PREAMBLE

This document intends to collect the potential of the Andalusian entities within the 6th

call for proposals of the Seventh Framework Programme in “Food, Agriculture and

Fisheries and Biotechnology” (FP7-KBBE-2012).

In Andalusia, “Food, Agriculture and Fisheries and Biotechnology” represents one of

the main economic activities. The agricultural sector in Andalusia accounts for 4.5% of

the Gross Value Added and employs 9% of the active population, figures that both

double and triple the Spanish and European records, respectively1. In addition,

Andalusia is the second Spanish region in number of biotech companies2 and

represents 15% of Spain Agroindustry, only behind Catalonia3.

The motivation of this document for CITAndalucía has been to turn the interests and

needs in research and development of Andalusian entities involved in this field into

opportunities for short-term collaboration in FP7 projects.

The document gathers the Expressions of Interests (EoI) of several Andalusian entities

in different topics funded under the call for proposals FP7-KBBE-2012 and includes the

description of each entity and the expertise they offer within the specific topic. These

EoIs are listed according to the reference of each topic.

Tecnova is an Andalusian Technological Centre of Agricultural Industry. It is constituted as a private non profit Foundation and integrates 120 companies, organizations and institutions belonging to the industry and many other services for agriculture. Tecnova carries out R&D and implementation in Agrofood, Agricultural Industry and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) systems, which focus on using products based on respect environment. TECNOVA has as a goal the technological development, promotion and marketing of the industry and auxiliary services for agriculture, promoting the formation, competitiveness and innovation, being able to carry out as many primary and complementary activities as required. Their business is based on continual development and putting into effect new ideas, always geared to market demands. Dynamic market conditions demand a creative attitude and working method for the development of their products. Rijk Zwaan pays a lot of attention to research. This leads to new techniques, which enable our breeders to develop new varieties faster and more efficiently. This also encompasses further improvement of the seed quality of these varieties and developing resistance tests for plant diseases. Cell biology Using modern techniques at cell level, it is possible to accelerate the breeding process. One important application of cell biology is the creation of double haploids, which enables our breeders to develop pure parent lines for a new variety faster. Molecular biology They are getting an ever better insight into the molecular composition of plants. With marker technology, important genetic differences between plants are, as it were, made visible. This marker information is very valuable to the breeders. Biochemistry One of their research groups specialises in determining phytochemicals in plants, i.e. flavours, vitamins and minerals, but also health-enhancing ones.

The Andalusian Institute of Agrarian Research and Training, Fisheries, Food and Organic Production (IFAPA), is corner stone within the context of the Second Modernization for the definitive incorporation of Andalusia into the knowledge and innovation society. IFAPA aims to develop a global research and quality training aimed at creating and promoting an innovative enterprise culture, linked to current and future needs in agriculture, fisheries and food industry. IFAPA is involved in the process of transformation of the Andalusian society, to incorporate knowledge as a core value for economic and social development. Therefore it designs integrated and innovative policies, focused through the lens of innovation, enabling the joint work of the productive sectors, professional groups, businessmen, entrepreneurs, scientists and academics around this common goal. General activity developed by IFAPA Centro Alameda del Obispo:

a) Molecular marker-assisted breeding (MAS) to facilitate traditional breeding in legumes (faba bean, chickpea and peas) for disease resistance (especially broomrape, ascoquitosis and rust in faba bean and Asochyta rabiei, fusarium and rust in chickpea); nutrition quality (absence of anti-nutritional factors: tannins and vicina-convicine in faba bean and quality components in chickpea); studies on genetic variability in different species;



transcriptomic and functional analisis. Identification and analysis of genes differentially expressed in response to biotic stresses. b) Study of the genetic control of ornamental traitd and disease resistance in rose (Rosa sp.). Use of molecular markers in Rosa sp. to facilitate: - Molecular breeding- Fingerprinting and varietal identification - Studies of genetic variability and - Phylogeny.

The group has expertise in traditional and marker assisted breeding of different crops. They have pioneered faba bean breeding, genetic analysis and use of molecular markers for tagging genes of interest in the crop. The group has been a leader in the development of all faba bean genetic maps available so far that include genes/ QTLs controlling resistance to crop pathogens, yield components and nutritional aspects. Similar relevant contributions have been provided as well in chickpea and pea related with disease resistance, quality and other agronomic traits of interest. In faba bean all the segregating populations (RILs) required are available as well as all of the genetic maps published so far in the species. Genes/QTLs controlling resistance to broomrape (Orobanche crenata) ascochyta (Ascochyta fabae) and rust (Uromyces viciae-fabae) have been already identified and some of them validated in different environment and genetic backgrounds. In chickpea, the group has long experience in classical breeding programs, development of genetic map and use of molecular markers in breeding selection. We have developed new chickpea varieties and plant material valuable for research studies as Recombinant Inbred Lines (RILs) and Near Isogenic Lines (NILs). Several of the available population might segregate for resistance to abiotic stresses as well.Derived from this studies, the group has collaborated with international legume research groups in the European projects EUFABA, Grain.Legumes Integrated project (GLIP) and ASCORAB.


ACTIVITIES IN THIS or RELATED TOPICS: High-throughput genotyping, techniques, are playing a crucial role in plant research. To provide the basis for effective pre-breeding strategies and optimize the genetic makeup of any crop, (e.g. resistance to biotic/abiotic stresses, quality of end products, adaptation to climate change, etc), development of new varieties that meet the new and rapidly changing requirements in agricultural production is of outmost importance. Our group is ready to perform gene expression and comparative genomics studies to identify biotic stress related genes among legumes. The availability of a large amount of sequence information especially that derived from cDNA libraries in response to these stresses is allowing generating a list of putative candidate genes using the orthologs approach.2. Markers based on the stress responsible genes can be ultimately used to accelerate legume breeding program using Marker Assisted Selection (MAS) approaches. To perform that, we have readily available the following molecular tools and technologies: MOLECULAR TOOLS- A cDNA library produced from Ascochyta fabae-infected leaf material from faba bean (Vicia faba L.) has been developed within the framework of the project LEGRESIST from the 1st call ERA-NET Plant Genomics and the Trilateral Cooperation GABI-GENOPLANTE-MEC. This library will be an excellent tool for the identification of biotic stress



related genes and orthologs associated with the stress response. Orthologous sequences can also serve as tools to explore genes and their relationships across related species. - Several faba bean and chickpea recombinant inbred population (RILs) are available. These materials might segregate for resistance to abiotic stresses and can be used to identify candidate responsible genes using the same approaches.- Genetic maps highly saturated with ESTs from pea, Lupinus, Soya and Medicago truncatula useful for candidate gene discovery will be also available. TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE- Protocols and experience for DNA and RNA extraction of different herbaceous and woody species. - Protocols for PCR, agarose and acrylamide gel electrophoresis, fragment analysis.- Application of different types of markers (RAPDs, AFLPs, SSRs, CAPs, dCAPs, SNPs, ESTs, etc.. ) and development of efficient conditions for their amplification.- Cloning and sequencing of amplified products.- Gene expression studies by real-time PCR.

KBBE.2012.1.1-03: Precision technologies to improve irrigation management and increase water productivity in major water-demanding crops in Europe

Adesva, Agroindustry Technological Centre, is a private, non profit association, located in Lepe (Huelva- Andalusia- Spain). Its board is made up of 38 relevant organizations from the agribusiness industry and its associated services as well as public administrations. Since 2007, Adesva integrates the Andalusian system of innovation as the Huelva Agroindustry Technological Centre. Its main objective is to boost a collective process for the improvement of the competitive position of the agroindustry companies. This is done through Research, technological development and innovation (R&D+i) as well as through other activities as training, promotion, etc. Adesva counts with a qualified staff, 1500m2 facilities and a field test Station of 2 ha. Our R&D&I lines of work are: - Improving of cultivation techniques so as to enhance varieties performances (quality) - Minimising negative impacts to the environment (Biological control, biodegradable plastics, etc). - Automation of process (citrus harvesting, strawberry planting machine, ready - to- eat technology, juice production technology, etc) - Nutritional facts and health claims in fruits and vegetables - Biomass and Biorefinery - Viability study and demonstration pilot plant biogas




Adesva owns an experimental station with facilities (labs, greenhouses, fields, etc.) and people (researchers, technicians, etc.) with a large experience in field tests. Adesva has extensive experience in projects related to the improvement of irrigation water productivity. Among others: ·Water efficiency in strawberry production: Huelva region - Rigorously determine the amount of water required for profitable strawberry production. - Comparative analysis with different culture techniques (several tapes of irrigation.) ·Water reduction in strawberry production: -Determine the water consumption savings generated by implementing water retainers (polyacrylamides) - Rate the amounts of water used in conventional soil culture Adesva can also contribute to the dissemination activities, above all in SMEs, for example with workshops, training opportunities, etc, in its owns premises. Furthermore, Adesva associates a large number of SMEs and leads the agroindustry cluster in Huelva, so it can help to identify and include other stakeholders and / or partners for the proposal.

