The Informaon Systems Area was set up to respond to the importance of,

and need for, research in computer applicaons in management of government, private and public enterprises, and other forms of organizaons. Starng in the

1970s in an environment that was largely unaware of the potenal benets

of computerizaon, IS Area has worked at idenfying potenal applicaons,

implemenng these applicaons in public and private sectors, and designing

and oering courses related to its area of work.

The thrust of the Area is to stay at the cung edge of management compung

and facilitate development of decision-making capabilies for socio-economic

development. Research in decision support systems, expert systems, computer aided

instrucon, management informaon systems, algorithm design, developmental

informacs, soware export, etc. has been an important tool in achieving this

objecve. Recent research has been in e-Governance, mobile ad-hoc networks, ICT

for development, decision support systems, public administraon, design of networkconguraons and informaon integraon. Some recent research projects are:

` Knowledge management in soware and other industries

` Design and analysis of algorithms for project management

` Modeling of supply chain management problems

` Designing and managing enterprise wide digital infrastructure

` Community radio for rural mobile ad-hoc networks

` Object oriented frameworks for parallelized nonlinear opmizaon

` Frameworks for evaluaon of e-Government Projects

    ` Business intelligence

    ` Open innovaon

As the interests of the faculty are very broad, research topics chosen by doctoralstudents also tend to have wide variety. Based on the topic of dissertaon, tools

used in the research may vary and may include user surveys, decision support

systems, and opmizaon techniques such as integer or non-linear programming.

Some topics could need extensive soware development.

A thesis in informaon systems could be conceptual and a researcher could

build on exisng literature or develop case studies. While the dissertaon need

not necessarily use sophiscated technical tools, the topic should be necessarily

concerned with informaon systems. It is essenal that a doctoral student should

have a good insight into and appreciaon for the role of informaon technology in

management and skills for model building and analysis to understand the impact of

    decisions involved in this area.

In the past, doctoral students have worked in areas like: Mul-mode mulple

resource constraints in project scheduling and machine scheduling problems, Study

of Indian telecom startup rms in the context of new rm formaons, Developing

e-Government impact assessment framework, Collaboraon in Internet enabled

supply chains, Developing and opmizing the distribuon model for electronic

supply chain management systems in the Indian context, Alliances and partnerships

in electronic businesses, Studying the behaviour of buyers and sellers in an

e-commerce context, and Developing a framework for evaluang open innovaon

The Ravi J. Mahai Centre for Educaonal Innovaon (RJMCEI) was formally set upin 1991, aer a group of faculty members had worked for three years on educaonal

training and research, and instuon building in educaon. From an inial focus

on instuon building and higher educaon, the mandate of the RJMCEI has

gradually expanded to include primary educaon, literacy and secondary educaon.

The common thread running through the Centres various acvies is a focus on

innovaons and innovave approaches to countering problems in educaon. The

RJMCEI is involved in applied and policy research in educaon that is relevant to public

educaon systems. Research undertaken at the RJMCEI has included innovave

responses to the issues of basic educaon and literacy, and to management issues in

higher educaon, including management and technical educaon. Members of the

RJMCEI also provide consulng services to naonal and internaonal organizaons.

Major on-going and recently completed projects include:

` Mainstreaming the Knowledge of Innovave Praconers: Research into thepracces of outstanding elementary teachers working in state-run systems.

` The antecedents and consequences of teacher-driven innovaons in publicschooling systems.

` Case studies of Innovave schools (ongoing): Nilobray Vidyalaya, RalegaonSiddhi (a school which takes in failed and ansocial students), Parikrama School,Bangalore (English medium school for slum children), and other schools.

` Project Based method of teaching and learning: Its relaonship to cognive-movaonal aspects of students learning and to teachers job sasfacon, self-esteem and creavity.

` Leadership training in the engineering and industrial training sectors.

` Same Language Subtling: This project built on the principle of reinforcingthe learning of newly-literate people through sub-tling of songs in the samelanguage. Same Language Subtling (SLS) on TV for Naonal Literacy won theBest Social Innovaon for the year 2000 in the Educaon category from TheInstute for Social Invenons, London (U.K.), and was winner at DevelopmentMarketplace, World Banks Global Innovaon Compeon, January 9-10, 2002.

` Instuon Building at IIMA: a three-volume series (starng in 1993 and ending in2011) which is a collecon of reecons of various stakeholders.

` Innovaons in Rural Higher Educaon.

In addion, the RJMCEI has prepared a number of case studies on Indian, Asian

and African management educaon instutes, and on higher technical educaon

in Germany. Members of the RJMCEI have parcipated in assessments of primary

educaon programmes like the District Primary Educaon Programme/ SarvaShiksha Abhiyan, and systems like the Navodaya Vidyalayas and Nehru Yuvak

    Kendras.

The doctoral programme with specializaon in Innovaon and Management inEducaonaims at developing robust research scholars and teachers who can take upleadership roles in educaonal organizaons and systems. The focus on innovaon

and management will develop in the graduates a unique academic capability that

combines a management perspecve with the broader theme of innovaon. This

ts in with the emerging demand for people with fresh perspecves on educaonal

change from a wide range of emerging academic instuons, organizaons that

provide services and ancillary support to the regular educaonal structures, well-

established naonal and internaonal educaonal planning organizaons and

academic instuons, and various research bodies and social think tanks.

The requirements for admission to the doctoral programme in Innovaon

and Management in Educaon are menoned in the secon on Admission

technology, faculty /sta residences have been alsoprovided network connecvity to the Instutes LAN.

The Instute has put a wireless layer (Wi-Fi) on top of

this highly dense network with high level of security using

username password based authencaon. More than 300

Access Points have been installed throughout the Campus

for a superior Wi-Fi experience. A Next Generaon

Firewall has recently been installed to enhance the

network security A storage server with VPN based access

and username password based authencaon is also in

place for accessing data from outside the campus. This

facility is currently available for the Faculty of IIMA.

The campus network is supported by a large server

farm with more than 70 high speed servers, running on

a wide variety of plaorms. About 40 servers have been

virtualized using KVM. Many servers on this network

make use of Linux and open source soware for providing

the necessary services. For every workgroup (faculty,

parcipants, sta, etc.), there is a set of dedicated servers

which provide a core layer of services like Internet access,

and le/print services. The E-mail facility is managed

through Google which provides us web based email client,

    processors, stascal, math programming, simulaon,

    project management, CASE tools, etc.

Every parcipant and faculty member has a networked,

business-performance personal computer or laptop. The

Instutes network is linked to the Internet via a set of

three leased lines enabling round-the-clock Internet

connecvity on the campus. All the Internet Service

Providers (ISPs) from whom the Instute has procured

Internet bandwidth have installed ber opcs link from

the campus to their hub. This ensures very high quality

of bandwidth to the Internet. The Instute has a 70

Mbps bandwidth from TCL, a 16 Mbps bandwidth from

BSNL, and up to a 1 Gbps link from Naonal Knowledge

    Network (NKN).

Every classroom is equipped with a projector, a PC, and
