Bai R.F.D. Panday Girls’ High School is located in Murzban Colony at

Gilder Lane. The foundation of this school was laid in 1898 by Sir Dinshaw Petit and Lady Sakarbai Petit in the loving memory of their daughter Bai Ruttonbai Framji Panday who passed away when she was 31 years old.

This school has a rich history with stalwarts like Late Dr. Homi Bhabha and Late Jamshed Bhabha visited it several times and gave their expertise in the progress and welfare of the school. Very few know that they were the grandsons of Ruttonbai

Panday expressed great interest in the school. This school only enrolled Parsi and Irani students till 1975. Post then they opened their wings, and made it a cosmopolitan school.

The school is run by an eminent body of able Trustees and Committee Members of the Garib Zarathosti on a Rehethan Fund and in the able hands of the Principal, Mrs. Freny Gev Jabulee.

Mrs. Jabulee has been the Principal of this school since June 2001. She was a topper in M.A. from Mumbai University, and has also completed her B.Ed. We got in a conversation with her to know more about the school and the changing trends in the education world. P.T.: Have the student’s mindset changed with promotion being made compulsory till the Std. VIII?

Mrs. Jabulee: Yes, most of the students have become lazy and indifferent towards studies, but the Summative and Formative Evaluation System has been quite effective. P.T.: Does the school use the Internet to teach students in this digital age?Mrs. Jabulee: Yes, our school has a Special Computer-cum-Audio Visual Lab, where children from Std. I to Std. X are given Computer Literacy Education. Computer Aided Learning is practiced in all the classes. All the teachers are computer trained and teach through PowerPoint Presentation and Internet. P.T.: What part does the school play in the all-round development of a child?Mrs. Jabulee: The school believes in all round physical, mental and emotional development of the child

like Karate, Yoga, School Counseling and subjects like Needle Craft, Cookery, Girl Guide, Bulbul Flock, Indian Dance, Western Dance and Western Music. All activities are carried out at no extra cost to the students.P.T.: Do you still have Parsi children studying in school? Mrs. Jabulee: Yes, we have 20 Zoroastrian children studying

in Panday Girls’ High School. Our present Management also looks after the needy children of all Communities especially Parsis, by helping with school fees, uniforms, books and excursions. Afternoon meals are provided to all Parsi children totally free of cost.P.T.: It is very important for the Parsi kids of today to learn about their culture. Does the school conduct any such Zoroastrian studies?Mrs. Jabulee: Yes, our school conducts Zoroastrian Studies in two sessions, every Thursday before school hours. We are also planning to introduce the study of Zoroastrian culture from next academic year.

At the end of the conversation, Mrs. Jabulee said, “The school believes in giving incentives to students to do better. We also believe in

overall development of kids, and hence, we conduct sessions on ‘Family Life Education and Life Skills’, give our students study tips and talks on peer pressure and other emotional and behavioural skills and

of the children. Lastly, I would like to tell my students to strive hard and do your best in life!

School principals lead to make students better in their presence, and making sure that the impacts on the students last even in their absence. P.T. Writer Khushnum Mistry Mrs. Freny Gev Jabulee of Bai R.F.D. Pandey Girl’s High School.

Our Bel-Air Hospital in Panchgani has been awarded the Times of

India Healthcare Achievers Award 2014 in the category of “Innovation in managing long term condition”. Healthcare Achievers Awards 2014 is an initiative by The Times of India and New India Assurance Co. to celebrate achievements and recognize those healthcare providers who have raised the bar in healthcare with their dynamic spirit and innovative outlook. These awards are aimed to be the most prestigious and credible Healthcare Awards in India.

Mrs. Homai N. Modi - Hon. Secretary Maharashtra State Branch and Bel-Air Hospital, along with Fr. Tomy Kariyilakulam - of the Missionary Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament (MCBS) and Director Bel-Air Hospital, received the National Award from Hon’ble Shri Ram Vilas Paswan - Union Cabinet Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution at a function held in Hotel SHANGRI-LA’S EROS, New Delhi, on 11th December 2014. Present at the function were also Health Secretary Shri Lov Verma while Actor Bipasha Basu as the goodwill ambassador for good health, emphasized the need for spiritual healing.

The selection entailed short listing by the organizers, after which a presentation had to be made before a Jury in Mumbai

A survey of the Hospital was also done by Times of India. We were thereafter only informed to be present at the Award Ceremony on 11th November.

