Four Class A, four Class AA troupes receive “starredperformances”After watching, listening, and then indi-

vidually critiquing 16 dramatic pro-ductions over two days, a panel of judgesrated eight of them — four in Class A and fourin Class AA — as “starred performances.”

The festival was conducted atO’Shaughnessy Auditorium on the St.Catherine University campus in St. Paul onFebruary 9 and 10. Paid attendance was 1,211.

Class AThe four schools whose performances

were cited for “starred performances” were(in order of performance) St. Paul Academy& Summit School for Eiffel Tour WeddingParty, Park Rapids Area for A Piece of myHeart, East Central for Second Star to the Right,and Mankato Loyola for Chemical Imbalance:A Jekyll & Hyde Play.

Representing Section 2, Mankato Loyola’s“starred performance” of Chemical Imbalance:A Jekyll & Hyde Play by Lauren Wilson wasdirected by Lori Wolf and CharlotteLena. This is a humorous Jekyll andHyde play. The school was makingits third appearance and earned itssecond “starred” rating. The schoolearned its only other “star” in 1984.

Cast members were MadilineHeidl, Isabel Zwaschka, BeccaKolmeyer, Landon Javens, KitKrmpotich, Emma Goebel, AndrewMcCarty, Luiza Flores, MeganHillesheim, Elizabeth Peller, andTiara Coughlan. Crew memberswere Gabby Hill, Cyemone Nusser,Peter Maclean, Alli Braun, MarleeBuhs, Grace Weir, Meghan Schaub,and Charlotte Lena.

Representing Section 4, St. PaulAcademy & Summit School’s“starred performance” of Eiffel TourWedding Party was written by JeanCocteau and translated by DudleyFitts. The production was directedby Eric Severson. In this play, everywork of the poetic has a hiddenmeaning that each person willinterpret in his or her own way. Thetrue symbol is planned. It emergesby itself and can be as frightening asa drop of poetry under a micro-scope.

Cast members were Ben Atmore,Gemma Yoo, Lilly Ramalingam,Noa Carlson, Sonja Henze, SophLundberg, Maya Shrestha, JonahHarrison, Drew Fawcett, EliseParsons, Max Moen, Sylvie Schifsky,Dorienne Hoven, Phoebe Pannier,

and Nora Povejsil. Crew members were LeaMoore, Tucker Waltenbaugh, Sabrina Rucker,Evan Barnes, and Olivia McCauley.

This was the fifth appearance and fourth“starred” rating for St. Paul Academy &Summit School. The Spartans earned theirprevious “stars” in 1994, 2006, and 2013.

Representing Section 6, Park Rapids Area’s“starred performance” of A Piece of My Heartearned the school its 15th “starred” rating inits 28th appearance. The play, written byShirley Lauro, was directed by JuliannKjenaas and Victoria Harju.

Drawing from the true stories of sixwomen, A Piece of My Heart is a testament tothe strength and courage of the military andcivilian women who served in Vietnam.

Cast members were Myah Schultz, EmilyKjenaas, Amber Schroeder, Coral Johnson,Tori Campbell, Trinah Szafranski, DevinCordahl, Peter Van Batavia, Kenny David,Katelynn Warmbold, Trevor Thelen, ElizabethBradt, Madison Malzahn, Sarah Merfeld, andPaige Leeseberg. Support personnel wereGreta May, Nick Canfield, Keegan Smythe,Luis Valencia, and Madysen Sanders.

Park Rapids Area earned its previous“starred” ratings in 1972, 1975, 1976, 1978,1979, 1982, 1991, 1993, 1994, 2000, 2009,2010, 2011, and 2014.

Representing Section 7, East Central’s“starred performance” of Second Star to theRight by Aaron James was adapted from thenovel Peter & Wendy by J.M. Barrie. Thisyear’s production was directed by KathleenM. Ebnet, Richard Ebnet, and Aaron Jansen.

