East Midlands Golf Club of the Year for 2019


History

Our course is set in picturesque rolling countryside on the border of Nottinghamshire

/ Leicestershire and provides some stunning views across south Nottinghamshire. Laid out in 1909 the course is unique in its design with no two holes alike - it demands a wide range of shots offering a true challenge to each aspect of every golfer’s game.

Since our inception on Tuesday 6th July 1909, when a group of 15 Edwardian gentlemen sat down with the ambitious idea of building a golf links at East Leake, The Rushcliffe Golf Club has always prided itself on offering a golfing challenge like no other. Undulating fairways with well-guarded and pristine greens are common place offering the Club Player a different experience every time they begin their round.


5th (Spinney - Par 3) - During March a mass of bluebells set this unusual and difficult par 3. Measuring over 250 yards off the back tee, this requires a true strike as the ball enters the skyline. The tee is completely sheltered from any crosswind, creating problems if you ignore cloud movements. The landing area is critical if you are going to find the sanctuary of the green, as the bunker on the right-hand side awaits any hesitation.

6th (Hillside - Par 4) - Drive the ball down the left-hand side of the fairway and you will find the perfect approach into this small undulating green. A right-hand side

approach requires the skill of a surgeon to delicately land the ball and stop it on the green. Your short game skills will be tested here as this unassuming hole causes more problems when positioning is lost.

7th (Reverse - Par 3) - An elevated tee shot into a long narrow green produces one of the course’s toughest par 3s. Two bunkers cleverly protect this small target with thick grass ready to swallow up any stray shot. The green slopes away from you, making a front pin position difficult to attack, while a back pin suckers you into one of the bunkers.

8th (Bushes - Par 4) – The longest par 4 on the course that challenges your tee shot. Anyone hitting the ball right to left will certainly finish in the left-hand rough. The right play us fading the ball to allow the ball to scuttle off the down slope and up the fairway. Making the green in regulation requires a high soft landing shot into a small false fronted green. If you hit low you will have to negotiate the cross furrows, making this type of approach unpredictable. The rise up the green regularly bewilders players who then require short game skills to recover their misjudgement.

Course Tour

1st (Hillocks - Par 4) – A beauty of an opening hole which will grab your attention. From the back tees you have a challenging 160-yard carry to overcome and, although the fairway is generously wide, anything short of a 230-yard carry will meet the upslope and reduce the running shot down to a mere trickle. This results in a 401-yard hole playing more like 450 yards. To challenge your skills the green is small, protected by two ‘sentry’ bunkers and is set above an incline, reducing your chance of running the ball onto the green. A front pin position seduces you into a false sense of security and then exposes you to a fast sloping green.

2nd (Oak Tree - Par 4) – A course favourite what boasts a dogleg right measuring 256 yards with the green laying around 240 yards. Very tempting to hit a ‘little fade shot’ and blast it on the green. Waiting for the straight hit is the inconspicuous ‘out of bounds’ at only 200 yards

3rd (Dumbles - Par 3) - A friendly mid-length par 3 requiring a well struck shot. The green is elevated and framed by a large, statesman-like tree guarding the right-hand side, manoeuvring you over to the left where two unassuming bunkers lie in wait. Watch out for the crosswinds

and inconspicuous slopes which will challenge your judgement on the green.

4th (Barn - Par 4) – This allows you to unleash a drive into a generous fairway. Drive the ball down the left and you must negotiate the remains of a barn where legend would have us believe many a player has carried, leaving a mere pitch shot to the green. The furrowed fairway delivers a variety of second shots into a friendly green. Deep grass and a shallow bunker protect the right-hand side but this is not the line to approach. The left offers friendly contours guiding the ball onto a relatively flat green.

2ND GREEN 5TH GREEN


9th (Gibraltar - Par 4) - A spectacular tee shot into a tight right swinging fairway is protected by two right-hand side bunkers, tempting the long hitter to unleash and make the 280-yard carry. The green runs away from you, taxing your skills to control the ball. The green is unforgiving, causing any slightly misdirected shot to run off.

10th (Roadside - Par 4) - A signature tee shot for The Rushcliffe with an elevated tee into a generous fairway. Three challenging fairway bunkers which, from the men’s tee box lie not far off the ‘Tiger line’, will intimidate. If you’re a long hitter

the ‘spectacles’ bunkers await to swallow up an over exuberant drive, forcing you to make a difficult long bunker shot and then get down in regulation to save par. The small, sloping green is cleverly defended with a deep bunker short right and a sloping approach, feeding into a deep left bunker.

11th (Cross - Par 3) - This surprisingly large but well bunkered green has a reputation for challenging even the most competent of putters, especially when the greens are running at full summer speed. Caressing the ball towards the hole is recommended. If

you have the ‘blacksmith’s touch’ you will certainly become a victim to this inconspicuous hole.

12th (Westward - Par 5) – One of the best driving holes on the course, the left-hand side is protected by heavy woods and undergrowth lying at 250 yards. The right-hand side is fortified by a friendlier tree line that will obscure your line to the green but will save you the walk back to the tee for a ‘re-load’. Find the fairway and you have exposed the green to a well struck elevated shot. Miss the fairway and you are facing a demanding lay-up requiring skilled judgement to avoid a

cross-ditch, a centred maple tree and a pot bunker. Get this wrong and you are soon racking the numbers up.