CITAGRO is a private entity whose purpose is the advice, technical consulting and services for the food industry especially in themes related with Research, Development and Innovation in a way that mainly allows the improvement of the competitiveness of the Andalusian food company. CITAGRO has experts in: management of R + D + i, studies and projects planning, improving business competitiveness through the implementation of innovation processes and redesign or create new products or services, Integrated Production certification, auditing and inspection of products, technological studies and projects, as well as strategic and technical assistance to improve business.


CITAGRO, as an Agrifood Technological Centre, has ten years of experience in the agrifood sector. This experience had provided us with a large knowledge of this sector and its actors (companies, cooperatives, associations, other centers, etc.), as well as a large experience in diagnostic and studies planning, projects development and management and technical support. Furthermore, all these knowledge gained from a multidisciplinary and cross sector perspective.



CITAGRO offers mainly expertise in the agricultural sector, including crops irrigation and water use. It also offers expertise in project management, products and process inspections. This Group is made up of 28 researchers (13 doctors and 15 Phd students) and is dedicated to the automatics and robotics applied to agriculture, renewable energies, and building automation. Its research lines are the following: • Modelling and control of dynamic systems. • Manipulation and mobile robotics. • Hybrid, robust, predictive, hierarchical, and multiobjetive process

control. • Automation of industrial systems. • Industrial instrumentation.

Group members have participated in 102 projects R&D divided into 9 international and 93 nationals; 28 contracts with companies related to their research priorities, which have led to a series of scientific and technical publications: one international book, 15 books national, 22 international book chapters, 7 national book chapters, 144 articles in international journals and 17 national interests and 390 conferences, 10 patents, and 24 Phd thesis.

To develop different lines of research have two greenhouses located in the Experimental Station of Cajamar Foundation, in El Ejido, in the province of Almeria in SE Spain. Now, we are working in the following three lines related with the irrigation management in agriculture: 1. Modelling of crop water loss All cultivation uses solar radiation, the concentration of CO2 from the air that surrounds them, water and nutrients to produce biomass (roots, stems and fruits) through the process of photosynthesis. When the stomata in the leaf are found open, water vapour is released by means of transpiration, which is a cost the cultivation must pay to produce dry matter. Moreover, water is lost through evaporation from the soil; the sum of this water loss is known as evapotranspiration and must be replaced through irrigation. It is worth indicating that demonstrated that in padded greenhouses with floors covered with plastic blankets the amount of evaporation is negligible and even more so when dealing with hydroponic cultivations. The work line has been developed with experimental data collected from tomato crops in a multispan type greenhouse provided of a micro-lysimeter to sample the measurements of the transpiration, obtaining the transpiration values. This system was substituted with transpiration models based in the Penman-Monteith (P-M). The equation combines the energy balance with the vapour convective transport. In the last years, different physical and pseudophysical models. On the other hand, the black-box dynamic models were used to model the water loss dynamics. 2. Design of controller considering the water save Water should be applied in precise amounts so as to cover to crop’s consumption, as excess water would mean an excessive washing out of fertilizers, which in turn could lead to contamination of the subterranean water, or the flooding of the substratum or radicular asphyxiation. If irrigation doesn’t provide enough water, it may provoke a hydric deficit, which brings with it a decrease in production. Hence irrigation control systems are fundamental tools in being able to supply water to the culture in the required amount and frequency. Moreover, as water is a limited resource in many agricultural areas, optimizing productivity through efficient and adequate irrigation so as to obtain maximum production should be a basic objective. To design a good controlled water supply through irrigation, the following questions must be answered: What should the frequency of the irrigations be? And how much water should be applied in the irrigation? To answer these questions it is necessary to know how much water should be applied to replace the evapotranspiration produced by the respiration of the plants and the evaporation of the water from the soil. The work line has not been limited to the development of models and control strategies, but it has required an important work of experimentation in greenhouses during several years, with the purpose of collecting data required for the calibration and validation of models, as well as to test different control algorithms. An event based irrigation controller for greenhouse cops was developed took into account the models calibrated and validated, physical and empirical models was used. On the other hand, an irrigation controller for trees was implemented in commercial control systems through a technology transference contract. Commercial system



with climate forecast, evapotranspiration models and a full meteorology station, all of this join to a remote monitoring and control system. 3. Weather forecast tools The main objective of greenhouses crop production is to increment the economic benefits of the farmer by means of finding a trade-off between the improvement of the product quality and the cost for obtaining adequate climatic conditions using new greenhouse structures and automatic control strategies. As a basic requirement, climate control helps to avoid conditions which can cause damage to the crop (e.g. high temperature or high humidity levels), and to achieve adequate temperature integrals that can accelerate the crop development and its quality while reducing pollution and energy consumption. Due to strong demands over production, diversity, quality and market requirements, the agro-food sector needs to use new technologies, where control engineering plays a decisive role. Modern agriculture is subject to quality and environmental impact regulations and it is a field where control techniques application has raised considerably. The diurnal temperature control is the main climate control problem in Mediterranean areas. It has been addressed in literature from different points of view, ranging from adaptive control, robust control, predictive control, and nonlinear control ideas. In most of these works, it can be observed the external disturbances strongly influence the air flow (and thus inside temperature and humidity), particularity the wind speed, the external air temperature, and solar radiation. Thus, it is convenient to include a mechanism to compensate for disturbances, and even to cancel non-linearities (the energy balance is of non-linear nature). Model Predictive Control (MPC) with feedback linearization techniques can be used in to compensate for disturbances and for the nonlinearities of the process. In this work line, a study of different forecasting techniques for solar plants and greenhouse control purposes was done. Those analyses considered: Discrete Kalman Filter, Discrete Kalman Filter with Dada Fusion, Exponentially Weighted Moving Average, and Double Exponential Smoothing. The mentioned techniques were applied to forecast the solar radiation time series for different prediction horizons. The obtained results were compared and verified, and the lowest prediction errors were reached using Double Exponential Smoothing technique. Feedforward compensators and Model Predictive Control (MPC) with feedback linearization techniques were used in to compensate for disturbances and for the nonlinearities of the process. The control algorithm uses disturbance forecasting techniques which allow compensating process disturbances and also uses full advantage of GPC predictive mechanism. Disturbance rejection capabilities can be improved by the estimation of the future disturbance values in the controlled variable prediction model.

For irrigation compatibility of soil and water is very important. If not the applied irrigation water may have adverse effect on the chemical and physical properties of soil. Determining the suitable land for irrigation



requires a thorough evaluation of soil properties and the topography of land within the field and the quality of water. To this end land evaluation decision support system capable of analyzing the soil characteristic under the scenario of climate change is beneficial.

The land evaluation decision support system for agricultural soil protection developed by this company is a set of useful tools for decision-making with application in a wide range of agro-ecological schemes. This system is an interactive software with comprehensive documentation for anyone planning, researching or teaching the sustainable use and management of rural resources under scenarios of climate change and with especial reference to the Mediterranean regions. This agro-ecological system provides a computer-based set of tools for an orderly arrangement and practical interpretation of land resources/agricultural management data. Its major characteristics are: Data and knowledge engineering through the use of a variety of databases and innovative modelling techniques; Scaling-up of process knowledge from the micro-scale to the landscape-scale (regional, national and continental); Land evaluation by using the following study-units: place (climate), soil (site+soil), land (climate+site+soil) and field (climate+site+soil+management); Use of monthly meteorological data and standard information as recorded in routine land resource surveys; Integrate agro-ecological approach, combining biophysical data with agricultural management experience; Incorporating the soil quality and sustainable agriculture concepts, towards an agro-environmental decision support system;

The information to the final user is: Land evaluation model for soil quality assessment: bioclimatic deficiency, general land capability, agricultural soil fertility, forestry land suitability, agricultural soil suitability and crop yield prediction. Land evaluation models for soil degradation assessment: water erosion risk, general soil contamination risk and specific soil contamination risk. Soil prediction models for engineering properties: soil compaction risk and soil plasticity and optimum moisture. Expert system/neural network approach with the following options: quantitative prediction of soil loss by water erosion, potential impact of soil loss on crop productivity, and response of agricultural management to reduce soil erosion.

