AN energy saving company is currently in Tzaneen making unsubstantiated claims on energy savings on units that are installed in-line with geysers.

It seems that this company is targeting senior citizens and the uninformed.

Rumour has it that a deposit of R2 500 is required and thereafter a monthly installment of R666 for 48 months.

They do not have GTM approval and the GTM was never approached for approval and the GTM does not endorse such equipment.

Please contact the GTM Electrical Department before you make any fi nancial

commitments. This does not include heat pumps, energy

saving bulbs and solar geysers as approved by ESKOM.

This is something new that came to GTM’s attention. The company claim electricity costs are going up with 30 something percent. It is not true. Rates as published (if I remember correctly) is 12.25%.

Talk to the electricity department of GTM. Don’t fall victim. Residents can get free advice from them to make the right choice.

This is an urgent appeal to the general public. Do not make uninformed decisions.

IF you are a gifted young jazz or opera singer, you could win a coveted Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) Overseas Scholarship.

Applications for the 2015 SAMRO Overseas Scholarships for singers are now open, but the May 15, deadline is fast approaching.

Music students and young professionals aged 32 and younger are eligible to apply for these prestigious music study awards.

Every year since 1962, the SAMRO Foundation, which manages music education and corporate social investment programmes on behalf of the SAMRO– offers South Africa’s gifted music students the opportunity to win one of two lucrative scholarships to further their postgraduate studies overseas.

One of these is awarded in the Western Art (or “classical”) music genre and the other is presented for excellence in jazz music. The scholarships operate on a four-year cycle, alternating among instrumentalists, composers, keyboard players and singers.

In 2015, the SAMRO Foundation is inviting applications from music students majoring in vocal performance at a South African university. Applicants must be citizens of South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho or Swaziland, born after May 15, 1982.

The two main overseas scholarship awards are currently valued at R170 000 each, with a number of subsidiary prizes also available for exceptional candidates. The total prize pot for this highly regarded annual music competition amounts to almost R500 000.

The SAMRO Overseas Scholarships Competition has produced a gallery of illustrious singing alumni over the past 50 years.

After winning the 2011 SAMRO scholarship in the Western Art category, University of Cape Town alumnus Maudé Montierre went on to obtain her Master’s degree in opera cum laude at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London. Currently a PhD student at UCT, she hopes to become the youngest South African to graduate with a doctorate next year.

Since winning the SAMRO scholarship, Maudé has sung in the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition in New York and was a fi nalist in the Wilhelm Stenhammar International Music Competition in Sweden. She has also been invited to sing at the

Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Germany and the Glimmerglass Festival Young Artists’ Programme in the United States. Among her roles to date, she counts appearances for Cape Town Opera as well as singing the challenging Queen of the Night aria from Die Zauberfl öte for Brent Opera in London and Gretel in Hänsel und Gretel for Edinburgh’s Opera Holloway, to great acclaim. Maudé will be singing Donna Anna in Don Giovanni on London’s West End in July.

Fellow UCT graduate Vuyo Sotashe was always earmarked for great things. Even before winning the jazz singing category in the 2011 SAMRO Overseas Scholarships competition, Vuyo had performed with George Benson at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and had received a South African Music Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album with his church’s worship band, Proxy.

In 2012, he was selected to sing with the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band at the Johannesburg Joy of Jazz Festival before touring Sweden with the band.

Vuyo was subsequently awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to further his studies in the United States and has also taken lessons with the likes of Maria Schneider and a Thelonious Monk Competition winner and Grammy nominated vocalist - Gretchen Parlato.

Both of these young music luminaries-in-the-making used their SAMRO scholarships as a springboard to greater things, and now the sky is certainly the limit for Vuyo and Maudé – as will be the case for this year’s winners.

The scholarships competition takes the format of three rounds, adjudicated by a panel of music experts and culminating in a public gala concert at the Linder Auditorium in Johannesburg. There, the two top candidates in each category will be required to perform a number of prescribed and individually selected compositions, accompanied by professional musicians.

Prospective candidates for the 2015 SAMRO Overseas Scholarships for singers are invited to download the regulations and the application form from the SAMRO Foundation website (www.samrofoundation.org.za). Applications should be submitted to: SAMRO Foundation, 20 De Korte Street, Braamfontein, 2017, before Friday, May15. Enquiries may be directed to [email protected].

