St. Anselm Catholic Church

April 17, 2016 Fourth Sunday of Easter

My sheep hear my voice; they follow me. I give them eternal life (John 10:27-30)

St. Anselm’s Parish is a Catholic community formed by families, individuals and clergy that worship together, celebrate the sacramental life of the Church, and seek to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ

everyday. We welcome, serve, and educate.

GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY In the Gospel this Sunday Jesus says, ‘My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). As we hear the voice of Jesus, our supreme Good Shepherd, and follow him, we are

also spiritually empowered to become like the good shepherds in our own way. From the day of our Baptism, we all take part in the triple function of the common priesthood of Christ as priest, prophet and shepherd. Each one of us can be a good shepherd by 1. taking good care of those who are entrusted to us, 2. being a good and exemplary parent to our children, 3. being a good and dedicated leader in our own way (at family, work place, Church, neighborhood, and society at large).

Today is also the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Let us pray for an increase in vocations to the permanent diaconate, priesthood, and consecrated life in our parish and Archdiocese. According to the statistics conducted by Centre for Applied Research in The Apostolate, the number of Priestly Ordinations in the United States went down from 994 in 1965 to 515 in 2015. Pope Francis recently released the post-synodal apostolic exhortation on love in the family - AMORIS LAETITIA (AL). Pope Francis says that “the family is the place where parents become their children’s first teachers in the faith” (AL, no.16), and “the work of handing on the faith to children, in the sense of facilitating its expression and growth, helps the whole family in its evangelizing mission” (AL, no. 289). There-fore, let us support and encourage the children/grandchildren of our families to grow in faith and to discern if they have vocation to priesthood or consecrated life. Let us also pray for our seminarians, priests and pastor. Happy Good Shepherd Sunday and God bless you all. Fr. Chris Arockiaraj, Acting St. Anselm Pastor

THE SHEPHERD’S FLOCK In Christian art, the earliest depictions of Jesus Christ were not of his crucifixion or of his resurrection. The first known renderings of Jesus show him as the Good Shepherd, the image put before us in today’s readings. In the Gospel passage Jesus reveals that he is the shepherd and his followers are his “flock.” In the first and second readings, we are told more about the flock. The passage from Acts assures us that both Jews and Gentiles are called to follow Jesus. It is faith, not birth-right, that makes us part of the company of believers. In the passage from the book of Revelation we learn that the flock that fol-lows this Lamb of God will also be washed in his blood. They will endure a time of trial before they enjoy eternal life. Be as-sured of the promise, we are told, but know there is a price to be paid.

DROPPING IN TO JOY

So, what is joy to us? If joy is a what—we are fools,

If a who - Well, then, there’s hope.

You may think

That joy just now dropped in - The poet knows better -

We were just too dead to notice!

While we have been off wandering In the realms of the dead,

Chasing happiness in other gods, Joy has remained quietly at home.

Will you not take a moment

From your erstwhile pursuits, Your busy days,

And drop in to see your Joy?

Parishioner, Garth M. Stanton, pray for him

Please Pray for Vocations.

Call to Vocations Philip Gerard Johnson went to the Naval Academy in 2002, straight after high school, graduating after four years. In high school he “wasn’t particularly devout”, though as a child he used to like dressing up as a priest. Nowadays he is one of that burgeoning number of young Catholics who have grown to love the Extraordi-nary Form of the Mass. It was while Philip was a sophomore, aged 19, that he started hearing a call to the priesthood. “Nobody’s born a priest,” he says: “It’s a decision you have to follow.” Like many young men, though, Philip had other things on his mind. “I met a young Catholic girl and decided that perhaps I was called to marriage. I was very young and I put the priesthood on hold. I courted this girl for about two years and I still felt called to the priesthood by that time. We spoke about vocation. She knew about my attraction to the priesthood. It’s part of discernment I think, like visiting the seminary is part of discernment, spending time with priests is part of discernment, but I think over time it becomes apparent what’s deep in your heart. “I would be at Mass with her – we’d go to Mass all the time and I felt like I should be at the altar, I didn’t feel like I should be at the pews with the family. I identified with the priest. It was something that wouldn’t go away. My spiritual director calls it the ‘still small voice in your heart’. It’s just something that’s always with you, the calling in your heart, the priesthood.” This period sounds like a time of uncertainty and dis-comfort. Philip’s girlfriend was convinced that her vo-cation was to marriage – she did go on to marry and is still friends with Philip – while Philip thought his was to the priesthood. “I had to be honest and we had to go our separate ways,” he says. But Philip was still “torn”, as he says, “lukewarm” in his discernment, in a way many young seminarians may recognize. He was acutely mindful of the sacrifice that every priest must make. “When you’re with priests you’re very sure you want to be a priest, you’re very open about it with them, but then you see a beautiful girl after Mass and by that point you’re only just thinking about a vocation, but probably not! I think once I decided to stop courting and to actu-ally follow it, it became public that I was becoming a priest, and it became a lot easier. The first step is to have people know about it, not to have it hidden from you. A lot of people are ashamed of it and I guess I was too.” This is part of an article that first appeared in the print edition of The Catholic Herald (22/5/09) Perhaps you or someone in your life is hearing the call from GOD to a vocation in the Catholic Church. He may be calling YOU. Do you desire a deeper personal relationship with Jesus Christ? Have people have told you that you would make a good priest/nun? Is going to Mass and Adoration very important part of your faith life? Do you keep thinking about becoming a religious brother/sister or parish priest ? Find out, ask questions.
