As we prepare to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Christ the King in 2021, our bulletin will feature monthly testimonies from parishioners to reflect on the theme of “Building His Kingdom Together.” By Claudia Costilla I was born in Mexico and raised in San Juan, Texas known as (the Valley). My mother and father are the pillars of our family of seven children. They did an amazing job raising us and always making sure we had a faith life and went to church.

After college, I decided to take a break and visit my younger brother, who at the time was studying at OSU. This was my first time to Ohio and everything seemed so different including the catholic parishes. A few days before my trip came to an end, my brother asked if I would consider moving here and living with him. Now, you have to understand I was glued to the hip with my family back home and this decision was not taken lightly. Ultimately, I decided to stay and that decision changed my life forever. Sunday came around and I knew I had to go to mass, so I did some research and after one visit, decided on Christ the King. Immediately as I walked in, the hospitality group made me feel welcome. I finally heard a choir in my language like back home and the homily was touching. After mass, the priest made sure to introduce himself and little did I know he would have such an impact on my life.

One day my mother called and asked where I was volunteering, I responded "nowhere". She was very upset, as Mexican mothers get from time to time. She knew I had been an active volunteer back home and I needed to get involved. That night I prayed to God for some guidance and he answered. A few weeks later I was attending evening bible studies twice a week, starting singing in the Spanish choir, and became a PSR teacher. Through my involvement, I met great people who became a big part of my life.

Life as I knew it was great, but two years after moving here I was involved in a horrible hit and run car accident. A drunk driver hit my car from behind and I spun out of control. At the moment I thought this is it, I'm going to die. I closed my eyes and prayed to St. Francis to protect me. Once I gained consciousness, I found myself in the back of an ambulance heading to the hospital, but I was ALIVE. Life as I knew it would never be the same. The months of physical therapy were difficult. Day-to-day tasks became hard to accomplish and I felt helpless. I felt as if God had abandoned me with this life-altering tragedy, but little did I know he had put people in my life to help me. I didn't have family here other than my brother, but my friends from church were always here to help me. They lifted me when I thought life had no more meaning.

My friends urged me to attend mass again and I listened. I went back and I poured my heart and soul in front of the altar. I told God at the time, you gave me a second chance and now I give you my life to serve you and build your kingdom. Again, he answered that prayer and put me to work. I got involved with the parish council, youth group, ministry of the rosary, PSR and I am a (CERS) missionary servant of the word with the sisters. I love being part of every ministry.

I understand now that God has given me fulfillment, purpose, and joy in life. I am not perfect, I am still a sinner, but God loves me despite my flaws and imperfections. He has shown Himself to me in his word and through prayer. I thank God for the parish of Christ the King, for Father David Schalk, the community that has given me a place to call home and people I call family.

BUILDING HIS KINGDOM TOGETHERPreparing for our 75th Anniversary

Mientras nos preparamos para celebrar el 75o aniversario de Cristo Rey en 2021, el boletín contará con testimonios mensuales de los feligreses para reflexionar sobre el tema de "Juntos Construimos Su Reino". Claudia Costilla Nací en México y me crié en San Juan, Texas conocido como (el Valle). Mi madre y mi padre son los pilares de nuestra familia y tuvieron que estar con siete hijos. Hicieron un trabajo increíble criándonos y siempre se aseguraron de que tuviéramos una vida de fe y fuéramos a la iglesia.

Después de la universidad, decidí tomarme un descanso y visitar a mi hermano menor que en ese momento estaba estudiando en la OSU. Era la primera vez que venía a Ohio y todo parecía tan diferente, incluso la parroquia católica. Unos días antes de que mi viaje llegara a su fin, mi hermano me preguntó si consideraría mudarme aquí y vivir con él. Ahora, tienes que entender que estaba pegado a la cadera con mi familia en casa y esta decisión se tomaría a la ligera. Al final decidí quedarme y esta decisión cambió mi vida para siempre.

El domingo llegó y supe que tenía que ir a misa, así que investigué un poco y después de una visita me decidí por Cristo Rey. Inmediatamente cuando entré al grupo de hospitalidad me hizo sentir bienvenido, finalmente escuché un coro en mi idioma como en casa y la homilía fue conmovedora. Después de la misa, el sacerdote se aseguró de que yo supiera su nombre y poco sabía que tendría tal impacto en mi vida hoy.

Un día mi madre me llamó y me preguntó dónde era voluntario, y yo le respondí "en ninguna parte". Estaba muy disgustada como las madres mexicanas se ponen de vez en cuando. Sabía que yo había sido un voluntario activo en casa y necesitaba involucrarme. Esa noche recé a Dios para que me guiara y me respondió. Unas semanas más tarde estaba asistiendo a los estudios bíblicos vespertinos dos veces por semana, empecé a firmar en el coro español y me convertí en un profesor de PSR y a través de mi participación, conocí a grandes personas que se convirtieron en una gran parte de mi vida.

Pensaba que la vida tal como la conocía era genial, pero dos años después de mudarme aquí me vi envuelto en un horrible accidente de coche con atropello y fuga. Un conductor ebrio me golpeó por detrás y mi coche giró fuera de control. En el momento en que pensé que esto era todo, voy a morir y cerré los ojos y recé a San Francisco para que me protegiera. Una vez que recuperé el conocimiento, estaba en la parte trasera de la ambulancia y me dirigí al hospital, pero estaba VIVA. La vida como la conocí nunca será la misma. Los meses siguientes la fisioterapia fue difícil, las tareas cotidianas se volvieron difíciles de realizar y me sentí impotente. Sentí como si Dios me hubiera abandonado con esta tragedia que altera la vida, pero poco sabía que había puesto gente en mi vida para ayudarme. No tenía familia aquí aparte de mi hermano, pero mis amigos de la iglesia siempre estaban aquí para ayudarme. Me levantaron cuando pensé que la vida no tenía más sentido.

Mis amigos me instaron a asistir a misa de nuevo y yo escuché. Volví y puse mi corazón y mi alma delante del altar. Le dije a Dios en su momento que me dio una segunda oportunidad y ahora le doy mi vida para servirle y construir su reino. Una vez más, respondió a esa oración y me puso a trabajar. No estoy involucrada en el consejo parroquial, grupo de jóvenes, ministerio del rosario, PSR y soy una (CERS) sierva misionera de la palabra con la hermana y me encanta ser parte de cada ministerio.

Ahora entiendo que Dios me ha dado satisfacción, propósito y alegría en la vida. No soy perfecto, sigo siendo un pecador, pero Dios me ama a pesar de mis defectos e imperfecciones. Se me ha mostrado en su palabra y a través de la oración. Doy gracias a Dios por la parroquia de Cristo Rey, por el padre David Schalk, la comunidad que me ha dado un lugar al que llamar hogar y a la gente que llamo familia.
