In 2002, our community took a leap of faith in building the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center, and now, ten years later, we invite you to join with us in a season of celebration. For many, it seems like only yesterday that we were asked to take on the challenge of building a theater in the heart of downtown Appleton for the benefit of the greater Fox Cities community and Northeast Wisconsin. There were so many people involved in making this dream a reality from the original board members to a dedicated team of architects and tradespeople and more than 2,700 businesses, individuals, families and foundations who contributed to the Capital Campaign. We would like to thank everyone who believed in this organization from the ground up. This remarkable theater would not exist today without your support.

Our vision for the 10th Anniversary Season is to thank the Fox Cities community for its resounding enthusiasm. If you have friends or neighbors, parents or children who have yet to discover the Center, please invite them to experience all the arts can offer with an upcoming performance or community event.

The 10th Anniversary Season is both a time for reflection and excitement for the future. Imagine how different our community might have been over the last decade without a place like the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center to come together, experience the performing arts and enjoy performances that ignite our imaginations. Now multiply that vitality by another 10 years in the spotlight, and imagine the possibilities for the future.

Thank you for making the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center –

SStart with an unprecedented $8 million gift to the community from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Add the keen guidance of a board of directors including some of the area’s most influential leaders. Stir in a $45 million Capital Campaign with 2,700 donations from businesses, individuals, families and foundations and hotel room tax revenues from 14 municipalities. Top it off with 3.3 million pounds of reinforcing steel, 21,000 cubic yards of concrete and 148 miles of electrical wire. Set it in the heart of downtown Appleton to rise in only 31 months of construction.

The end result? A world-class theater known as the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center.

BRICK BY BRICK Looking back on the history of the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center, it’s a miracle that the building even exists. The challenge gift by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans had one specific caveat; the Center had to be completed in time for Thrivent Financial for Lutheran’s centennial celebration in November 2002. Even as the cameras arrived for an impromptu press conference announcing plans for the Center, the clock was already ticking.

Mayor Tim Hanna, the City of Appleton and the Appleton Redevelopment Authority were quickly on board, dedicating $4.2 million to acquire the land in the 400 block of College Avenue and

prepare the site for construction. A leadership team was being formed under the guidance of local businessman John F. Bergstrom, who became the first chairman of the board in November 1999. Plans were being drawn by Zeidler Roberts Partnership even as The Boldt Company broke ground in May 2000. Oscar C. Boldt, chairman of The Boldt Company, closely oversaw a whirlwind of construction. “As a builder the best moment of any project is when you can stand back and have that immense feeling of accomplishment. You have a moment when you say to yourself, ‘I had something to do with this.’ I think everyone in this community can have that experience at the Fox Cities P.A.C. because it was a huge idea, and every single person did their part and continues to make this vision a reality.”

It’s astounding to think that even as the concrete was poured for the foundation, the architects were still putting the finishing touches on the theater’s design.

This unique combination, a secret blend of passion and perseverance, became a recipe for success that has shaped the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center into a gathering place for the community, to connect with one another and experience the performing arts right here in the Fox Cities.

The best moment of any project is when you can stand back and have that immense feel ing of accomplishment. . .I think ever yone in this community can have that exper ience at the Fox Cit ies P. A .C .

8 • 10th Anniversary Report to the Community8 • 10th Anniversary Report to the Community

The thrill of being in the audience is only second to the amazing experience of performing onstage in the Fox Cities. Since opening, the presence of the Center has bolstered the arts community, promoting local arts organizations, drawing new interest and providing access to state of the art spaces.

The Fox Valley Symphony is just one of the arts groups you can find on the Center’s calendar. Fox Valley Symphony Conductor Brian Groner believes that the venue has had a positive influence on his organization saying, “Its world-class facilities and professional staff have helped us grow artistically and allowed us to increase our service to the community.” In fact, the Fox Valley Symphony has made the Center its home as a resident partner.