Furthermore, the SDBm Plus: FAO-CSIC Multilingual Soil Profile Database is being developed by the National research council / Natural resource and Agrobiology institute of Seville (IRNAS), which is now being coordinated by MicroLEIS research group. Its development is funded mainly by the Spanish Ministry of Environment through the programme SEIS.net: Sistema Español de Información de Suelos sobre Internet.

SDBm Plus is user-friendly software designed to store and retrieve in an efficient and systematic way the large amounts of geo-referenced soil attribute data collected in soil surveys and laboratories. This database can be used in soil monitoring and evaluation regardless of scale (regional, national or local), and especially to implement tools on choosing optimal



land use and management decisions in sustainable forestry development.

Regarding our Soil Data Bank, SEISnet, it is integrated by a wide range of useful information (alpha-numeric, spatial and photographic) for public and private-sector agencies involved in land use planning and environmental management. The data bank comprises: A first approach to Spanish soils, digital atlas of soil regions (S 1:1.000.000) containing cartography of: types of soil, slope, geology, topography and land use. These soils are representative of the main pedological traits in the various nature areas of Andalusia and were selected from the global soil data base of SEISnet.

Additionally, we are now integrating data from 1600 soil profiles of West Andalusia from recent soil cartography S 1:25.000.

INNOVATIVE ASPECT: Regarding the topic, the company can highly perform tasks related to soil science, water-soil availability and to provide sustainable irrigation management. The soil moisture can be measured in order to give more accurate soil moisture which is an integral part of any irrigation scheduling. In addition we can provide a decision support system for reducing the contamination of water through strategically agricultural management considering soil properties. Because of that large knowledge we are expertise on analysis results by working with biological develop as vegetative plant answers, productivity differences and agronomic results. We have large experience in scheduling by using sensors for water needs as soil sensors for soil-water availability, weather sensors for interpretation local climate data (temperatures, radiation, air humidity) and its scheduling applications. All this data collected are processed by computer software carrying out the optimization of the irrigation water use at the farm level according to diary and local climate conditions.

We are a technological centre with a high research activity and in system related to agriculture, especially to horticulture. We offer quality certification of product related to agriculture as drip irrigation systems, soil improver of water efficiency… So we are an technological centre which



gives independent quality certification to companies of their products. The Institute for Sustainable Agriculture (IAS) was established in 1992 as a unique research center within the CSIC mission in agricultural research. Its specific focus is the study of agricultural systems in Andalusia, such as dryland and irrigated herbaceous crops and olive orchards, in order to harmonize food production with conservation of natural resources and environmental protection. Now, almost 20 years later, the thrust of the IAS, outlined in Action Plan 2010-13, focuses on such objectives as undertaking strategic analyses of resources to improve the sustainability of agriculture; investigating and comparing options for exploiting these resources sustainable and economically; and optimizing resource use while minimizing environmental degradation. Spearheading these objectives are 36 researchers in the Departments of Agronomy, Plant Breeding, and Crop Protection. The IAS Agronomy Department is committed to developing a more sustainable agriculture through the rational use and conservation of water and soil resources, and by the application of new technologies (models, remote sensing, control/automation, instrumentation), for crop and resource management and the assessment of global change. Plant Breeding Department’s research line focuses on the breeding aspects of various crops, mainly cereals, legumes, and oilseeds. A major departmental goal is the



development of novel traits that contributes to improving crop productivity and increasing the added value of the products. The Crop Protection Department consists of three research groups Phytopathology of Sustainable Agricultural Systems, Weed Science and Precision Agriculture, and Plant Disease Control. The general departmental objective is to increase the crop production efficiency of sustainable agricultural systems in the Mediterranean area through the integrated management of soilborne pathogens (fungi, bacteria, nematodes and parasitic plants) and weeds. Research is aimed at avoiding the economic losses these pests cause.


The research group (Department Crop Protection) has been leader in two national projects on agroecosystem biodiversity: Influence of the cereal agricultural landscape on weed assemblages and spatial dynamics of weed populations and its management and Ecological basis of the agricultural landscape for the management of weeds: Biodiversity, seed dispersal and spatial modelling. In both project they have increases knowledge on the agronomic and ecological importance of seminatural and agricultural habitats as well as on management practices suited to increase functional biodiversity to improve farm productivity and weed control. They have published some paper on the topic, such as : (2011) Tillage system did not affect weed diversity in a 23-year experiment in Mediterranean dryland. Since 1990, the group has actively participated in international and national research projects mainly focus on pest of agricultural and forestry systems, in terms to apply knowledge acquired about pest bioecology for subsequent use in the development of control methods. Two main research lines within this fields have been developed by the group since its foundation: Pests of genus Quercus. Design of sampling system and developing of IPM programs in mediterranean forestry systems, mainly semi-natural ecosystems as dehesas. Since 2000, the group collaborates actively with ”Consejería de Medio Ambiente. Junta de Andalucía” developing IPM programs in mediterranean forestry systems. Due to this fact, the group has been actively involved with ”Grupo de Trabajo Forestal, Parques y Jardines” (workgroup focused on forestry environmental protection and ornamental plants crop protection nationwide). In recent years, the group have been participated in several projects related to this area:

1. Design of an IMP program for carpophagus and borer insects of cork oak in Andalusia (RF1930/07/M/00) (2007-2009).

2. Design and implementation of an integrated program for Tortrix viridana in holm oak forests of Andalusia (1929/07/M/00) (2007-2009).



3. Development of IPM for pest: Tortrix viridana, Coroebus undatus, Platypus cylindrus, Curculio elephas and Cydia fagiglandana (2005-2007).

4. Field monitoring and control of major carpophagus insects in genus Quercus (2001-2003).

5. Field monitoring and control of major carpophagus insects in oak in the province of Seville (2000-2001).

Wild grapevine as a genetic resource. Research work in context of IPM programs for vineyards and management of wild grapevine, a threatened species, as genetic resource in order to increase resistance of crop varieties to pests and diseases. This work is supported by several scientific papers and books. Recently one of these publications, the book ”Vid silvestre en Andalucía. Caracterización y conservación del recurso fitogenético”, has been awarded as the best international publication in viticulture field by OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine). Since 2001, three projects have been carried out in this field:

1. Exploration, resource location and phylogenetic characterization of wild grape (Vitis vinifera L. sylvestris (Gmelin) Hegi) in Principado de Asturias (RF2008-00019-C02-02) (2008-2011).

2. Recovery and characterization of wild vines in Spain (RF2006-00010-00-00) (2006-2008).

3. Technical assistance contract for the study and conservation of wild vines in Andalusia (subproject 2000111299/3) (2001-2004).


Activity and toxicology testing of chemical synthesis compounds and natural antifeedant substances in order to improve existing control methods, also aimed in assessing effects on non-target species. Activity testing of comercial products for biological control, mainly based on fungus or nematodes. This research line is focused on identification of new target species and development of new application methods. Search and massive breeding of parasitoids and natural enemies. Development of sampling methods for specific oophagus parasitoids and tests for evaluation of specificity. Spatio-temporal distribution studies of agricultural and forest pests. Application of geostatistical analisys techniques for mapping pest population densities. Identification of main influential factors on distribution. Projects related to these technologies have been cited previously in the research lines, pests of genus Quercus.

Adesva, Agroindustry Technological Centre, is a private, non profit association, located in Lepe (Huelva- Andalusia- Spain). Its board is made up of 38 relevant organizations from the agribusiness industry and its associated services as well as public administrations. Since 2007, Adesva integrates the Andalusian system of innovation as the Huelva Agroindustry Technological Centre. Its main objective is to boost a collective process for the improvement of the competitive position of the agroindustry companies. This is done through Research, technological development and innovation (R&D+i) as well as through other activities as training, promotion, etc. Adesva counts with a qualified staff, 1500m2 facilities and a field test Station of 2 ha. Adesva owns an experimental station with facilities (labs, greenhouses, fields, etc.) and people (researchers, technicians, etc.) with a large experience in field tests.

Adesva has extensive experience in field trials to test the efficacy of the new products in real production conditions and in different geographical situations (see details on www.citadesva.com). The economic viability of the alternative plant nutrition strategies can be assessed by Adesva, including comparative cost benefit analysis between the new and the conventional approaches.

Konectia is a technology-driven spin-off supported by research groups from the University of Cadiz, which aims to highlight the achievements and scientific know-how from them. Backed by extensive experience in the field of management in R & D of its group of promoters, develops the market power of university patents origin highly profitable and which are not exploited. Consisting in a multidisciplinary group of PhD chemicals engineers and PhD in Chemistry, which is working in a new generation of agro-chemicals (especially herbicides), with new modes of action based on alellochemical agents and their synthetic analogues are an interesting alternative to traditional chemical products, as they present new modes of action. From this point of view, the allelochemical agents and its analogues with phytotoxic activity meet the necessary qualities to adapt to new requirements on environment, related to the development of models for sustainable agriculture. It is for this reason that obtaining new agrochemical substances intended for the rational control of pests in agriculture is of great interest. In this sense, Konectia manages the development and deployment in the market for home-university patents that are based on development of new products with phytotoxic activity. The activities of the group at University are mainly funded by regional and national programs of research, but also have developed



different projects funded by EC, Framework Programme included.


