Fowlerville track boys take home medals at Honor Roll Meet

By Coach Dan Coon We may have set a new record for Fowlerville. The greater Lansing area takes the best of the best track athletes and has

who is the best. To even make it to the meet is an honor with such a great group of running schools in the Lansing area to choose from. The boys team was lucky enough to have two different guys selected and both of them in two events. We walked

Great Job Galen Neuroth and Adam Coon. Way to raise the bar for others to strive to reach and a great way to let others know that Fowlerville does exist.

Boys TrackTyler Burkhardt & Jake Olechonowicz

Tyler Burkhardt, sophomore distance runner, was voted to be our most improved boys track athlete. He showed a great work ethic all year and his personal best time kept getting better throughout the year. His attitude in practices and meets was outstanding. Tyler shows great promise for the future.Outgoing senior , Jake Olechonowicz, came into his own this year. From where he started at four years ago, at best, he was just an average athlete working hard. Jake is a great example of what hard work can do over a period of time. Each year, and each week this year he gave his best in practice and in meets. He was a quiet leader on the team. His times dropped

been a honor to watch your growth as a young man and a track runner the last few years.

Michigan Senate ReportBy Joe Hune,22nd District

Get out and enjoy Michigan! In a state with rich outdoors tradition, many Michiganders will be enjoying the warm summer weather in the great outdoors. One of my family’s favorite pastimes is camping. Michigan owns more land than any state east of the Mississippi, roughly 12 percent of Michigan’s land base, making for ample room to enjoy nature. The Michigan Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR) provides many resources on their website— www.michigan.gov/dnr recreation locator, campground and harbor registration and information on boating. Also, next time you renew your license, consider the Recreation Passport program introduced by the DNR. By purchasing the Recreation Passport when you renew your license plate registration, you’ll experience state parks, recreation areas, state forest campgrounds, non-motorized trails, boat launches and hundreds of Passport Perks shopping discounts from around the state.

Another helpful website, organized by the Michigan Association of RV’s, Parks and Campgrounds is http://www.michcampgrounds.com/. This site provides links that will help you to

RV camping locations and cabins and rentals. The 22nd District itself has numerous opportunities

to get out and enjoy Michigan’s beautiful summer weather.

hunting, swimming and much more. Nearby Kensington Metropark, a unit of the Huron-Clinton Metroparks system located between Milford and South Lyon, provides area residents with many opportunities including an 18-hole regulation golf course, a disc golf course, toboggan hill, a nature center, a farm learning center, picnic areas, beaches, and boat rentals. The website for the park is www.metroparks.com or can be reached at (248) 685-1561.

Student of the Week: Josh SchaeferBy: Michael Stobierski

This week’s “Student of the Week” is Josh Schaefer. Josh was a senior this year at FHS. His parents are Todd and Joann; he has two siblings, Abigail who is 14 and Josiah who turns 8 this month. Josh’s schedule consists of Physics, Psychology, AP US History, Newspaper, AP Lit & Comp, and Film & Mu-sic as Lit. When asked what his favorite class is, Josh chose Newspaper because it has all his buddies in it with him and he gets to use Photoshop. Also when he had to choose who his favorite teacher was it was too hard to decide because he says they are all way too awesome. After high school he plans to attend LCC for a couple of years then transfer somewhere (preferably Western Michigan) to study Technical Theatre and Design. If Josh could change one thing about FHS it would be that he could listen to his music all the time in class and not just some of the time. His favorite thing about FHS is getting to see all of his friends from theatre and tech crew, he says that they are all his family and it’s important that he gets to see them. Advice Josh would like to give to underclassmen would be, “Don’t blink; high school is way too short. Your friends are the best part about high school.” Out of school, Josh is a part of the tech crew, and he plays guitar, and loves to listen to music. He loves to hang out with his friends, they play Mine Craft and paintball together. Once Josh has graduated,

he will miss being a part of the tech crew the most and spending time in the PAC. Mrs. Masserant nominated Josh and said, “He is an in-credibly hard working stu-dent and deeply involved in tech crew this year as sound director in addition to hav-