East Central was making its 10th festivalappearance and earned its sixth “starred” rat-ing. The school earned its other top ratings in1989, 2002, 2004, 2012, and 2015.

In this play, Wendy Darling livesin London with her parents and hertwo younger brothers, John andMichael. When Peter Pan appears inthe middle of the night, looking forhis shadow, the three Darling children are whisked away toNeverland, where pirates do battlewith the lost boys. This version ofthe classic story remains true in spiritto the 1911 novel, Peter and Wendy,bringing to life the magic andmelancholy of J. M. Barrie's vision.

Forrest Masterson. When a close friend dies,Sky is charged with finding a final restingplace for her remains. Traveling cross countryto a variety of designated stops determinedthrough the deceased’s will, Sky embarks on ajourney of bizarreness and realization. He isjoined by the deceased’s mother and anacquaintance as the final spot is chosen in thisrevealing and heart-warming journey filledwith love, acceptance and finally… peace.

Representing Section 8, Alexandria Area’s“starred performance” of Icarus by J.L.Sheridan was directed by Jessica Chipman.Alexandria Area, which was making its ninthappearance, earned its second “starred” rat-ing. Alexandria Area earned its previous“starred” rating in 1951.

Based on the ancient Greek myth, Icarus isa story about an inventor, his son, and thesea.

Representing Section 5, Buffalo’s “starredperformance” of Amber Waves by James Stillwas directed by Tracy Hagstrom Durant andBrandon Aldrich. This was Buffalo’s 11th“starred” rating in 19 appearances.

Amber Waves focuses on a southernMinnesota family struggling to hold on totheir family farm and each other. It zeros inon the effects these problems have had onchildren of farm families while making thecase for the special place of farming in ourcommunities and our nation's well-being. Itsthemes could be just as applicable to thefamilies of stockbrokers, store owners or anyother occupation that suffer drastic down-turns.

Cast members were Emily Kern, KatieSwartzer, Jack Soden, Brandon Bednarek,Madelyn Backes, Nathan Beal, Emily Twardy,Patrick Stonecipher, Calista Cherches, Sophia

Representing Section 2, Minnetonka’s“starred performance” of The Normal Heart byLarry Kramer was directed by Lauren Bartelt.The school was making its 12th appearanceand earned its 11th “starred” rating. The 2011winner of the Tony Award for Best Revival ofa Play, The Normal Heart is a searing dramafocusing on the beginning of the HIV-AIDScrisis in New York City between 1981 and1984. It’s about the public and private indif-ference to the AIDS plague and one man'slonely fight to awaken the world to the crisis.

Cast members were Laird Busselberg,Ryan O’Neill, Carlos Garces, NathanRowbotham, Amanda Tahnk-Johnson,Christine Hwang, Dante Colmenares, StevenOashiem, Rob Dow, Adam Ward, and TonyDe La Vega. No support personnel were listedfor this production.

Minnetonka earned its other previous“starred” ratings in 1969, 2003, 2006, 2008,2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2016.

The Minnesota State High School LeagueState One Act Play Festival does not involvedirect competition. Judges rate the playsaccording to specific criteria, including pace,blocking, costuming, and projection of theplay’s meaning. Each production is limited to10 minutes of stage preparation and 35 min-utes of actual performance.

The judges consult after each productionand then openly critique each in front of thecast, crew, and audience. “Starred perfor -mance” ratings are determined by private

balloting of the judges. One school fromeach of eight sections in each class gets toperform at the state level. There were 304teams that participated in One Act Play thisseason; 206 in Class A and 98 in Class AA.

Spotlight on the Arts Award of Excellence

Each cast and crew member involved withthese three productions was also presented aSpotlight on the Arts Award of Excellencerecognition pin. This is a fine arts recognition

award created by Wells Fargo, the League’spremier sponsor, in cooperation with theLeague.

The casts and crews were also awarded ahandsome acrylic trophy incorporating theSpotlight on the Arts logo.
