UPCOMING EVENTS

CALL (813) 844-7262 FOR MORE INFORMATION.

I am pleased to report to you that the Foundation completed a very successful 2016. And we have you, our donors, to thank for our success. In this issue of the FoundationFocus, we highlight all of you who made gifts to the Foundation during 2016. Without your ongoing support, we would not be able

to purchase equipment for Tampa General Hospital (TGH), provide scholarships or make funds available for research and education, just to name a few of the ways that the TGH Foundation supports the hospital.

This year, the Annual Night at the Circus celebrated its 26th and final fundraiser. The TGH Foundation has been very fortunate to have a strong partnership with Feld Entertainment. In just the past 12 years, this special event has raised over $3 million for Tampa General Hospital’s Children’s Medical Center. Our co-chairs, Teale Smith and Mary Taggart, and their committee, made sure that all of the children and adults experienced a very special evening. Also, thanks to our ticket coordinator, McIver Berner Grim, who made sure tickets found the way to over 1,300 deserving children from local nonprofits. A big thank you goes to our sponsors who donated tickets to local children’s charities. Additionally, over 1,700 employees and family members were able to enjoy the special night at the Circus. I would especially like to recognize our Ringmaster Sponsors, McKibbon Hospitality and Taggart Properties, Inc. Other special sponsors included: SunTrust Robinson Humphrey, our Three Ring Sponsor;

Carlton Fields, our Legacy Sponsor; Tampa Bay Steel, our Entertainment Sponsor; The Beck Group, our Bucket of Laughs Sponsor; and the Lightning Foundation, our Patrons’ Party Sponsor again this year.

The TGH Foundation will host its 20th Annual Gala on Saturday, May 6, 2016, at the Hilton Tampa Downtown. This year’s guests will be invited to enjoy “The Wizard of Oz: There’s No Place Like TGH.” Those attending will have an opportunity to experience great entertainment, a live auction, plated dinner, open bar and many other exciting activities. The proceeds from the Gala will benefit TGH’s Heart Transplant and VAD programs and the TGH Foundation’s Fund for the Future. Philip and Theodora Carroll and Fred and Lesley Dobbins are chairing this year’s Gala, and Jeff and Penny Vinik are our Honorary Chairs.

Thank you also to everyone who either made a donation to or brought gifts for Operation Santa. Those gifts made Christmas special for our smallest patients who had to spend time away from home over the holidays.

This is an exciting time for TGH as the hospital prepares to roll out its strategic plan. Stay tuned for more information!

Over 1,700 TGH employees and their families were able to enjoy CircusXtreme. The TGH Foundation also donated over 1,300 tickets to local charities this year so some of those less fortunate would have an opportunity to attend and experience the final thrill of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Circus – The Greatest Show on Earth®.

We wanted to take this opportunity to thank the countless volunteers and sponsors that helped to make our annual “Night at the Circus”

a tradition over the past 26 years. From small beginnings, this event became one of the TGH Foundation’s signature fundraisers, raising over $3 million in the past twelve years alone.

Although the circus has concluded, the TGH Foundation looks forward to continuing our partnership with Feld Entertainment, and we are dedicated to providing a family-friendly event for our donors.

This year’s “Buckets of Laughs” (previously known as Elephant Trunks) were a hit! Sponsors purchased their bucket from the TGH Foundation and then filled it from a list of suggested items needed by the Child Life Specialists at TGH’s Children’s Medical Center. We would like to thank The Beck Group for sponsoring this program.

Sponsors were encouraged to decorate their bucket with a favorite theme, company logos and fun color schemes. This year’s Buckets of Laughs were displayed at the Patrons’ Party at our 26th Annual “Night at the Circus” and will be personally delivered by the sponsors to TGH’s Children’s Medical Center.

MORE Health

The Beck Group

We would like to send a big thank you to the generous donors who helped make the holidays a little brighter at TGH by supporting Operation Santa. Over the holiday season, Operation Santa raised nearly $20,000 to benefit TGH’s Children’s Medical Center. In addition, many companies, organizations and individuals came to visit TGH’s Children’s Medical Center bearing gifts valued at $17,000.

Donations designated to Operation Santa make it possible for these little ones and their families to enjoy a birthday and other holiday celebrations throughout the year, even from unfamiliar, and sometimes unsettling, hospital beds. From fulfilling Christmas wish lists and birthday surprises to celebrating a patient’s last day of physical therapy or chemo, all who participate in Operation Santa bring joy to some of the very sickest of our pediatric patients.

On behalf of the sick children who may be spending birthdays, Christmas or other special family holidays as patients at TGH’s Children’s Medical Center, we want to thank all of the generous donors for participating in this year’s Operation Santa.

TGH’s Kidney Transplant Program received the highest possible rating from a national medical research foundation. TGH is the busiest transplant center in the state to receive this Five-Tier rating from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR).

The recently released report covers the period from July 2015 – July 2016. Only 30 of the 269 adult kidney transplant programs in the country received the Five-Tier rating. TGH is the third largest program in the nation to receive the Five-Tier rating.

