Foundations 1 st Quarter Sketch Assignment Directions: Complete 10 sketches outside of class per quarter. This work is an opportunity to combine creativity and imagination with technical skill. Each sketch must be a full page in your sketchbook or an entire sheet of any plain 8.5x11 paper. A minimum of 45 minutes is required for each sketch. I can easily tell if the required amount of time was spent or not. Use pencil Unless otherwise indicated, all sketches are to be drawn directly from observation. Sit in front of what you are drawing and look at it- the real thing, not a photograph or memory. Example: If you are drawing your 5 favorite objects, find these objects and arrange them together on a table. Sit in front of the arrangement so you can see what you are drawing and draw it. Choose any 10 sketch options from the list on the back. Indicate the # in the corner of the sketch paper. 10 sketches worth a total of 100 pts = 1 project grade. Midpoint due date/ Progress Check: Friday, September 14 Five completed sketches required. Opportunity for feedback. Worth 25 pts. And option to redo them before final date. 10 Final Sketches due: Friday, October 19th

Foundations 1st Quarter Sketch Assignment

Directions:

• Complete 10 sketches outside of class per quarter. This work is an opportunity to combine creativity and imagination with technical skill.

• Each sketch must be a full page in your sketchbook or

Sketch Options: Choose any 10. Remember each sketch must fill an entire sheet of paper. Write the # of the sketch in the corner 1. Like the Arrow Design Project, create a design using the letters of your name. Use your first or last name in an abstract design (line, pattern, and shape) to produce an area of emphasis and depth. The letters of your name should act as interesting shapes in the design, not just letters. Explore ideas for lettering your name (different types of letters, shapes, and sizes). Use bold thick letters that are actually shapes rather than lines. Just like the arrow project consider scale, overlap and movement. 2. Draw the inside of your closet 3. Draw the inside of your desk drawer 4. Just before your room is cleaned, draw it 5. Draw the inside of your refrigerator 6. Draw the contents of your garage 7. Draw your desk/table after you’ve worked on a project 8. Before the dishes are washed, draw them 9. Draw a pile of laundry waiting to get washed 10. Draw yourself in a mirror 11. Draw your hand against other parts of anatomy (chin, knee, etc.) 12. Draw what is in the rear-view mirror of your family’s car 13. Draw an object seen through glass (how does the glass make a difference) 14. Draw a dark object in a light environment 15. Draw a dark object in a dark environment 16. Lie on the floor, draw what is eye level 17. Make a drawing that says something about the environment 18. Make a drawing that says something about the world situation 19. Look out your bedroom window, draw what you see 20. Make a drawing at McDonalds 21. Draw your portrait from the reflection of a shiny chrome object i.e. toaster, bowl, 22. Prop a kitchen tool up (like eggbeaters, cheesegrater, etc.) and do a contour line

drawing, then lay it on its side and draw it. 23. Draw a collection of objects from nature. Using a variety of lines. 24. Find a spot in the school and make a drawing of what you see. 25. Draw your hands and feet 26. Make a still life of crumpled things, cloth, paper, soda cans. Draw from observation. 27. Sit on the floor at the bottom of a stairway, draw the view looking up the stairway from

observation. 28. Look at yourself in a spoon- draw the distorted image. 29. Draw corner of a room in your house and all the furniture and stuff in it. 30. Create an arrangement of objects; use a lamp or other light to make dramatic shadows. 31. Draw your pet sitting somewhere 32. Creative views of your car, bicycle, skateboard, etc. 33. Draw bottles and cans. Have them crunched up for details in the reflections and folds in

the metal. Include lots of details and show a small area that shows off the reflections and surface quality of the bottles