Gehoor-praatjieIs anti-freeze the answer for your car this winter?WITH the days and nights getting cooler, car engines take longer to warm up and can be damaged if parts become frozen overnight, for example.

While using anti-freeze products may be the solution to engine freeze, Les Mc Master from the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA) warns motorists not to be fooled by ‘just any’ anti-freeze products on the market.

“There is quite a lot of confusion surrounding the use of anti-freeze in the cooling systems of vehicles. The incorrect application of anti-freeze, or the dilution thereof, can result in serious corrosive damage to various parts of the engine including water pump, radiator and even the engine-cylinder head,” he warns.

The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) has two standards for anti-freeze. The fi rst standard is SANS/SABS 1251, where a product must be diluted with clean water in one of two different ratios – 50/50 (1:1) or 33.3/67.7 (1:2) according to instructions, but preferably 1:1. The second, SANS/SABS 1839, is where a coolant is already diluted with water in a 40/60 ratio and is ready to use. It should not be diluted any further.

“If, for example, a coolant product carrying the SABS 1839 mark is diluted it becomes ineffi cient and corrosion will result causing damage to engine components. It’s therefore important to understand what you are putting into your engine before doing so,” says Mc Master.

So what should you be using? “Unfortunately looking for the SABS/SANS compliance mark is no guarantee of the quality of the product,” says Mc Master.

He offers the following tips when looking for and using an effective anti-freeze product:

*Buy branded coolant products from reliable and reputable outlets.

* The price of the product is a good indication

of quality. Cheaper varieties are likely to have already been diluted.

* Ask that your mechanic uses a hydrometer to check the coolant in your vehicle’s cooling system.

The mechanic should also check for solids (rust particles) fl oating in the coolant and look out for

indications of electrolysis (white surface spots) especially in aluminium radiators.

* In a good coolant, the content of the vital chemical – mono-ethylene glycol – must not be

lower than30% or higher than 50%. The glycol content can also be measured using a hydrometer.

* It is a best to drain the cooling system of a vehicle once a year, pour in the correct quantity of

Undiluted cooling protector and only then fi ll the system with clean water.

*Coolants of various colours are available on the market, some with fl orescence added to make

Leak detection easier. Colours are no indication of the type of chemicals used in the mixture.

“Most anti-freeze products are really cooling system protectors – they do not necessarily protect only against freezing. A characteristic of a good quality coolant is that it will prevent boiling – and these anti-boil characteristics are more important in most parts of South Africa than the anti-freeze characteristics,” advises Mc Master.

He adds that it’s also worthwhile turning on your car and letting it to run for a few minutes before driving off in the morning. “Warming an engine up before driving will ensure the longevity of the parts in the engine. Speak to your local workshop owner for more advice on anti-freeze and looking after your car during the winter months,” he concludes.

Noah’s Ark Children’s Home a save haven for childrenTO discipline one child is admirable, but to teach 30 children responsibility is extraordinary.

When arriving at the Noah’s Ark Children’s Home on the R71 outside Tzaneen, it seems like a normal farm house with lush gardens, a swimming pool, vegetable gardens, orchards and children playing outside.

But once inside when you see seven cots in a room, you quickly realize that this is no ordinary home.

Noah’s Ark Children’s Home look after 30 orphans ranging from seven months to 15 years. Considering they receive state funding irregularly, they are doing very well. Boasting with 13 staff members and a kindergarten teacher who started in January, they also have a jungle gym, games, and bicycles for the kids. Furthermore; they have guinea pigs and rabbits for the children to play with.

And they are expanding with three new buildings: A babies’ house which will accommodate between 15 and 20 babies, a volunteer house with three bedrooms and a crèche with a bedroom and offi ce.

The managers, Sylvie and her husband Remi

Delsouiller, originally from France, started the orphanage 13 years ago at Alôn, but needed to relocate because they expanded so much. The four hectare property on which they are currently situated was purchased through generous donations.

Most of their fresh produce is grown on the property, including an herb garden.

They are very thankful for all the donors, including local businesses, farmers and churches. But, they still fall short. Their wish list includes diapers for the babies, (they use approximately 1 500 diapers monthly), formula milk, non-perishable food, seedlings, clothes, educational toys, irrigation for the orchards, a sandpit and sand. Financial donations are also needed for school fees, all of which is currently paid by Noah’s Ark themselves, including two of the teenage girls in high school.

Most of their furniture is handmade by Remi, and timber donations are always welcome.