FOX CITIES VOICESFrom the White Heron Choral to the Appleton Boychoir, many of the Fox Cities’ leading choral groups have been making melodies at the Fox Cities P.A.C. For the past nine years, the Fox Cities Choral Music Festival has featured the area’s rising choral talent. Nearly 1,600 students from 15 high schools have performed for friends and family and discovered the community spotlight.

A STAGE FOR GOODSince opening, more than 200 local businesses and nonprofits have found their way to the stage, choosing the Fox Cities P.A.C. for major events. The Center has welcomed all types of people to a variety of events from speakers like Nobel Peace Prize winner Mikhail Gorbachev, women raising awareness for heart disease at the American Red Cross’ Go Red for Women and

graduating students from Fox Valley Technical College taking their first steps to a new future.

The Trauma Center at Theda Clark and the Theda Clark Medical Center Foundation took their powerful outreach program P.A.R.T.Y. (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth) to a new level by hosting the annual event at the Fox Cities P.A.C. Since 2005, more than 31,000 students have witnessed the importance of responsible driving and making positive decisions.

Even offstage the Center brings people together. From fundraisers such as The Boys and Girls Club’s Vintage in the Valley to the Appleton Area School District’s prom and memorable weddings, the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center has had the extraordinary honor of serving our community.

Wisconsin Broadway premieres are a huge draw at the Center. In 2007, Disney’s THE LION KING attracted more than

88,000 people with 35% attending for the first time. Thirteen thousand ticket buyers traveled

more than 60 miles to see the landmark theater event.

The Center’s impact on quality of life in the Fox Cities amounts to more than just a fun night out. A region’s quality of life is also influenced by economics, and the arts and culture industry is making a bigger impact than you might think.

According to Americans for the Arts, Fox Cities P.A.C. event attendees spend $19.45* per person not including the cost of a ticket. The money ripples throughout the community as theatergoers fill up the car with gas, dine out before a show or shop downtown.

GROWING TOURISM IN THE FOX CITIESSome of those dollars find their way to the Fox Cities from across Wisconsin and the Midwest. Pam Seidl from the Fox Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau believes that, “The Fox Cities Performing Arts Center’s ability to draw major Broadway touring productions has elevated the awareness of the Fox Cities area as a tourism destination.” On average 25 percent of the Center’s ticket buyers travel from outside of the Fox Cities each year.

The sum of local and tourism dollars adds up to support the local economy making the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center a positive economic generator in the Fox Cities.

In just 10 years the Fox Cities P. A.C. has generated $178 million* in economic activity.

10 • 10th Anniversary Report to the Community

AA Bemis Company Education Series performance is a sight to see at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center. Throughout the school year, buses line up outside the Center filled with students ready to experience their classroom lessons brought to life onstage. As the doors open, the Fox Cities P.A.C. begins an intricately choreographed theater experience. Within minutes, the seats are filled and Thrivent Financial Hall echoes with anticipation. That is, until the lights go down and the curtain rises on the day’s lesson.

Students are captivated, and it’s easy to see why. The language of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet is so much clearer onstage. Stories like The Very Hungry Caterpillar open a world of imagination when told with black light puppetry. Other performances depict adventures in diversity or history, traveling through time to give voice to the women of the Titanic or help students understand the courage of Civil Rights leaders like Rosa Parks.

EMPHASIS ON LEARNINGFor Bemis Company Education Series events, the emphasis is on learning. Educators like Abby Schmidt from Greenville Middle School know that the lessons they teach in the classroom have new meaning onstage. “Last year, we saw Ladysmith Black Mambazo, so prior to the show in our chorus classes we prepared by listening to excerpts of their music, watching videos to see their dance style, and learning about the history and culture of South Africa.” In fact, Schmidt says, “We try to take all of our students to the Fox Cities P.A.C. at least once during their time at our school.”

Education is a cornerstone of the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center’s mission-based programs, and as the Center celebrates its 10th Anniversary, it’s also celebrating more than 218,000 students who have experienced learning through the performing arts.