ing multiple AP classes. He has volunteered his time to work sound/mics with the play after school almost every day and has worked the additional events in the PAC as lead sound engineer. He is training and overseeing new tech crew mem-bers and is an excellent role model for them. He is detail

for our sound system usage. In addition to all that, he is just plain NICE all the time.” Mrs. King mentioned, “Josh works very well with the cast of the play and stays on task, even when faced with an incredible amount of distraction.” Christopher Blum, one of Josh’s close friends had this to say about Josh; “With Josh around, there’s never a dull mo-ment. Even when he’s working, there’s always something in-teresting happening when Josh is near.” Josh loves to spend time with his family as well, they go camping together to spend quality time. Josh’s favorite movie is “The Dark Night Rises” and his favorite band is Skillet. When Josh is relaxing and watching TV he likes to watch either MASH or Person of Interest, and his favorite game to play is Mine Craft. Overall, Josh said that he is surprised he received the Student of the Week nomination; he admits that he is not exactly the best student. Still it is a great achievement to be this week’s Stu-dent of the Week! Great job Josh!

Schools

Talent’ Fowlerville Schools celebrated another ‘Showcase of Talent’, sponsored by FACTO (Fowlerville Academic Creative Talented Organization) on Tuesday, May 7 from 5:00 to 7:30 pm, where teachers submitted awesome and outstanding student work over the past school year. Some of the projects ranged from kindergarten animal reports, to second grade snowman

school senior projects. Each year, FACTO volunteers work to create a special evening for students, parents, and teachers to honor student accomplishments in the classroom. With well over 250 projects submitted by teachers this year, volunteers diligently collected projects from each school, labeled them by subject area, and hosted parents and students in participating in showing off students’ best work. Teachers sort through class projects in determining the most creative, most unique, greatest workmanship, and just around “awesome” demonstration of learning and skills. Organizing volunteers for this project include Julia Keider, Showcase Coordinator and High School English Teacher; Grace Damerow, Technology Director for Fowlerville Schools; Sheila Larson, Curriculum Director for Fowlerville Schools; Gifted-Talented Coordinators Nancy Myers, Sue Harper, and Amy Maurer; and Barb Parker, Susan Baumgartner and Iris Winiarski, FACTO parent representatives. There were also several students who helped make the evening a success, including Kayla Rodgers, who took students’ photographs with their projects; Robert Williams, who played the trombone; and Chess Club members from the Junior High School.

The Showcase of Talent is an annual event held in early May. In addition to the Showcase, FACTO hosts parent meetings on engaging students in higher-level learning, holds workshops on Advanced Placement testing, and encourages school-based clubs throughout the primary grades. For more information about FACTO’s Showcase of Talent, contact Julia Keider at [email protected] or Barb Parker at [email protected] for information about FACTO parent involvement.

A life well-lived...In 1938 she married her childhood sweetheart. They probably fell in

love the first time they met. He proposed on the edge of a frozen pond in the middle of winter. She said yes and for the next 20 years, she took care of his parents, her parents and her children in a small farmhouse.

There was never a Great Depression in her home because of her hard work, her unwavering faith in God and her positive nature.

Senior Spotlight- Samuel Dmitri GloverBy: Amanda Crandall

Dmitri Glover is the son of Beth and Greg Glover and brother to Sasha Glover who is currently a junior at Webberville High School. Glover has attended Webberville Community Schools his entire life. Glover has been a great student, friend, son, and brother. “Dmitri is always a great person to be around and is a great brother, and I can’t wait to see what he does in the future,” said Sasha Glover. Glover enjoys working with animals in the Ag Barn, reading books, history and FFA activities. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his friends and works a part-time job in Webberville. Glover has been involved in FFA for six years, track for two and a half years and Spanish club for one year. Dmitri sai that he plans on attending Lansing Community College. A big inspiration to him during his high school career was Mrs. Colleen Scott Keiser. “Dmitri has a great sense of humor and has been a very devoted member of the FFA,” said FFA Advisor Colleen Scott Keiser. “His interest in social studies and social issues sets him apart from his peers. His willingness to take on new challenges will carry him far in life.” When Glover graduates there are a few things he will miss about high school. “I will miss not seeing my friends every day, all of the FFA events we have, and meeting all of the new people through the FFA,” said Glover. Glover’s advice to his underclassmen is “Do all of your work and turn it in on time, get involved with everything that you can and have fun.”