Our group has developed many projects that could be of interest to satisfy the necessities of this topic. To get an overview of Konectia in this area, we detail some of them:

Collection, identification and determination of compounds with biological activity (plants: aloe vera, peppers and grapes).

Design of new models of natural herbicides: synthesis and evaluation of hydroxamic acid and their derivatives.

Procurement of bioactive sesquiterpenes through traditional techniques and biotechnological techniques.

Allelopathy as a new strategy for sustainable ecosystems development.

Fate and toxicity of allelochemicals (natural plant toxins) in relation to environment and consumer.

Use of allelochemicals agents for the control of resistant biotypes of Lolium spp.

Depending on the needs of the project consortium and due to our scientific know-how, we may carry out duties or make a contribution on activities such as:

Identification of new bioactive compounds. We may introduce our know-how in this field. Our group has isolated, identified, characterized, or synthesized, more than 500 potential allelochemicals and its derivatives.

Preparing commercial applications of new molecules.

Discovery and selection of target molecules. Through screening and extraction techniques (UAS, PFE, MAE).

Selection of plants and microorganism. Using different criteria.

Labelling of compounds.

Coordinate field demonstration trials.

Dissemination of results. We could carry out disseminations activities in Spain or in other European and Mediterranean countries.

Due to our know-how and experience we can contribute in several areas of this topic, and with a very interesting point of view. We are currently working on reduce the dependence on mineral agrochemicals, developing more environmentally friendly products to use in the future and replace the current products. The strategic geographical position of Spain could be of interest for the consortium, furthermore it is a very important country in agricultural sector, and good place to make trials for its weather conditions.

The company has been mainly focused on three research lines: a) Determination of organic residues and contaminants in environmental and food samples, b) Determination of organic contaminants and residues in biological matrices and c) Determination of bioactive compounds in foods. In relation to the first research line, it must be indicated that several families of residues and organic contaminants, including pesticides, pharmaceutical compounds, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phenolic compounds have been determined in several food matrices, mainly fruits and vegetables, but also in environmental samples, sucha as soil, air, water and wastewater effluents. For that purpose, we are using advanced analytical techniques such as ultra high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) and gac chromatography (GC) coupled to low resolution mass spectrometry detectors such as triple quadrupole. The company is improving and researching on new analytical methodologies related to the characterization of environmental and food samples. Thus, it must be highlighted a collaboration with a research group from Almeria



University in a project entitled “ Study of the contamination/degradation of residues and organic contaminants in soils from intensive agriculture”. It is important to notice that the company has instrumentation to carry out microbiological, physicochemical and other types of analysis (environmental, food safety and quality). For instance, there are two UHPLC instruments coupled to triple quadrupole analyzers; a gas chromatography (GC) coupled to a triple quadrupole and three GC coupled to ion traps among others. Furthermore it is important to notice that one of the main purposes of the company is the collaboration with research groups. The research developed by the Group “Analytical Chemistry of Contaminants“ of the University of Almeria in the field of analysis of residues and organic contaminants has been carried out since the last 20 years. This research has been mainly focused on the determination of pesticides in different food, environmental and biological commodities. During the last decade, the scope of the research has been extended to other compounds in food but also in the environmental field, including i.e. pharmaceutical residues and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in food from animal origin (honey, egg, milk, meat, liver), feed, water, wastewater effluents (WWs) and soil; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in air, water, WWs and soil; phenolic compounds and phtalates in water, WWs and soil; volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in water and WWs; mycotoxins in beverages, vegetables and food from animal origin; phycotoxins in bivalves; organotin compounds and metabolites in fish. Since 1996, the research team work mainly with chromatographic techniques (gas chromatography (GC) and liquid chromatography (LC)) coupled to different low-resolution mass spectrometry (LRMS) analyzers (single quadrupole, triple quadrupole or ion trap). Since the beginning of 2010, high-resolution MS (HRMS) analyzers are also available coupled to ultra-high performance LC (UHPLC) (Orbitrap and quadrupole-time-of-flight,



QTOF) and GC (double focusing magnetic sector (DFS) and QTOF) and research has begun on them. In the last years, the studies in the Group have been focused to the diminising of the analysis time, the increasing in the number of analytes in multi-compund/multi-class methods, the simplification of the pre-treatment stage and miniaturization of the measurement process in order to increase the capabilities of the laboratories, and to improve characteristic parameters of the methods, such as selectivity and sensitivity, considering all these approachs for their application in real problems.


The Research Group can offer a number of analytical services in relation to the characterization of crops and soil, i.e. determination of pesticide residues or physicochemical analysis. Thus, the team can contribute by the evaluation of the environmental impact of the proposed alternative plant nutrition strategies in non-leguminous crops. In this sense, the Group is currently leading a R&D project related to the topic ("Study of the contamination/degradation of residues and organic contaminants in soils from intensive agriculture "). The project is focused on the develompent and analysis of agricultural soils from intensive production in plastic-based greenhouses. These lands are currently working under integrated pest management practices (IPMs). A physicochemical characterization and a detailed monitoring of residues and organic contaminants is on going (i.e. pesticides, PCBs, PAHs, phenolic compounds, phtalates, etc., using the most appropriate methodology for each of them). They consider this knowledge is very valuable according to the topic, for instance, in order to carry out soil characterizations. Moreover, the The current analytical instrumentation available in the Group must be also considered; in this sense, recent and advanced instruments, such as Orbitrap, are rarely found in the analytical laboratories. Therefore, the specific instrumentation that can be offered by the Group is a very special characteristic in comparison to other candidates. Furthermore, regarding the field demonstration trials, the geographical situation of the University of Almería can result interesting to evaluate the efficacy of the new products in real production since it is an agricultural area devoted to intensive agricultural production.

The Agricultural and Fishery Research and Training Institute (IFAPA) is an autonomous organisation, with its own legal status and assets. It is attached to the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (Andalusian Regional Administration). IFAPA is formed by 19 centres of research, training and technology transfer located all through Andalusia. We are a multidisciplinary human team with a wide range of instrumental and technology knowledge. We work on several agriculture products such as olive oil, wine, milk product, fruit and vegetables. Our work is focus on company requirements stressing the importance of the transference of knowledge between public bodies (as IFAPA) and private companies and cooperatives.


Our research group is working on the achievement of added-value wines. For this goal we are researching both agronomic management (new varieties, pruning, punning system, vegetal cover, grape thinning, irrigation, etc) and oenological practices (cold soak, maceration, electric fields application, alternatives to sulphur, stilbene-enriched wines, etc.), which



could be included in improvement of quality grape and wine objective. Moreover, in order to secure technology transfer we offer our experience in a technology transfer project, in which several curses and meetings are organised monthly in order to transfer all the experimentation and research that we developed. A website platform (http://servifapa.ifapa.junta-andalucia.es:8080/agriculturaypesca/ifapa/servifapa/do/portadaCiudadano) is constantly actualized to recover all these information. At the same time questions and doubts are answered through this platform. To develop above objectives we have three experimental wine cellars, an experimental vineyard (22 Ha) and several labs with many different types of equipment, including chromatographic systems (GC-MS, GC-O, HS-SPME-GC-MS, HPLC-MS). Expected impact: as we are located in a warm climate zone, the effect of climate change can be checked. We have a big experimental vineyard, with many possibilities to perform assays. We also have wide experience in the study of: varieties, vineyard management, and oenological technologies, in relationship with quality wine and therefore added-value wine.