Visitors and volunteers are always welcome. Contact Sylvie on 082 573 8383 or [email protected] or visit the website at www.noaharkhome.wordpress.com

HOIST: Grade 12 Learners, Wendy Ramathoka and Peter Mahasha hoist the na onal fl ag during an awareness campaign at KgweKgwe High School last Friday.

Councillor calls on learners to love one anotherA municipal councillor has called on learners to work together to forge a common national identity that is built on mutual respect, tolerance and acceptance.

Councillor Leon Matita of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality was speaking at the National Symbols Awareness Campaign held at KgweKgwe High School in Moleketla, Relela village,

“Ties that bind us are stronger than barriers that divide us,” said Matita. The campaign led by the Department of Arts and Culture was aimed at popularizing the national symbols to learners at schools.

Matita went on to call on learners to take care of foreign nationals. “The bible says in Exodus, do not mistreat or oppress foreigners in any way. Remember you

yourselves were once foreigners in Egypt. Many of our struggle heroes, including Mandela were once accommodated in some of our African countries and they were not mistreated.

“God forbids us from mistreating foreigners.

He says that “if you do, and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry. My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword,” said Matita

Mava Mothiba, project manager from the Department of Arts and Culture said the campaign was important for nation building, and promoting the values embodied in our national symbols.

“As part of this campaign, we are trying to foster constitutional values and national

symbols. We are expecting learners to be able to say the preamble of our constitution. We are also saying that all our schools should be fl ying the national fl ag by end of 2019.

Meanwhile, Odas Ngobeni from Government Communications (GCIS) said that this year’s Freedom Month will be celebrated at a time when we are also celebrating the 60th anniversary of the historic adoption of the Freedom Charter in Kliptown, Soweto.

“As government, we believe the values as espoused in the Freedom Charter still hold true and they are an overall vision for a non-racial and democratic society and many of its values are embedded in the Constitution.

“We are celebrating this year’s Freedom Month under the theme- Celebrating the

Beginning of the Third Decade of our Freedom through Accelerating Radical Economic Transformation,” said Ngobeni.

ACHIEVER: Former Stanford Lake College student, Tercia Jansen van Vuuren, has recently been chosen as one of 54 of the worlds’ most academically excep onal and socially commi ed young people.

Exceptional achievementTERCIA Jansen van Vuuren (neé da Silva) was a Matric student at Stanford Lake College in 2005.

She has recently been chosen as one of 54 of the worlds’ most academically exceptional and socially committed young people as a (Bill) Gates Cambridge Scholar.

This achievement is outstanding and remarkable in itself, but add the fact that her twin sister, Talia da Silva, was also chosen as a Gates Cambridge Scholar in 2013 and is now in the second year of her PhD studies, makes it doubly so!

Such an accolade must surely be a world’s fi rst – not only two past scholars of Stanford, but also twin sisters competing on a global scale based on their intellectual ability, leadership

capacity, academic fi t with Cambridge, and their commitment to improving the lives of others.

Tercia will be doing an MPhil in

Learners hike to obtain bronzeON Thursday morning 9 April, eight learners from Merensky High School started a hike in the Magoebaskloof mountains as part of the requirements to obtain their bronze or silver President’s Award.

The hike kicked off at the well known Woodbush Hut and continued towards the De Hoek hut.

This took them through the beautiful indigenous forests of the Magoebaskloof Hiking Trail. On the second day the group hiked back to the Woodbush Hut, taking a different route.

By then the learners working for the Bronze Award had done

the required 26 km of hiking and returned home.

The silver award candidates then hiked to the O’Conner Memorial Site and stood in amazement next to the famed Eucalyptus tree that claims to be tallest planted tree in the world, before hiking to the Seepsteen Hut where they spent the second night.

On the following day they continued uphill and spent lunchtime at the scenic Waterfall Hut, overlooking the Dap Naudé dam. The group then returned home, very proud that they managed to complete the required 48 km hike.

Koshuis hou braaidag

Plasies geniet hulWowee Woensdag

WOENSDAG 22 April was braaidag vir die koshuisgangers by Hoërskool Merensky.

Sowat 200 leerlinge kon tydens pouse deel in vyf mede-Plasies se talent.

‘n Verskeidenheid musiekitems is aangebied, terwyl

Eerstes 1 elk

IN AKSIE: Jordan Stevens van Merensky vee ‘n bal na veiligheid, tydens ‘n hokkiewedstryd teen Ben Vorster.
