Spot

Assume that you are planning to create a slide with your subject content and uploaded it to your Word Press website. You are creating this as an open educational resource (OER) so that everyone can access and use it. What visual parameters will you take care of during your slide design so that your website visitors find it easier to understand?

Write the top three points in your course journal. My Answer: 1. Formatting (Font, color, size, etc.) 2. Layout of slides (Theme, transitions etc.) 3. Animations (using it wherever possible)

Concept:

Dr. Sameer Sahasrabudhe provided an insight to process of visual presentation and particularly focused on application of using different graphics for better visualization. This session highlights that there is need to understand the importance of different types of graphics to be used as per the content.

My Learning:

Visual presentations are more useful to make learners engaged and find the content more interesting. Frequently I find most of the students getting bored when they undergo within first 30 minutes of the lectures (especially during afternoon hours). So it is very essential for us to make them alert and stay focused for the rest of the time. Usually we follow 2 steps i.e. plan and execute and fail to follow impress. There may be various reasons for these but there is need to follow and impress learners while actual delivery of lectures.

Topic: Week 3 - Creating your own Video Resources

Visual Presentation Skills 2

Reflection Spot Given that you know how to design visuals from the previous learning dialogue, what do you think are the considerations you have to make when using fonts and colors in slide design? How many font types, font sizes and colors will you use in the design of your slides?

Write your responses to above questions in your course journal. My Answer: 1. Weightage / Importance of the content 2. I think this will depend on the importance of content in slides. Usually the contents in the

slides are restricted / too short and only important points (not full sentences) are focused. So 2 (or maximum 3) fonts type, size and colors are enough for one single slide.

Concept:

This session focused on importance of using different colors under varying conditions. These colors have meaning attached to it., that’s why it needs to be used very precisely. Dr. Sameer Sahasrabudhe provided certain guidelines on typography to be followed while presenting slides.

My Learning:

Content is more important in deciding the usage of medium. The content in slide should decide the color, font etc. to be used and after preparation of slide we should test the slide whether it is working properly or not. This enables us whether there are any faults within the slides or any technical difficulty well before delivering lectures.

Topic: Creating your own Video Resources

Learning Experience Interaction

Scenario:

You have been assigned to teach a course of your preference in a new class of 80 students. The class is arranged in such a way that there are ten rows of eight students each. You are required to prepare your first lecture (with four slides) consisting of the following parts: Title slide, Course Objectives, Course Outline and Assessment strategy.

Topic: Spoken Tutorial: Creating a Video Open Education Resource

Concept:

The importance of creative common is presented in this session. A brief introduction as to what is creative commons and procedure for the same is presented in the first part of this session. The video explains how videos are created using spoken tutorials and camstudio. A detailed procedure is explained in order to create your own spoken tutorials and what all things need to be done in order to create a spoken tutorial. The video is focused on how to download camstudio software, the different options available in camstudio and how to record videos using camstudio. A variety of screen casting softwares have been introduced (with LxTs) to learners along with its capabilities.

My Learning: One thing that I learned is that choosing appropriate software is very essential in developing video lectures. There are numerous softwares available on websites. We should know pros and

cons of each and select the best one in order to deliver the content qualitatively. At the same we should also remember the use of creative commons. This will help your material in getting plagiarized. Though the process of video creation seems to be easier but it is quite a difficult task to reproduce a good video. I haven’t created any video till date and this this FDP has provided me an opportunity to create my own learning material. So it’s a good START for me.

Topic: Learning Extension Resources - Multimedia Principles Concept: This session focused on use of multimedia principles in teaching-learning process. Redundancy, Coherence, spatial Contiguity are important principles and they should be used at appropriate time.

My Learning:

This video has helped me in knowing how we can design PowerPoint presentations in good manner so that students are able to grasp the content very easily. This will enable students to get focused and also provide me an opportunity to develop my own content in more precisely and crispy. For this, we should be able to recognize the needs of learners and then plan our actions.

Topic: Resource Creation and Peer Review

Concept In this LeD the need, significance and entire process of peer review is explained. This process is being implemented by IITB for assessing the course journals. Submission Phase, Allocation Phase, Review Phase, Consolidation Phase are an important phases in peer review process

My Learning:

This provides all of us a platform to go through the process of peer review. This will enable us to review certain work and things we should take into consideration while doing reviewing. We all do write journal papers. This activity will indirectly help us to know lacunae in the work and revise the work in more meaningful way.