The Institute for Sustainable Agriculture (IAS) was established in 1992 as a unique research center within the CSIC mission in agricultural research. Its specific focus is the study of agricultural systems in Andalusia, such as dryland and irrigated herbaceous crops and olive orchards, in order to harmonize food production with conservation of natural resources and environmental protection. Now, almost 20 years later, the thrust of the IAS, outlined in Action Plan 2010-13, focuses on such objectives as undertaking strategic analyses of resources to improve the sustainability of agriculture; investigating and comparing options for exploiting these resources sustainable and economically; and optimizing resource use while minimizing environmental degradation. Spearheading these objectives are 36 researchers in the Departments of Agronomy, Plant Breeding, and Crop Protection. The IAS Agronomy Department is committed to developing a more sustainable agriculture through the rational use and conservation of water and soil resources, and by the application of new technologies (models, remote sensing, control/automation, instrumentation), for crop and resource management and the assessment of global change. Plant Breeding Department’s research line focuses on the breeding aspects of various crops, mainly cereals, legumes, and oilseeds. A major departmental goal is the



development of novel traits that contributes to improving crop productivity and increasing the added value of the products. The Crop Protection Department consists of three research groups Phytopathology of Sustainable Agricultural Systems, Weed Science and Precision Agriculture, and Plant Disease Control. The general departmental objective is to increase the crop production efficiency of sustainable agricultural systems in the Mediterranean area through the integrated management of soilborne pathogens (fungi, bacteria, nematodes and parasitic plants) and weeds. Research is aimed at avoiding the economic losses these pests cause.

developed by this company is a set of useful tools for decision-making with application in a wide range of agro-ecological schemes. This system is an interactive software with comprehensive documentation for anyone planning, researching or teaching the sustainable use and management of rural resources, with especial reference to the Mediterranean regions. This agro-ecological system provides a computer-based set of tools for an orderly arrangement and practical interpretation of land resources/agricultural management data. Its major characteristics are: Data and knowledge engineering through the use of a variety of databases and innovative modelling techniques; Scaling-up of process knowledge from the micro-scale to the landscape-scale (regional, national and continental); Land evaluation by using the following study-units: place (climate), soil (site+soil), land (climate+site+soil) and field (climate+site+soil+management); Use of monthly meteorological data and standard information as recorded in routine land resource surveys; Integrate agro-ecological approach, combining biophysical data with agricultural management experience; Incorporating the soil quality and sustainable agriculture concepts, towards an agro-environmental decision support system; At present we are developing a new e-system, CARBOSOIL for evaluation of soil carbon sequestration. This new component explores and quantifies the role of soil, land use and land use change as a determinant of the soil’s ability to sequester and store carbon along several benchmark places. It consist of integration of mitigation factors in the agro-ecological support system MicroLEIS DSS. In addition this project for containing the most completed soil data together with land coverage data related to climate change can be referred to as a source of soil data in Andalusia. This new development of our technology aims to improve land use and agro-forestry management in order to contribute effectively and on a large-scale to remove greenhouse gases (GHG) from the atmosphere in a long-term perspective (over 100 years), thus promoting global sustainability. If stocks of carbon are increased by afforestation or reforestation, or carbon stocks in croplands or forest stands are increased through changes in management practices, then additional carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere creating a carbon sink. MicroLEIS DSS, as a land use decision support tool, has the capability of estimating the Carbon Sequestration potential and including the Carbon value in the economic analysis which is urgently needed for improving Carbon Sequestration by terrestrial ecosystems through proper land-use and forestry management planning practices. Furthermore, the SDBm Plus: FAO-CSIC Multilingual Soil Profile Database is being developed by the National research council / Natural resource and Agrobiology institute of Seville (IRNAS), which is now being coordinated by MicroLEIS research group. Its development is funded mainly by the Spanish Ministry of Environment through the programme SEIS.net: Sistema Español de Información de Suelos sobre Internet. SDBm Plus is user-friendly software designed to store and retrieve in an



efficient and systematic way the large amounts of geo-referenced soil attribute data collected in soil surveys and laboratories. This database can be used in soil monitoring and evaluation regardless of scale (regional, national or local), and especially to implement tools on choosing optimal land use and management decisions in sustainable forestry development.

Biomaslinic S.L. is a biotechnological company based on the production and distribution of two natural extracts: Maslinic acid and Hydroxytyrosol. Biomaslinic S.L. also promotes and coordinates Research, Development and innovation activities which are related with natural products from the olive tree and their application in foodstuffs, cosmetics and pharmacy.


We offer the supply of Maslinic acid and Hydroxytyrosol natural extracts. Both products can be used as food ingredients for human and animal foods, after the execution of studies of toxicology and efficacy it has been demonstrated, and they have no environmental impact because they are natural extracts from a plant. Maslinic acid has shown activity against parasites from the Phylum Apicomplexa (Toxoplasma, Eimeria, Isospora), and right now we are testing it against Anisakis, a widespread parasite in fish, responsible of the human Anisakiosis. In addition to this, increases the protein-turnover and the growth rate in a 30%, when it is used for aquaculture’s animals. Hydroxytyrosol is the most powerful natural antioxidant, and can also be used due to its bactericidal, fungicidal and antiviral properties.

The Andalusian Aquaculture Technological Center Foundation, CTAQUA, is a newly established non-profit, private foundation which aims at developing applied research, technology, innovation, sustainability and training within the aquaculture sector and, in this way, improving the competitiveness of Andalusian aquaculture companies. CTAQUA counts with an Experimental Center to conduct fish trials under strictly defined and controlled environmental conditions both in fresh and seawater species. Prevention and mitigation of fish diseases is one of the most important concerns of fish producers, including companies of our patronage, so CTAQUA is working hard on this line. CTAQUA has carried out several projects related to disease of cultured fish species:

“Evaluation of the efficacy of commercial vaccines for fish: case study, Gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) against Photobacterium damselae subsp. Piscicida”,

“Best practices for fish culture in earthen ponds to eradicate or minimize the impact of gill parasites”,

(http://www.agforise.eu/) As one example of the projects which the Food Cluster Initiative federates, the Agforise project is a concrete initiative towards cluster to cluster cooperation. Agforise aims at building a strong cooperation strategy between the Agrofood clusters of the regions of Mersin (Turkey), Emilia Romagna (Italy) and Murcia (Spain), through the establishment of a common sustainable dialogue platform. 13 entities are actively involved in the project, each one – company, research entity, public administration or intermediary body – bringing added value from a different perspective but with complementary properties regarding their expertise or function. The main focus of partners is to create a common R&D&i strategy that should allow maximizing capacity for research and lead to actual market-oriented projects, stimulating utilization of national and European R&D funds. After a preliminary step of strategic analysis of each regional cluster, the partners will work on the elaboration of a Joint Action Plan. Another important feature of the project will consist of the organization of a Call for expression of interest and a Brokerage Event for transnational innovative projects. CICAP provides services to many near-by companies that widely sell their products both into national and international markets. In this sense, we have performed several studies and protocols in order to guarantee the animal health and food safety of the products from these companies, as specific control programs for salmonellosis in pigs have been carried out by our centre. We are located in the South of Spain (Andalusia), where most of the livestock, both pigs and ruminants, are reared in extensive systems. Our location point us as one of the main entry rout of emerging disease which are common in Africa but exotic in Europe. Furthermore, the extensive systems favor the contact of domestic animals (pigs and ruminants) both with wild animals and also with insects, just as mosquitoes (which act as vector of several exotic diseases). CICAP provides services to many near-by companies that widely sell their products under a Protected Designation of Origin “Los Pedroches PDO” recognized by European Union (September- 2010). The know-how under this PDO is completely linked to the Dehesa ecosystem, that contributes to one of the less contaminative ways of producing Iberian pig, the montanera. Dehesa Ecosystem has 424.000 Hectares extension and hundreds of SMEs; This natural Mediterranean setting has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The montanera type of production is unique in Europe as it´s proved to be a sustainable and friendly system of production, in which breed is perfectly adapted to the environmental conditions of the south west of the Iberian peninsula, characterized of cold winters and hot summers. The low protein feed that the pig receives on the fattening phase is based on acorn and grass, resulting a decrease on greenhouse gases emissions. Montanera wouldn’t be possible without Dehesa Ecosystem that also complies with animal-welfare demands and minimizes environmental degradation. Actually the research group is developing a research project of the Blanca Andaluza breed an endangered Spanish goat breed to develop a germoplasm (embryo and sperm) bank and to study the seasonality (male and female) of this breed to optimise and increase the reproductive performances of the livestock's of this breed. They have developed different projects to study the endocrinology of the seasonality in goats. They have studied different procedures and techniques to reduce the seasonality of reproduction using photoperiod, male effect, melatonin and nutrition to optimise and increase the reproductive performances in Mediterranean goat breeds. Relevant studies and projects developed by the group: - Study of goat products quality (including CLA). - Genetic analysis of goat milk content and fat composition. - Analysis of carcass and meat quality of local goat breeds (traditional and organic system). - Quality control of feedstuffs and animal products by NIR spectroscopy. - Technical-economic management of farming systems (indicators). - Generation of software for ruminant management. - Proposal of livestock sustainability indicators. - Evaluation of ruminant production system for their conversion to organic model.