Many of our students would not be able to exper ience the ar ts at the Center i f i t were not for the Bemis Company Education Ser ies.

Learning doesn’t have to end with graduation, and at the Fox Cities P.A.C. there are so many subjects to explore. Each year, the Center hosts free Community Engagement Activities such as preshow discussions, postshow chats with the cast and kids activities for titles like Little House on the Prairie. Outside of the Center, community

members can take part in free dance workshops, group discussions and library events. To date, 70,000 people have had a richer arts experience thanks to community engagement activities.

If you’ve been to the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center, you have probably been assisted by a volunteer. Wearing their vests proudly, more than 400 volunteers ensure that your experience at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center is top-notch.

For volunteers like Sylvia King who have been with the Center since opening night, their work is just as important today as it was ten years ago. To King, “The most important job is greeting. I love to greet. I love to say hello to people. And when they leave I always try to say goodnight or goodbye to them. I think it’s important that the guests know that we appreciate them and want to make sure that they’re having a good time.”

ENJOYING EVERY MINUTE Ten years later, Fox Cities P.A.C. volunteers are still focused on creating the world-class customer experience. Since opening, volunteers have donated more than 266,466 hours, and they’re having more fun than ever! With social tour groups to Chicago and New York, Green Bay Packers potlucks and social outings, the volunteers bring a sense of community to every ticket scanned, guest ushered, door opened and envelope stuffed.

As a nonprofit organization, the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center is only as strong as the community it serves. Thank you for investing in this spectacular building, this organization, and the power of the performing arts to build a stronger future. With your support, the

To learn more about volunteering at the Fox Cities P.A.C., visit foxcitiespac.com and click on Support and Sustain.

Did you know that the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center is a nonprofit organization? If your eyes glaze over at the mention of tax code terminology, you’re not alone.

Nonprofits across the country, especially arts and culture groups like the Center, face a funding challenge as they balance the cost of high-quality community enrichment and the bottom lines of business in today’s economy.

In financial terms, one measure of success can be found in the percentage of an organization’s operating budget that ties directly to quality programming. Over the past 10 years, the Center has dedicated more than 75 percent of funding resources to fulfilling its mission in our community. That’s 10 percent higher than the national industry average!

In the nonprofit world, organizations also follow a philosophy of reinvesting in the community they serve. It’s part of a larger business plan commonly referred to as a community investment model, and it includes support beyond ticket sales and event revenues. It means that the money invested in this organization stays in the community and supports the arts now and in the future.

S U P P O RT I N G T H E DREAM N O W A N D F O R FUTURE GENERATIONS

CAPITAL CAMPAIGNThe Fox Cities Performing Arts Center was built with funds from

a $45 million Capital Campaign that involved more than 2,700 businesses, individuals, families and foundations.

By planning ahead, the founding board members and the generous contributors to the Capital Campaign insured that the Center

would have a strong start in Northeast Wisconsin.

ANNUAL PARTNER CAMPAIGN

During the 2004/05 Season, the Center launched the Annual Partner Campaign. Funds support subsidized

mission-based programs like the education series, the Arts Alive! series, community engagement activities, and community

use of the facility. With yearly contributions, Annual Partners make

an investment in the Center and receive great benefits.KEYSTONE ENDOWMENT

AND OPERATIONS FUND The recently announced Keystone Campaign will ensure the Fox Cities P.A.C.’s long-term viability.

Gifts to The Keystone Campaign are invested, and as the investments grow they fuel the organization’s mission now and

for future generations. The goal for this campaign is $25 million.

BUILDING RESERVE FUND

An organizational building reserve fund is another piece of the

Fox Cities P. A.C.’s nonprofit fundraising. As the Annual Partner and Keystone Campaigns

grow, the Center will earmark cash reserves for projects and improvements, ensuring that

its state of the art building will continue to serve our community for generations to come.
