Founded in Phoenix (USA) in 1967, the Food Bank Against Hunger comes to Europe in 1984 in Paris (France) to be precise.Today, there is a network of 275 Food Banks spread over almost all countries in Europe.

In 1991 , the first Food Bank Against Hunger was created in Lisbon, Portugal.
In 2007, the Algarve attends the opening of the twelfth Food Bank Against Hunger.
Currently, there are 21 food banks in Portugal, integrated in the Portuguese Federation of Food Banks Against Hunger.
Activities we perform:
-Campaigns for collection of food supplied in supermarkets, twice a year;
-Gathering daily food from agriculture, industry and distribution channels.
Activities carried out by the population:
- Volunteering at food collection campaigns (supermarkets and separating food collected at the warehouse);- Donation of funds and food (individuals and companies).

Number of charities supported by BA (Banco Alimentar): 120 scattered around the whole Algarve.
Number of people receiving aid: Approximately 18 000
andalmost 6 500 families.

BA has generated 10.7 million Euros in aid, which has been achieved with a budget of around 200 thousand Euros in the current expenditure period.
In more than nine years, BA has distributed 10,419 tones of food throughout the district of Faro, the equivalent to 20.8 million meals, according to FEBA (European Federation of Food Banks).

Between 2007 and 2011, an average of 400 tons of food was distributed to those in need.
In 2012, 830 tons; in 2013, 1.080 tons; in 2014, 1.830; in 2015, 2.341 and in 2016, 2.345 tons of food was collected and distributed.
In 2017 (January to the end of June) 1.124tons.

Future plans/projects:
- To increase the number of tons of food collected by volunteers in campaigns and by company donations.
- New facilities in the Algarve.
- Increase our support to families and poor people in the region.
- Foster the development of integration projects

- Integrate people at risk (prisoners, disabled people, recover addict people);
- Production of healthy food (vegetables for soup, salads and dishes);
- Environmental concerns (organic farming).

- Started in November 2015, with 700m2 and today we have 9.000m2 of area of food production;
- We plant cabbage, broccoli, leeks, tomato, pepper, beet, zucchini, lettuce, cauliflower. And next plants will be sweet potato, beans and broad bean.
- We have collected until today 9 720 kg of vegetables;