13th (Terrace - Par 4) - Get your driving boots on for this one. Twin bunkers guard and narrow the fairway at 250 yards. Laying up short leaves a demanding shot into a small and highly elevated green. The right side seems to offer a ‘safe’ route in - however, there sits a deep tricky bunker ready to compound your problems if you don’t possess the required skills. Missing the green requires a sensitive touch to recover wherever the pin is placed.”

14th (Rushcliffe - Par 3) - The Rushcliffe ‘signature’ hole is the best of the par 3s, offering an elevated tee shot measuring 206 yards off the very back. Large statesman-like trees stand guard over this charming and challenging hole. A sheltered tee seduces you into ignoring the wind direction, but once the ball rises above the treetops the wind will take control. The green is larger than average but offers one of the most difficult putts on the course. Whatever you do, you can enjoy the array of bluebells and pheasants that gather in this most serene corner of the course.

15th (Punchbowl - Par 5) - Striking the ball out of the wilderness of the secluded tee finds a fairway that angles to the right. A straight second shot requires the negotiation of a pond on the left and on the right a large ash tree that has stood like a guardian angel over the 15th green since its conception. The green lies in an amphitheatre that accepts the ball with ease, ready to challenge you with some of the most difficult putts on the course.

10TH HOLE


16th (Quarry – Par 4) - A classic risk and reward hole. For the long hitter the green is in range as it swings left around six large trees but a less than perfect shot will bound off the natural slope towards a snaking water hazard. Keeping the ball on the fairway is essential if you are going to challenge the hole. A fairway bunker sits in wait for the misjudged lay-up, ready to inflict heartache onto any unsuspecting player. The green, which possesses some devious slopes and contours, sits at the bottom of a slope, allowing you to manoeuvre the ball down the incline and onto the putting surface.

17th (Station – Par 5) - Take a deep breath and prepare yourself for this testing tee shot. Out of bounds left and heavy undergrowth right allow no room for error. The fairway is generous but any mis-struck shot will be punished. A fairway bunker is set at 280 yards yielding a route past on the right, but this is only for the brave. A good tee shot offers you the green but don’t be fooled - you must strike a quality shot off an awkward upslope, which encourages a left swinging ball flight and an inevitable lost ball. The sanctuary of the green can be found from the right-hand side with a favourable slope to guide the ball.

18th (Home – Par 4) - Not the most difficult of finishing holes but it does possess a ‘sting in the tail’. Crosswinds can easily be forgotten as you strike from the shelter of the low lying tree. Out of bounds on both sides and a hideously difficult bunker can easily wreck your score. Overcome these and you are positioned to challenge the hole with a second shot. A friendly green awaits with a gentle reminder of subtle slopes as you complete your mission around this uniquely challenging golf course.

DEFINITIONS- Academy Membership: limited to new members, this category enables you to play whenever you like for a year as well as 10 half hour lessons with our Pro Chris (worth £200) included in the price. However, you will not be allocated an official CONGU handicap so you will not be entitled to enter any competitions. You can however upgrade to full membership if you decide to at any time during your first year.

- Country Membership: a reduced membership rate for anyone living over 25 miles away from the Golf Club as the crow flies.

- Flexi Membership: an upfront fee of £249 is followed by an additional day playing fee (£20 during the week and £25 on the weekend) each time you play the course.

You will be allocated an official CONGU handicap and you will be entitled to play in Club competitions however you will have to pay the day playing rate plus the competition entry fee.

- Student Membership: a reduced membership fee for anyone in full time education who has proof of their student identity.

- Junior Membership: a reduced membership fee for any junior up to the age of 17.

- Social Membership: a non-golf membership which entitles you to 15% discount over the bar and information regarding our upcoming social functions. You will not have access to any of our golfing facilities.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONAll members must also pay for their England Golf Union Fees. Full membership also entitles free membership to children up to the age of 12.

the year for men, ladies, mixed and senior golfers. We offer a full programme and at great value.

Open competitions are for enjoyment, playing with friends and having a great round of golf with good food and drink available as well, all at a very affordable price!

Our Golf Professional

Chris Hall, our respected professional, has been at the Club for over 23 years and in

2019 will reach the milestone of being a PGA Professional for 40years.

For those new to the Club, Chris has had a very successful career away from being a club professional. He became British Champion in 1993, qualified to represent Europe in the PGA Cup on 3 occasions and become a member of the European Tour having qualified through the notorious Tour School in 1995. Chris has had over 60 Professional wins and has held 25 course records.

To further his knowledge Chris travelled to the US to study at the prestigious Titleist Performance Institute in California where he subsequently joined a small pool of European coaches to become a Level 3 Golf Fitness Instructor.

Pinfold Vets is a privately owned, independent Veterinary Practice situated close to Loughborough, in the village of East Leake. Owned by Veterinary Surgeons Lorna Clark and Rupert Symes, our vision is to deliver a high standard of care to you and your pets, with an affordable and transparent pricing structure. Analysing and optimizing a player’s performance is done using Trackman.

By displaying the shot’s 3D trajectory together with 26 impact and ball flight parameters in real time (data is delivered within 1 second) we can fine tune equipment allowing us to get the best out of a player’s action.

Using our knowledge of club head, shaft and grip design we are able to achieve a custom fitting second to none.

The Rushcliffe’s coaching programmes teach you to deal with all aspects of ball striking. We will show you how to gain the most out of your movement ranges to maximise power and consistency, plus guide you through a programme of improvement so you can continue to lower your scores. We cover a wide variety of skills from driving the ball to the sensitive touches required around the fast undulating greens.

• From Junction 24 take A453 (Remembrance Way) towards Nottingham
