What’s Happening with our Building? Does it Effect Your Donor Dollars?

There are so many exciting improvements happening to our facility but before you worry that we are spending much needed donor dollars on these upgrades let us assure you we are not! We have an innovative partnership with the Ministry for Children and Youth Services on many programs that we offer and because of that we have access to the Partner Facility Renewal Funds! Our success at acquiring these funds is largely due to the quality programs we provide and the hard work of our staff. We are thrilled with this influx of capital funding to help us keep our facility well maintained, safe and interesting for the kids and parents, but these dollars can only be used for those purposes and do not assist with the needs we have to provide programs or subsidies for children.

The Foundation continues to raise the funds to keep costs affordable and to respond to the increased need for subsidies because of

the economic challenges our families face. And

that is where you, our donors, come in! We are very grateful for your continued support and hope you are as excited as we are for the additional capital funds we have received to improve our facility and make it the best it can be for our programs and the children participating!

Kids Can Be themselves at Camp

Kelli Mitchell Camp Fund

Watch for the campaign in your mail in May.Your donation will ensure that no child is denied a camp experience due to financial barriers.

The Subsidy CrunchOver the past two years, the economy has been severely affecting local families. In the City of Kawartha Lakes, we are

seeing high unemployment rates that seriously hamper our family’s ability to pay for services for their children. In many

cases, fees for children’s activities have to take a back seat to food, rent and other living expenses. The Club has a mandate

to ensure that a family’s financial situation does not hamper a child from being on a level playing field with his or her

peers. Our byline has always been, “no child will be turned away due to lack of financial means”.

At the Club, families have access to high quality, low cost and subsidized out of school care, summer camps, sports,

leadership and cultural programs that create short, medium and long term positive outcomes for their children. Many

of these programs are free and others are made available through funds leveraged from partners mandated to assist

families with costs (e.g.: Canadian Tire Jump Start, Child Care and Early Years Resource Funding, and others). Even with

these accommodations, the Club must budget additional dollars to provide for families who need further services. We have

seen costs for subsidizing programs triple over the past two years. For the 2013-14 fiscal year, we budgeted $26,000 to

support families in need. This was based on previous year end totals. That year, the subsidy total was over $61,000. In

response, the Club budgeted $56,000 this fiscal year thinking that the previous total was a high water mark. However,

it is projected that we will be close to the $70,000 mark by year end.

The Club needs the support of all our partners to ensure no families are left behind. We are grateful for all our donors

who support the Foundation so we can continue to ensure that no child is ever turned away. One of the ways you can

respond to this important need is by sending your support to our “Send a Kid to Camp” campaign when it arrives in the

mail in a few weeks. This fund helps to ensure that all children can enjoy a summer camp experience regardless of their

financial needs.

Did You Know We Have Programs in 10 Communities? We have Club programs running in 10 communities! We are in Lindsay, Dunsford,

Omemee, Kirkfield, Little Britain, Woodville, Manvers, Fenelon Falls, Bobcaygeon and

Coboconk. We have a variety of programs running in our rural communities outside

Lindsay that serve approximately 1200 kids including after school, summer camps and

sports programs (ball hockey, soccer, basketball). The sports programs are all low cost

and subsidized for those facing financial struggles making these programs available to

kids who might not otherwise have access to these kinds of activities locally.

In addition, we have been able to employ young people locally to run these programs

and have a great contingent of volunteers that live in these areas to support the

programs.

These programs are highly valued and families are grateful that they can access these

opportunities for their children right in their own communities.

The Foundation invites corporate sponsors, friends or family members in these

communities who might be interested in supporting the continuation of these

programs in our rural areas to contact the Foundation to find out more details on

how you can make a difference! www.bgckl.com/get-involved/donate

President’s Message Emily Avery Graves, Foundation Board President

Greetings from the Foundation Board. The Foundation has continued in its commitment to undertake initiatives

to meet our fundraising objectives through opportunities that promote awareness of the Clubs and their

activities and specific areas of financial need. We are able to achieve successes through the participation

and support of our donors, sponsors, volunteers and community members.

We have donation opportunities through targeted campaigns such as the upcoming annual Kelli Mitchell mailing which

funds are directed to assist in providing the opportunity of summer camp experiences to local youth. There are also

monthly giving opportunities to provide support to the Clubs’ broad scope of services provided, ranging from childcare,

before and after school care, arts and athletic programs, day camps, youth outreach and mentoring to keep programs

financially accessible.

We also have special events that our supported by our communities through participation and sponsorship. The

introduction of the Shamrock Sprint this past March was a new highlight to our event series. As a chip-timed road race

with an Irish inspired flare, it provided an opportunity to highlight the Club within our local and surrounding communities

in a fun and athletic venue. With the great response and support received by all involved we look forward to this growing

as an annual event. As always, a highlight in summer is the annual Jeff Beukeboom Charity Classic golf tournament.

Through the generosity of the Beukeboom family and the support of participants, this event has continuously provided

a substantial financial contribution towards our fundraising efforts.

The Clubs continue to be committed to continuous improvement, with focused efforts to update and expand the facilities

and programs offered, catering to the needs of children and youth in our communities. As a non-profit organization, the

Clubs are dependent on the contributions provided through fundraising initiatives to meet our financial needs required to

continue to maintain and expand the important services provided for youth in our communities. Your continued support

helps us to ensure the success of the Clubs in giving kids a “good place to be”.

What Are Families Saying About Our Rural Community Programs?I am writing to share my accolades for the After School Program in Kirkfield which is a rural outreach of the Boys and Girls Club of Kawartha Lakes. I am very pleased with this program. The staff and supervisors are always welcoming and friendly when I come through the door. They bring me peace of mind to know that my children are being looked after in a safe, healthy and supportive environment. They have worked with the bus drivers and St. John’s Catholic Elementary School to ensure children’s safe arrival which is key when I am working an hour commute away. I am thankful for the extra set of eyes that can view my children through a developmental lens and offer me insight on my children’s social skill development in a less structured environment than the daytime school setting. I am grateful for the reinforcement that they provide in helping my children grow and develop both physically, socially and emotionally. The supervisor is always willing to share information regarding my children’s participation and behaviour that day. They also take the time to listen to my input, insights and perspective. We work together to ensure the same messages are being conveyed to my children and I feel that they offer a very enriching and stimulating program that is child-centred and top-notch. I am so pleased with the program that it would be great to have an extension of the Kirkfield program to offer a Before School Program as well! Thank you again for all your hard work and for all that you do for my children and the children of Lady Mackenzie Public School and St. John’s Catholic Elementary School.Maigen Bundy (Parent, Kirkfield)

“My daughter loves the programs offered with the Boys & Girls Club. Being in a rural area it is difficult to find quality programs close by. The Club has been a blessing by allowing my daughter to participate in quality programs that are cost effective. She is able to socialize with other kids her age in a safe and nurturing environent. As a working parent I know she is safe and well cared for in the after school and summer camp programs. She adores the sports programs as well as it being a place for parents to meet up weekly to talk to other parents about their kids and catch up on each other’s lives. The Boys & Girls Clubs is a necessity in our area as without it the kids would not have any other options in the community. We love the Club!”Paula La Prairie (Parent, Coboconk & Kirkfield: after school, camps & sports programs)