Bel-Air has been selected to receive the National Award

from a list of 150 hospitals across India which were shortlisted for excellence in innovation. The other 24 hospitals which received awards were top corporate hospitals like Apollo Hospitals - Kolkata and Chennai, Fortis Hospital, - Delhi, Hinduja Hospital - Mumbai, Ruby Hall Clinic - Pune, St. Johns - Bangalore, Escorts Hospital - Delhi, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, (AIIMS) - Delhi, NIMHANS Hospital- Bangalore, etc. These hospitals received awards in various categories for being the best in eight metropolitan cities in India. “We are very happy that our hospital, situated in a rural part of India and working in very resource limited settings, could achieve the top honors under the same parameters set for corporate hospitals in metropolitan cities. Our focus on patients’ comfort and emotional and physical

“national” recognition.”

Established in 1912, Bel-Air Hospital at one time was the most famous TB Sanatorium in India. From 1964 management of the hospital was transferred by the Founder Dr. Rustom Billimoria and the then Trustees to Indian Red Cross Society, Maharashtra State Branch. Unfortunately the hospital declined and was on the verge of a closure, when in 1994 the Missionary Congregation of Blessed Sacrament (MCBS) took up the administration of the hospital under Fr. Tomy Kariyilakulam who along with Red Cross embarked upon a project of revamping and modernizing the hospital. Bel-Air has now come full circle by being awarded the Times of India Healthcare Achievers Award 2014.

And The Award Goes To… Bel-Air

P.T.: What initiated the beginning of Bawatips?Victor: We’re funny people, we love our food & we have a funny sounding language as well. So I immediately contacted my friend Hormuz Bana, totally

psyched about this new idea & got him on it as well. We both started coming up with

P.T.: How do you think Bawatips has changed the life of the Bawas?Hormuz: Bawatips has

sphere a better place. Adding a pinch of humour

changes the whole scene.

I feel people are way happier after we started the page since we stayed away from Bawa politics and concentrated more on what we’re good at, i.e. Bawa audagiri.

P.T.: What inspires you to write these Bawatips?Victor: Bawas in general, we’re a funny bunch you see. I feel every Parsi is a character that you can cast in a comedy show. Even the language that we speak,

the Bawa gujju has so many p u n s to play a r o u n d with. It’s been quite simple to write tips actually.

P.T.: What kind of response have you got from the Parsi Community regarding Bawatips?Hormuz: time we’ve got a positive response from our fellow Bawajis, once in a while we might have a offended a few old school Bawas. But hey ... we can’t make everyone happy at all

Christmas, especially a festival of Christians is nowadays not only celebrated in Christian houses and churches, but majority of the

households do enjoy the occasion with great fervor and gaiety across the country. For the past twenty years, Parsis at Nowroze Baug have been celebrating Christmas. This year, NNWWL organized its Annual Christmas party on Saturday, December 20 at the Nowroze Baug Playground.

There was lot of fun and excitement-games, food, drinks, dance and music. Almost 100 residents of all age group from the age of 8 to 80 joined in for the evening and enjoyed at the event. They

t a t t o o making, hair b r a i d i n g . Moonwalker for small kids, gifts, chocolates and much m o r e excitement.

The kids were so excited for the event that they came forward to decorate the Christmas Tree with the decorator and also took over the

job of hanging balloons. Even the host Jai from Rhythm of Joy played several games using props like tongs, bucket, balls, marbles and also had quizzes and tongue twister round to keep the kids engaged for an hour or two. Children and elderly participated with great enthusiasm and even won goodies and prizes.

Here they also called Santa Claus, who came singing and dancing to the Christmas carols, and distributed sweets, chocolates and goodies to the children and got pictures clicked with them. All

for the past several years has only been possible due to the joint efforts of the Committee Members and members of NNWWL.

After the very successful organising and encouraging response

Sheri Nu Jaman on 19th of October 2014, Ahmedabad Parsi Panchayat organised the second such event on 13th December 2014. Over 350 humdins right from the tiny tots to the senior citizens, all had a sumptuous dinner consisting of Sev, Sariyo Papad, Masala Khichdi and Saas with Boiled Egg. The catering was done by Malcolm P. Bastawala, associated with Mek Caterers of Udvada. A token fee of Rs. 5/- was collected to arrive at an approximate count of guests. The total sum of which was donated to the Kathi fund of the APP. The APP again helped in the hosting of the Jaman at the Anklesaria Hall, Khamasa. PYLA (Parsi Youth League of Ahmedabad) Community members and volunteers gave

a helping hand in the serving of the food.

L o o k i n g at the more than positive response one

say that the humdins are not only appreciating this initiative but are also coming forward in large numbers as there are many who have shown interest in being donors for the future Jamans to be held in the coming months. The best part of these Jamans has been the anonymous nature of these donors and everyone has really appreciated this kind gesture of these not only deep pocketed but also large hearted and benevolent

Parsis.With the kind of response

events it would not be wrong if the humdins slowly ask for a monthly Jaman to be held on a regular basis. A deep sense of togetherness and the opportunity of meeting fellow humdins across all ages over

the primary reason for the more than enthusiastic and energetic response received by the humdins of Ahmedabad. Seems like the Sheri Nu Jaman has almost certainly been

regular events to be held for the Parsis of Ahmedabad.

