FP Residents Find Their Inner Child at Hammonds Candy Factory

Hammond’s Candy offerscomplimentary candyfactory tours. They are funwhile educational at thesame time. Thousands ofpeople across the worldhave seen howHammond’s, handcraftedcandy are pulled, twistedand shaped by hand, justas if it was still in 1920,when Hammond’s Candywas first founded by Carl Hammond himself.

Carl Hammond was inspired to become anentrepreneur after creating his first original candy,Honey Kokos, chocolate topped with shreddedcoconut. In 1930 Carl, invented the bite sizedmarshmallow surrounded by caramel, namedMitchell Sweet, after his friend. Mitchell Sweetbecame a signature candy that still remains today.

Franklin Park had 8 residents join the tour atHammonds Candy on Thursday, January 16, 2014.The residents learned and viewed how candy ismade from the basic ingredients of sugar, corn syrupand water, to delicious lollipops and ribbon candy toname a few. They still use the original ribbon candycrank machine, very interesting to watch! Our tourgrouped together with a 3rd grade class and thatmade the trip even more special. When talking aboutthe outing Sigrid Zunkernoted “My favorite partwas watching the littlekid’s excitement of seeingthe candy made! I can’twait to bring my ownGrandchildren here.” Butthe best part of all you maywonder? The giant “opps”candy canes we got at theconclusion of the tour, yum!