known Dmitri for 14 years. “Dmitri is very willing to help others and make a difference in his school and community. I am proud of Dmitri’s accomplishments in FFA. He has grown academically and physically over the years, it seems like just yesterday Greg Glover was excited about adopting a son, I am proud I got to witness and watch this young man grow.” Depue said. Glover will be extremely missed by his peers. “I’m going to miss his great sense of humor, and his persistence to always make someone smile,” said senior Beverlyn Salva.

The “Buzz” on Honey Bees As far back as 1962 when Rachel Carson’s book,

for the future of the honeybee. But it was among many environmental concerns brought about by the release of countless chemicals against nearly every supposed problem in our insect and plant world. But the well being of bees didn’t rank very high on the list of things to be highly concerned about and until recently made very few headlines. Now things have changed. In the half century since Miss Carson’s book and

remembered that honey bees didn’t just make honey but were needed to pollinate nearly all the food crops of the world – and that they were dying at a rate of close to 50% each year. I haven’t seen a honeybee in my

jackets or bumblebees now, but honeybees that are acknowledged as the primary pollinators for just about all our crops. The Environmental Protection Agency acknowledges that traces of dangerous chemicals as well as a few of the tiny mites that were known to be part of the problem at least, remain a common presence in hives today. The problem is, the EPA seems to be saying, that fussing with those known chemical mixtures may result in even worse problems later. In the meantime, folks like you and me, depending on the numbers of surviving honey been in their areas, are realizing smaller and smaller harvests from their little backyard gardens. What can we do to help? Are there other insects that could be encouraged that could pick up the pollination in our backyard patches until the

thus lowering the considerable expense of actually purchasing swarms of bees, mostly from Europe. Could some kind of a swarm rental system be implemented for a neighborhood or subdivision? It seems to me we need to be seriously working on the problems of our bees rather than developing a new phone or hand held computer every six months. You can’t eat those items but we can and must eat those products the honeybee does so much to provide. It also

seems to me when we learn about a serious problem,

As for us neighborhood growers, we’d like to at least be able to go about growing a few slicer tomatoes, peppers, etc., without just watching our plants getting larger and our yield getting smaller each year. I’ve even heard a few non-thinking individuals react to the shrinking bee numbers by saying, “No bees? Good. Now we won’t get stung so often.” But they might want

Fowlerville grads part of band performing for July 4th celebration

The Modern Day Drifters was formed in 2009 when William Shadrick (lead singer, songwriter, rhythm guitarist) left a steady job as a rhythm guitar player in a popular country band to take the next step of performing original material as well as their fans’ favorites. The Drifters deliver exciting shows, always keeping their crowd dancing and wanting more. With Cris Pratt (lead guitar, harmonies) Pete Kittle (bass) and Ryan Scott (drums, harmonies). Their sound is described as a cross between Brad Paisley, Eric Church, Alan Jackson, and their own style of country music. William and Ryan are 1999 Fowlerville High School graduates. The Modern Day Drifters has a new, young sound that also stays true to their roots. “It’s always a great feeling seeing the crowd dance and sing along with the greatest hits, but when I see them do the same with my originals, there are no words to describe what I feel. We truly have fun doing what we love,” said Shadrick, adding, “Whether I write about love, heartbreak, life or cold beer, I’m always writing. It’s how I handle life…every aspect of it. If there’s a story to be told, I want to tell it!” They are currently in the studio working on their new album, “Whirlwind of Emotion,” which is expected to be released this fall. “Working with Kerry Adams from Adams Audio Works is a blast! We’re all family! Their single, “Dark Windows,” was released to radio on May 20 and is currently available on iTunes. You can see The Modern Day Drifters perform live at the opening night of Chelsea’s Sights and Sounds on June 6, Fowlerville Fireworks July 4 celebration, Saline’s Wicked Kickin’ Hoedown October 26, etc. For a full list of upcoming shows, check out their website at www.themoderndaydrifters.com