Yummy for your Tummy! 09SATURDAY, DECEMBER 27, 2014

2014 has been a great year for food. Old restaurants have revamped themselves, new restaurants have cropped up and we have enjoyed ourselves immensely. This

The Nutcracker - This is the cutest addition to all the new restaurants and cafes this year. It’s tiny but makes for a great place to hang out for a quick cup of coffee or snack. Their focus is on breakfasts and they have some great Eedoo items but the rest of the menu is vegetarian. While most get put off, trust me this is one time you won’t miss the meat. Don’t miss their 7 layered cookie and delicious lemon tart!Sugar Over Dose - From being a home based bakery to launching two full blown stores (one at Kemp’s Corner and one at Lokhandwala) Sugar Over Dose is one of the best sweet treat stores I have come across this year. They make it a point to go beyond the conventional desserts and come up with some very funky stuff. Nutella and chocolate seem to rule the roost so chocoholics will love this place but personally, I’m in love with their Red Velvet Cupcakes. It’s such an over rated dessert and I’m bored because most places don’t know how to make it, but this one is just special. The Sahib Room -dine aspect fool you. This is a great addition to the culinary scene. The Palladium Hotel in Lower Parel launched The Sahib Room this year and it has become a favourite for many. The black dal, various kebabs and tikkas and even their desserts are exceedingly popular and if you enjoy North Indian food, this is a must try.Cafe Nemo - There aren’t many places in Worli but just off the sea link, Cafe Nemo has been attracting hoards of people since it opened this year. The menu is a mix of cuisines and dishes and the ambience is relaxed and laid back. It’s a fun place to grab a meal but come in the morning for breakfast or lunch and the place looks even prettier. I have many favourites from this menu but the must try would be the mushroom gyoza, Seoul Bowl (any combo), the bacon pizza and the tenderloin tartare. Keep an eye out for their Comedy and band nights as well. Colaba Social - This might be the best new opening this year. Colaba Social is a small

space so it tends to get crowded specially at night when it becomes everyone’s favourite drinking spot. I wouldn’t classify this as a restaurant, it’s more of a cafe with its fun vibe and casual approach to food but it’s worth a visit. It’s also where most of my work meetings happen and it’s a great place to hang out. The Mexican lamb poutine, Sid’s big breakfast and Kiran’s breakfast are my favourites (the breakfast is as good as a meal becomes it comes fully loaded) and even though the banoffee cronut (hybrid desert which is a cross between a donut and croissant) is really sweet, it’s tasty.Joss - This is one restaurant that opened this year and I haven’t had the chance to visit yet. Back in the day, Joss was the talk of the town with its brilliant khow suey and dimsums. It’s now opened in Santa Cruz and it’s more evolved and better than before. Everyone who’s been has been raving and promises that it’s a treat for foodies.Terttulia - Shivaji Park got a new boost of energy the minute this restaurant opened its doors. Terttulia is one of Pune’s best restaurants and has become a hit in Mumbai as well. This is a perfect date-night place or even if your want to drab a drink with a friend at the bar. It’s not really kid friendly at night but in the day it’s perfect for big brunches. The cocktails are fun but the treats are their bacon wrapped dates, signature pizza, the karari roti (without a doubt their signature dish) and their lamb and tenderloin mains.Bunmen - This choux pastry loving dessert spot is perfect for a post meal sweet snack. Bunmen is a beautiful concept of choux pastry buns (exactly like

hazelnut, red velvet cream cheese, pista, etc. It’s given

favourite is the crazy caramel and the red velvet bun.

Dear Mamaiji, You always make me read the Gujarati calendar date from the front page of the Parsi Times. Today is Mohor Roj. What does that mean?Dear Dikri,Today is Mohor Roj in the Shahenshahi calender. Mohor is the Yazata presiding over the Moon. The prayer called Mah Bokhtar Niyaesh is dedicated to Mohor Yazata. This prayer is believed to bring peace of mind to those who do it regularly. Since the moon does have an effect on many people, this is understandable. As a part of Creation, the Moon too serves its purpose in the Universe. It provides light in the darkness -even if it is reflected light - it provides a cooling and soothing atmosphere. Ask Mohor Yazata to help you achieve peace of mind, and help you reflect on your own nature. When we get more of self awareness, we are on the way to understand and live our lives with more courage, faith, joy and wisdom. Like the moon, catch the Light and reflect it back to others. Provide for yourself and others a peaceful, calm, serene atmosphere to live in. And you will have the stars twinkling all around you.