The report analyzes the number of transplants during a one-year period, frequency of transplants and how many patients live with a functioning kidney one year after a transplant. Assessments range from One-Tier (worst) to Five-Tier (best).

SRTR evaluates national data collected by the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) on transplant programs and organ procurement organizations. Its program-specific reports provide wide-ranging information about transplant programs and their outcomes.

Nearly half of TGH’s kidney patients receive a transplant after three years on the wait list, compared to only 22.6 percent nationally. Between July 2015 and July 2016, TGH performed 214 adult kidney transplants and 18 pediatric kidney transplants.

SRTR is operated under the Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation by its Chronic Disease Research Group division. It’s responsible for providing statistical and other analytic support to the OPTN to formulate and evaluate organ allocation and other policies. It provides information that is accurate, clear and timely for use by the public, the Department of Health and Human Services, OPTN, transplant programs, organ procurement organizations, transplant candidates, transplant recipients, living donor and donor families. Improving patient outcomes is their number one goal.

Dishwasher Delwyn Collins, TGH’s own “Super Santa,” works all year long to provide foster children with a brighter Christmas.

Delwyn’s dedication was recognized by the Tampa Bay Lightning during its home opener and named him as the 2016–2017 season’s first “Lightning Community Hero.”

For Delwyn, the best part of the award means that he will be able to help even more children. The Lightning provided him with a $50,000 donation for the TGH Foundation.

“Delwyn has been a leader in giving of himself for the benefit of others, and this was recognized by the Tampa Bay Lightning Foundation when they awarded him as the first Community Hero for this season,” said Robin DeLaVergne, executive director of the Foundation and a TGH senior vice president. “The $50,000 donation in his honor will be used over the next few years for the Foster Angel Program, allowing even more children to have a special Christmas.”

For the past 26 years, Delwyn has set up the giving tree at TGH to collect toy donations to the Foster Angels of Hillsborough County. Delwyn saves all year to provide gifts for these children. Last

year, he purchased gifts for 40 children himself. His example has resonated across the hospital, inspiring employees and visitors alike. TGH now provides gifts to hundreds of children, making the hospital the largest single donor to the Foster Angels program.

“He does this because he truly cares for others and wants to ensure that kids feel loved on Christmas morning,” said Kim Christine, employee wellness manager, who nominated Delwyn for the award. “Delwyn is living proof that random acts of kindness can make a huge difference.”

Before the home opening game, Delwyn got to meet Lightning Owner Jeff Vinik and Right Wing J.T. Brown, sit on the player’s bench and get a behind-the-scenes tour.

“We even got to see the players warm up in the hallway with a soccer ball (during the tour),” he said.

Always modest, Delwyn said he enjoyed watching the Lightning’s video about his efforts and felt blessed to be thanked by so many people. But that’s not why he does it.

“It’s an honor to do what I do for everybody,” he said. “It makes me feel good.”

Representatives from USAmeriBank presented a check to Dr. Sheela Chokshi, physician leader of the Integrative Medicine Program, and members of the Integrative Arts in Medicine team. “The work Dr. Chokshi is doing through her Integrative Arts in Medicine Program is innovative and positively impacts the patients at TGH,” said David Ogburn, senior vice president, Professional & Executive Banking Division of USAmeriBank. “We’re proud to help TGH expand this beneficial program to even more patients.”

In advance of the TGH Brandon Healthplex’s opening in early spring, members of the hospital’s governing board, Florida Health Sciences Center Inc. and the TGH Foundation’s Board of Trustees gathered for a short dedication ceremony and tours.

“You are going to be very, very impressed with what you see today … it’s truly world class,” said John A. Brabson Jr., chair of the hospital’s board.

Robin DeLaVergne, executive director of the TGH Foundation, thanked representatives from USAmeriBank for their support of the project and donation to purchase four pieces of original artwork which hangs in the lobby and in the Outpatient Surgery Center’s waiting room.

The groups took guided tours of the 130,000-square-foot, four-story facility and learned about the TGH Brandon Healthplex’s services.

• The Emergency Center includes 20 private beds and two resuscitation bays. It will be open around the clock. Board-certified emergency physicians will treat adult and pediatric patients. The on-site helipad will allow Aeromed to fly patients needing more advanced medical care to the main hospital for treatment.

• The Outpatient Surgery Center at the TGH Brandon Healthplex will provide a variety of same-day surgeries for adults and pediatric patients. It features six operating rooms, with space to add two more in the future, and two endoscopy rooms. It also includes 13 recovery rooms and 24 pre- and post-procedure bays.

• The full-service laboratory will provide a wide range of lab tests for patients.

• The Imaging Services area includes digital X-rays, CT scans and ultrasounds.

• A full-service pharmacy for patients, employees and the public is located on the first floor. It accepts most major health insurance plans.

• A café area is next to the pharmacy. It will sell beverages, salads, snacks, soups and other items.

• TGMG and USF primary care and specialty care physicians will also have offices in the building.

The TGH Brandon Healthplex is located at 10740 Palm River Rd., just off the Leroy Selmon Expressway, next to Topgolf.