The research group has a large experience about the reproduction function in small ruminants and they have studied different strategies to increase fertility as principal reproductive performance at farm animal breeding. They have an experimental farm with photoperiodic control to allocate until more than 100 animals. The group is able to determine different reproductive hormones as LH, progesterone, melatonin, testosterone by ELISA. They have the necessary equipments to analyze sperm characteristics and freeze the buck sperm. The research group have experience and the necessary equipments for embryo recovery, embryo culture and vitrification or embryo freezing.

Adesva, Agroindustry Tecnological Center, is a private, nonprofit association, located in Lepe (Huelva- Andalusia- Spain). Its board is made up of 38 relevant organizations from the agribusiness industry and its associated services as well as public administrations. Since 2007, Adesva integrates the Andalusian system of innovation as the Huelva Agroindustry Technological Centre. Its main objective is to boost a collective process for the improvemnt of the competive position of the agroindustry companies. This is done through Research, technological development and innovation (R&D+i) as well as through other activities as training, promotion, etc. Adesva counts with a qualified staff, 1500m2 facilities and a field test Station of 2 ha. And a ready to eat plant. The working staff of the Technology Center - GARUM - has worked on issues related to labeling of seafood. Are generally knowed healthy properties on many seafood products (Ω-3, for example), and its healthy rol on Mediterranean diet; but it isn’t all: Many canned sea products in Andalusia are made with olive oil and other vegetable oils with healthy properties in their ingredients. Using their transversal position in the seafood sector in a fishery region like Andalusia, with direct contacts with all the actors involved, Garum can coordinate and establish the necessary synergies and job contacts with their associated companies in order to develop a study that provides the knowledge on how health-related symbols and claims in products as healthy as sea foods influence the consumer towards healthy choices.

Adesva, Agroindustry Tecnological Center, is a private, nonprofit association, located in Lepe (Huelva- Andalusia- Spain). Its board is made up of 38 relevant organizations from the agribusiness industry and its associated services as well as public administrations. Since 2007, Adesva integrates the Andalusian system of innovation as the Huelva Agroindustry Technological Centre. Its main objective is to boost a collective process for the improvemnt of the competive position of the agroindustry companies. This is done through Research, technological development and innovation (R&D+i) as well as through other activities as training, promotion, etc. Adesva counts with a qualified staff, 1500m2 facilities and a field test Station of 2 ha. Adesva has conducted a study to evaluate the influence of strawberry consumption on biomarkers of health. Adesva can also contribute to the dissemination activities, above all in SMEs, for example with workshops, training opportunities, etc, in its owns premises. Furthermore, Adesva associates a large number of SMEs and leads the agroindustry cluster in Huelva, so it can help to identify and include other stakeholders and / or partners for the proposal.

We are a research group belonging to a Public University. Our research is focused to the study of molecular mechanisms involved in the physiologic effect of several dietary interventions, such as dietary supplementation with antioxidants (coenzyme Q10), the effect of dietary fat (olive oil, sunflower oil, etc) and calorie restriction. We have strong expertise and experience of the study of the role and




mechanisms of dietary bioactive compounds (antioxidants and fat source), as well as in the characterization of relevant biomarkers by proteomic approaches. We have developed studies both in animal models and in humans which demonstrate the effects of dietary coenzyme Q10 on the plasma proteome in the rat. More recently, we have demonstrated similar beneficial effects of dietary coenzyme Q10 in humans, and discovered new biomarkers of the beneficial effects of olive oil consumption during aging in the rat. By using quantitative real time-RT-PCR we have shown by the first time that the biosynthesis of coenzyme Q is a target of calorie restriction in the mouse. Konectia is a technology-driven spin-off supported by research groups from the University of Cadiz, which aims to highlight the achievements and scientific know-how from them. Backed by extensive experience in the field of management in R & D of its group of promoters, develops the market power of university patents origin highly profitable and which are not exploited. Consisting in a multidisciplinary group of PhD chemicals engineers and PhD in Chemistry, which is working developing extraction methods and analysis of capsaicinoids , the study of the stability of these compounds as well as the development of synthesis methods of natural compounds and its analogues. Capsaicinoids are compounds of great biological interest, presenting antioxidant, antimutagenic, antitumor and anti-inflammatory properties. They also are powerful topical analgesics for peripheral pain and stimulate the metabolism. These compounds are widely used in food, either by direct consumption by using hot peppers in food or with other foods that have been prepared from hot pepper. In this sense, Konectia manages the development and deployment in the market for home-university patents that are based on development of biobased products. The activities of the group at University are mainly funded by regional and national programs of research, but also have developed different projects funded by EC, Framework Programme included.

The company has been mainly focused on three research lines: a) Determination of organic residues and contaminants in environmental and food samples, b) Determination of organic contaminants and residues in biological matrices and c) Determination of bioactive compounds in foods. In relation to the first research line, it must be indicated that several families of residues and organic contaminants, including pesticides, pharmaceutical compounds, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phenolic compounds have been determined in several food matrices, mainly fruits and vegetables, but also in environmental samples, sucha as soil, air, water and wastewater effluents. For that purpose, we are using advanced analytical techniques such as ultra high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) and gac chromatography (GC) coupled to low resolution mass spectrometry detectors such as triple quadrupole. The company is improving and researching on new analytical methodologies related to the characterization of environmental and food samples. Thus, it must be highlighted a collaboration with a research group from Almeria University in a project entitled “ Study of the contamination/degradation of



residues and organic contaminants in soils from intensive agriculture”. It is important to notice that the company has instrumentation to carry out microbiological, physicochemical and other types of analysis (environmental, food safety and quality). For instance, there are two UHPLC instruments coupled to triple quadrupole analyzers; a gas chromatography (GC) coupled to a triple quadrupole and three GC coupled to ion traps among others. Furthermore it is important to notice that one of the main purposes of the company is the collaboration with research groups. Therefore we have signed several research projects with research groups belonging to the University of Almeria and the University of Granada, as well as with private companies.


In relation to the expertise related to the topic, it must be highlighted that currently we are working on several projects and the main activities we are carrying out are: - Development of analytical methods for the simultaneous determination of bioactive compounds in fruits and vegetables. We are developing single extraction procedures for the simultaneous extraction of bioactive compounds. Therefore, we are evaluating several experimental conditions for the common determination of these compounds in one single chromatographic run, using liquid chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole - Determination of transformation products. In this research line, we are observing the main transformation routes of the bioactive compounds and the main transformation products that are generated. - Analysis of pholates related compounds in several matrices. - Analysis of carotenoids and related compounds in genetically modified organisms. In this project we are evaluating the variation of carotenoids content in several types of vegetables, which have been genetically modified. - Analysis of bioactive compounds in olive oil. For the development of these activities advanced analytical techniques (liquid and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry detection) have been applied.

For that purpose, we are using advanced analytical techniques such as ultra high performance liquid chromatograpy (UHPLC) coupled to low resolution mass spectrometry detectors such as triple quadrupole and high resolution mass spectrometry detectors such as Exactive-Orbitrap. The research group has got the following projects from the Spanish and Andalusian Science and Innovation Ministry related to this topic: - Identification and analysis of phytochemicals in fruits and vegetables. Preparation of a database for the identification of phytochemicals. - Advances in quality food: Determination of phytochemicals in fresh and processed fruits and vegetables. In relation to the instrumentation, it is important to notice that the research group has an ultra high performance liquid chromatography coupled to a



triple quadrupole analyzer and Exactive-Orbitrap and a gas chromatography coupled to a triple quadrupole and ion trap. Furthermore it is important to indicate that one of the main purposes of the research group is the transfer of the knowledge to control laboratories. For that, there are several research projects with private laboratories related to this topic. This expertise can be very helpful for the determination of several bioactive compounds in different dietary sources.


In relation to the expertise related to the topic, it must be highlighted that currently they are working on the two projects indicated above and the main activities they are carrying out are: - Development of analytical methods for the simultaneous determination of bioactive compounds in fruits and vegetables. They are developing single extraction procedures for the simultaneous extraction of bioactive compounds. Therefore, they are evaluating several experimental conditions for the common determination of these compounds in one single chromatographic run, using liquid chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole or Exactive-Orbitrap analyzer. - Development of a database for the identification of phytochemicals in fruits and vegetables. This topic allows a fast and reliable procedure for the identification of several families of phytochemicals based on the retention time and exact mass. - Evaluation of Exactive-Orbitrap for quantification purposes. They are comparing the capabilities of high resolution mass spectrometry analyzers for routine analysis (identification and quantification). In this sense, one injection is enough for the identification of unknown or non-targeted bioactive compounds and quantification of targeted compounds. - Determination of transformation products. In this research line, they are observing the main transformation routes of the bioactive compounds and the main transformation products that are generated.

We have previous experience in designing low cost transformation processes for the extraction of ingredients from by products from vegetable sources, and their application in several food matrices. CTAQUA counts with an Experimental Center to conduct fish trials under strictly defined and controlled environmental conditions both in fresh and seawater. The patronage of the Foundation provides an industrial field to complete the pilot trials developed in the Experimental Center and evaluate the impact of research in real production conditions.


CTAQUA focuses on the innovation of the aquaculture sector including commercialization and marketing of aquaculture products. Our patronage members are very interested in tailor-made commercialization strategies and marketing strategies which could bench mark their product and increase their competitiveness CTAQUA Experimental Center has developed an innovative project concerning the marketing of aquaculture products: “Alternatives for processing, packaging and presentation of the aquaculture products. Market study and valuation”. This project involved producers, retailers and supermarkets. A new treatment of the sea bream, as smoked fillets, was sold in big supermarkets with great public acceptance. A new packaging format was also designed and tested; consumer response has been analyzed by specialized marketing department at the University of Cantabria and it was considered very positive. Consumers will afford to pay more if quality is guaranteed.. The results and conclusions of the project can be consulted at www.ctaqua.es (“Valorización de los productos de acuicultura”). Research on alternative protein resources for aquaculture feeds is one of the priorities of aquaculture sector. CTAQUA Experimental Center has been involved as RTD partner in different projects at national and international level dealing with applied nutrition in aquaculture. The Experimental Center counts with several recirculation systems to evaluate experimental and commercial feeds. CTAQUA has carried out several projects related to feeds of cultured fish species:

“Utilization of soy products (concentrates of soy products) and micronized soy in diets for juvenile sea bream”.

Innofood has been the R&D team of more than 90 food industries in Spain,




mainly SME. We are more than 50 researchers including 20 PhD in Pharmacy, Agro-engineering, Food Technology, Biology, Nutrition, Chemistry and Analytics.

We are in a continuous searching of new sources of ingredients. Until now, we have identified and transformed several agro-food industrial byproducts into ingredients that have been applied successfully both in feed and food products. In this way, the use of byproducts reduces the negative environmental impact for the food industries while enhancing the profitability of the production process.

Insects are consumed all over the world where there is no influence of cultural barriers. Although in Europe is still not well accepted, the influence of the globalization could change this pattern. Insects could be a feasible source of high quality protein and other compounds that can be applied to improve animal and human nutrition. We have experience in designing biotransformation processes for the extraction of ingredients and their application in several food matrices. We also can provide scientific evidences of safety and health effects by performing preclinical studies in vitro and in vivo.

We can contribute to this topic designing low environmental impact and low cost transformation processes into feed/food ingredients, applying them into stable and innovative food matrices, calculating shelf life and testing safety and nutritional effects of the new products with simplified in vitro and in vivo animal models. As experts to promote and deliver innovative products and processes within Food Industry we can also participate in dissemination activities such as training sessions or workshops.

Within this context, our research team has a wide experience in the following topics: - Insect rearing at both the laboratory and plant pilot scales on artificial

CTAQUA counts with an Experimental Center to conduct fish trials under strictly defined and controlled environmental conditions both in fresh and seawater. The patronage of the Foundation provides an industrial field to complete the pilot trials developed in the Experimental Center and evaluate the impact of research in real production conditions.


CTAQUA foundation was created as a response of the innovation needs of the aquaculture sector. Several aquaculture SMEs involved in the patronage are really concerned about the importance of quality and safety of the seafood that they are producing and if there are differences between fishing and aquaculture origin of the seafood on these aspects; so this characterization of aquaculture products is one of the working lines of CTAQUA. CTAQUA has been involved in a consortium for a proposal of the KBBE 2010 call (KBBE.2011.2.4-01: Safety and quality of Ready-to-eat food). The project (Sea-Safe-Food) is focused on the safety, biopreservation and quality of RTE seafood products (artic brined shrimps, tropical shrimp, sashimi tuna and smoked salmon). CTAQUA role in the project is RTD performer responsible for the sampling and analysis (including microbial evaluation) of shrimps and prawns during their processing and packaging. CTAQUA will develop the sampling protocols, provide technical assistance and on spot follow up of farm trials. CTAQUA counts with a network of fish producer associations (APROMAR, National Business Association of aquaculture Producers, ASEMA, regional association of aquaculture producers) that could guarantee the exploitation of the project results.

The company presents a huge experience for the development of multi-analyte methods for the determination of organic residues (pesticides and veterinary drugs) as well as organic contaminants at trace levels (PCBs, phenols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, etc) in food, environmental and biological matrices using chromatographic techniques coupled to mass spectrometry analyzers. Thus, low resolution mass spectrometry analyzers, such as triple quadrupole and ion traps have been used. Furthermore, in the last years, the company has oriented its studies to reduce the analysis time, increase the number of analytes in multi-compund/multi-class methods, simplify the pre-treatment stage and miniaturize the measurement process in order to increase the capabilities of the laboratory, and to improve characteristic parameters of the methods, such as selectivity and sensitivity, considering all these approaches for their application in real problems. Thus, we are collaborating with several research groups from Almeria and Granada University, participating in different research projects funded by the Spanish and Andalusian Science and Innovation Ministry related to this topic: Project AGL2010-21370, recently obtained and focused on the analysis of organic residues in food and feed samples using chromatographic techniques with HRMS analyzers (Orbitrap, Q-TOF and TOF). Project AGL2007-63569, related with the development of fast, sensitive, selective and with high confirmation capability analytical methodologies for



evaluating the contamination by veterinary drug residues in food. CTQ2009-07686, focused on the determination of mycotoxins in feed and food of animal origin and phycotoxins in bivalvia using UHPLC-MS/MS. AM58/04: Evaluation of the contamination by organotin compounds in fish from the Northeast coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It is important to notice that the company has instrumentation to carry out microbiological and other types of analysis (environmental, food safety and quality). For instance, there are two ultra high performance liquid chromatography equipment coupled to triple quadrupole analyzers; a gas chromatography (GC) coupled to a triple quadrupole and two GC coupled to ion traps among others. Furthermore it is important to notice that one of the main purposes of the company is the collaboration with research group. Therefore we have signed several research projects with research groups belonging to Almeria and Granada University.


Currently, we are collaborating on a new project entitled "Control of regulated substances, contaminants and metabolites in aquiculture products using advanced mass spectrometry techniques" which is based on the development of multi-analyte methods for the simultaneous determination of residues authorized and forbidden, included in the European Union (EU) norms, in aquiculture products. Other compounds with biocide activity are also studying. Although they are not authorized for veterinary use, they are included in the controls carried out by the EU in aquiculture products or in the extractive fishing, such as azo-derivate compounds (malachite green and its metabolite), organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Furthermore, transformation products have been also evaluated in environmental samples (waters) and food (muscle, live and skin). For that purpose, ultra high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) and gas chromatography (GC) coupled to mass spectrometric analyzers (MS) of low and high resolution are being used. Thus, UHPLC is coupled with triple quadrupole (QqQ) and Orbitrap (Exactive) analyzers for the determination of high polarity compounds (including the study of TPs and metabolites). On the other hand, GC is being used in combination with QqQ and quadrupoletime of flight (Q-TOF) to control the compounds of lower polarity. The quantification capability of the QqQ and Orbitrap analyzers is also compared. For the extraction of the compounds, generic sample treatment methods such as QuEChERS or “dilute-and-shoot” are being used. These methods are able to extract a high number of compounds of different physical-chemical properties and they require a low consume of organic solvents and extraction time, increasing sample throughput. Finally it is also important to indicate that in the last few years we had signed a research contract with a private company for the determination of several types of veterinary drug residues in gilthead seabream (Sparus Aurata) and sediments.

We are a user of olive by-products. In 2011, will process more than 225.000 tons of pomace two phases. Generate more than 70.000 tons of biomass devoted to thermal uses and power generation. We produce over 5.000 tons of pomace oil and we also have an oil refining factory plant where we process more than 205.000 tons of olive oil and pomace olive oil. We have a fat lab, biologists and chemical engineers. Counting on a total of 50 workers.


We participated in two research projects funded by the European Commission. Both projects have studied the recovery of various by-products of olive trees. The proyects were BIOLIVE between the years 2001-2005 and EN-X-OLIVE, started in 2009 and ending in late 2011.

The partner expertise is closely related to microalgal carotenoids and fatty




acids enrichment. He is aimed at looking for renewable raw materials (microalgae) that can be used as benefit to health dietary sources and/or for feasible biofuel production. Partner research facilities include algal room, lab reactors, outdoor algal cultivation systems and a strategic geographic location that meets high sunlight irradiance and moderate average temperatures, suitable for algal cultivation. The partner´s expertise is also related to isolation, identification and market value of extreme habitat microalgae, in particular from low very pH environments.

IFAPA is a research Institute belonging to the regional goverment of Andalusia (Junta de Andalucía) and it is in charge of the research, technology transfer and training in the agriculture and aquaculture regional sectors. The activities of the Institute are structured into seven main areas, one of which covers all actions related to the study of local fisheries and aquaculture. The area named "marine aquaculture and fisheries resources" has the main objective of generating the knowledge to achieve a more efficient, diversified and sustainable aquaculture of local species. The work is based in the setting up of new technologies for marine fish and bivalves husbandry, feeding and nutrition of new species of aquaculture interest, the development of molecular tools to help preventing disease and increase animal welfare and juvenile quality, and the discovery of new functional compounds from marine microalgae. Achieving such a type of compounds is currently focusing in the determination of iodine compounds which are present in marine microalgae and are delivered through the food chain where they play an important physiological role. Regarding the topic of interest mentioned above, the identification, quantification and mechanism of production of iodine compounds such as thyroxines in microalgae, are research aspects that should lead to achieve both the applications and challenges described. Iodinated compounds that



can be obtained from cultured marine microalgae are, in general, expected to be novel products with the capacity to be applied in the pharmacy and aquaculture industries. Current projects in process related to to the topic: Iodine requirement and thyroid hormone synthesis in marine microalgae (project RTA2009-00054-00-00 funded by INIA); Sustainable and environmentally friendly aquaculture for the Atlantic Region of Europe (project 2009-1/123 funded by the Atlantic Area Transnational programme)


The research group currently working in relation to the topic of interest has a vast experience in the culture of marine microalgae, both indoor and outdoor, with the main aim of using microalgae as food in aquaculture as well as a source of compounds of industrial interest, such as carotenoids. It dominates most of the techniques followed to control microalgae growing conditions together with their biochemical composition. At the laboratory scale, the group has set up different procedures to assess the physiologycal stage of microalgae that are subject to experimental conditions. These are based in specific protocols that determine the photosynthetic stage, as well as the oxidative stress of experimental microalgae. The group has recently initiated a new project destined to evaluate the mechanism of iodine uptake and transformation in marine microalgae. This is an important process that leads to the incorporation of inorganic dissolved iodine in seawater into the food chain. During this process a wide spectrum of iodinated molecules are produced and they have been considered to have significant industrial applications. The group has already been able to purify thyroid hormone extracts from microalgae and determine its presence.

The research group has wide experience in fermentation and enzymatic processes. Recently the group is dedicated to bioethanol production from residues of the agrofood industry. Previous research subjects of the group were the following: kinetic studies on several fermentation processes; stabilisation of fermentation products using diverse technologies; identification of metabolites in fermentation products (resveratrol, poliphenols, etc.); solid-state fermentation of some food industry by-products.

Konectia is a technology-driven spin-off supported by research groups from the University of Cadiz, which aims to highlight the achievements and scientific know-how from them. Backed by extensive experience in the field of management in R & D of its group of promoters, develops the market power of university patents origin highly profitable and which are not exploited. Consisting in a multidisciplinary group of PhD chemicals engineers and PhD in Chemistry, which is working in biotransformations and bioprocesses using several microorganisms like Escherichia coli which has a great capacity for processing different types of sugars in a large number of products, and also with Thiobacillus ferrooxidans which conducts a process of oxidation of ferrous sulfate. We are developing several biotechnology-based processes which can replace current chemical processes used in European industry. In this sense, Konectia manages the development and deployment in the market for home-university patents that are based on development of bioprocesses. The activities of the group at University are mainly funded by regional and national programs of research, but also have developed different projects funded by EC, Framework Programme included.

The company presents a huge experience for the development of multi-analyte methods for the determination of residues (pesticides and pharmaceuticals) as well as organic contaminants at trace levels (polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phenolic compounds, phtalates, etc.) in food, environmental and biological matrices using chromatographic techniques coupled to mass spectrometry analyzers. Thus, low resolution mass spectrometry analyzers, such as triple quadrupole and ion traps have been used. Furthermore, in the last years, the company has oriented its studies to reduce the analysis time, increase the number of analytes in multi-compund/multi-class methods, simplify the pre-treatment stage and miniaturize the measurement process in order to increase the capabilities of the laboratory, and to improve characteristic parameters of the methods, such as selectivity and sensitivity, considering all these approaches for their application in real problems. Thus, we are collaborating with several research groups from the University of Almeria and the University of Granada, participating in different research projects funded by the Spanish and Andalusian Science and Innovation Ministry related to this topic: 1. Re-utilization of wastewaters: study of the effectiveness of treatments based on various technologies for the removal of organic contaminants. Study of the contamination/degradation of residues and organic contaminants in soils from intensive agriculture.



2. Analysis of pesticide and veterinary residues in food and feed by chromatographic techniques coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry (Orbitrap and Q-TOF). 3. Evaluation of the contamination by organotin compounds in fish from the Northeast coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It is important to notice that the company has instrumentation to carry out microbiological, physicochemical and other types of analysis (environmental, food safety and quality). For instance, there are two UHPLC instruments coupled to triple quadrupole analyzers; a gas chromatography (GC) coupled to a triple quadrupole and three GC coupled to ion traps among others. Furthermore it is important to notice that one of the main purposes of the company is the collaboration with research groups. Therefore we have signed several research projects with research groups belonging to the University of Almeria and the University of Granada, as well as with private companies.


In relation to the expertise related to the topic, it must be highlighted that currently we are working on several projects in collaboration with the University of Almería and the main activities we are carrying out are: -Determination of residues and organic contaminants in agricultural soils. -Development of analytical methodologies for the determination of residues and organic contaminants in wastewater effluents from different treatments. The research developed by the Group “Analytical Chemistry of Contaminants“ of the University of Almeria in the field of analysis of residues and organic contaminants has been carried out since the last 20 years. This research has been mainly focused on the determination for pesticides in different food, environmental and biological commodities. During the last decade, the scope of the research has been extended to other compounds in food but also in the environmental field, including i.e. pharmaceutical residues and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in food from animal origin (honey, egg, milk, meat, liver), feed, water, wastewater effluents (WWs) and soil; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in air, water, WWs and soil; phenolic compounds and phtalates in water, WWs and soil; volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in water and WWs; mycotoxins in beverages, vegetables and food from animal origin; phycotoxins in bivalves; organotin compounds and metabolites in fish. Since 1996, the research team work mainly with chromatographic techniques (gas chromatography (GC) and liquid chromatography (LC)) coupled to different low-resolution mass spectrometry (LRMS) analyzers (single quadrupole, triple quadrupole or ion trap). Since the beginning of 2010, highresolution MS (HRMS) analyzers are also available coupled to ultra-high performance LC (UHPLC) (Orbitrap and quadrupole-time-of-flight, QTOF) and GC (double focusing magnetic sector (DFS) and QTOF) and research has begun on them.



In the last years, the studies in the Group have been focused to the diminising of the analysis time, the increasing in the number of analytes in multi-compund/multi-class methods, the simplification of the pre-treatment stage and miniaturization of the measurement process in order to increase the capabilities of the laboratories, and to improve characteristic parameters of the methods, such as selectivity and sensitivity, considering all these approachs for their application in real problems. Briefly here, a summary of the most relevant R&D projects in which the Group has participated is shown: 1. The Research Group can offer a number of analytical services in relation to the treatment of water and elimination of pollutants. The development of new wastewater treatments must be studied regarding the removal of a number of organic contaminants and residues which are currently detected in the final effluents. In this sense, the Group is currently leading a R&D project clearly related to the topic ("Re-utilization of wastewaters: study of the effectiveness of treatments based on various technologies for the removal of organic contaminants").



The project is focused on the develompent and analysis of wastewater effluents by a variety of treatments and technologies (extensive and intensive treatments). The monitored compounds include pesticides, PAHs, phenolic compounds, phtalates, etc., using the most appropiate methodology for each of them. They consider this knowledge is very valuable according to the topic, for instance, in order to evaluate the efficiency of the developed wastewater treatments. The current analytical instrumentation available in the Group must be also considered; in this sense, recent and advanced instruments, such as Orbitrap, are rarely found in the analytical laboratories. Therefore, the specific instrumentation that can be offered by the Group is a very special characteristic in comparison to other candidates. Furthermore, regarding the reuse of treated wastewater in agronomical systems, the geographical situation of the University of Almería can result interesting to evaluate the application of the effluents obtained by the developed technologies since it is an agricultural area devoted to intensive agricultural production with a high water consumption.
